Wal-Mart unfairly targeted by the media!
« on: October 23, 2003, 01:25:40 PM »
Here's a good example of the media hyping up a story.  They're dragging Wal-Mart, the nation's leading retailer, through the mud, even though Wal-Mart wasn't the employer involved in the sting.  Notice how the name of the contractor isn't even mentioned?  If I was Wal-Mart, I'd demand an apology from the news media.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031023/ap_on_re_us/wal_mart_arrests_6

I bet ya if you asked a co-worker or buddy about this, they'd say "yeah, Wal-Mart, they got busted for hiring a bunch of illegals, right?" simply because Wal-Mart's name is so prominent throughout the story.

Shame on you, "first amendment freedom of speech" media!

I still find it funny that anti union guys blame the likes of walmart for the downfall of their small business. Sorry for the hijack, carry on.

I have questions about the contractor, but Wally-world doesn't get off scott free either.  If this contractor does more than one store; that is, they are hired by Wal-Mart Corporate, then Wal-Mart is either stupid(which we know is not the case) or culpable.

Actually, no.

Wal-Mart hires the contractor.  The contractor hires the workers.  If the workers are illegals, then the responsibility is with the contractor.  Wal-Mart has no relationship with the workers and does not control the workers.  Wal-Mart didn't hire the works and doesn't pay the workers and has no control over them.  The contract is with the cleaning company.  The cleaning company is responsible for running their cleaning business, not Wal-Mart.

I don't tell my roofer how to run his business, I just hired him to install a roof.  I didn't go around collecting tax records and green cards for every guy hauling shingles up the ladder.

The cleaning company will get hit by the gov't, not Wal-Mart.

But the media would lead you to believe that Wal-Mart did the deed.

You better check his insurance, and, in this area, make sure that he is not hiring illegals.

If you enter a refinery, as an example, as a third party contractor, you will be required(your company) to show that you are a legal worker.  This is not un-common and is not done for fun.  It is the Law.

walmart is responsible for what the subconractor does. its that way so you cant do an end around labor laws via subcontractors. lets say you build a house, you hire a general contractor to build it for you. he hires subcontractors to do work, (drywall, framers, roofers, plumbers, etc). and one of those guys dont get paid the homeowner is ultimately responsible. it sucks but thats the way it is.

I lived in a small town where Wal-Mart moved in. It was creepy. They actually had a Wal-Mart reprersentative (whome we all called the Harbinger of doom) who came in to a town hall meeting and basically said "Resistance is futile!"

Now when you go to Ridgecrest, Ca. on a Sunday, you'll notice that 2/3's of the cirt population is crammed into the Wal-Mart, either shopping there or working there.

Nothing about unions, it just reminded me of that time.

I work for contractors exclusively.
the contractors check your info and the customer goes over it again.  they review the lists see who you are bringing onto their property, check your licensing, your I-9's, date of your last u/a, are all your saftey certs up to dat, welding papers curent.

you are liable for what happens on your property and if your worth a damn as a bussiness men you check,  you are responsable to provide a safe work place, you are responsable to make sure no illegal bussiness practices are happening on your property, you're taking the liability you better know whats going on.

I'm deffinately not a fan of walmart but you won't convince me that they are sloppy bussiness men.  they know how to take care of their bussiness, and if this was going on at several stores they either knew, or should have known.

From the AP newswire:

"Several law enforcement sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said the investigation grew out of earlier probes of Wal-Mart cleaning crew contractors in 1998 and 2001. Based on recordings of meetings and conversations among Wal-Mart executives, managers and contractors, the law enforcement officials said "various immigration violations had continued to occur with direct knowledge by the Wal-Mart corporation."

I have a Wal-Mart supercenter going in about 3 miles from my house.  I have no intention of going there unless absolutely necessary.  There is another one trying to get permits on the far north end of Columbus and the nearby residents are fighting it.  They might win that battle because it is under township jurisdiction and not the city.

It's denero and it's business..

Bad Bad Wall-mart!

Wall-mart will pay a fine which is a lot cheaper than paying those 300 illegals a full American wage for 4 years.

This is how Republicans do business...nothing new, US laws are for the liberals.

Just another example of the Liberal press making something out of nothing, and not knowing how the "real" game is played.
