At the moment I am hand detailing 512 square miles of a main arena terrain patterns with rivers, roads, mountains, farms, forests, deserts etc. multiple players are hounding me to get in game. yes it has a desert MTO areas and majority ETO areas all on one map. and it uses only default terrain textures and 0 custom objects or settings... frankly I am impressed with the results so far with the amount of variety and asthetic quality of it. but packing in details like this is worse than any skin project I have ever done in terms of shear mind numbing volume of area to be worked on.

I would like to request a set of three small islands in a group on your new map, two of which have an air base, and the biggest one's airbase is also a port. Please? :)
Oh, and I would like to request some trees arranged on one of the three islands, so they spell "Midway" when seen from the sky. :D

outstanding job fester,
I've been tinkering with the TE myself recently and have an entirely different outlook and respect for anyone who makes a MA map, even when i'm flying around now I can see exactly how much the creator has done with elevations / tile transitions.
Hopefully HTC can fix the CBM bug ASAP as it is holding me back a little.

That is very good work. Not that it will matter to me since I have all my graphics turned off so I have frame rate enough to play. All terrain looks like a drunken 2nd graders made them with finger paint on a moonless night to me anyway lol.

To be honest noir, there is only so much HTC can do since they are making money off this deal. If they were all single, had no hobbies or ways to spend money other then housing and the basic nessesities and all the money went back into the game it surely would *not* need any community input.
But there you have it :P

very nice Fester. You show some islands in there...but do not see them on the map on the clipboard you have pulled up. Are the islands in the extreme corners of the map with the large land mass centered?
....and yes, I very much miss FesterMA...

exited in flight :P
but I did set up the airfields so that the runway ends have at least a couple miles of open area at the approach and departure ends that is at or lower than the field elevation.
so it should be easier to take off and land even in heavy b29s from most any field.

No this is the one that had the 3 valleys that had the GV bases in a long line. It also had a single max alt field near the middle of the map that all sides fought to own. The GV battles were a blast on this map and the sea battles in the sea in the upper left corner (where the islands Killnu mentioned) were some of the best fights around.

yes the islands are on the sea area on the northwest side of the map.
the high alt field in the center has some drawbacks in the form of an enemy vbase from each country that is uncapturable. the fights over this small high altitude field have the potential to be epic and it should change hands quite a lot. the logic behind having each country have an uncapturable vbase with no spawn points a short driving distance from this center high altitude base is to keep the base in constant danger of being over run thus giving a counter punch to its high altitude offensive ability. this is a fluid map and will likely reset quickly. having a thorn in the side of this high alt base changing hands often should keep the map from resetting in a couple hours to steamroll hordes once in a while in theory. but most likely if the steamroll gets going this fast moving front design will reset quickly if the horde is not stopped even with this center wrench thrown in the works.
I redesigned the center of the map a bit with what I had learned from building and playing on ozkansas.
A large attempt has been made again to offer as much variety of combat interaction. airfields on the perimeter concentrate on air2air and carrier fights. inland from that and some distance from airfields are chains of vbases.
towards the center an expanded version of the combined air and ground fight that is setup to be operational even after bases are captured or lost and not dependant on a starting setup for maximum fight potential. it uses the ability of some vbases to anchor fights away from the airfields themselves. a setup i stumbled upon in ozkansas that I found the fight results to be very good.
25 miles further towards the center a ring of airbases with no ground spawns to increase their capture difficulty.
the center high altitude base is some distance from the lower rings of bases. it is somthing worth fighting for and defending as it does give a strategic forward operating base for anyone brave enough to try to get bombers out of. there is a high probability I will try my hand at camping in a wirble some distance from the departure end of this field waiting for any heavy sluggish aircraft trying to get out of this base if my country does not own it. would probably get popped bya tank trying this though so I am interested to see how hotly contested this little center conflagration can become.

so in a way HTC gave me more tools to make stuff look cool and add more detail.
you see for some of us part of the fun of aces high is contributing artwork or hosting events or what have you.
I take breaks when I burn out and go do somthing else for a while. but when I come back with renewed interest I also take up the creative parts of the game like map making and skinning because they are beneficial to any player that enjoys the work done. some people will hate it but I feel like my artwork and terrain efforts are well recieved by most players and in a way such things are more praiseworthy to me than being good at the actual gameplay of aces high. though I still hate getting shot down so some things never change.

In my experience, and with me personally, people that volunteer their time and talents to create content and try to help the game and community do so because it's something they have a passion and interest in, not because they expect some kind of compensation.
As I see it, there is no dilema...only drama. People are quick to complain and criticize without fully understanding how and why things are the way they are - this is not limited to maps; just take a good look at the wishlist sometime.

Normally I stay out these things but really no price increase in how many years? yet game keeps improving and inflation go's on yet game keeps improving.
You want better eye candy better this better that you ready to pony up more money? I mean really theres only so much time for the staff there is to do .And Dot's right part of this is up to us if we want more and price to stay the same. BTW fester great map look forward to it loved the old pearl harbor map. :cheers:

That's a beautiful looking map Fester. Having done the hand painting textures thing myself I know how much work has gone into that.
Would be nice to see HTC approve my MA map during my lifetime as well......

I thought my suggestion would very possibly enable HTC to avoid the choise I previously quoted, and get the players more content which they would like.
Your answer to me reads as if you assume I know and do nothing. Take my films of Aces High for example, I make them for my own enjoyment.
For the time it takes to create a film/map/skin, the monetary difference for one month no where near covers minimum wage (if you want to look at it as 'compensation').
It would be a sign of encouragement and appreciation from those at the top. Other combat flight sims have competitions for films of their games.. AH could do a Map competition for a month free?
But I suppose when one is getting something for nothing under the guise of passionate volunteers; why change, isn't that right spokesman Dot.

Because as you stated about the amount vs time spent makes it almost insulting to offer the free month as compensation.
We do give free time for some task, but it in no way covers the time spent.

Nice map fester, i hope it all comes to fruition. I have several maps I'm working on too, albeit not MA size ones. my hats off to you for your time and talent! good job! :salute
map making is about fun, learning new things and about making things more interesting for the community. believe it or not, there are some of us out here, that are not concerned about compensation, but rather about playing the game, bringing more people into the game and making it more interesting for the people already playing the game.
enjoy the fact that there are people out there trying to help make Aces High more fun then it already is!

Ahh you can make your own quick maps and use them offline. That would fix the issue since nothing else matters but maps to you. :)

I believe we have way to many killer trees in ground texture, i can't land a C47 or find GVs, looks like the WW2 was fought in Amazon rainforest only;,if you could do some lumbering would be great.

it (the terrain) uses only default terrain textures and 0 custom objects or settings...
I am very impressed with the fruits of his labour as well as the tools that HTC has offered us to work with. (A downed tree object would make great replacement for some of the numerous hedges that are appreciated as well = new wishlist item).
In case this question has been addressed here in the previous 5 pages that I did not complete, please humor me but, my worries are that hand detailing with even stock textures and objects might still drag on frame rates more so than "standard tiles"???? :headscratch:
I hope the above is not the case or may have a minimum impact at its worst. I have always been a fan of Fester's work, especially his early H2H stuff. :old:

I think by "hand detailing" he's talking about painting the the ground textures inside the terrain editor instead of using an external program like Photoshop to paint the terrain with grayscale which is them imported into the TE to apply the textures. So, it's just placing the textures and does not affect frame rates.
"Hand detailing" gives much more control over exactly where a texture is placed, thus making the terrain look exactly as the creator wants. I do this with my terrains, as well as "hand detailing" the elevations to fine-tune the overall layout of the land.

Yeah, a few of us have been test flying it to make sure it performs to specification, along with the Meteor, due to be released I think on Monday. You're gunna love them !

Textures look ok, problem is the underlying graphics engine and mesh. You still end up with Pyramid mountains, flat terrain and lots of straight angles no matter what res texture you map onto it will never look even close to this.

Textures look ok, problem is the underlying graphics engine and mesh. You still end up with Pyramid mountains, flat terrain and lots of straight angles no matter what res texture you map onto it will never look even close to this.

Nor will the game have the frame rates most enjoy now nor would players experience smooth air combat maneuvering.
My need to virtually 'sight see' terrain in a dog-fighting game is admittedly not nearly as strong as some that think
without such the .... ugly sky is falling to the ugly ground. I even enjoy the view from the ground. :D
Yes, sometimes it really does sound like there's an element of the community that want AH to just change itself ... away.

I've seen a few vids on it a ways back. If I recall correctly, you plane's guns also rearm? Or was that an alpha/beta thing?

No screenshot is from FSX and Payware aircraft, but shows what is possible and like I said even if AH could reach 1/10th that level would be a big improvement from current graphics.
Today, good graphics doesn't mean have to have poor FM and Physics. That's just a AH community mindset after nearly 14 years with the same graphics engine.

did you get in on the closed beta? it won't be open beta til next month. from what i've read, arcade mode is the only thing enabled but there is supposed to be a "full realism" mode...aka, engine management. it can't be any worse than the other mmo flight sim turd that recently went open beta, warthunder.

I played Wings of Prey, which happens to be the predecessor to WarThunder and I had plenty of fun with it. Arcadedy as hell, but damn I had fun with it. According to Steam, I have over 170 hours on it over the past 2.5 years. The gameplay wasn't great, but the graphics more than made up for it. Dragging out dogfights where I could easily win just to suck in the beautiful effects and scenery.
One thing about a flight sim with amazing graphics - you can actually play with icons off. In AH, turn icons off and you would have a super difficult time finding anyone. In Wings of Prey, with icons off, I can spot planes as far as the visual range allowed (around 10 miles ish) as vague dots. In a massive furball, it was plenty of fun flying and trying to identify friend from foe.

yeah I'm on closed beta right now idk warthunder is better than world of warplanes I've tried both don't like either of them when I try new games I compare them to AH and so far nothing has come close to the realism AH has except maybe DCS which is way to indepth for me but that's cause it has a VERY steep learning curve

it's been a while but i could have swore wop had a 3.5-4 mile dot visibilty range. you should try warthunder, the fight model feels exactly the same.

Whoops, miles? I meant 10K (10,000 yards? Like in AH). AH has the same I believe, dots disappear after 9-10K for me, but in WoP, the plane can be seen much more clearly and doesn't "warp" like it does AH. I understand the design behind the "warping" dots (planes closest to you updates their position the fastest), but fighting without icons in WoP just feels like a better experience. I'll take a look into WarThunder but I go to AH for mutiplayer and WoP for singleplayer, so I'm not sure if anything in WarThunder will interest me that AH and WoP hasn't already.

Back in AW I flew your easy mode plane for a while about 4-5 months then put it down. It had no eggs or drop tank if I remember right and there was just nothing to do with it. When it came out here in AH I flew it for a sortie and put it down.
