Saburo Sakai took off for his final sortie...
« on: September 24, 2000, 08:59:00 AM »
Repost from AGW post by Spades. ( http://agw.dogfighter.com/agw//Forum3/HTML/014842.html  )

He dedicated his biography to...

"all those fighter pilots with whom I fought, and fought against, who will never come home."

This great airman and unique character will now join his comrades and former foe in eternal peace.

Is it true? No source in this post, I looked for that information in news channels, but nothing. But if it true...

Great pilot, great person.

I am not in MA, but if information is really true I suggest the last honer flight for him. Can someone who is in MA currently organize it?

Thanks,

Fariz.

 Looking for a great read?
Sakai(and I think Martin Caidin), authored one of my fave WW2 books entitled 'Samurai'.
Really great look into the heart and mind of a great man and pilot.Gives a real good 'feel'of early war Pacific theatre.
I believe it was a Bantam book.

     Enjoy,

S!

This is really sad.  Everybody in our hobby should read his book.  He was unique.

Already posted it in O'clib but:...

Fair skies and tailwinds to a truly honorable warrior. His kind is in very short supply.

Samurai is one of my favorite books...

Through Sakai's perspective, I learned that underneath the different ideologies that war is fought over, and the hate that goes with it, we're all pretty much the same.

Thanks.

This is truely sad news.  I read his book long ago and have re-read it many times.

Someone I always wanted to shake hands with.

A true warrior!!

Rock:  Ya see that Ensign, lighting the cigarette?
Powell: Yes Rock.
Rock: Well that's where I got it, he's my son.
Powell: Really Rock, well I'd like to meet him.
Rock:  No ya wouldn't.

I couldn't believe this thing till today.

however, most of newspaper web sites reported Saburo Sakai passed away.

ah...unfortunately, it was true.

we will plan missing man formation with A6M5b for Sakai this week.

Salute.
