my brother works for a cell phone company and found that some parents like to take a step outside and throw the phone into the highway, problem solved.

take his/hers phone away?
I never had one when I was a kid. I really does not deprive you of anything. The kid needs home to stay in and the parents to talk to. Your home will shape him/her not the "friends'

when my mom was a teacher for kids who got expelled from public schools, when she caught a kid texting in class (even HAVING a phone could mean time in juvie due to the fact they could call in fellow gangmembers) she would sometimes take the kid's phone hold it in front of him/her and snap it in half and hand it back

Throw their phone into the highway when they're watching. That should tell them.

Beat me to it! :lol

I still do not fully understand the concept of using a phone to text message someone.
-
kids are kids. You make them you raise them. They'll do what you teach them.
Your fault.

discreet communication.
text is used when you try to contact someone who is in a meeting or attending church. You don't want phones ringing in these occasions.
-
and don't try to tell me "but their friends have cell phones". Talk to their friends' parents and will tell you the same.
Grow a pair. Kids are what you make them. They are watching you every second and trust me they do remember.
-
Make them pay for the phone service out of their own bank account. Teach them the value of money, make them earn what they want to spend.
Worked like a champ for me. My parents didn't have any money to spend on luxuries like cars and video games for us kids as we grew up, so if we wanted them we had to earn the money ourselves. It taught us an awful lot about life and how to not grow up to be professional victims like most of the US today.
If they want their phones, get them a bank account and have them open up their own cellphone accounts. Then add back incentives - for each "A" they get, drop $10/month into their account for the semester, A "B" gets $5, a "C" gets $2, a "D" or "F" gets nothing. Add in an overall GPA bonus. Or make the amounts whatever you think their schoolwork is worth. The point is that they get rewarded for WORK, not for whining about what every other kid has.
If they don't bother to put in work towards grades, they'll need to do work in other ways. The whole point of cash rewards for school grades is so they don't have to balance a job against schoolwork. They can get money by either blowing off school and getting a job, or by not getting a job and focusing on school. Either way, they get their $$$.
If they're just not very smart, then maybe enrolling in a vocational school would be best and skills acquisition like completing a certification course would earn them their reward.
The point is that they can get all the toys all the other kids have, but it sure as hell won't be free because nothing in life is free.
-
If I was driving down the highway and somebody threw a cellphone at my car I'd be mighty pissed. Perhaps pissed off enough to get off the highway and pay that person a visit.
-
hand them the bill, take the phone, let them have a pay as you go phone when they can afford to buy it themselves.
-

That would not be a good idea as there might be a emergency or something happen at the school where the kid needs the parent to bring them something or kid needs to inform the parent that they are staying after school for a school function
Best option would be taking text messages off their cell plans

What do you think kids did in the same situation, oh lets say 10 years ago?

Oh! That's good, that someone shouldn't be paying attention to that meeting or church anyway!
-
Have you disabled texting? All that does is not let the person send/receive the messages...
I've got an enV with unlimited text/pic/video messaging, so I don't really know the experience.
-
I don't know how people ever survived the last 20,000 years.

Oh! Oh! I know! I mean I was only in High School 3 years ago but I know what we did without Cell-phones!
We used the Teacher's phone. Or we went to the office and used the office phone. Or we had a friend call our parents when they got home.
Or failing that... we talked to the school/teachers/other students and got the schedules for school events and... posted them on the calendar at home so the parents knew what we were doing.
Responsibility... its a bugger ain't it?

I'm a teacher. At least once a week a student needs to go to the office to call home; I always let them. Kids really don't need cell phones. I don't even need a cell phone. Parents always justify buying their kids cell phones because there might be an emergency. Kids use them, but it's never an emergency. Besides, their friends always have a phone that they can borrow.
-
the best bay is to disable the text by making them pay for it they problaly will stop or/and get mad at you thats what my dad did although i never got text

cmon you old people are lame!!!!
its just one thing you cant figure out. nothing bad about texting at all.
texting makes the conversation span out and you can do other things while not having to carry a phone in your ear. just let her/him do it, it cant hurt her.
and kids do need cell phones!!!! when you want to call your kid to come home then you simply call them. if you didnt have anyway to reach your child at 11pm you would get a lil scared. or if they get in a car crash they need to have some thing to reach you. its better for your kid to have a cell then not have 1. trust me on this!

Just because they exist kids NEED to have them?
A kid no more needs a cell phone than you need a hole in your head.
The points you bring up are good ones but they don't mean that kids need to have cell phones.

Get him one of these.....

He wont dare break it out of his backpack to text on it, even IF it worked.

Who do you have for your cell provider?
You may be able to call them up and have them totally disable texting for that number
-
I'm not sure how we're going to do it, Sarah and I haven' discussed the idea yet, but I'm in favour of awarding Brianna her allowance based on her home and school performance. When she wants a Mobile phone, she can pay for it herself. We may get one for her as a birthday or Christmas present, but she covers her own costs :aok
-
I got through High School without ever sending a text message. I'm not old either, I just graduated last year.
The idea that kids need them is total BS. They are nice to have, but that doesnt mean they NEED them.
90% of the text messages I have seen sent were between students during class. That is why 91% of students can fail a test, because they are texting the whole darn day.
If you have a girl then you are even worse off. They go nuts with the texting. My younger, she's 12, managed to rack up a $700+ bill JUST with texting.
Personally I feel that most cases that people use text they either should not be communicating anyway (particuarly those who text and drive), or they should get off their butt and go talk to the person.
Make them pay the bill or just take away the phone.

<-- head of IT at my company, hence head of anything "technological" IE phones....
your kid??
tomorrow I will post my dilemma and show you a headache.

What certificates do you hold?

I'm with others, take it away. I blew through about $80 one month because of texting and I paid every cent of that back to my parents. Guess what, I don't text anymore! Oh and the fact it takes me an hour to type anything, just freaking call me. It's bad enough we have to use phones to communicate, let's make it even more impersonal and send little messages.

I’d like to point out the quality of writing of these four youngsters. Note how the pro texters write versus the non-texters.

I have the feeling when we have a major EMP hit the States, a lot of younger people are going to commit suicide because they'll think their life is over.

just beat the crap out of him/her and say next time he/she uses tech for keeping contact with friends you're going to kill him/her.

This old guy knows how to text, I just choose not to. If someone needs to talk to me, call and talk to me.
Kids do NOT need cell phones. I never had one when I was growing up. If my parents needed to call me to come home they called over to my friends house where I was at. If I wasn't were I told them I was going to be then I had some explaining to do. Also if a kid gets in a car crash, the police will contact the parents. It goes along with the job description.
I will NEVER give my kids cell phones. When they are old enough and they want one, well they better get a job and be able to pay for it themselves. Too many kids today feel they are entitled to all the modern marvels of todays society. I was brought up on the principle that you have to earn what you get. There will never be any freebies with my kids. They might think I'm an SOB now but in the long run they'll understand why. I know I have more respect for my parents now that I'm one myself. I figure it's not my job to be my kids buddy or best friend. It's my job to be their dad, and if that means I have to smack them in the back of the head every now and then to get their attention, or be the bad guy by telling them no when they want something, well that's just a part of the job.
Back on track with the thread though, if you feel your kid must have a cell phone, change the calling plan to only allow voice calls and even then I woud limit the number of minutes. If they go over the minutes the phone cuts off. On that note you also tell them that if you ever try to call them and can't get through because they've used up all their minutes that month on BS phone calls, your going to throw the thing in the trash. Make your kid responsable for their actions and hold them to it. The best lessons learned in life usually involve a little pain, so hit em where it hurts.
-
Had the same problem with my Daughter....
then she gets to pay the phone bill... after the first one for €128 the problem stopped.
-
I would suggest that you tell the kid to refrain from doing so.
If that doesn`t work you might want to look somewhere else for the problem. It isn`t the kid.

What is wrong with kids today? When I was around 12 or 13(this may be a bit old for this poster), I would have HATED being stuck with a phone, we wouldnt have ever done half the fun toejam we did, if our parents could track us down. Hell at that age your not supposed to really want to be around your parents much.
I can not imagine, having a phone and having to clear every little thing with my parents, that would have been hell.
Kids nowadays seem like a bunch of little mommas boys.

just beat the crap out of him/her and say next time he/she uses tech for keeping contact with friends you're going to kill him/her.
Of course that'll make your child text the police and have you arrested, but hey---
We got one big texting bill on my daughter's phone so we switched to a plan that has unlimited texting. Problem solved.
-
I agree, texting really isn't necessary. I receive text messages, but when I get them I just call the person back. I don't really like using my TALKING DEVICE to type on, that's what email is for.
-
Texting is similar to drawing pictures on a TV screen.

I'll bet my house that UNLIMITED DATA will be next to your plan because kids will be downloading songs/games on a phone :D

Quick!
Someone buzz back in time and meet Moses just before he comes down from Mt. Sinai and have him chizel another commandment in the tablets!!
"11) Thou Shalt Not Cell Phone Text in the Church, Temple, or Tabernacle"

Check this out, when kids asks (or beg) for UNLIMITED DATA, they're doing it for this :devil

Gunthr what cell company do you use?
Actually, I have a Kajeet phone for my kid, so its easy to make the phone unusable during any time period of any day in half hour increments or whole days, and to block anybody you don't want them talking to, and you can see the activity online anytime. I'm just amazed how strongly and quickly these kids take to it....
-
get'em the jitterbug cell for old people, 3 buttons.
-
I don't see what the problem is.
Was it the bill?
or him shirking responsabilities because of texting or what?
not sure what 'going crazy' with texting means realistically.
-
She is 13 years old. If I let her, she will pretty much text back and forth all day long with her friends even while she is doing something else at the same time. It seems like a bit much to me.
I do have her phone configured so she can only call 911 or her parents and grandma during school hours. When she gets out of school, the phone comes back on until bedtime at 830 pm, then goes off until 730AM. Then it comes back on until 900AM when the school bell rings and stay off until school is over. Then it goes on again until 830pm.
She's on spring break right now, so I lifted the time constraints. (she has unlimited texting right now.) Since this morning, she logged 263 incoming and outgoing text messages until she went to bed at 10pm. It worries me a little... wondering if this is addictive behavior or something. She's a good kid, no other problems, but I was just wondering about this.
-
Crap that's over 14 messages an hour!
Yeah I can see how that could be seen as being a bit much. hopefully her fingers will get sore and she will ease up on it a bit.
-
My little sister ran the phone bill up $1200 with texting one month. Funny thing is we found out that most of the texting was done after 7PM when calls are free. She didnt like what happened after that.
-
This sounds like an addiction/obsession to me. It’s pretty normal for teenage girls to be obsessed with their peers, boys and socializing. Non-stop texting does sound a bit disturbing, however. Limiting texting at school and night is smart, unless she knows how to get around it. I’d check the bill/records to make sure. The fact that it bothers you is enough to do something about it.
If a child shows addictive or obsessive behavior towards anything (watching TV, using the computer, playing D & D or talking on the phone) it’s probably wise to impose further limits. One problem with this generation is they have so many distractions they are not learning how to devote their complete attention to one conversation. Even adults now will break a conversation with the people that they are with in real life (in their car, restaurant, etc.) to talk on the phone.
How often does she play visit her girlfriends? She’d be better off visiting them face to face in my opinion.
-
As the Parent YOU make the rules.
Like I tell my kids.
"This family is NOT a democracy. Its a dictatorship. And you aint the dictator"
An option you can take is let them pay their own bill under their own account.
Let them be solely responcable for their cell phone bill and DONT help them monitarily with it.
When they are faced witht eh choice of texting or having money.
they will get the idea
-
now something i can help with :D :rock :D something that would stop me is takeing away my cell if i text like over some type of limit srry bad a spelling but give a limite then if he/she/grub goes over that limit make them pay the amount of money that is over it.
-
Get a flat rate connection with unlimited text messages. Problem solved.
-
My co-worker was telling me how his son racks up over 200 messages in a week.
Another co-worker has her parents on her account and got billed for 'spam' text messages. ( $.20/message )
The next day I called Verizon and had texting completely blocked.
No need for it. None.
-
Hmm... The only reason I use texting is that I dont have a good signal here. So I just use texting, or I use the house phone.
If I were you, I would get unlimited texting and make them pay for it.
-
#1 don't give a phone unless it is needed.
#2 don't turn on the text messaging.
#3 only give them something like 20 minutes a month in a prepaid phone that cuts off after that time is up.
#4 Don't give them a phone.

That's what happens when you give a kid a cellphone. They never use grammar or proper spelling, and refer to "txt tlk" instead. When I text, I take my time to use proper spelling and grammar. If you quote this post when in Firefox, you'll notice the only red lines I have are under "txt" and "tlk". :D
PS: I am 14, for those who don't know.
-
None of my kids have an interest in texting (yet). I toss a cell phone to the kids when they go out bike riding ~ so I can remind them that they're late coming home (again!). My phone contract is near it's expiration. I'm considering not renewing.
One thing that has really surprised me in reading this is that the young men are as interested in phones/texting as the young ladies are. Wow ~ surprise!
-
I just cut off my kids fingers, ...blinded them,...popped their eardrums,.... and sewed their mouths shut.
That way i don't have to worry about texting, or this pesky world getting to their fragile constitutions,..
Saves me from having to do the work of a parent..
Hey, why the hell did i have them anyway????
(Insert any of today's terrible parents here}........
It's a trend
