Title: Personal plane numbers
Post by: Jiblowey on March 28, 2008, 06:35:43 PM
So yea, I know that we can make our planes look different by picking different skins. But how about a personal plane number.

You dont know what I am talking about do you?

It would be a number that you could set in the O-club, any 2-3 digit number (01, 23, 99, 354, etc) that would show up on the wing and tail (vertical stabilizer) just like the squad logo. In fact, I dont know how it works, but it would have all most the same programing as the squad logo.

A personal number could be used is FSO's when planes are tightly packed together, when some one is so close to you you can see their name but can see their wing or tail. Also you could tell who's who when taking a screen shot.

So to help show what I am talking about, I in about 5 minuets photo shopped a screen shot form the community page.
Thats what i came up with.

I dont know what font HTC might use, but I used impact. As for color, there could be 2-3 colors to pick form, that way if you are using a white plane skin, you can have black numbers.

I know this wont make the planes look histoicaly accurate, but it would give a little personal touch to the planes.

It would be over the top of the skin, just like the squad logo.

Unless you meant how I did a horibal(SP) job at making that. It was my first time with prescriptive tool.

And you wouldnt have to set it if you didnt want to see it.

For one extra .bmp?

no, for the extra time it takes to retrieve and load a personalised .bmp from his computer thru the server to mine every time I encounter his aircraft.

It's unrealistic, more junk to cause lag, and pointless.

Assuming that the number BMP is stored on the other users system. Rather if it was a preset group of number 'stencils', and the only thing that gets sent to your system is an integer when the other guy's plane first loads on your front end, it could be rather quick and painless.

You could even go as far as changing Font color for those of us who fly with Squad numbers and colors. :aok

I was lazy and didnt search, I should have. But your number would not be just yours, it would only have a number if you where is a squad.

Tails was right about how it would work.

10thmd I said that you could pick a few other colors to stand out if different skins on other planes.

C(Sea)Bass, most planes in WWWII had id numbers some where on them, I am saying make it so we can set that number to what we like so the plane would be more our own.

DiabloTX, I was thinking it would only be numbers, nothing other than 0-9 in 2-3 digits. But it would be funny to see pi on the side on a plane.

SD67, LOL. I was going to use that as an example, but I wanted to try and keep it clean for those who know that that means.

Thanks all for the good feed back, and those who dont like it, we, gerr to you.

Yea, I agree with you.

And now that I think about it, maybe if this was added there could also be a button to turn them off if you lag.

But I dont know how the server telling your computer to load a number it knows in a font it knows would cause lag. Bullets or voice would cause more lag than a number.
Title: Re: Personal plane numbers
Post by: Larry on March 30, 2008, 04:13:39 PM
Jiblowey this isnt nascar. Planes in WW2 didnt have numbers stinceled all over thier planes like you are showing. They had ID numbers on the tail of the plane and "groupe" numbers or letters on the side of the fuselage. Thats about it.

A different number, font, and color for every plane would just bring more lag and would just be unhistorical.
Title: Re: Personal plane numbers
Post by: Jiblowey on March 30, 2008, 05:13:47 PM
I wasn't saying make them look like race cars, I was saying make them more identifiable and customizable. They dont have to be exactly how I showed them. And I know they would be unhistorical, but then again when did p51s fly side by side with 109s?

Will never happen.  you will ruin the skin w/ a gaudy number on it.

Soooo, we have Zipcode Warriors & now someone wants a number to ID others??  You do know there are ALOT of dif. players right?

You do know you can set a size of the icons that hover above players right?

If I see one of my skins looking like this, I will ask it to be removed from the game. Seriously.

Title: Re: Personal plane numbers

Ok, let's look at it from this angle:

Let's say just like nose art, each aircraft is set up to display the number in a specific position (IE, in F4Us it's on the front landing gear door and on each side of the fuselage forward of the roundel). The problem is, skins in the game already HAVE aircraft ID numbers as part of the skin. HTC would have to toss out the skins and institute generic, numberless skins otherwise your individual plane number will get lost against the number already part of the skin. Additionally, each skin would need to be very specifically designed to ensure the number wouldn't interfere with any other artwork (odd-sized/placed national insignia, etc).

I like the IDEA, as it would offer both immersion, and would look really sweet in screens--especially integrated with the ability for squads to create their own unique skins rather than just a nose art file--but I don't see this working with the way skins are currently handled.

You are right about the way the numbers could work Saxman. And I though about that and came up with the idea of having them on part of the wing and tail as not to interfere with the planes skin.

I cam up with this idea on an FSO when my whole squad was using the same skin on the same plane. I thought a personal number some where on the wing and tail would help us stand out a little more.

Also, when flying along, you see a plane with a number on the side, you recognize the number as some one you shot down earlier.

The secret is to take a name that has some historical reference, then get one of the skinners to do a skin of it (Thanks Fester).

You can then have your AH name right on your plane all the time :)

Wasnt there a guy how wanted the F86 in the game because he thought it was used in WWII? Or the people that think the YP80 should be in the game? I think this is in the top ten, but not number one.

Masher I disagree. Handled PROPERLY it could be nice for immersion (in other words: Numbers where they would be HISTORICALLY not randomly positioned on wings/tail as in the examples) but it's DEFINITELY a low-priority use of bandwidth.

Furthermore, if you need a "number on a wing" to let you know who your buddies are, you should be instead working on your SA.

Sax, this is NOT directed at you.

Again, "NASCAR style numbers" as per the pictures with desecrated skins that took MANY HOURS to create is not efficient, nor productive.

Do you have them all downloaded? If you don't have a skin that someone is wearing downloaded, it will show the default. I very rarely see default skins, except on La's and P39's since they dont have any custom skins, yet.

What I had in mind origionally was something such as this:

http://www.markstyling.com/F4U.htm

Not a random style marking, but defined in the oringinal skin file so ONLY the digits would be selectable. But it's a moot point from the reactions I've seen here.

I like the configurable numbering in IL2.  I fly for 4./JG53 as White 8 + -
It is great, especially with the matmanager that aces artwork puts out.  It really lets you choose from historically placed markings from most nations to aply to in game aircraft.  But in a game like this where the talented peoples that make the wonderfully done skins we have make them after a specific pilots ride and we do not have the option in setup to remove the plane specific markings to then aply a more generically aplied marking scheme.  Basically what I am trying to say is the goofy looking Nascar style numbering is crap, it ruins the skins that these skinners have worked soo hard on.  Furhurmore to generically slap a tail number as an external decal in the propper places would still ruin/not be compatible with skins that are already aplied with the propper decals and markings for the pilot specific ride that they skinned.  IL2 uses a different skinning method so it works there, but it would not be good in here.

(By the way, can y'all skinners do me a huge favor.  Can ya make me a JG.53 skin for a Bf.109? Please)  :aok
