That is impressive!

I thought he meant the gladiator world in the Mechwarrior universe... I've been reading all the battletech novels again.

Anyone else reminded of Jurassic Park? Rebooting a server and everything is ment to come back on. Instead all hell breaks loose...
Watch out HT you might release something horrible!

Had a UPS die on me late last year. The Windows server gets rebooted and cleaned up weekly because it apparently hasnt learned to wipe its own arse yet, otoh the Suse box had been up since we moved office just over 5yrs ago.
Got to love *nix :aok

Always get worried when the customers I support reboot a Solaris, iSeries or AIX/UNIX server that has been up for along time...

I've always thought Solaris sounded interesting, especially the Dynamic Tracing.

If we put Solaris on our machine can we run AH with it?

we had to kill a cisco router that lived more than 11 years...

What about an IBM BladeCenter?

It came back up like it was a new system. Nevertheless, we will be replacing the hard drive in it soon.
It is a Supermicro server.

Your server room must be clean. I had a linux computer once that was not rebooted for... well I dont know exactly but it was well over a year, probably close to two. Eventually the CPU fan became a whirling chunk of dust, made tractor noises and stopped cooling. The case fan was still bravely chugging along with what looked like a pound of dust on it... :)
Overall, the view inside the case looked like something that was found by Indiana Jones in a Pharaoh's tomb.
It was sitting in a graduate students office, on the floor which was far from clean.

The service and program quality from HTC over the years has always been exceptional

Before I got deeply involved in Oracle I was a UNIX system admin. Our main servers were Sun Solaris. They are the most stable and powerful servers of their type. We too had a server up 2.5 years plus! THAT is the kinda system you want a business to run on!
Oracle, who now owns Solaris, have added a new kernal to their LINUX that allows you to restart any part of the kernal while keeping the OS up. Zero downtime mission statement there!
That HiTech use Solaris for part of their mission critical services shows you guys just how dedicated they are to performance and stability. If you only look at impact fees and not ROI, Windows would have been much cheaper. Very wise move by HiTech to use Solaris. :salute

WTG on the successful upgrade. What sun hardware did you go from/to?

If your using hardware that's more than 5 years old you can reduce our monthly fees.

Awwww hitech! Where did you find this guy!!! Get him up on stage because he is amazingly funny!!!

My $15 a month to AH is quite probably the cheapest entertainment I have considering the amount of hours I log. :uhoh

The fact that they have not raised the subscription fee over the years even with the change in the economy is essentially the same as a "reduced" fee. So, there you go. You got what you wished for, little Timmy. Merry Christmas!

I'd be happy with $20/month to include the new hardware fees and a stiff drink for Skuzzy every Friday night for putting up with everyone

I use to work at a large (the largest) data storage maker. I installed a NIS nameserver in their data center in 2004. It's still up and never been rebooted. I think it was a 220r. 2.6.

Nevermind, it's gone. They went to a linux VM last fall.

The cheapest. I make this case all the time. 40 hours a month (lusche could tell us Average time) for $15.00. that's like $2.67/hour.
You can't watch cable tv for $2.67/hour.

Hey Pand, you know what a dog turd Alice is? Yeah, she's a SuperMicro too.

Then whoever installed it probably did not know what they were doing. Or thought they knew what they were doing.
I have been using Supermicro motherboards since 1995 and have never had a failure. All HTC servers are Supermicro based and all of them have been rock solid.

Woa, Navajo, you better see Rule #4 before you start a nerd war, sir!

It was speculation on my part. After using many, many Supermicro motherboards, since around 1995, I have never had a problem with them. My home file server is based on a Supermicro motherboard that uses a Pentium III. Still runs like a champ.
All of HTC servers are Supermicro based and the only failure we have suffered was due to a power supply (Antec) going bad and taking the motherboard with it. We are very happy with the reliability and stability of those products.
I would not hesitate to recommend those, for servers.
-
I'm just joshing you, the Supermicros installed here (before I came onboard) were a disaster, but it wasn't the motherboard.
The problem I have with one of them running at home is related to the array controller, but the front of the plastic case says Supermicro, so it must be their fault, right?!

Pffft, 50% chance mine (CAD machine at work) will reboot itself when I plug in my phone to charge.
Most impressive though with the game server, maybe a record?
