Rules are:
You can't vote for your squad.. That's it. Please tell us why the squad you think is the best.
My vote: The Blue Knights. While they are a shadow of what they were in 2003, they still are a group of good sticks (A2A). They hold to the values of the early AH experience - the air war. Also, it is encouraged to steal a fellow member's kill - so is cursing on vox.
-
Well, with those rules I guess what you are really asking is "Which is the 2nd best Squad in AH". :devil
-
exactly :aok

-
my vote would be JG11. their execution and tactics are superb. Always a joy to fly with, and always a joy to watch them kill all the red guys!!
-
Hard question because to me there are two different types of squads. Historical themed and Non Historical themed.
So I'm going to post my top pick for both.
Historical:
JG-11 hands down. Nobody sticks to their historical guns with as much enthusiasim and skill as JG-11.
Non Historical:
The Muppets. This seems to be the funnest squadron in AH in my book. They remind me of the Oakland Raiders of the old days. Just a bunch of individualistic hell raisers that will kick the stuffing out of you. If I wasn't such a history nerd I'd want to be a Muppet.
-
The Muppets also inarguably have the best squad name as well.
-
JG11. Can't count the times that I have found myself flying around with these fellows in the middle of tons of red guys. Fearless, determined and organized with a decidedly Luftwaffe leaning in plane choice and tactics. :aok
-
JG 11
-
Allied
56th FG or 80th FS
Axis
JG11
Rogue
AoM

Rogue :) I like that and it is appropriate. My vote goes to the Blue Knights. They aren't afraid to get into a brawl.

the best squad should be determined in a tournament :noid

I'm with bear on this one.. Rogue... Love it!
I'd like to say the Blue-Knights or the Muppets(and not because I'm in it , but yeah, I'm breaking the 'rules') but many of the members of boths squads have been in each others squads....
-
Lets not leave out the Bomber Squadrons
Ragged Irregulars , IMO .
If 100th BG was still around then I would go with 100thBG

You're just upset that the only person you have on your side is Derpway. :lol
My vote goes to the Blue Knights. :aok
-
Keep in mind I only fly KNIGHTS in LWMA and I currently have no squad... BUT,
I have had many a good evening flying alongside the FreeBirds... VOTE 1
I've also had the honor of flying against some of the JG11... (not for long, but i learned what NOT to do) :devil
-

so this is how it goes....high school popularity.
I want to see competition, rage quits and cries, not a size contest.

Shifty, I agree with you that there are two types of squads.
I have to say of all the squads I've come across the two most accurate flying historical squads are both on the rook side. Devil Dogs clearly run some great missions and ET37 is the king. 4th FG Debden has always flown the P51 wingman tactics better than any squad I have run across. Those two get my vote for best historical squads.
Really, there are a lot of great squads out there in the game. They all have fun and many are rolling bases as I type. No matter what I say on Ch. 200, you all have my respect. :salute
-
To work with, I'm always pleased when I read FSO orders and see I'm working with JG11 or KN
-
I've never been one for rules.
JG5 "Eismeer"
Not only did they have to rely on hand me down aircraft in WW2 but in AH they have to make do with a hand me down CO. :D
-
My vote would go to the guys i bump into Sat and Sun mornings
The Raw Prawns (always good gents to fly with or against)
Duxford Wing RAF (Hivolt and company....need i say more) :aok
-
Are* the FreeBirds really apart of this running. . .
This is from a stick who has only experienced 5 months of the AH community (good and bad ).
I may not have had the chance to fly with all the great folks out there is all. So my experiences are limited to *grimaces* the FreeBirds. FBBob, and FBDred are at least entertaining and always trying to group up with teamates.
The most fun i've had flying thus far in the game has been taking off at the same time with any group... (it just happens to be them more often than not)
I hate being lonely on the climb out.... :airplane:

:huh and you been here 8 months? He's right, sorry.

I meant myself, as in, i'm a rookie and haven't had the chance to fly with all the great folks that are out there... I didn't mean anyone else or any over poster...
-
JG11 hands down the second best squad in the game :devil
-
:huh and you been here 8 months? He's right, sorry.
He's right about what? Why are they not a part of this running?
I asked, no response. All you two have said is that they should not be part of the running in a personal opinion poll of "best squad." Opinion seems to be a keyword here, and since it is, well...
I'll go first, I learned more from the FB's in half a dozen mssn's than I did from 2 combined months on the bish and rook sides when I first started. I'm sure there have been countless others they taught as well. Bob always, Dred and Crabby willl answer a question honestly most of the time if they know it's a noob/near noob without snarky or condescending tone.
HiVolt was the only one during those 2+ months over there to spend anytime trying to get this noob acquainted. :salute HiVolt
Anyhow, what is it that makes the best squad? Everyone's opinion will differ don't ya think?

Why do I need to explain my opinion? It's based on 11 yrs of playing and experience and I don't consider them in the best squads conversation.

And this is why i thought of them... With all the talk on here about "why we have no players", "how to attract more players", "FRESH MEAT", i'd think that the praise of a few members of a squad for attempting to make the game enjoyable for all levels of pilot would count for something.
Perhaps in 11 years, I will have a different opinion for different reasons. But their help and guidance is why I put their name up there.
 Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even though they are wrong.

Your criteria for "best squad" differs from mine and you're welcome to your opinion. You have your reasons and I have mine. You're going to have to deal with that I guess.

forgive me Bear76, I'm just a wide-eyed newb.

I look forward to flying alongside and against some of the more 'experienced' pilots. If you're not learning, you're already dead. :salute

Blue Knights..... Arse kickers.
I'd also throw out the Arabian Knights....easily one of the (if not THE) classiest squads in AH....which explains why I'm not an AK anymore. :D :rofl

What flashes to my mind:
The old jg5
80th
BKs
The old KN
the LD before/since the loose horde period
theese are/were way above the others in the aspects i did care about

Flying Circus is a great squad filled with great guys. I agree about the AKs, although most of the guys I knew from the early 2000s have moved on.
-
I can only offer an opinion on squads I have been in, and I've been in quite a few. Arabian Knights was alot of fun, great squad. JG11 which I am in now is the best for what I want. Full immersion, historically based luftwaffe only, great leader, excellent teammates and more fun then anyone deserves. I want to give a shout out thugh to VMF-222. Lead by Juggo, not a very big squad and for the most part FSO's is where they have decent numbers and participation. This squad has taken many new guys and helped them enjoy the game. There you will find my favorite wingman of all time, Wiley. He's an absolute ball to fly with, always laughing, saved my butt so many times I lost count. I wandered around alot trying out different squads and I would always come back to them because I knew I would be welcomed and I'd have fun again. If it were not for my absolute love for Luftwaffe aircraft and having finally found "my place" in this game with JG11 I would be bouncing back to them again. You guys that are reading this that do not have a squad, ask for an invite to VMF-22 and fly some FSO's with some great guys.
-
Interesting post and interesting responses as well.
This is like asking who is the best team in the NFL, NHL, NBA, MBL?
Who is the best music group? What is the best car to drive?
It never stays the same. There are ups, downs and changes to the environment which in turn creates differences.
There are many great sticks out there no doubt and many great squads. IMHO it is very situational.

How can someone who has (to my knowledge..which may be wrong) never actually BEEN IN a squad have an opinion on anything squad related for that matter?

One of those moments when a drunk squaddie hollers something unintelligible but somehow oddly profound in the middle of a massive high stress fight against overwhelming odds. Everyone immediately begins laughing so hard, soda and drinks spit through noses, our planes auguring into the ground, etc. I am sure you fellas have had those moments... :aok Now it sums up those who think a bit to highly of themselves. They ain't got no pancake mix... :D

Absolutely insane. I think it came from some youtube vid of a fella incoherently ranting about something and he just spouted the now famous "pancake mix" line.

When was that, like 4 years ago? I'm talking right here right now, all you guys make are excuses. I've never seen you in Koth or any competition, but you do seem to talk big. I don't see how ventrilo or teamspeak would make us compensate for a lack of skill... :headscratch:

I wish it was interesting enough for me to sub in again, but this thread represents well the state of the game. Lots of talk, no action.

We'll take your squadron more seriously when you take the training wheels off your Spitfires.

because the 109 is a difficult ride ? :rofl good one

If we're not going to use any of the metrics available to determine who's the actual best squad, maybe this thread should be called "Which is coolest squad in AH?"
I would concede defeat on that topic:
- we mostly fly allied planes and like to win
- we have a giant troll anklehumper attached
- some of us are a bit cheeky and provocative

For those of you who have asked me to reply and also for those giving the nod to JG11 - Thank you - it is appreciated and more so due to the nature of the unit, and the restrictions and particulars involved in being a member of the Sonderstaffel. So for the sacrifices my guys have made over the years and their dedication to our mission - We Thank you.
‘Best’ of course is completely subjective. And I think Ammo is just having a bit of fun with this thread, but as mentioned above, I’ll give my thoughts here for the sake of those offering theirs. Guys new to the game may have yet to even hear of some of the squads mentioned here, and time in game, personal interest, and personal recognition of what makes a ‘best’ anything…is always particular to the individual.
Now, when I came to the game in 2005, 4 squadrons stood out as those who were dominating the airspace of AH.
The Arabian Knights, The Blue Knights, The Army of Muppets, and the 56th Fighter Group. One of these units alone could tie up an entire map, and many have been the times these units simply dominated the game play. There were and are, and always will be other excellent units as well, but those 4 made an impression on me for the following reason:
They gave a new player, and a new CO a fair shake.
Guys like (AKDog and AKWxman - AK’s) - ( Xargos, Steve, M00t - AoM) - (Nomde, Yucca, - 56th) and (Slapshot, Killnu, Karaya - BK’s) and others too, all gave me a shot when I was just the latest Luftnoob to create another Jag. Helpful, supportive and excellent role models, I looked at all these squads and what made them ‘Best’ to me…and tried to incorporate as much as I could from them, into my own efforts at building a ‘Best’ Squadron. For these reasons the above will always be the Greatest Squadrons in AH of all time - to this player.
Now all things change. Squads not only come and go…but ebb and flow as well, as far as memberships, goals, active game time, level of presence…etc…etc…
My MA time is not what it used to be, and having never been a base capturing type, I base my opinions on other factors outside of this bucket. Fighter performance, teamwork, mission success rate, and behavior both in game and here on the bbs. I can only really base an opinion on actions taking place in the Friday Night Squadron Operations Arena…as that is where I focus my attention and efforts, and measure my peers from as well. Not only…is it where the real squadron abilities can be showcased, to succeed a squad must exhibit certain qualities and skills that I value over those needed to succeed in the MA. Again…this is my opinion and m/o…and doesn’t mean it should be anyone else’s or is necessarily the only, or correct one.
There are many good squadrons in FSO and in the game. If I was forced to pick just one…and erased everything in my mind except present day performance and success rates…I would choose from the perspective of the most challenging and difficult foemen I have faced on Friday nights the last few years.
This Squadron would be - G3-MF.

I have been following this post for past couple of days and pretty much agree with all that has been said. Its obvious the best squads are the ones that have been around for awhile. Being a "newer" CO myself I understand why that is mostly because its so hard to get talented people at all because everyone gravitates to these Squads that have been around and do have such good players. I have been back to the game for a little over a year now (after a 11 year hiatus). Most of my time has been spent on the Knights so I don't have a real broad stroke of all the Squadrons out there.
I would have to vote the 56th FG though as my top, they are packed with talented sticks and they always seem to be right in the middle of the action in the MA. Though I hate that they change countries (cause that means I will die many times to them) I think it also adds to what makes them so good they experience all that there is to see from the different sides of the globe. Personally too I have had them reach out to me and offer to help my small little group in whatever endeavors we embark upon.
Just to add a few more thoughts though I have had some good experiences with the FB's and they are very goal oriented in terms of doing whats best for the country, whether its porking ords and troops to running big missions to take bases or hit strats. POTW always seem to be posting up good finishes all the time as well and some really great people that are fun to play with in both those squadrons. Also have always been encouraged by the CHawks who have some great people playing for them who are always fun to fly with.
It is a hard thing though to pick just one squadron because there is so many that have been around for so long and stood the test of time such as Stampf eluded to. There are so many different factors that can play into it from raw talent of players, teamwork, performance in other aspects of the game i.e. FSO or Scenarios, to something as simple as they are a friendly group that tries to help out all people in the game whether new or not. Something to consider I would think is how they are in the community not just performance, is it a group that helps new players out, do they encourage and help new CO's by trying to hold them accountable and show them the way to lead their group so that the newer Squads might be able to sustain their lives and add to the community as a whole such as was done for Stampf in his earlier days. Its kind of a testament to all the bigger, better squads that are in this game when as a new CO I do have such a hard time trying to get people to join because I don't have the recognition that some of these groups do.
I personally SALUTE all you CO's out there that have a group of guys that earn the respect of other players in the game and try to maintain the integrity and idea of what Squadron play is all about. I know there are some great Squads out there I have seen it in my "short" time of being apart of this game and have had a lot of fun in running in Scenarios (AK's, 91stBG), the MA (TA's, JG's, 97th) it has been a pleasure and I have learned something from probably everyone of these groups.

You have a Koth win? I know I do and that was a while back when I wasn't as good.
The Few has like 2 people who play regularly these days....not a very cool bunch if you ask me. What keeps me coming back to the game is my squad...maybe if your squad was as awesome as mine...you would still have a subscription....run along now...Triton answered your wish. Used to be The Few codename The Many horded the early morning hours....was really "Great"

:aok :aok Great post.

I like and think all the AH squads are great.....except for the ones I don't. :D :bolt:

Best squad in game , well it should really the one that makes you log on and look forward to fly with or against . For myself when FSO comes around , I always look at the Allies squad and see what is going thrown at us (JG11 :aok )and several always make me crab the joystick a little tighter.
Best squad , well I've stayed with Stampf and JG11 group for over 5 1/2 years , gets my vote , but again I'm partial it's what ever squad that gives you the fun factor . so to all the squads big or small :salute
-
I've mostly been a loner during my time in AH so don't know much about squads except when I run into them.
I had the pleasure of flying in a couple of scenarios with JG11 and have run into a few of them in the MA from time to time. They work together well, are great guys and are fun to fly with.
Muppets probably have the best pilots. Depending on who you meet you might even get a fair one on one in even if other's loiter nearby but that's not always the case.
No others currently stand out. Most of the rest are just horde squads. Some are OK at it while others suck and killing the entire group is easy. A very few use teamwork but make it fun to fight them win or lose. I won't name names but I know who they are in each case.
So many have come and gone over the years there's no way to remember them all but honorable mention to LTAR's who held a unique niche as the best Ostwind squad for several years.
Finally I have to give a nod to the group I led in the BoB scenario; the 92 Squadron RAF Spitfires. While not an official AH squad I had a great time leading that group.
-
Bk's owned your tournament baldeagl and you say know other squad stands out lol.
Since I can't vote for my squad I would say army of Muppets followed by the few would top my list.
-
Appreciate all the love from Muppets. My vote goes to shawks squad.
Whatever it's current incarnation may be

The Arabian Knights, The Blue Knights, The Army of Muppets, and the 56th Fighter Group. One of these units alone can tie up an entire map, and many have been the times these units simply dominated the game play. <S>
Fixed! :aok
Having been a member of both squads highlighted above....I can state both are top notch...especially given I'm no longer with either to drag them down. :D
AKs are the classiest squad in AH by a long shot.. They are also one of the best FSO squads.
Muppets are furballers without equal...well....except maybe for the the Blue Knights...who are in many cases ex-Muppets anyway ;)
:rofl...troll-grenade pin pulled and thrown.... :bolt:

The only ex muppet in bks is stang, and he was on a super secret spy mission to uncover the depths of the tranny underworld. He does all our "dirty" work.

Then it's the few I still enjoy chats with them. :)

In Reference to this thread the Best Squad I like to fly with is the Group of People who I enjoy flying with everyday...... so I think this whole thread is biased We have Our Historical Squads who fly and the squads who fly together to just take base's and have fun in the game, So in all reality how is this a fair Thread??? The Whole Meaning iabout all this is We have a great time Flying with Friends who became more then just Virtual Friends in the game we all look out for each other so since 1993 in the Virtual Games of AW to Aceshigh I am Biased I have made to many friends here and plan on making more friend;s in this game, so I can not Pick who is the best squad in the Game

I don't really keep track of who's in what squads during the tournament since people move around so much but yes, I probably should have at least given a nod to the Blue Knights in the same breath with the Muppets. Widowmakers probably also deserve honorable mention here but I don't think any of them are around anymore.
AK's are one of those that make it fun to fight against, or at least they used to... haven't really seen them around in a while but my playtime has diminished. Aces and 8's were always fun to fight against too but not as good as the AK's.
Sorry if I forgot someone... age does that to you.

You have a Koth win? I know I do and that was a while back when I wasn't as good.

Exuse me, but i had to smile reading that statement. Not saying youre not "as good", nor that i am any better than anyone. Only asking you, not to sound like one i deeply dislike.

If that was a jab, Dolby, it was mistimed (i.e. I'm no longer a Muppet).
Personally I think the "new" Muppets are fine and just as interesting as the "old" ones.

I've always admired the 80th FS "HeadHunters" and their P-38 killing machines.
I enjoyed tossing back a few cold ones with Shifty and Tex78 from the 56 FG. So I'm quite fond of these guys too.
BTW, Fulcrum was a pleasure to fly with and the only thing he brought down, while with the AK's, were bad guys.

Used to be The Few codename The Many horded the early morning hours....was really "Great"
spent all this time trying of something cool to say, but I ain't cool so I came up with nothing :D We are your colors? I don't know what's that squad you're talking about.
I never won a Koth unfortunately. Maybe if "euro" koth wasn't at midnight on friday, when I'm toasted from the week and usually drunk.
The Few is a great bunch, great enough to keep in the game while I was thinking of leaving, and fun enough to make me log in and talk on the evil VENTRILO even as english is not my native tongue. Sadly euro squads are taking a big hit with the death of the MA at euro times, and 2 fights a week isn't worth it, even if you're having fun with your mates on vent.
These new Muppets don't have the appeal of the pre-2009 Muppets

Tanks triton283986 I appreciate it.
My vote goes to TOP GUN :aok

Sorry Nuke, with your flying knowledge, it would take a medicore amount of luck to win a koth, just like i had a load of it back in 2010 november.
By the way, Dolby 'n Nuke, this goes right back at your own squadrons. The old members of the Few are gone, switched to other squads, are on a break or have quit the game. Remember to the "Teh Many" period? A bunch of wannabes hording with the "big guys", thinking that they are someones... True, it got a LOT better than that in the last couple years, still, throw the first rock on my squad when yours is just a tad better.
What about the JG5? Was full of guys i loved to play with and against. Dont you know, Dolby, why i left your squadron? Why have RedBull left? Revo? Latrobe? Zach? Cheers, lad.
Doh.
-
Gentlemen.
This thread is digressing as so many of them do. Is it possible we can, as a group, swing it back to the positive side.
It is always easiest to be negative and air your grievances and dislikes but I think most will agree that those actions do not positively contribute to our community or our game.

well believe it or not koth is a fair bit about strategy, and when I actually get there I'm often in the last 2, so with a bit of luck it may pass...but I would have to care first and 1V1 equal planes is not what I like most about this game. Actually I find that 1V1 equal planes pretty much stupid, its like playing street fighter in mirror match only.
Also if you see squads this way, it's just sad. A squad is about having a good time together whatever the skill level (not wannabies hanging with the big guys, what age are you, 14yo?), and eventually achieve things together. You have no idea how "the many" period was fun to play, and I'd love to bring that back.
The hate people like you expressed was like the cherry on the cake and was also great fun.

Dear SirNuke,
Adding numbers to my name cuts me deep. I don't know why you would do that. :( If you were upset by my poking fun at your girlish fussing, I apologize. Instead of making those comments, I should have recognized your special flower status and respected your right to fuss about the squad you don't fly for anymore not getting as much love as it's due.
I look forward to your friend request on Facebook.

Slash, asking a lot from memory; Fester, Sads, Hlbly, Irishone, Kappa, Scotch, Skyrock, Grizz, Sunbatt, Sunsfan.
Debrody,
You left because I was recruiting people you didn't know, and it was making you uncomfortable. (as per your pm)
As for the others, (Zach and Latrobe aside) they had a similar issue, the people I was recruiting weren't elite enough for their standards of elitism.
I wouldn't stand for their will being imposed on me, I refused their want for control over who I gave a chance to.
So off they went claiming I was tyrannical leader as a cover over their snobbery.

It's hard for me to pick a "best" as esp. recently with numbers down like they are, there may be only 2 or 3 members of a squad flying at any given time.
I know the Claim Jumpers pull some nice numbers together. Lots of the FB's and CH's are good folks. A bunch of the AK's flew cover for a 49thFG bomber mission last weekend, that was fun. There a lots of good squads out there :salute

Nuke: those use to find a fair fight to be stupid who either dont like it or cant win it. You might be a bit of both. Dont let me wrong, you can still fly much better than 80% of the MA. But what ever interests you, what you find fun in, its your money, your life. People are different and thats why life is wonderful.
Dolby: if you really think that, thats shocking and sad. Some day you will understand, its not about the known ACM, its about the willing: see what Valen turned into, from a joker to a great fight. Its all about the personalities you have recruited - noone likes to be handled as a step-child in his own squad, especially when he considers himself a founding member. Is it your standard defending mechanism, when 6 are saying the same thing, all the 6 are wrong, snob and egoist, but only you are right? Consider this, open your eyes... please. You were very different from this, just a year ago.
-
Deb, are you saying your PM was a lie? I suppose I must have had my eyes shut to your deceit.
Valen is exactly why I gave people a chance.

<S>
Thank you sir!
-
Lazer was too.
Yes. Yes he was.
How is it I know this yet a member of his current squad does not? :D
-
He must have left it out of his resume.
there is a very rigid process , resume submitted (with references) , psych test , 2 rounds of interviews , trial period
something must have gone astray with this one.
-
that, or apparently I don't care as much as they do.
but, as I stated, lazs will, as acting disciplinary officer, administer harsh punishment.

Dave, I am humbled. But I am glad to have gotten to know you over the years. You have done a fantastic job with the projects that you were involved within AH. You also have done a tremendous job with JG11. I know it been a while since we have seen each other in game, as I left for a couple of years after severe burnout and a JG26 issue. I am now flying on a somewhat regular basis a couple of evenings a week and getting back into the swing of things. If I ever had a question for you, it was answered in detail and vice-versa.
If I am ever in New York, I have a date with the Firebird. I'll buy the tank of gas, or two, or three. :rock
Thank you for being a friend over the years.

The best squad is different for different players and yet similar to just as many. The best squad is one you enjoy being in weather that's historical based, fighter squad, bomber squad, ect. The variables are numerous thus I say the best squad is the one u enjoy flying in.

Your squad is the best squad no matter what squad it is, even no squad.

I'm of the opinion that every squad listed thus far are good/great squads. My personal all time favorite (my first real squad), The Assassins no longer play.
