Title: So, what do you drive?
Post by: Widewing on July 15, 2007, 11:23:08 PM
I find it interesting how a person's automobile frequently reflects their personality.

Therefore, let's see what the players of Aces High drive day to day.

I posted this here rather than in the O'Club, as many of the O'Club crowd are not subscribers to Aces High.

Here's my daily ride...

I commute just 11 miles, four days a week. I sold my 2002 WRX in 2005 after a series of clutch problems drove me to distraction. It was fast and it was fun, but clutch chatter (warped friction disks) was a source of great annoyance.  This problem was well known to Subaru and commonplace. My local dealer replaced the clutch twice free of charge. Nonetheless, this problem and miserable gas mileage were wearing me out. If I needed to drive in snow, I had my wife's Grand Vitara. So, the WRX was consigned to weekend drives and I bought a new 2003 Suzuki Aerio SX, with 5 speed manual for daily use. Reliable, great utility, good fuel mileage, adequate power and handling made the little car a favorite for every day use.

After the WRX was gone, I still longed for a fun sport ride. The Aerio SX is no pig, but it was not designed to be pushed hard without a fair amount of protest. Thus, I began looking into after-market performance upgrades. I found a local engine builder who had experience tuning Suzuki's 1.8 liter engines. After almost $3,200 invested in engine upgrading and a more durable clutch, the 2.0 liter twincam was generating 188 hp at the drive wheels (about 210 hp at the crankshaft). No supercharger, no turbo. Requires 93 octane fuel, however.

I invested in a Progress suspension kit, but selected B-G springs. The thicker and adjustable anti-roll bars loaded the car to the point that I had to purchase a  shock-tower brace from SWT (Suzuki Works Techno) to stiffen the chassis. I added a set of SWT wheels. I elected to avoid going to 45 series tires to keep the ride reasonably compliant. I replaced the 195/55-15 Falkens with a set of 205/50-15 W speed rated Kumho Ecsta ASXs. Brembo rotors squeezed by ceramic brake pads haul it down from speed.

Performance is superior to the WRX in every category, except 0-60 mph. The all wheel drive WRX gets great bite off the line. However, the Suzuki is faster to 100 mph, and its max speed is 144 mph (drag limited). In handling, the Suzuki is vastly better than the WRX. Around a skid pad, my WRX was capable of about .82 G. The Suzuki exceeds .92 G on the Kumhos. In terms of overall performance, it fits in between a 2007 GTI and a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3. Not bad for a car that could be purchased with low mileage for about $6,000 and another $6,700 in Engine, suspension, brake and wheel/tire upgrades. Compare that to $23k for a basic GTI and $26k for the Mazda. Insurance is dirt cheap as well.

I just purchased a set of Kumho V710 race tires in 205/50-15 for weekend autocrossing. These are mounted on a set of WedsSport racing wheels and were heat cycled by the tire distributor. These tires are replacements for my well used Avon R-A tires. I won't get to use them until Mid August as my weekend schedule is rather full with family things and vacations. However, the Zook should stick like glue.

My regards,

Widewing

I drive a 1999 toyota tacoma as my daily driver.  I also have a 2007 nissan titan that I recent purchased but the toyota meets my needs adequately and is relatively inexpensive to operate so I'll probably keep it until it complete falls apart.  I hate spending money on cars.

I have a '96 Nissan Sentra SSS. SR20 2Ltr motor 110Kw, 0-100Kph 8.0secs, top speed 210Kph. Goes ok, hardly an uber rapid beast, but not bad for a daily punt.
Quite rare and was *the* 4-door hot-hatch of its time.

This one aint mine. Mines red with bigger alloys.

1990 Toyota 4x4 pickup.

I bought it brand new in Pocatello, Idaho back when life was good and things were going my way.

Almost 208,000 miles on it now.

It's very tired.

Dented and rusted out and vibrates so bad I try to keep it under 45 when I'm going somewhere.

I'm hoping it will pass inspection next month. If it doesn't, I don't know what I'm going to do. I can't afford a car payment right now.

I have had many cars and still have them all just can't afford to keep them all on insurrance all the time :)

First car was a red 1979 Pontiac Trans Am that is now just waiting for a new set of tires so I can get the new tranny into it :)  Second and probably most reliable POS I will ever own and one that I am currently driving is a beat up 81 Chevy G10 van with the in line 6 and 3 speed manual that I bought for $500 and havn't had to fix much of anything on other than replace the cluch once.  Then came the 92 Chevy corsica that the wife fliped a time and a half (that was great fun lol).  Lets see there was the 82 ford escort that blew a head in less than a month I have a dislike for Fords..
I have a 1968 GMC 3/4 ton custom truck with the 351E V6 that I drove for a while but at 11 miles per gallon well lets just say it hasn't left the yard in a while. And the last vehicle I usually drive is a red 89 Chevy Suburban that someone had blown the origional engine out of and had a nice old school 350 put in it's place so I don't have any of that electronic crap hooked up to it :)

Wifes cars are an 89 Buick Park Ave that has a few issues that need worked out  and will probably sell at some point and she is currently diving a 97 Buick Skylark.

Wife drives a 1988 Eagle Summit that we bought used 7 years ago for 350$.
No 4th gear in it, but if you rev it good in 3rd then slip it into 5th you can get around it. Had fuel pump problems 3 years back until I gave up and hotwired the pump to the heater fuze via a piece of heavy speaker wire.

Myself I walk out of the bedroom 2 steps to the bathroom in the morning. Then another 3 steps to my "office" and I'm there. Normally I drive in deerskin slippers but some days I do go with a pair of elcheapo tennis shoes with velco straps for heavy duty work.  The slippers cost 5 -6$ and last 6 months to a year so pretty good mileage on them.  :)

I drive a 1990 F150 with over 300,000 on it. Stock 4x4, I6 and 5 speed. I've replaced the front wheel bearings & lockout hubs about 4 times .... some handsomehunk keeps thinking fording streams is cool.

GF drives a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix with 250,000 miles on it. Runs like a top. It leaks a little coolant, trans fluid and oil, but we are talking ounces over a months time. I credit the longevity to Mobil 1. The next new car we get will get nothing but Mobil 1 in it.

I had an incident with one of the local "Hey look how big my tailpipe is" boys. We were at a stop light, he started revving it up (breem, brreeeeeemmmmmmm, breeeeeeem) and looking at me, I just laughed and nodded. When the light turned green I left him eating my dust. At about 1/8 mile (or so) he was at least 5 car lengths behind me. I just wish I could have told him how old and how many miles the car had on it.

We are currently looking for a newer-used SUV. Along the lines of the Escape.

No pics, both cars are nasty dirty & the truck has some wheel-well cancer as well as the "peeling paint" syndrome common to that year.

Current cars:

'85 Merkur XR4Ti (Ford Sierra for you Europeans) 2.3L turbo
'95 Toyota pickup 3.0L V6

I have owned in the past:

'75-'79 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT (I've owned three, wish I still had one)
'84 Ford Escort GT
'82 Audi 4000 Quattro Coupe
'87 VW Golf GTi

And I am thinking of taking a VW Quantum sedan with the 2.2L turbo diesel from my cousin and using it as a daily driver since it gets 50mpg.

I wanted an XR4Ti when they were new, but at $19k in '85 they were WAY too expensive for me. I bought mine about 7 years ago for $500 because it didnt run. The Fords of the time have a little module, TFI module, on the distributor that goes out regularly so I suspected that is what it was. I brought a TFI module and a battery with me and had my Dad come. I paid the guy the $500 and after the deal was done I switched the TFI right there in his driveway, hooked up the new battery and drove it home!

He was a little upset that it was that easy to fix, but hey that was not my fault. :)

Its a pretty nice car now, but they are still not really worth anything other than I like it.

LOL. I forgot to add, I had an '89 Mustang 2.3 too. I forgot about that car, but it was pretty forgettable.

Yep, if you own anything with a Ford 2.3 you need to carry a spare timing belt and a spare TFI module. The good thing is though, its a non-interference engine so when (not if) the timing belt breaks you wont bend any valves. Just put the crank and cam on TDC and pop a new belt on.

Currently, I drive a 2006 Toyota RAV 4, which is a bit too 'college-chick' for me to be really happy about, but I can't really justify anything bigger. It drives really well though - the V6 option makes it a bit of a BMW baiter. Its 4wd drive, which is a must during the harsh Southern Californian winters. :aok

The missus has a VW GTi which would be a lot more fun if we'd gone for the stick rather than auto. It also has a nasty habit of developing expensive problems.

I have my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab. She's 2 wheel drive but I do have a 2 inch lift on her. Nice set of Mickey Thompson wheels. I like the lift and the wheels because it gives my baby a more aggresive stance. She's also packing a 5.9L V8 with a K&N intake kit. She will get up and go when I push the little peddle on the right. Gas mileage sucks, but for me it's worth it to drive a big truck. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Citroën Xantia 2,0i 16V SX. My first and so far only car. (I couldn't be bothered getting out in the parking lot, so this is a pic of a similar car. Same colour and condition)

It'a from 1996 and had done 210,000km when I bought it in Jan 2006.

Now at 295,000km.
So far I'm pleased. Had to replace this and that from normal wear, but so far starts and runs fine every day.

I wouldn't mind something nicer and newer, but with the ammount of commuting I put in weekly, it would be just like throwing money out the window, with the drop in value.

had a saab, frickin thing was in the shop every other day....one day, said sooo long.  Moved on to a beat up toyota camry, just moved to city, figured no one would want to steal it, and i didn't care one bit anytime someone got their bumber a bit too close.  darn thing wouldn't die on me, never had it into the shop, had it for 2 years.....and finally traded it in for a grand total of $1.  It was real old (87) traded it in in 04, you guessed it toyota camry.  I take better care of this one, but you have to love a car that the body will start to fall apart before the inner workings:) I hate bringing my car into the shop.

Daily driver is a '99 Corvette convertible.  Magnetic red with light oak top.

Bad weather car is a '92 BMW 750 IL (V-12).  Not toooo bad on gas either

Wife's car is a '97 Sebring convertible which is her daily and our grocery gettin car, it also double's as a pick-up.  I've hauled two large screen tv's in it with the top down, and jr in the back seat holding it steady.  Talk about gettin some looks.  LOL

'97 Jag is the family load em up car.

'88 Ford T-bird turbo coupe is the project car.  Body in great shape and it runs.  Needs some tweaking though.  Never thought that little turbo charged 4 cyl would scream like it does.

My son that just got back from Iraq recently, bought a new Mazda speed 3, talk about a screamin turbo charged 4 cyl. WOW!

Well, someone could theorize that you might be too homely to get girls any other way!  ;)

Seriously tho, it tells me that you like a fast car. If I guess, I'd say that your are in your mid to late 20s and like a car that goes like hell and is good looking enough that you are quite content to just park it and let others admire it.

Cool, a car thread! Some fine rides here.

Roc, and Treize, I knew I liked you guys for a reason :)

Here's my old toy, a 66 Coupe 289/C4...currently undergoing a full undercarriage workover - disc brake conversion, full duals with X over pipe, 9" rear swap...

This is the car that I had for a few years and just traded in, a 02 GT 5 speed, stock save for a UPR shifter, chrome bullitt rims on Kumho tires & 3.73 gears..

And here's the new toy....an  07 GT convertible.

Strange, I drive Mustangs all the time, but rarely fly em online :)

Cool thread, nice to learn more about the AH community.

Savlan, Nice Ride!  Ya, I knew I liked you lol

Treize, I Love the pony package on the 06+ models.  Ive got the appearance package with the stripe on the lower rocker, and the wing.  I really like the pony fog lights Far better than the GT.

My old mustang was a 69 with a 302. I made the Horrible mistake of being a total newb moron and blew up my 69.  Long before I had a clue as to what I really had.

All I knew was it did 100mph without breathing hard.  Shame though, really, as I took the freeway offramp and down shifted.  Missed the 4 to 3 and hit 1.   Pistons came out the fenders.   Some times "That sucked" is about as big of an understatement as you can come up with.

*Edit*
BTW Sav, my wife says "Ya, Those Wheels!"

I have two rides a 2001 Bullitt Mustang #292 pretty much stock right now because I've been spending all my hotrod money on my truck. A 1991, 4x4, F350, that I put a 6BTA Cummins diesel in.

Neither one of them is practical but they are both a blast to drive in their own way.

This is the dream car. Now I just need to win the lotto.

Yeah, I prefer the Pony package grille myself, I took it over a used GT when I got it new last year. It was either the Pony, a used GT with over 30K already on the clock, or wait 3 months for a new GT. I took the Pony.

Now Im slowly turning into a reborn '69 Mach 1. :t

I was gonna go Boss 302 since its more tuned for handling than top speed, but I always wanted an old Mach, so it won out in the end.

Fun thread!

Read every post!

Wife drives 04 Durango...kid hauler.

I drive 04 HEMI Ram Quad cab. Cool air intake, magnaflow, superchip programmer.

Our sunday driver is a 79 Corvette L82 that my wife owned when we met.
It only has 47k miles now just replaced the carpet and had it chemical stripped and repainted it's original red.

In my single days I owned (one at a time) one of every Datsun/Nissan Z car ever made except the 260Z and the current 350Z.

Really diggin the new Mustangs but can't afford an additional ride and need my truck.

My true toy is my Hydra-sports 212 Center console with a Yamaha 150 Four Stroke.

Currently I drive a silver 2003 BMW 330xi
Previous cars in reverse order
2005 Mustang GT, black, 5speed (loved this car sooooo much)
2003 Saab 9-3 Aero convertible, charcoal (hated this car soooo much)
1997 Ford Explorer, white (meh)
2002 Nissan Frontier (major piece of S&$t)
1996 Ford Explorer, white (meh))
1984 Honda Civic
1967 Ford Mustang fastback with 351, beater, primer red.
1972 Buick Skylark
1980 Ford Fiesta

My wife's got an '07 Suburban we use to pull the boat and for road trips.  It's a freaking bus but comfortable as heck.

My current project is a 1973 MGB convertible, down to the bones in my garage getting primered (too hot to work on it right now).
Recent project sold last year was a 1973 Jensen Interceptor. Miss that beast.

Did you get the 5 speed manual or the automatic? I got the manual. It's a lot of fun most of the time but there are times I wish it were automatic. BTW, the true duals are on my scooter, not my car. I still have the single exhaust. The GT muffler livens the sound without being a pain in the ear and gives it a bit of a boost as well.

I got a 5 speed in the 07, and its just a lot more fun.

My 02 GT was my first stick car ( though I learned how to drive stick long ago on trucks for a job I did in my teens ).

Now when I drive an auto car -especially one thats performance oriented - I almost feel bored!  I love driving stick, you are just so much more involved and 'one' with the vehicle.

Im thinking of making the 66 a stick setup, but its a lot of work & cash, Ill probably just put a shift kit & manual valve body in it.

I'm really glad you are OK, but that doesn't look like a 50 mph impact to me. I would expect a 50mph impact utterly wreck a MK3 Fiesta.

Was it more of a glancing blow than a full on side-swipe?

Nah, that Fiesta is a safe car.   Ford implemented Safety Features from the higher priced Mondeo in the Fiesta.   I believe that that is a "Mark III" in the Generation of Fiestas.   Batfink's looks to have been a 1996 or 1997, before they went to the "Mark IV".

I'm just glad it was safe enough to allow me to duel him in the DA the other night.

These photos are from this winter. Since then I had a red pin stripe painted on from Godfathers Customs, I added an Eibach suspension, JBA headers and exhaust. A K&N air intake and a JET Powr-Flo Mass Air Sensor.

I was going to sell this car when the new Cameros come out but, now I am thinking I might keep this car and run it in some local SCCA club events.

yeah wooley, Karaya is right fords are very safe with side impact bars. without the safter features i would probably have lost my legs.

she started skidding at about 70mph and hit me a glancing blow as i was angled to turn left onto the road she was on.

The impact was such that my basesball cap flew off my head and out of the broken drivers window, onto the road.

The other factor that saved me serious injury was the fact that she was driving a 2006 model Nissan Micra.
you should have seen the mess her car was in, the front left headlights were smashed all the way back into the pasenger footwell, it was a stroke of luck that she was alone in the car.

she was treated for whiplash and seat belt bruise on her rips.

I was treated for glass in the arm and face, but my two passengers and my family dog were unharmed, something that i will always be thankfull for.

SWEET! My XRatty only has the Cosworth grille, but I am going to get the RS tail. I dont want the RS500 lower deck spoiler, I only want the upper, and I would like to put the Cossie hood vents.

What have you done to your engine? Mine has a SAAB radiator (identical size to the Cossie) so I can fit the small Cosworth intercooler, LA2 computer and large VAM, and a home made boost controller/bleed valve (18lbs) otherwise its stock.

Post by: AKDogg on July 21, 2007, 08:47:02 PM
I actually changed the motor from the Ford 2.3 turbo to the Cosworth 2.0 turbo.  She pushing 356hp at the wheels and 373ft/lbs of torque at 18lbs boost.  Now my engine can handle up to 500hp.  In order for me to get that, I have to increase my boost to about 22lbs which I don't want to do.  I want the car to last, lol.  If I use street tires on the drag she spins the tires through 3rd gear easily.  Car only weighs about 2600lbs if that.  Most of my parts for the car came from Rapido.

http://www.rapidogroup.com/

If u get the catalog from them, they do list the cosworth motor.  Thye do have alot of up grades for the 2.3 too.  Was tempted to build the 2.3 I have with the parts they offer and use it in another XR4TI.:t

If you have any interest in converting to the Cosworth AWD let me know and I will PM you contact info for a guy that builds XR4Ti ProRally cars using stuff imported from the UK. He has built several AWD XR's using Cosworth bits, builds copies of the Ford WRC suspensions, trans mounts, and tons of other stuff. He is very eccentric but can hook you up.

we almost bought a white shelby GT350 convertible over the weekend.  the sticker was $48530.  the dealer wanted $20k over sticker because the car is rare I offered $8K over but they wouldn't negotiate.  If it's still there next weekend I'll go in for round 2.

Hawco, it does use two turbos but isn't it a straight six? That wouldn't have separate banks of three.  I never heard of a BMW V-6. Not that it's not possible, I just never heard of it. Maybe I'm just behind the curve on the BMWness and havn't kept up with what they are doing now days. Would you check and let me know? Thanks. Beautiful car! :aok

Storch,

That would be sweet if they caved in a bit.  Out here in Sacramento, they don't budge, the leave the lot pretty fast.

Sweet car though.  So far, I like the Roush (sp) and the Shelby, something about the Saleen body kits that just make it look awkward.

I went by there and it's gone someone ponied up the $69K.  I don't like car payments so I didn't want to go over what I could pay.  I'm kind of kicking myself a bit though.

That thing is going to be worth a fortune in twenty years.

Not in 20 years Storch, you may get out what you put into it. In order for that car to be worth at least double what your paying for it today you'd have to seal it up into an airtight container and never drive it. But even then I wouldn't bet you it'd be worth double...

Stick your pile of cash in an index stock fund, based on an average of a 6% return on your initial investment of $48,000.00 over 20 years you'll earn $57,600.00...

Well Storch was sayin he was kickin himself thinking how much the car would be worth in 20 years. If you want the car to drive and enjoy you can't be thinking what you hope it'll be worth some time down the road. If the return in the long run is how much money you'll sell it for, just dump the funds into a safe bet vs an unknown.

And my little red "Godzuki", nearly as quick as the Mazdaspeed monster, and it handles better to boot.

Don't think that red is some kind of wussie color.. The guys at Ferrari would disagree.

I think they would appreciate in value even if you drove them.  what is a 1969 shelby going for these days?  $100-150K?  they were about $6k brand new.  what about an 80's IROC Z28?  even with rough usage they sell for about $15K a nice example for three times that.  what about a grand national?  I saw an original beauty for $35K at a show a while back.  garage kept yes undriven no.  If I bought one it would be out on nice weekend days.  it would still appreciate in value and adjust for inflation.  but like I typed I didn't want to part with the cash and I don't want car payments.

The New Shelby GT500's WILL APPRECIATE in value.   You are off of your rocker if you think otherwise.

As Storch said about older Shelby's.   He is probably on the high end of a 1969 by about $20,000-$30,000.    In mint condition ANY Registered Shelby (GT350 & GT500) from 1966-1968 will be anywhere from $75,000-$200,000 (or up for GT500KR's).    You do realize NEW, these same cars were $4,000-$6,000?   They MORE THAN DOUBLED within 10 years.

Shelby = Quality = Instant money maker.

As for "seal it up and never drive it", add at least $75,000 to most Shelby's if they were raced and still have the "livery".    Mileage IS NOT A FACTOR to most cases, yes, you will get more for a "less traveled vehicle", it is common sense.   But as most Muscle Car owners will tell you, "Why have them if you don't drive them?"    It is why many Shelby's, Cuda's, Vette's, Chargers, Challengers, etc have high miles, they are used for their intended purpose.

Hey Mark
Pulled this from their webiste, yeah it is a nice car, speeding ticket magnet though, I really watch what I'm doing when driving it as it takes off like a rocket, Mines is a 6 speed manual too, gives me more control etc, anyway, here's what I got for you:
Cheers Hawco
With 300 horsepower and class-leading 300 ft. lbs. of torque, the 335i Coupe is the most powerful 3 Series Coupe we’ve ever built, wrapped within the body of a beautiful machine. It features the world’s first inline six-cylinder engine with high precision injection and twin turbo chargers. It’s also remarkably fuel efficient, offering a major boost to engine power and a significant reduction of fuel consumption, at the same time. But even more impressive is that this engine marks a significant advancement in turbo technology. By using two small turbo chargers instead of one large one, our engineers eliminated the “turbo lag” other turbo engines are known for.
A little footnote to this, I've timed my 0-60 at about 4.8secs, bit faster than the 5.3 they claim, like I said earlier though. I don't like to really push it as knowing my luck, the CHP will be lurking around....

That's not even an M, is it? Bit surprised by the turbos- I don't recall seeing a turbo on any bimmer but an early 70s 320 (Ci designation, i think). They must only hire crazy engineers these days.

My old roommate had an 88 M3, and the 320 before that. His father had a mid 80ish M6, a 2002, and a couple of donor cars for parts.  Man those were some fantastic cars to drive. I would kill a busful of nuns to get my hands on a newer M5.

I'm suddenly not in love with my Cherokee anymore. :cry

Well I had two speeding tickets in roughly 43 years of driving and I've been pulled over twice since I bought the Mustang last year. Got a ticket on the first one and a warning on the second one. It may be a situation where I've been more of a lead foot in this car than the pickups I always drove before.

Commute up this morning, Golf V something in front, straight part of the road ahead, had a look ahead and my foot was slipping into lead mode, quick look behind me and there it was, the white unmarked watching, lead foot goes away and saved myself  the hassle of a ticket etc, funny enough, he ended up going past the boths of us shorlty after, probably had bigger fish to fry elsewhere.

I throw the tire-wet on mine a few times a year, but I'm going to need new tires soon, so I don't worry about it too much. Like the man says, a light coat is all it takes. Any more than that is useless, it gets so sticky that it grabs bugs and dust for days.

A big problem with me, working the night shift, is bug splatters. I found stuff that gets 'em off well, but it also contains a wax, which looks weird if you just use it to get a couple but splats off without washing and waxing the whole car.

But the stick-on tinting on the headlights makes it easy to keep them clean at least. :)

:D  i should have been more clear, the bullit wheels will look great. i won't own anything but black wheels from here on out.

i use to own a set of billet wheels on a droped truck i had, looked great but to much work to keep looking like a mirror. black just hit with some water and a towel

Yeah, even without the extra work, I wouldn't want Billets for the simple fact that every Honda Civic with a fartcan and a do-it-yourself window tint kit (aka- a "Rolling Speaker") has giant chrome rims. I'm so sick of seeing chrome anymore....

thats funny cause everyone use to call my Z/28 the J-spec Camaro because of the black wheels. those were the first to sport the black, grey gunmetal wheels down here.

I have a 2007 1/2 ton Chevy Silverado XLT Crew cab.

Leather interior
Dual climate control
Navigation System
Bose speakers
XM radio
Back up sensors
bed liner
DVD player
Onstar
Etc etc

Most comfortable ride I have ever had in a Pick up. Sure beats the 97 Ford F150 I had before that. Now if they will just do something about the ridiculous gas prices!!!!   :cry

then i blew it up. i guess 18psi of boost is a little too much for a 140k mile, stock mitsubishi motor.  i ran it like i stole it for about a year. everyone said it was possesed because it wouldn't die. i want another one.

Beyond plain stupidity, I cannot understand why  one would run that motor on 18 psi.

a six-bolt, first gen 4G63-T can handle up to 20 psi with low miles. mine had a lot of miles. it also lasted a long time at 18psi.

Oh, BTW, I bought one of these about 3 months ago. I'm really happy with it. Not quite as good gas mileage as my Civic, but much more comfortable and has a much better stereo.

I had to rebuild the transmission...Twice. Replaced all the Whitworth philips head hardware with socket head screws. Made my own gaskets for the tranny side covers... That cured the leaks.

I kept that bike for 9 years, selling it in 1980, I think.

My favorite was the RD400 Yamaha. I bought it from Suzuki of Jacksonville (also a Yamaha dealer) in April of 1979. It was a 1977 leftover. The engine was pulled within a week and went through extensive modification. Over-bored, new pistons, radical porting, racing reed valves, polished exhaust ports, gaskets matched to ports, decked heads, larger smoothbore Mikunis, custom tuned expansion chambers, K&N filters and a competition clutch. Power went from the stock 44 hp to 72 hp. The power curve was steep and violent.

The original tires were replaced with high-end Dunlops. The cast aluminum wheels were powder coated to match the red fuel tank and side covers. Front and rear disks were cross-drilled for cooling and better bite in the wet. a set of clubman bars and a quarter fairing, along with a re-contoured saddle and rear-sets finished the bike.

Performance was simply frightening. I recently had the opportunity to ride a friend's 2006 Suzuki GSXR600. That old Yamaha was much faster, but the Suzuki was easier and far less scary to ride quickly as modern suspensions are vastly better (as are the tires). Still, in a straight line, that RD400 would easily run away from the much heavier Suzuki, once you could get the front wheel down on the pavement....

I sold that little monster some time ago.. I actually refused to sell it a teenager, who came with his father to see it. He simply lacked the experience and judgment to own a bike with a power to weight ratio of well under 4 lb per hp. Definitely not a machine for a low-time rider. Especially with a power curve that transformed the throttle into little more than an on-off switch.

I miss the charm of that old beastie, but I don't miss the absolute terror it generated when powering off an apex and having the front wheel lift at 90 mph.. It would leave one's rectum so tight that you would be crapping ribbon for a week.

My regards,

Widewing

AAAHHHHHH!  I've got one of those.  It's the biggest PoS I've ever owned.  I just finished changing the water pump.  It only took 4 days.  4 days!  Who designed that thing?  It runs well with 110k miles (when it's running), but when it breaks....it's hell.  BTW, it breaks a lot.

Heh, yeah, 2-strokes could at times be a tad too thrilling. Unexpected loft is usually only fun upon reflection, eh? :)

I owned a 750 trip Kaw for a while. It was ungodly quick through the gears, but nowhere near as prone to wheelies as some of their 350's and 500's I'd ridden in the past. I think that was due to a longer swingarm. One way or another, it had the snap of a 2-stroke on the band without the fear it would come out from under you. I used to really piss off friends who were riding 1000cc-class 4-strokes when we'd bellybutton around stoplight to stoplight :)

Coolest bike I ever rode was a 750 Honda. A friend was in LA when they first arrived. He paid for one sight unseen, in advance. Many years later he asked me to tune it up. I was amazed looking at the numbers on it - frame # 00010, engine casting # 0008. Nice piece of nostalgia.

I sold my last motorcycle about 15 years ago. I've been getting the urge lately to get another one, but at my age I need that like another hole in my head.

Since folks are still posting in here (and I want to show it off a bit), I just put in a rear seat delete kit on my '06 Pony.

From start to finish, including rummaging for tools (had a hell of time finding the right sized sockets), took less than an hour. I was amazed at how easy the seat came out. The lower part came right out without any tools at all, and the backs came out with just a few bolts removed.

My daily ride is a 2006 Volvo V70 tdi, chiptuned it gets to 182 hp, hits almost 220 km/h and in regular use it does 18 km on a liter diesel. Some consider it as a tank, but have to commute 270 km daily,  doing over 80.000 km a year and my fantasy is that my tank is giving me a bit of protection and safety.
Been a Volvo-fan for many years now. Had 2x 240's from which one was a 240 turbo (awsome ride), a 740gle, a 940gl, 850glt, and V70-classic.
I think I stick to it :lol .

Quite a thread Widewing :-) Wonder how many perks ;)

30mpg at 70mph
24mpg back an forth to work
tire pressure readout on the dash on command (sheesh)
240 watts per channel (stock!)

Next up: decent exhaust followed by 10" converter, 3:73 gears,
..then a deep breath, and into 427 territory, followed by a supercharger.

Should be fun :)

To be honest I dont like that green monster much at all. My volunteer dept bought it to use as a tanker ( was not my idea) It belongs on an airport not country roads. So now its for sale.

Nice looking Lance you have there. I like the paint scheme. Not a fan of those blue lights though.:D  I'll try to get a pic my rigs at work posted for you.

Ahhahah, yes, it is.

Some people use their Monaros to tow their boats.

I'd agree with the towing thing.... wrong car for it. It is my father's car, though, so it doesn't worry me.

I drive an 06 jeep wrangler with a 4 inch teraflex long arm lift,33 inch bfgmt's ,winch, sye kit, 456 gears, and various other mods that let me take it places to get it dirty. I usually fly a mustang in game but only really run when grossly outnumbered, have a bit of damage, or realize I got low slow stupid and need to restock  some e.

When my mate landed in his KR that weekend he handed me his tent as he unpacked his plane and said "check that out, it only weighs 2.5kg!"
I smiled and replied, "Once you get set up come check mine out,it only weighs 900!"

'..race..' a motorcycle?

150mph roll?

ok ok .. first one to pass 185mph?

Ok ok .. something easier, howbout a turn?
umm ..not as fast as a Z-51 Vette on decent tires ..go ahead ..ask me how I know.. I dare ya.
(already had a clown on a bike tailgate me into a hard right going onto a freeway onramp ..he was gonna 'show me' ..
..he ate the gaurdrail from draggin a peg as I kicked the back end out, fed throttle, and apexed the corner at well above any speed he could manage to turn at)

Hmm .. well ok, howbout 60mph to 0? Shortest distance?

Well shoot .. just what does your bike do well at?

Oh ya .. I hear they are great at runnin by Honda Civics .. really .. cool .. wtg :)

AC set to 72, stereo crankin rock an roll, smilin at alla bikers eatin bugs, knowin they wont ever see the other side of 150mph.

LOL Gixer.
I still miss my motorcycles.
I don't have any pics unfortunately (I'd ask the ex for some if I could ever get hold of her)
My favourite was a GS1000 frame braced by Snow Ardill in SA, Wiseco 100 kit forged pistone T4 turbocharger and fuel injection by a company who became SDS via Ford/Mazda injectors. GSX1100 alloy swingarm, triple trees and front shocks, NSR250 wheels and brakes.
When we went for rides, everyone would leave me for dead off the line, but by the time I'd be shifting into 2nd I'd be passing them :lol The boost just about tore your arms out  200KPH in 3rd, I really don't know exactly how fast as I'd run out of speedo at 220 KPH :P
This is what I'm working on :D

"Gas mileage" and "turbo" dont go together, regardless of displacement or number of cylinders.  ;)

I know it will hurt the mileage, but not as bad as a V8...  a V6 would n nice, but redoing the drivetrain is a bit beyond me.

<S>...-Gixer

Rode Motocross in 125 then 250 class for several years in and around Phoenix back in '70-'72 ..usually placed in top 25 percent at the finish if some noob didnt just plain ol run into me on turn one.

-shrug- ..had a '76 Z Kawasaki geared, cammed, header, Vance and Hines toys on it.. ran ok, both pedals scuffed up from cornering as fast as it would go..useda love pullin some wannabe's chain on Hiway 2 tween I-5 and I-15, ..but hey .. you just keep on keepin on.
My Duster would blow it away in 1/4 mile.. and did after I sold the bike and raced him -evil grin-

I prefer a 'car' (specifically my Z-51 Vette) because it won't kill you to hit a single gravel rock in a corner, I can go faster into and out of said corner, I can go past 150mph without worrying about being killed by a bumble bee. .. among other things.

And yes .. I could turbo it, methane inject it, and run just a bit faster than <insert any similarly equipped bike> here -very evil grin-

My '94 Eunos Roadster, I bought it for my 50th a couple of years ago, just wanted something fun, cheap and economical for hacking round the countryside.

Thinking about putting a supercharger on, just need to work out how to do it without the Mrs noticing.

Holy crap Chappy.  What does that thing do ina quarter mile? Low 10's or did you break into the 9's.  With that nitrous you must be pushing 700hp.

10.3 @ 147MPH  on 93 octane pump gas no nitros in 1/4 mile.
With such a high lift cam barely runs on 93 with out knocking in high RPM.
prolly getting 9:1 ,9.3:1 on 93 octane. Proly get 10.5:1 on 116

Was my first pass. Was going to put 116 octane in and run with nitros, but
without a  rollcage they wouldnt let me run again. :frown:

Gets about 3-4 miles a gallon. Been building it for last 4 years. Just got to find good painter then its done.

Trying to get picks up of it. soon i hope

Holy crap, bet that thing would run low 9's.  We have an 81 camaro me my kid are going to start building.  Needs a lot of work though.  Going to aim for about 425hp from a 350, maybe nitrous later.  Right now, it just sits.  $$$$.  He wants to put a T10 with 3.73 rearend in it.  I'm still trying to talk him into the transmission you have.  That would beat you up going down the highway, @3000rpm at 60mph with a T10.

Thats definitely a beast you have. Sounds like a sweet ride.

Use to have t-400 trans in it, but being such low gears with a big block, was 3,500 rpm doing 65mph. Might be alright for small block. On my big block I was roasting 7 and 8 rod bearings quick, plus the gas feeding it.
So I decided to go with the 700R-4. Has the lowest 1st gear of any trans, plus it has overdrive. So now i run about 2600rpm @ 75 mph with the stall locked up in 4th gear, which is a alot better.700r-4 needs to be built to handle high HP, can get expensive.

If you are building 350 might wanna think about stroking it 383ci. 383 are real good nitros motors. If you gonna drive it on the street you got to have a overdrive trans. If not you will be changing bearings all the time cause you will burn them up holding high rpm.

The best thing I did besides using the 700r4, was making it full roller motor.
It is the only way to go if you are going to be racing, but can get expensive also.

A well built auto trans will roast a manual trans in a heartbeat, due to no shift time and no power loss with right stall.

Thanks for the info Chappy.  Just more ammunition for the 700. I think BowTie Trans has some that will work for us for about 12-1300.  Not really interesting in racing it, just an occasional run at the drag strip.

my understanding was that these ate vettes for lunch too?

when i used to street race(way back when i was dumb enough to do that in philly)  i found the trick to beating the GN's was to get the guy pissed off...then he'd run ya when he was still hot.....and that seemed to kill their power considerably.  BTW, if any of you are looking, i have a good friend here in south jersey selling one....it needs body work though......and it ran 10.70;s.....

Now, the car in the background (and no, not my kid's little orange thing) is a 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix (junker) with a Pontiac 400 engine we extracted. Remember "Smokey?"

Roundeye - Cap1

That one is an 84 T-Type I bought new - the pic is after resto 4 years ago. Has about 150k miles and is a great cruiser/highway car but not particularly fast (faster than most tho)

The project took so long that I bought an 87 T for a driver - that's the one that would eat vettes and most everything else. Fastest car built in US in 87 - or so they say.

The intake manifolds were different on the 86 and 87's allowing better breathing = more power. Little bigger turbo and the intercooler as well. My 87 (bigger injectors and etc.) will do 0-60 in about 4.5.. It is apart in my garage getting a clean-up now (been about a year and a half) I gotta be careful with it - at WOT it's pretty close to detonation...

The guy who did the paint on the 84 built one that wound up with over 800 rear wheel h.p. (142 in the quarter) There is one in Springfield, MA w/around 1000 rwhp - and it's street legal

At one point, my son and I had four of these - now we only have three (2 84's and the 87)

Appreciate your interest...

like i said in an earlier post... i like the V8 rumble...and i like to make my horsepower without power adders......but i've always loved the looks of these cars. put it in the street in front of your house, walk about 30 feet away, and turn round and look at it...it kinda just says "get the hell outta my way NOW" :D   almost looks like they're doing 80 just sitting there. for all the good looking cars they're building today though, they'll never match classic styling like the GN's, old mustangs, cudas, cutlass's etc........... :aok

03 Mach 1
(4:10's, 31 Spline Axles, Auburn Pro Diff, SLP's, otherwise stock 4.6 DOHC and runs about 12.7-13.1) Really is my wifes sunny day car/summer car. We have had it since new about 5 years and it has almost 9,000 miles. Its mostly fun for her and although we are older (40's) we enjoy going out beating up ricers with it.

84 20th Anny Mustangs
(Restored to Stock but many hidden-mods 3.73 8.8 Rear Upgrade, Full Maximum Motorsports Suspesnion, hidden true duals, Full MSD Ignition, X-303 cam,GT-40X heads, etc good strong mildly built carb'd 5.0) I love this car and will be buried with it. I was in high school when these 20th anny's came out but was not able to buy my first new fox until 86.

I usually dont run it with the Metric 390mm TRX Tires but, these Nitto's on White Pony Wheels. I keep the OEM Michelin 390mm wheels and tires off until I go to Ford shows.

Project Cars:

I also have one of the 6 Known 84 Anny cars with Turbo 2.3 and T-Top that Ford Built. It is a very long term project and is heavily rusted.

I realized when I hit 5 mid-80's fox body Mustangs I had a problem so scaled back just to the 84 Anny Cars!

I also Restore old British Bikes (although thats somewhat on the back burner right now)

This is a pic of my 68 and 01 Triumph Bonneville's:

This is a better pic of the 01 (its really more my wifes bike, as I cant ever see her priming the Amals and speaking nicley to Lucas a.k.a prince of Darkness electronics):

like i said in an earlier post... i like the V8 rumble...and i like to make my horsepower without power adders......but i've always loved the looks of these cars. put it in the street in front of your house, walk about 30 feet away, and turn round and look at it...it kinda just says "get the hell outta my way NOW" :D   almost looks like they're doing 80 just sitting there. for all the good looking cars they're building today though, they'll never match classic styling like the GN's, old mustangs, cudas, cutlass's etc........... :aok
<<S>>

The '87 Grand National GNX was the 2nd fastest production car you could buy in the US in the '80s.  (911 Turbo was faster) from what I have read.  Yes, even the mighty Corvette would quickly see the tail lights of a GN if it tried to run it.  All this from a 3.8 litre V6.  I LOVE turbos.  With standard atmospheric conditions, every 14.7psi of boost made, effective displacement doubles.  I was running 15lbs which effectivelymade that little 231 cu in (3.8 litre) engine into a 462 cu in (7.6 litre).

V8 rumble is neat to listen to, but so is the hiss of a turbo.  Thats what makes those turbo Buicks so damn deadly.....they are quiet and unassuming.  The seriously de-rated (insurance reasons) specs for the '87 GN is 300hp, 400 ft lbs tq  :rock .  Many poor fools mistake a GN for a Monte SS with embarrasing results, those who know what they are proceed with caution.  Those that don't know what they are remember them later, I can assure you.

I sold mine while I still had points left on my license.

Research www.turbobuick.com and www.turbobuicks.com for info.  Check out the GN doing the 1/4 in 8.31 @ 167mph  :O

Either a 1984 toyota pickup extended cab 4x4 (with a camper shell)

or

a 1982 toyota pickup longbed 4x4 (that needs lots of work! but still runs great!)

Although my sons ZOOOKI samurai was fun building/rebuilding.........

Looks like a 1972 or thereabouts. I've had many Brit roadsters, including several Sprites/Midgets, a 1968 MGB that I never got on the road (bought and sold without a dime spent in between.. Needed a lot of work) and a '69 Spitfire for club racing. Always labor intensive and always fun. Worth every hour.. Just go aftermarket for ignition.

These days I have a low mileage Honda S2000 in the garage and I've been thinking about a Solstice GXP or Sky Redline for a daily ride... We always have my wife's sedan for family outings with grandkid...

My regards,

Widewing

It's always fun (sad?) to list all the cars you've owned. I've prolly had more than my fare share

66 Malibu
70 fiat 124 coupe
3x fiat 124 spyders (various years)
67 camaro SS/RS
70 monte carlo
80 fiat X 1/9

73 camaro split bumper coupe  (454 car SUPER WHOOSH)
75 corvette
85 corvette
66 malibu station wagon
55 chevy pickup
73 mustang
66 rambler america
Subaru brat
late 70s Monza with a vette 350 VROOM
66 Fiat OSCA
78 trans am
79 trans am
88 Jaguar XJS
78 fiat 124 (?) coupe

80 something 280ZX
68 skylark convertable

Current stable:

08 suburban
07 Chrysler 300

I simply just don't know what I was thinking when I sold some of them. The 67 Camaro was a 4 speed car. The 66 chevelle was a car my mom bought brand new. I inherited it in 82. Sold it when I went to school.

Truly an awesome machine.  Does everything at 90%.  Show, go and whoa - all with four usable seats.

And that engine... I havent driven the new V8 yet, but I think the S54 is the finest straight six to have ever been bolted to motor mounts.

Simply superb power plant.

Run of the mill Dodge Durango...  V8 and towing package for getting the boat to the lake.

I do however have a 1974 Fiat 124 Spyder (would smoke all your pansy arnold MGs  :D) tucked away in storage leftover from my college years.  Hoping to restore it as soon as I can find the time...

LT-1 350; Air Research 2.02" alum heads, 3 stage injection, Hypertech superchip <programmable>, TH700 automatic, 4:10 limited slip rearend. Bought it in '96 with 15k miles on it,  used to be a high 12second car with street tires on it. Used to have a blast pickin on riceburners with it :D. Drove it daily to work etc until a few years ago when gas + insurance got too spendy, it in garage now with about 100k on it. plannin to restore it eventually.

2005 Mustang GT Convertible  (daily driver)

1971 Ford F-250 long-bed pick-up (restored)

1992 Ford Bronco XLT 4x4  (wife's car)

1979 Datsun 280ZX (restored)

I have an itch to buy a 2008 Ford Expedition 4x4 (King Ranch Model).  I'm a bit tired of no room for anything in the Mustang and getting in and out of it.  The Mustang is a quick little bugger though with 300HP.

A more recent pic after Flayd and I stuffed a rebuilt tranny into his red '79 Trans Am last weekend. First time in years he's been able to drive it back to his place under it's own power. Body and interior are in the rough, but overall they are mechanically sound.

My regards,

Widewing

It's a 73. But I have a 67 motor for it.  Also used to have a 73 Jensen Interceptor, sold it to a guy in Holland.

Come on Betty, at most you should be giving these is 500 watts RMS even then for this model it might be too high.  They are rate4 at 400 RMS a piece, 1000 to each would blow them before the first bass note dropped.

Dont get me wrong I love the setup, I am a huge fan of Kicker my self.

Was too lazy to go out at 11:15 at night and started taking pictures....
2007 Honda Accord EX w/v6 and completely loaded....  My wife drove her 95 Saturn into the ground..  I figured she deserved something especially nice for herself...
Not to mention something uber safe for the kids to ride in..

Again, this is not the actual car as mine as different style rims and is a 93 with the VR6..  210,000 original mile and still drives like the day I got it...

Once again, not the actual pic.  This is the Vespa GTS 300 Super...  Does over 80mph..  Pops wheelies off the line if I'm not careful..  It's bigger than it looks...
It's a 280CC bored/stroked 4 stroke 4 valve engine..  Get's about 60-70 miles to a gallon if I don't hot rod it..  Got it last year, drove in the winter if there was no snow and ice..
Just plain fun to ride..  This scooter isn't supposed to be available in the US, but the scooter shop I deal with had 4 of them..  I traded in my old PX200 and got this...
Here's a 2nd pic with someone on it for comparison..

A 2007 Mazdaspeed 6. It's like a WRX for grownups, with the added feature of not screaming "Give me a ticket!" to every cop on the road. 274 HP, 280 FP, all wheel drive, governor-limited to 149 mph.  :rock

I love this baby, it's the most fun car I've ever owned. Smooth and sedate on the commute, a demon when you open up. I frequently take the back roads home from work because driving on them is so much fun.

Mine has a front end cover and a back end cover as well.

I'm more into utility than beauty, same reason I fly a 38 in AH.

Come on Betty, at most you should be giving these is 500 watts RMS even then for this model it might be too high.  They are rate4 at 400 RMS a piece, 1000 to each would blow them before the first bass note dropped.

Dont get me wrong I love the setup, I am a huge fan of Kicker my self.

wow i just now see this post hehe...there was a typo in there...my amp is 1000 watt, the speakers are 500 watt each...i bought my system at a great car stereo dealer.........

SD67, I restored 5 Honda CB160's one year 1 of each color....A guy had this  purple CB350  and wanted just 250.00 for it saying It hadn't been run for over 20 years...I didn't even need to put carb kits in it to get it running!

When we get tired of sitting home, we load this baby up and hit the road for a month or two...7 MPG (Cat C-7 diesel) going down hill with a tail wind, but it's worth it.

Well, it doesn't exactly "come with it's own car". Most people either have a car (once hooked onto the RV it's called a towed) or purchase one.  Kinda difficult running down to the local store with the "bus". :)
