Bought a Marine Lunch today...
« on: October 24, 2003, 12:01:34 PM »
I just wanted to share this with a bunch of folks who can appreciate it. Yes, I'm tooting my own horn, but it felt great to do.

I was in the mall food court today, just rushing though my BS work and I happen to see a Marine in his uniform on line to pay for his lunch.

Although I felt a little weird doing it, this was something I needed to do. As he was reaching into his pocket, I walked up behind him and told the cashier it was on me.

The guy seemed surprised, and made a minor gesture of protest, but I insisted. He then simply said thank you...I replied by shaking his hand and saying "No, Thank you for everything you're doing".

It felt really good to show my appreciated directly to the guys who are out there defending our country. I hope he tells his comrades that there are plenty of Americans that support them.

I had someone do this to me in 1991...I was slated to deploy to Saudi in Feb, 2nd wave of us Guardsmen to maintain our refueling aircraft.  We weren't needed as the air war took vastly less time than planned for.  So I was still on activity duty back here in base for 9 weeks.  I was at Subway, waiting to pay for my sandwich and a middleaged guy walks ahead of me and tells the cashier its on him.  I tried to tell the guy, look, its not like Ive been on the front lines, I'm just a Guardsmen.  He wouldnt hear of it and thanked me for being a part of our military.

sigh...what a proud moment.

So Muck, well done.  You have no idea what it meant for that guy.

Bravo Zulu, Muck!

To toot my own horn I have a chance, a real SLIMMMMMMMMM chance of being on the team that carries the national ensign onto the field at Reliant Park on Nov. 2nd before the Texan game.  Here's to good luck!

US Central Command is my neighbor.  We get a mish-mash of Air Force, Army, and Navy types around constantly.  Shortly after 9/11 I was in a Subway Sandwich place finishing up my lunch when I passed a military guy waiting in line.  I noticed he had his wallet open to count singles, so as I walked out I handed him a fiver and said "Lunch is on me" and kept going.

very nice gesture muck. A co-worker went and got a buzz-cut yesterday in memory of the 200+ marines killed 20 years ago yesterday. He was in his first year in when it happened.

From a vetran (currently active duty, AGAIN) I can say that even the smallest of gestures of a simple thanks go a LONG way.  I got married in vegas in my dress blues.  After words we left the chaple and hit the casinos.  I didnt pay for ONE thing all night.  In fact i remember looking down and having 5 double jack n cokes in front of me.  Wife was pissed cause i got smashed on our wedding night but hey, thats her problem.  Point being.....it matters to us...it really does.
