My monitor crapped out tonight... any ideas on a new model?
« on: October 23, 2003, 09:53:52 PM »
Hey all, with a flash of white light, sizzling sound, and a puff of acrid smoke, my monitor died this evening.  Quite a freaky, and somewhat scary sight, as I thought the damn thing was gonna burst into flames.  Anyways, I need a new monitor, and I prefer the minimum of a 19" screen.  Any suggestions from you out there on newer models?  Howw about the flat screens out there, They worth it?

Any help is appreciated.

:aok

Dont get a flat screen if you want the best image and want a good monitor for games or movies.

I like my NEC multiSync FE991 a lot

I would not go with a flatscreen myself.

Stay away from LCD flat screens and do NOT buy anything from Sams Club.

You guys are saying don't get a flat screen. Do you mean flat panel (lcd)? Flat screen CRT monitors have the best picture of all imo.

You are right, CRT flat screens have the best picture. I meant say stay away from LCD's and Plasma screens....which now seem to be refered to as "flat screens"

How much you wanting to spend?

I got an Envision 19" flat screen CRT at Comp USA about 3 months ago and am happy. It was on sale and quite a bit less than others. I looked at the entire line of monitoprs and did see some that had a better picture but not for the money they wanted for the little improvement AFAIC.

Check Best buy and Comp USA if they are in your area. I'd also loo in Costco and Sams Club for the same units. So far even "bargain" CRT's have given me good service for several years. Especially if they are "name" brands on close out.

Twist I have to disagree.

Its been 5 years since I bought the first monitor from sam's club, we are currently on #5. absolutely not a speck of trouble with any of them. They are all still in use.
3 of them are 5 years old & going strong.

Mostly CTX although my last is a samtron.

On the other hand, I bought 2 monitors from an expensive computer place.

Both fried within 3 years.

Get a flat screen... They dont cost that much anyway nowadays.

Flat screen is the way to go...

I have a 19 " CTX monitor. The flat one, not the thin one. Very very good monitor ;)
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Well at home I have the 21" (19" something viewable) Samsung dfi 955 flat picture tube and love it.  I got it 2 years ago from best buy. I really wanted a Sony to replace my old one but I saw the picture quality of this compaired to the Sony and hands down had it beat.

I have a 19" LCD and its great. Will never get a CRT again unless you are a serious Image/video editor guy. CRT's have better colour rendering.

If you find that new LCD's are not for gaming then i would guess that you spend waaay to much time playing games :D

Just had a new monitor delivered today.  I chose:-

Iiyama Vision Master Pro 454 19" CRT

Completely flat screen, and the base has built in speakers (won't use them), built in 4 x USB hub, Mic connector.

The impressive thing is the refresh rate!

2048 x 1536 @ 80 hz
1800 x 1440 @ 85 hz
1600 x 1200 @ 100 hz
1280 x 1024 @ 120 hz
1024 x 768 @ 160 hz

I'm now running at 1600 x 1200 @ 100hz!  Very bright screen though, just need to tweak it a little!
