Mission Planner.. MA Fun or PIA?
« on: October 31, 2000, 10:47:00 AM »
First my apologies.. I've been off the game a bit the last week and a half.. had to deal with 2 funerals; an ex-wife in the hospital; a daughter in rehab and a birthday. A really crummy week.

On to the subject... I've been experimenting with the mission planner; and have put up 5 missions to date for the bishes in the MA as the mood and strategic situation dictated, and was stunned to have them all come off remarkably well. All accomplised the objectives, with minimum losses.

What startled me most was the amount of participation.. seemed to 'strike a cord' so to speak; and the missions all helped to reverse a defensive trend in Bishlandia, and we recovered our lost fields and had some fun.

Is this what is lacking in the MA?? Do we need more of these missions to end the neverending stalemate/attrition of MA dweebishness?

On using the mission planner I discovered a few things that could be changed that would make it a hell of a lot easier to get a mission on the planner quickly.. as it is now; it takes about 15 min to do one up, and another 10-15 min of lead time is required to staff it. That means the mission author needs to be looking at the strat as it WILL BE 30 min from the time he starts writing the mission. obviously; this snail pace of mission generation tends to cut down a hell of a lot on my flying time.. I spent more time writing the missions in the planner than I did flying.

So; here goes some observations and suggetions on the mission planner/editor....

1. Having access to the planner/editor while in FLIGHT (rtb'ing from last mission; setting up next) would make it easy to make more appropriate missions!

2. Stored/saved mission profiles create huge problems in timing... takes a fair amount of time to reopen each flight; reset it's times for start/launch, resave them and then resend the mission to the server. Every time I reworked a saved mission profile it failed to launch the pilots.. It simply put em in the tower, no plane. Wound up having to re-write fresh every mission... loses time; pilots lose intrest while wating. Issit bugged?

3. Waypoints.. no visual feed back during intial point placement. mission has to be 'saved'; reloaded, then reopened in edit mode to verify waypoints. This futzed me up for hours while learning to use the planner this week. In addition, can the Top-Down map room view be made to look DIRECTLY down on the map?? The current view offset makes it impossible to place waypoints correctly.

4. Mission start times/flight start times/field start#/field start runway stuff seems to have problems. The prime mission planner has a place to insert the mission start time/pilots may accept by times... then each and every flight has to have a start time; field start location, runway direction. Why not have the info from the master sheet AUTOMATICLY set the start time; field number; direction etc for ALL flights, and if any variance is needed, it CAN be done for that flight off it's own sheet. In other words; put the info for start/accept by times; field start location; RW direction all on the MASTER page; and changing the info here changes all the flights accordingly. BIG timesaver!

Oh.. and thanks Bishes. that was a pure blast the other night!!

I can't help on the details but I would like to coment on "Is this what is lacking in the MA?? Do we need more of these missions to end the neverending stalemate/attrition of MA dweebishness?"

The answer is YES !!!!   More people  need to try this thing out and use it.  In the MA there are folks who want do do thier own thing and there are people who want to fly for a "purpose."  I do either as the mood strikes. But when I would see Zigrat announce a mission. I'd auger to participate.
I've said it before, the tool is there but not many are picking it up to build what they complain is so lacking in AH - teamplay and mission oriented gameplay.
I'm glad to see another community notable take the bull by the horns!  <S> to you Hangtime for actually DOING something to make your gameplay (and others by association) the way you want it to be.

LOL!! Thanks Westy. Frankly; I was hugely embarassed by the situation in Med Leauge. I had no clue how to use the MP; and it had suddenly became a 'requirement' for the CO's to use the damn thing..

Now that I've got some of it's oddities mastered; it's a lot less intimidating to use; but still it's seems to be more akward and ungainly than it needs to be. The key to getting folks to using it would seem to be in making it as intutive and user friendly as possible.

Nonetheless; despite it's few shortcommings; the advantages it provides for dispelling the usual MA dweeb fest and the sorry bellybutton supension of disbelief THAT genterates still makes it the right tool for the job. Futzy as the MP is; it's still the most powerful tool we players have to put some fun back into the MA.

I hope.

Dang Hangtime,...a pilot after my own heart.  I would really like to participate in such missions.
As a buff pilot, I find it hard to get together the masses needed for a good raid.  There have been a couple of successful buff missions, which I put together.
But those are rare.
I have dinked around with the MP, but like you, found it to take a lot of time.  The one time I did put up a mission, no one participated, so I have stopped trying.

I am glad your missions have gone well.  I, for one, really do like planned missions.  They take the frustration out of the game by defining goals and timings, which are far more efficient than just group gangbanging and hoping for the best.

If ya see me online, and need a buff pilot for a mission, count on me.

On to the subject...

You don't need to apologize to us for a game. I hope your life takes a turn for the better. Seems you are over due. I believe for every up there's a down and vise-versa. Wishing you and yours the best in the days ahead.

Firstly, I took part in a couple og Hang's missions and I'd like to say cheers! They were a blast.

I think the mission planner will only improve as people start to use it more and provide the folks at HTC with some feeback as to how it can be made to work better, so I'll make one myself.

I'd like to see a couple of extra icon highlights. One for all the people in the same mission as you currently are, and one for all the people in the same flight. When a large mission launches several flights from the same airbase it can get very confusing. If you get time to have a flight leader slected then you can use the .wingman command to highlight them, but it would be very useful to have the whole of your flight shown in some way. Same for the rest of the people in the mission (in a different colour).

Just to wander off track a hilight for people on the same Roger Wilco channel would also be helpful. It's really annoying to be too slow typing '<handle> 6' only to later realise they were on the same voice channel as you =(

Hang, you want to find out how to get those missions up quicker? talk to Zigrat. He usually gets his up and done in about 5 mins, and they are usually quite succesful. I'm not sure how he gets them done so fast, though I suspect it has something to do with being a Knight

Yes Hangtime I concur with Newguy.  When Knights are on a roll Zigrat has these missions up and gives approx 6-10 minutes lead time.

It never started fast, it took time and grew.
It started as "A Wrecking Crew" mission with a few of us riding on thier coat tails.
It became so much fun , other knights started recognising the results ,and the fun of participating .
All that it needs is a catalyst. Zigrat and the Wrecking Crew were ours.

One thing I would like to see is  a score or a tracking  of succesful use of the mission planer.
For instance you punch in the mission parameters and  your side/or participants gets awarded  something "PERK POINTS" possibly for  succesful  completion of the goals.

Hang..

Was a blast following your mission planner, gives flying a bit more purpose when you have a group of people that are following the same plan as you are.

It was far better being on the offensive and the fields where taken in quik order.

Im in anytime you want to plan a mission, between the 2 of us i think we can gather enough people to run any mission.

Nice job Bishops, and tkx Hang

Yep was really good fun Hangtime!  <S>  We should have more of this, though many only accept the mission if it's someone we know or trust.

Cyas up bud!

Thanks Egler.. appreciate the kind words.

This sim IS my sanity check.. my relief from stress. I enjoy the challenge of outhinking the other guy; the other team..... and the MP makes it more like a good chess game and less like a session of Quake.

The rest of yah; thanks to the good info in the Survey thread, I hope to be able to toss up some kewl "Axis assault" missions featuring a LW planeset; "Banzai!" attack mission types for the IJN crowd as well as my usual main-stream good ol USA/Allied Alpha strikes.

Thanks again; all!!

Oh God whats next?  The Bishies are making missions now?    Sounds like fun Hang.  I might have to consider defecting now that my squad leader has left the building...if I can find a good heavy bombing group anywhere in this sim.

Missions rule.

And yes all prospective scenario CO's must know how to use the planner.

Missions are the best. Like Westy, I've augered my plane when I hear Zigrat announce a mission. He does a great job of throwing em together. I think the planner is one of the least used things in the game. Most folks probably don't want to take the time to put one up, or to learn how to use it. And, sadly I've been one of em

Hope your family situation gets better hang. We're thinking about you.

As far as the planner goes, you're on the right track. It intimidated me for a long time too. But now, i waste no time planning bad missions, and getting all my countrymen killed! hehe. Seems everytime I get a mission planned, by the time its ready to launch, the damn field is Capped!
