Title: Ninth Tri-Annual Dueling Bracket & Results
Post by: BaldEagl on January 29, 2012, 10:37:53 PM
Sorry for the delay guys.  I got waylayed today and got a late start on this.  I forgot how long it takes to get this thing set up initially.

I had posted an idea in the sign-up thread to lower the number of byes by randomly choosing first round losers to advance but decided against doing it because it's not what everyone signed up for.  After further consideration those types of things need to be decided before sign-ups start.

Don't forget that fuel loadout is now the players option.

We have 44 competitors so 24 fight and 20 have byes.  Here's the final roster.  Make sure to let me know if I got anything wrong:

There seems to be a problem with my placement on the ladder.  You have matched me up with someone who will make me cry after just 1 turn.  Please remedy this IMMEDIATELY !

I have already PMed BE and Sonic23

due to my house flooding from a busted pipe the other day i am having to back out of the Turny. i again apologize to Sonic23 as i know no one likes to move to the next round by forfit. but with my comp having water damage not much i can do.

i also would like to say sorry to BE as this makes the second turny i had to back out of sorry bro.

i am however able to stay on the review committee, if thats ok with you BE?

Congratulations to the first round winners.

I wanted to post that we were in full swing for week two but there were four unfought duels.  None of the contestants in those duels posted prior to the Friday posting deadline so technically, all of them should be decided by random draw, but since I now know that at least two of them are being arranged I'm going to give all four an extension until 6:00 PM Tuesday.

Here's the unfought duels.  I'm going to let the review committee decide the outcomes should they not be fought (random draw or who advances or what some other outcome should be).

Yarbles
P-38G
INK

SF
C.202
shiv

Google
Temp Mk V
wrongway

B4Buster
Spit Mk IX
FBTitan1

As always your next duels are still due by Sunday.

So here's as many of this weeks match-ups as I can do until the above are decided.  I'll post updates as the other results come in.

Good luck in round two gentlemen.

I'm forfeiting my duel to Sonic.  Unfortunately I hate doing this but with a new baby at home I just can't designate a time and only flew 1 sortie in the past 3 weeks so I'm terminating my account for awhile.  Tried to fly 1 night and had stick problems not staying calibrated.  GL to all

Well this is getting to be a bit ridiculous.  Out of eight duels to be contested this week only three can be scheduled because in a weeks time 10 people couldn't squeeze in 20 minutes to get their fights in.

One again I'm going to give extensions to everyone who didn't duel but this is it.  I've allowed extensions in the past to accommodate special circumstances but doing so obviously has given people the latitude to walk all over me and force me into extra work during the week while I'm putting in 12-13 hour days at work.  Next week duel or not the rules will determine who gets into the quarterfinals and I won't wait past 6:00 PM CST hoping that more duels get done.

Here's the people who signed up to abide by the rules but decided they were above them:

Boo
A6M5b
RedBull

Warthog
Bf 109F-4
Yarbles

DrBone
Hurri Mk IIC
Tomcat21

Sukov
P-39Q
Ace8

Melvin1
Mosq Mk VI
SunsFan

Again I'm going to let the review committee determine your fate if the duels don't happen.

And here's the six people who get to duel:

TBF Bald Eagle I have twice posted in this thread within the time period allowed to get in touch with warthog. This worked perfectly well last week with Ink  :old:

As far as I know Warthog has made no effort to contact me  :headscratch:

While I appreciate your frustration I believe I have acted in good faith and attempted to get the duel fought within the alloted time. I think its unfair to say I decided I was above the rules.

I think its fair that If Warthog is not going to show himself then I go though if he does lets have the fight.

Finally thanks for running the event I appreciate your efforts as I am sure do many others.

UPDATE

Here's two more for this week:

RedBull
P-40E
akELFY

Ace8
P-39D
FBTitan1

Three to go.  Tomorrow is the hard deadline.

I realize I blanketed eveyone in the unfought duels with my comments.  I didn't want to have to take the time to sort it all out last night.  I'd guess if you've been making a reasonable effort to get your duels in you'll advance.  If not you won't.

Title: Re: Ninth Tri-Annual Dueling Bracket & Results
Post by: BaldEagl on February 14, 2012, 11:05:14 PM
UPDATE

With 4 of 5 review committee members responding here are the determinations on the unfought duels:

In the case of Warthog vs Yarbles it was a unanimous decision that Yarbles should advance.

In the case of DrBone vs Tomcat21 the prevailing opinion was that both players put in an effort to meet up but just couldn't do it.  One vote for DrBone and three votes for a random draw.  Random draw wins and Tomcat21 advances.

In the case of Melvin1 vs Sunsfan there were two votes split between them and two votes for a random draw, again with the opinion that they had tried to connect but were unable.  Due to more votes for a random draw along with a split opinion random draw wins and Melvin1 advances.

I did not take part in the voting although I made the random draws based on their opinions.  The review committee also had all the PM's that were sent to me to assist in their determinations.  Their decision is final.

So the rest of this weeks matches are as follows:

TC
Typh Mk I
Yarbles

Tomcat21
F4U-1
SF

MickyD
FM2
Melvin1

All duels must be completed by 6:00 PM CST Sunday.  No extensions will be allowed.

Good luck to all in trying to make the quarterfinals.

That probably doesn't require video.  From the rules: A random draw... produced by a random number generator in MS Excel.

I'm not saying my opinion counts for more than yours or anyone else's usualy, but in this instance I have participated in every one of Baldy's brackets and have found the review system effective and fair. Not really worthy of a facepalm. It is quite simple, get the duels done or be at the mercy of the review board.

I am not going to type out a big explanation about how he committee came up with each decision. I will however explain what I have noticed.

The ones that end up in random draw are almost always the ones that don't set up specific times and try to just "meet up" online. If you don't want your duel to be decided this way hen schedule 1 or 2 specific times to meet in game and get them done. This way if one of you does not show then the other wins.

In the case of Drbone, this above should've given Boner, the pass to the next round. Does the "review committee"even look at their own thread? Good luck with the move Tomcat21 ,and Good Luck to rest of contestants! :rock

was just wondering how he does the random thing  sticks,  names in a hat,  coin toss etc.    :)

I use the Xcel random number generator, in this case set to a maximum of 2, with the top player in the bracket being number 1 and the lower person in the bracket being number 2.  If it generates a 0 I run it again until I get a 1 or a 2.

Wait?  So a guy had to meet up to be in a fight... but couldn't make it...  because he can't be online... and so they randomly draw him to move to the next round?

I thought if you can't make a match, you forfeit?  I knew you guys had some weird rules in these events, but now I'm even further from wanting to participate.  It's like ending a World Championship in a shootout?  What the hell besides women's soccer does this?

Discuss.

if you know you have no chance to win the duel it seems to makes sense to muddy the waters like this by not being available, that way you get 50% chance to move to the next round :)

not suggesting TOMCAT is guilty of this, but it highlights an obvious flaw in the rules, imo

The answer to this question is, there was no evidence of a scheduled time for the event. There was evidence of times that Tomcat was on and Drbone was not. When you rely on the let's just try to meet up then you run the risk of your duel being decided by random draw.

I am very sorry that DrBone feels slighted but as long as there were attempts from both parties to get in the fight then random draw is the only answer.

How do you know there was attempts from both parties? Tomcat is so online atm I'm not even sure he got the message that he won  :headscratch:

From the posts on here it sounds as though they were using the let's just meet up method and also from his posts there was at least once he was on and not DrBone. There a series of 3 posts where the seem to have just missed each other.

Had they scheduled a specific time to meet up and Tomcat had missed it then all DrBone would only need to do is show the exchanges leading to the times scheduled and the DA roster showing Tomcat missing from it and then he would have moved forward. To me using the "let's just meet up sometime" method only requires that you get on line at some point to qualify as an attempt to meet.  There was no meet time for either party to miss to qualify an instant move to the next round. The only thing Tomcat showed with his post about moving on base was that there was a brief period of a few days that he could not be on. Should that mean that he should be treated as if there was no time throughout the rest of the week for him and DrBone to meet? That would be the same thing as Joach1m and my meet should go to him if we can't meet up because I only had to nights this week to get ours in and he did not list any times for me.

I can't vouch for all the review committee members but this was my thought processes when tasked with this missing duel.

To be honest I have tried my best to explain my decision process as best I can on the matter and really any more discussion is going to come off more as arguing than explanation so I will let it go here in hopes of ending the drama.

I will end with this one last comment, make every attempt to schedule 1-2 times for you to meet with your opponent and make those times. That alone will end the need for extensions and/or random draws.

I was commenting on the "Sorry we missed each other, I'm moving and won't be online until I've settled in post".

That sounds like a forfeit to me, instead you throw someone who 'can't be online' into the next round?  You've effectively given next round bye.  What if this had been the semifinals?  Would the finals in the bracket be decided by a random number generator because someone 'can't be online'?  :headscratch:

Wil3ur I understand what your reference is to but we all have obligations and can't be ready to get online 24/7. Those few days that he could mot get on still allowed several other says that he could possibly duel.

Again I can not speak for all the review committee but we can't take just one post and base our decision on that one. It is our job to look at all the posts and form a decision.

I fully understand that not everyone is going to have the same opinion on the matter.

Didn't answer my question...  if this issue happened in the Semi-Finals, and the person had stated they were unable and would be unable to be online...  would the Championship be decided by a random number draw?  Would it count as a forfeit and the champion be crowned without a fight?  Would a random draw be selected of those who lost in the previous round to enter into the next round?  Would the person who 'lost' the random draw be ushered into the next round so there is a fight?  This whole thing seems confusing to me.

In my opinion, short answer, Yes.

Both players made and attempt to get fight in.

Again, this is my opinion. All members of review committee made their own decisions based on their interpretation.

Most likely not.  I try to do everything I can to get the final fight in.  We had one drag out two weeks or so one time.

Would it count as a forfeit and the champion be crowned without a fight?

If it dragged on too long and it became obvious the fight would never happen then yes but not without sufficient notice of a hard determination date.

Would a random draw be selected of those who lost in the previous round to enter into the next round?  Would the person who 'lost' the random draw be ushered into the next round so there is a fight?

No.  They lost and therefore lost the right to elevate to the next round.  Once you've lost you're out and we only work from the current round.

I hope you're no longer confused.

I said for a few tournaments now that I was goin to step away from the decision making process.  This was the first real test of that.  I didn't weigh in at all but did outline what I wanted them to do in terms of reveiwing the thread and the rules.  While I may or may not agree with the decision to come out of the committee I respect it.  Four players, all of whom are in or have played in this tournament, made a judgement call and there's nothing really more fair than being judged by your peers.

BaldEagl does reserve the right to overturn a decision if he feels it is an absolute necessity........ but with that said.......Baldeagl would not overturn a committee decision with out some strong deliberation from all review committee members discussing it......

people who are not in the tournament should keep their mouths shut and comments to themselves..... people who have concerns should send those concerns straight to Bald Eagl and the review committee....... this is the ninth dueling bracket, and it seems the last 3 or so are becoming to dramatic and sometimes it is someone not even in the tournament doing the questioning.....

when one registers/signs up for this dueling bracket..... they are supposed to read the rules and requirements and if they agree with them all. then sign up.......... the signing up is acceptance of how the event is runned..... follow the rules and there will be no issues...... if one can not follow the rules or do not agree....then they should maturely bow out gracefully instead of acting like a fool..... ( <--- last statement is a general statement for everyone in the tournament including myself )

any other person who wants to cause conflict, cause annimosity, cause trouble.......should be banned from the bbs for at least a month for interferring with a brackets results thread and causing community drama that  is uncalled for

Agree 100%. If anybody doesn't like BE's bracket they can go make a better one on their own. INK did that with his Ladder a few months ago and that thing looked awesome. I regret not participating in it. But anyway, I've been participating in the bracket ever since I joined and I've never felt like I've been slighted. All I had to do was get my fights in.
Title: Re: Ninth Tri-Annual Dueling Bracket & Results
Post by: dkff49 on February 18, 2012, 04:24:19 PM
I have enjoyed being in the bracket ever since the first one that I signed up for. I actually shy away from the ladder due to the fact that it lasts so long. The bracket tourney is a nice short term event that comes along every couple of months and I think that BE has done an awesome job with it.

The fact of the matter is that the dueling ladder is a completely different animal all together, that awards the participants with the luxury of being able to schedule their fights at their leisure and if they don't happen the no biggy, nobody's fight is held up from it.

A bracket tourney is a great deal different. If someone doesnt get their fight in it can hold up the entire tournament, hence the reason for the random draws in the first place. If the ladder is what you prefer then that is great then dont come in here if you want both then even better, but be prepared to follow the rules that you signed up for. All the rules in here were vreated because of some people trying to push the limits of the rules. I suspect they pushed them because the winning is far more important than the fights this tourney creates.

I sinccerely hope that the drama eventually goes away, even if it means the tourney stays small as a result. All uis drama has to work on BE and personally I wish it would stop and I hope that BE continues to have them. I will sign up for each and every tourney that he holds.

I do not see it that way...... I was the "1" vote that said you should have advanced while others called for a random draw, DrBone1

and my reasoning for voting that way came directly from some of the comments some have quoted here ( I know I do not have to explain myself, but wanted it known that someone did take the comments of others in to consideration when posting my vote on the matter )

I also was 1 of the (2) votes that voted for sunsfan to advance instead of the random drawing...... again based on comments and pm's I had to read and decide upon......

but majority votes won out  :-/

That really isn't a fair comparison Bone.  Ink's ladder isn't under any pressure to complete rounds of a bracket in a short period of time.  Ink's ladder is an entirely different animal, definitely not comparing apples to apples.

I have been thinking of signing up for one these brackets since the 6th or 7th. But I have been put off by inconsistant decision making.
It's BE's bracket, and he can run it how he wishes, but that won't stop anyone posting any comments in this forum, when they have an interest.

As this is in the General Forum (and not within it's own private forum), you have no right to tell others to 'keep their mouths shut'.
Your post is also a clear example of a small part of the problem.

Enough drama already.

I'll take the blame for this and any previous tournaments.  I do after all reserve the right to make any final decisions.  Sometimes I make the right ones, sometimes I make the wrong ones.  That's just how things go in real life but I do always try to be fair.  Unfortunately, we all have differing opinions on what that is.  Again, it's just the way things are amongst groups of people.

I tried to implement rules to minimize people contantly pushing the limits of what was intended as simply some dueling fun.  I tried making every decision myself.  I tried being lenient.  I tried being strict.  Now I tried leaving decisions to others.  No matter what I try or what I do someone will disagree.

As pointed out the ramdom draws are meant to keep the bracket moving along.  If one duel is missed it holds up the whole bracket.  If you think the random draws were unfair do you think it's more fair to make others wait then have to get their fights in on short notice?  Sorry, but when only three of eight duels could be scheduled in a timely manner last week that was the last straw for me.  As others have already said, you have seven days to get 20 minutes of dueling in.  If you get them in then there's no problems.  If you don't then someone has to make some sort of decision which may not be popular but at least it keeps the event moving along.

People want fewer rules?  I can do that but along with that will come more decisions and judgement calls.  Think the review committe is bogus?  I can get rid of it but than I'll make all the decisions for better or worse.

I do the best I can and then get bashed for it every tournament.

In the end it doesn't really matter.  It's a game.  Just play and have fun.

Dont take my opinions of the matter seriously, In no way am I upset because of this.

I knew when TOMCAT21 sent his reply that he wouldnt be able to make it that he infact was being moved to the 2nd fight.

My point was proven a few pages back.

That really isn't a fair comparison Bone.  Ink's ladder isn't under any pressure to complete rounds of a bracket in a short period of time.  Ink's ladder is an entirely different animal, definitely not comparing apples to apples.
This is true but does this Bracket have a rule/rules that states if you do not both setup a specific time your fight will be determined by a random draw ?
My past experience with this bracket the one who tried to setup the fight/or so they put it(More of a effort than the other player) He will advance. Correct me if Im wrong?

Just asking a question.  :salute

I said before been here for all the brackets except for maybe 1, I enjoy them but since all the rules its all gone down hill.
I appreciate what you do but do not agree with you at all on how you run it.
GL with it though  :salute

(Without prejudice to Dr Bone or anyone else).

The people I respect most in this community BE are those who organise events to make the experience more fun for everyone else. Invariably they take flak for this and seem to hear few words in their support. I admire the fact that people like yourself BE are able to carry on regardless you and your ilk are in my opinion the real champions of the game  :salute

UPDATE

Three duels left to get in this week.  Right now only one of four duels for this week could be scheduled.  These have to be in by 6:00 PM Central.  They are:

TC
Typh Mk I
Yarbles

Tomcat21
F4U-1
SF

LTDangle
F4U-1
haxxor

And lost in all the drama this week:

P39D - TitanMD
109F - TitanMD

<S> Ace8, that 109 fight was hairy!  :salute

Either Ace8 needs to post the results or Titan needs to provide the films.

Ah, cc that BE. Here are the films.

I almost forgot to start the film during the 109F fight. I rolled it about 1 second after our merge.

EDIT: Oh, and Redbull was watching the fight too. He didn't say anything though, so no "unfairness". Film for evidence.

I have been thinking of signing up for one these brackets since the 6th or 7th. But I have been put off by inconsistant decision making.

Not directed particularly at you Dolby but a large minority of Aces High.

Your problem is you take winning far too seriously and anyway in any kid of comeptition there are going to be inconsistencies and difficult decisions. There are teenagers on this forumn and people who are old enough to know better. In Bone' s case I have not looked at what was said and done and am not judgeing but overall far too much time is spent argueing the toss rather than getting on with it.

I am in a bad mood becase I am waiting for my fight before I can get drunk  :D :D :old:

UPDATE

Rather than updating the bracket tonight I've spent all day wrestling with a decision.

I retrospect, the advancement of Tomcat21 last week after posting that he was going to be offline for a period of time may not have been the best decision.  Clearly since he didn't respond to SF this week he's still offline.  I've decided to allow DrBone and SF to fight if they'd like to for the quarterfinal spot.  If they can't or won't then Tomcat21 will still be listed as the random draw winner but because no player can advance by random draw two turns in a row SF will advance to the quarterfinal round by forfeit.  If they do fight then DrBone will be promoted to the Elimination Round 3 position by forfeit and whomever wins between him and SF will advance to the quarterfinal.  I'm not posting the bracket tonight pending what happens here.  You have until Tuesday night at 10:00 PM CST to fight or not after which I'll post the updated bracket.  I know this throws it into SF's lap to fight and possibly lose or to make it difficult to get it in and simply advance.  I hope that both decide to fight.

Both LTDangle and haxxor have PM'd me asking for an extension.  Since they both asked and there were extenuating circumstances I am going to allow an extension until Tuesday night at 10:00 PM CST.

I want to explain that last week after a long hard week at work then so many uncontested duels I simply couldn't spare the effort it required to review every post and make each advancement decision on my own so instead I threw it in the committee's lap.  I still think the committee did a good job.  If Tomcat21 had been around this week then those fights would have proceeded as normal but with him not responding (and I highly doubt he will by Tuesday either) this opens a window of opportunity to allow DrBone back into the tournament.

I know I'm going to take heat on these decisions but like I said, I spent the whole day thinking about this and believe it's in the best interest of the tournament.

All that said there are two duels that can move forward.  They are:

RedBull
Typh Mk I
TC

TitanMD
N1K2-J
Sonic23

And the updated bracket will be posted Tuesday night.

I fully agree, and see no reason why you should take any heat.

Decisions are reversed in many sports to allow for the proper outcome. This sport is no different.

I'll take this opportunity to thank you for putting on this tournament that so many of us enjoy.

Anytime you put this many people together you end up with the age old DIYDDIYD (Damned If You Do Damned If You Don't) situation.

I commend your strength to keep going with these tournaments BE despite all the drama that many like to initiate. You remain level headed and continue to come back no matter how much others seem to want to criticize.

:salute  BE and may there be many more tourneys to come.

BTW thanks for the extension for me and dangle. There was just really no way our times were going to match and this is my short week meaning I work only Weds night into Thurs after noon, leaving me with plenty of open times after I get off work tomorrow (Mon) morning.

The bracket is not to voice opinions or grow egos. It is to have fun and learn something. It grows confidence in newer players and I imagine is suppose to bring the community together.

The only problems that have ever came up have been from people not following the simple rules.

I hope the bracket continues.

Unlucky events happened, some egos just made it worse.
While i agree with Bat, there is no need for the drama. Would be nice if you dudes could grow up and step over it, at least after 2 weeks.

4 very interesting and close fights in this round, cant wait the results!
Heres my bet: Redbull beats TC, bat beats SF, Sonic beats Titan, Jo beats Micky. Then in the semifinal Bat beats Redbull, Jo beats Sonic, then Jo wins the title against Bat.

No need for it Sir. Many of the best ones werent taking part in this bracket.
Next time i wont be drinking as much, hoping i can give you a better fight that way.
With respect, <S>

I wasnt trying to say it disrespectfully i meant to say its kinda funny how me joach1m redbull and drbone were all on different sides of the bracket. i called it before the tourny started that it was possible for us to all be in the final 4.

Round 1 A6m2 - TC
Round 2 c202 - batfink
Round 3 F4u-1 - TC
Round 4 F4u-1 - TC

Some of the most fun fights I've had in the brackets TC, that was very enjoyable indeed. That last kill you made in the 4th was superb!
Could not ask for a better set of fights.

TC asked me to host his films for him as he doesnt have any hosting account.
Films HERE (http://www.mediafire.com/?2bk6rasn8kqbx7r)

Sorry for the delay folks.

Best of luck in the final TC and thanks for the excellent fights.
