Title: sqaud names
Post by: stealth on April 11, 2010, 10:17:54 PM
I'm looking to rename my squad to something more interesting. What are some squad names I could use. Historical ones mostly. My squad is still deciding what to name it then we'll vote. I also thought this post would help for the future and other squads looking to rename there squad.

Why are you asking US?

It's YOUR squadron. You have to pick something YOU like, and is important to YOU.

Asking US what YOU should be called is silly, might as well ask what to name your webpage, or what password to put on your e-mail account, etc.

It's personal. You have to pick it. If you don't have any one unit that's personally interesting to you, why force it to be something you have no knowledge or compassion for?

Well you know 90 or more ides from 90 squaddies terms to be difficult. We would have the leaders decide but we have a rule we vote stuff together as a squadron so it's kinda hard. That being said I did this.

What kind of squad are you, fighters, bombers?  What country, U.S, Brits, Candi, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Russia, Romaine, Croatia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Brazil, Mexico, china, Australia, New Zeland, Polish, Greece, Netherlands, Holland, Belgium, Hungary, Thailand, Slovakia, Bulgaria.  That should get you started.

If you notice, most of the long running squads with historical names tend to fly birds that their historical namesakes flew.

Lots, and I mean lots of history based squads have come and gone with the name being used and reused again.  From what I can tell the problem becomes they don't really have the interest in the history.

There are also lots of long time squads with non-historical names that work because their interest is different and they fly all kinds of birds.

As folks have mentioned, it has to be what fits for you

If you got 90 folks, you ask THEM what you should be called. At least they have a vested interest. Use your squad forum.

Or you, as the leader, make a decision.

You don't ask the general public. We, frankly, couldn't care less, and I mean that in the most un-insulting way.

It is YOUR squad, YOU decide, dont vote.  If they dont like the name fragg'em.  You have 90 members, Let'em squeek. By the way it is "Their" not "There",  There implies a place, not a group of people. Dah Duh Dah.  Again in the most uninsulting way  Hadn't thought of that krusty thanks.

Well you know a Pony in the air with at a maximum of 150 B17 heavy bombers with puffy 5 inch guns firing every half second with 30-60 escorts and 2 full dar bars worth of enemy fighters. You kinda need a Pony squad lol.

I would suggest you buy a few books on World War II Mustang operations and read them. There is bound to be a story in those books that catches your imagination and will lead you to choose an historical squadron or group name that actually means something to you.

OK, let me break it down for you, I am the CO for the 2D amenders, or the 2d amendment squadron.  It was started by Utah, he believed in the second amendment of the constitution, which is the right to bear, and hold arms.  He made the rule that we would fly Navy aircraft as the Squad plane, because, he liked the F4U series planes.  It was HIS decision, I joined because HE brought me in.  Now I am the CO.  I decided to keep his ideals, but I took the politics out of the Website.  I fly what I want to, so do MY squadies, unless it is squad night, then we fly Navy planes, unless we need bombers.  The Second Amendment, means something to MY squad, even the Yankees, and the guys from Venezuela, even though they are not Americans.  Pick a name that means something to YOU.  Put it out to your squadies, if they like it good, if they dont, you can hold a discussion, but YOU need to run your squad.  Look at this as a way to develop leadership skills.  Do you think that Pappy Boyington, would say, "Ok guys I think that we should do such and such."  Would Patton say," You in the green, would you please go over and try to defend that little hill over there?".  You are the CO you have to make a decision.  It is none of our buisness what you call your squad.  When Utah left the game, I did not ask the squad if they wanted to change the name, I made the decision, I was keeping the name.  If they wanted to stay with the squad good if they didnt, Adios.  All of them stayed.
Also do you want to fly Army Air Corps planes, do you want to fly Navy, do you want to fly Japanese,German, Russian? Before you ask a question like this you need to think of things like this, and then look up some squadrons, there were plenty out there.  But it all boils down to YOU need to mack a decision.

And Vini Vidi Velco, means "I came, I saw, I stuck around"  If you were refering to me Dawger, if not disreguard.

You missed the point.  Pearl Harbor was more a "lovey Dovey touchey feeley" movie.  There are alot of better movies out there to watch, Tora Tora Tora, War and Remembrance, Patton, The guns of Naveron, Hundreds of great movies dealing with WW11,  That had great patriotic americans in then. Books such as "Ploesti" by James duncan and Carroll Stewart, "Here is your war"  You just need to do some research.

if it is gunna be a pony squad how about airastangs or 6wingslings or something historical but frankly the historic route is sorta... overused and well quite frankly some might see the imitation a compliment but generally I feel it is sorta lame to steal their names. I suggest you come up with your own nicks possibly the one "Clouds on wings" I could go over so many. I personally would love to see a good russian squad that flies all russian stuff all the time in squad ways.

Okay, I'll help.

I think you could, for example, call it, "Painful Rectal Itch". Consider that none but the truly excellent could carry such a name. Further, you could tag a byline like, "you don't want us on your tail".

How about "incurable social disease"? Again, you could develop a creative byline like, "even after the pleasure of the grapple is over, fires still burn", or, "you'll feel it after we visit your base".

See? Get creative. You could call yourself the Amway drones. What could be more unwelcome and challenging than a visit from such as they?

I just don't want you to go away thinking everyone over 40 is unwilling to help.

How about "The Diarrhea Gang, Blasting from Sixes Worldwide since '010"?
"Rectum Rockets? From your six with a bullet" ?

Never let it be said that I didn't charitably reach out.

Yeah, but it's a Mustang squad. If there's one image Mustangs conjure, it's one of the Wild West.

They should call themselves the Arizona Texans. Barring that, I'd say Blue Falcons - they can adopt "BF" for short.

I'm going to keep helping until I roll over and fall asleep.

This is where reading history helps. Go through some WW2 combat material, either online, or in books. For example, I spent quite a while reading up on different bomb groups, deciding on which one my group would emulate. We all love the B17, and there were many groups that flew the old beast. Then I read up on the "Ragged Irregulars". I got hooked reading up on thier combat missions, looking at the old photos. So, I decided to use the name, and see just how many bomber nerds AH posessed.

I'm glad to see it worked. :)

Currently, I'm reading a 1965 publication of Fighter Aces, covering WW1, WW2, and the Korean conflict. When I'm done, I plan on reading more about different bomb groups.

My point is, though, to enjoy AH all that much more by taking a look at the history behind all the air/sea/land vehicles in it. You'll find your nitch. :aok

What you think I like the idea of more sqeekers the kids get to hyper they do everything they please but its annoying,15yr olds doesn't matter they'll still act like annoying kids. I mean believe me I love hanging with kids my age but when some kids get on a game there a little to hyper,to much sugar in there coffee if you know what I mean.

There is a great book called,"Death Squadron" by Grover C. Hall, it is not so much about the flying but about the men and what they did.  A VERY good read.

The original title is "1000 Destroyed".  The name was changed to get folks without a clue to pick up a book based on "Death Squadron!"  I hated that the name got changed.  Look for 1000 Destroyed.  That's the real book

It's about the 4th FG.  Grover Hall was the PR Officer at Debden
