Title: Dont mute me bro!
Post by: effect on April 22, 2008, 10:01:22 PM
Recently, a few peeps we're muted for what many folks at the time thought didn't warrant being muted. i.e. 'B24s hit' '<F>' 'Fword' and so on. Triggering an all out assault on the moderators on ch.200 by those muted and many who weren't.  Granted that some of it is a blatant attempt to 'fool' the Mods but people are going to say what they want to say and get their point across one way or another.  IMHO Mods have personal agendas due to the fact that some folks can get away with blatant profanity and some get muted for what most would consider minor infractions.  I just think that the mods should be more personal about it.  Instead of sending those little pop-up messages, PM the so called guilty party and let him know why hes being warned or muted.  I think the individual should have the right to explain or defend himself.  Just a thought.

I know that I don't have the answer, I also know that complaining about it doesn't do any good.  I just want to hear what other peoples opinions are and what they have to say about it.

My opinion....don't do the crime and you don't have to worry about doing time. Which is simple common sense (some people do seem to lack this). It would also appear (from your example) that it isn't a mod that is doing the muting, but, the profanity parser.

I do know that the arenas aren't live modded all the time. Which would explain what you see as them allowing others to get away with things.

In the end, it isn't rocket science. Unlike the spoken word, you actually do have to put, at least, a little thought into what you type. There for there is no excuse. Oh, and things like this generally get closed the next morning. :)

Yep, you're not in a bar with some drunken sailors. You're in HiTech's house and if you dont say it in front of your mother, don't say it in HiTech's house.
Bad word filter usually gives a warning. If Mods did they be argueing with everyone.
Personally I <S> the Mods, whomever they are, keep up the good work.

Apologies to you drunken sailors for lumping you in with those who can't control what comes out of their mouths or what their fingers type.

I always wondered about the "meaning" of the < f >, I always was under the belief if was giving a < finger > humorously like flipping off a buddy, or a silent way of flipping the bird instead of cussing out loud.

kind of like how the < s > is a non-verbal motion, it isn't a word; it is the text representation of an action. I guess my question is does the action of "flipping someone off" constitute actual cussing, or is it like just a gesture saying go away, i am not happy with you?

If people really do think it means < bleep you > I wonder why this carrotted text string is different than the main one < s >, and is a word, instead of a gesture?

sorry just some questions I have had.

Defensive? Odd, you brought it up  :rofl

Yanno, it is possible to carry on a conversation without ever triggering the automatic warning or gaining a mods attention.

Really, try it some time.  No one is forcing anyone to type anything.  You think the mods in the main arena are tough?  Survive a special event with one of my guys and pull something :)

Wish they would mute the guys that constantly cry when they die and belittle people calling them names for hours on end. Same ole stupid line over and over and over again. I'd prolly tune 200 more if It wasn't full of idiots that babble and argue with everyone hours on end. Their more disruptive then the occasional guy that mistypes a cuss word.

funny thing bout that filter.....i was loosing control a little the other night(but it was HIS fault, not mine! :rofl).....anyway, i typed "chit"......i think twice...the first time nothing...the second time, i had a pop=up window staring me in the face warning that continued profanity would result in loss of comm privledges........guess it learns too? and seriously..i don't generally type like that in here....

First, I wasnt muted, I've just got enough balls to bring it up.  Second, yes, defensive.  Its a perfectly logical thread, and HTC mods are threatening to delete it and doing the name calling.  'cheeze balls' comes to mind.  I'm not here for a fight, just wanted opinions but apparently the Mods and others think differently.       :rofl  :rofl  :rofl

Only thing that bothers me about the whole filter thing is the F4UC 1K that I sometimes type in (or something similar, I can't quite remember)

That's the only time I get a message.  Other than that...never been warned, muted so it isn't that big of a problem IMHO.

text filters dont always work that well. coupla years ago I suddenly got permabanned from an ET server I used to play on. went to the clan's forum and asked why, got the response
"we will NOT tolerate racism of any kind on our server. you have been permabanned, there is no appeal and your login to the forums will be deleted."
finally got them to dig out the logs, someone had typed a slightly smutty joke on global chat and I had responded with *s-n-i-g-g-e-r*. doh. (had to insert hyphens here cus this forum also isnt too smart)

Bipolor grow up, if you acted like a decent responsible adult you wouldn't constantly have problems.

Effect I used to be a mod, I can swear to you on all that I hold holy and dear that mods do NOT have it "in" for people. After all, they just want to fly too. But if you persist in bad language, attitudes, and attacking people you will draw their attention.  Once you have done so can you really expect people to forget overnight?
Also what you think people "get away" with is more often than not a 10 - 60 min mute. Mods do their work behind the scenes, you don't know what warnings are sent. You don't know what mutes are handed out. So how can you critique their job performance????

You guys think the MA mods or the CM crew are tough, come play with me in the TA someday.

Not to mention that I taught many  of those CM guys how to run an event. (or deal with problems)  <S>

<f> what's the difference of typeing that than typing "wtf"? Most of the younger kids know and type more slang computer phrases than i've even heard of. I'm fairly tolerant of people getting frustrated and venting a bit but when they go on a profanity laden rant for 5 min or more i just squelch em. I've squelched people that were not even talking to me but on country channel just for being annoying and ranting about something that had nothing to do with the game. I'd like to see a "request moderator" type button somewhere. Instead of the moderator just jumping in for something he/she finds offensive, unless it's blatant, he/she should have to be requested to look at the offenders text/vox.

Keep a civil tongue in your head and you wont have any problems. The problem is that all the prepubescent little boys think that using profanity makes them sound older when in fact it proves just how immature they really are.

I have never even been warned let alone muted. So as others have said grow up and you wont have any problems.

WRONG!

While that might work on the automatic text moderating code, it has no effect on a group of twits who decide they are going to abuse the .report feature and report someone simply because they don't like them.

It's the #1 latest dirty trick in the game, and there seems to be no price to pay for those who do it.

If the dirty tricksters do in on a Friday after 5 PM Central...you are text screwed until Monday.

The other one is the flipping of the bird which is also English , due to the battle of Agincourt in I believe the yr. 1041 when the French wanted to cut off the bow shooting fingers of King Henrys Archers so in defence of themselves they  ( flipped of the French troops ) and this is the same battle of ( We few we happy few )

I lost my text for a short couple of minutes 1 time in the whole time Ive been flying this sim.  And it was for something lame that was I think done by the auto filter thing.  I had a squadie named hornet who landed some kills, so I typed/said "WTG Horney"  and blamo muted.  I suppose it could be misconstrued as me cussing but It was not meant as such it was just me shortening his name/using a nick name as I do for most everyone I fly with.  Just like most just call me "Daddy" or "Ack" it just depends.  As I have said in many posts before HTC y'alls dooing a great job.  :salute

there was this one time a mod muted me for what he/she said was fighting on 200 it was with me and LTARmac. i got muted cause the mod thought i was trying to start chit. then i foght with the mod and that was not a smart idea.

As an adult who doesn't mind locker room language (don't LIKE it either but not offended) this is a thorny issue. I realize that  the main point is that children and people who may very well BE OFFENDED (unlike me) are in the game and deserve some insulation from these comments. Let it be known I have never been muted. My problem is that the "rules" seem rather inconsistently applied. If we REALLY want no bad language then the rule should be liberally construed, i.e., "ST-U,"  and "AK Poussez" should be dealt with the same way as writing out the words.

Furthermore, what I do mind in game is all of the aggressive, insulting talk that falls short of bad language. This is why I don't tune 200. If one has a problem a PM would be better than the insults that fly. I wish people were mature and civil in what is, after all, JUST a game, but I realize that this is unlikely to happen. I wish the moderators would chime in and say "please stop calling all of your team "morons" and "idiots"", or "it takes two to H-O so deal with your death in silence." I'm sure that in our smack-talking, door barging, indoor cell phone talking, parking space homicide, road rage world ----this isn't going to happen.

Corrs, With a little thought, you may be able to start an AH comic strip with these.

Good strip fun could be.
1. Some one being vulched.
2. "This game sucks, I quit,I never playing again, (10 sec later) ..... What field are you at?"
3. The intricacies of spawn camping.
4. Dive bombing Lancs.
6. Ack - Ack with Auto retracting flaps.
7. The loss of some ones first 262.

I just tried to find the story that was posted a while back about a visit to HTC but can't remember who posted it and lost the link to the site where it's posted.  That would be a great start to a comic strip as we all laughed our arses off.  Unfortunatly, it doesn't have HiTech as Superman, more of a vulcher, but I'm sure you could adapt it somehow.

That simply doesn't sound credible on face value. Sorry.

100% exactly what happened.

a squaddie called HTC (had similar incident) and per them, if the abuse is not on 200 or country channel  I.E. something the public can see, and the profanity is not spelled correctly..  there is no corrective action that can be taken,  just squelch them.

and if you DO use the report function on them for doing as said above, you are in the wrong, not  them.

IF your squaddie called us and complained about someone sending an abusive or derogatory PM, we would have asked for a screenshot or a film.  We are intolerant of people who are abusive and/or derogatory.  No one here would have told him what you claim.

Using the .report mechanism is the right thing to do.  If this mechanism is abused, then the abusers lose thier text/VOX permissions.  Such as a squad ganging up on another player.

Propagating this type of misinformation is almost as bad as someone using masked profanity in the game.

I keep TELLIN EVERYONE FILM IT!

alt + r

or take a picture

alt + s

then if you feel it needful SEND it to Skuzzy!

If you are correct and you are being ABUSED............It WILL be dealt with!

It's this way. None of us has ANY WAY to deal with this type of thing!

The good people at HTC KNOW this!

The only way we can do anything about it is give it to HTC.

So FILM it, take a PICTURE, RECORD it some way so you can PROVE the matter and then SEND the item it in.

IT WILL BE DEALT WITH!
