Title: Attention GV'ers: Tank Club
Post by: Sloehand on May 27, 2008, 10:11:20 AM
After a recent GV-based Snapshot event, which was a lot of fun, and talking to a couple of the participants, I was thinking of seeing if anyone was interested in re-starting Tank Club again. For those that don't know, this was a weekly event for GV'ers held in the DA.  Many of the game's best tankers showed up and we basically split up into two teams, spawned in and went at it.  Pretty simple, but the practice helped many learn where to hit a particular tank model to kill it, among other things.  Even some team GV tactics were tried out.

I'm going to volunteer to sort of 'host' an initial Tank Club event this Sunday at 4pm Pacific time, in the DA, in the vehicle play area.  Any and all are welcome to show up and participate.  If enough people are interested in pure GV to GV gameplay like this, we can decide to continue on a weekly basis.

With that in mind, I'm looking for about 3 volunteers to help referee this, should it become a regular thing.  These people would rotate weekly among themselves to host/referee, then participate.  I'm planning to add a small bit of structure to help set up different combat scenarios and/or each team's tank composition.  This will be modestly like a Snapshot, but not historical in nature.

I've also asked if HiTech might add some spawns in another area of the DA in a future update so as to provide more varied terrain and combat options.  May or may not happen.

So, if you're a dedicated tanker, or want some regular practice and learning opportunities on tanks and tactics, join in to Tank Club, this Sunday @ 4pm Pacific time in the DA.

P.S.  Open to suggestions on how TC could be developed and evolve, the Club day and time, and even the name.  Might be something catcher that someone will think of.

P.P.S.  This is NOT a HiTech/Aces High sanctioned event (as yet  :D ), but an independent and ad hoc gathering of like-minded tank enthusiasts.

The current time and day given (Sunday, June 1st, at 4pm Pacific) is just for this first time to see who is interested and get things started.  Will be canvassing for suggestions of a better day and/or time for everyone.

If you are the least bit interested try to show up, if even for just a few minutes.  We will be looking to find the best time to accomodate everyone.  We may even decide to do it twice a week.  Everything is open right now.

Title: Re: Attention GV'ers: Tank Club
Post by: Sloehand on June 03, 2008, 03:05:38 AM
While turnout was small (Forum being down = limited promotion) it was spirited and fun.  To recap, about 8 people showed up in the DA, and for the first half hour we just friendly furballed in the mud a bit.  Then with only 6 players I still set up a combat scenario everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

Acting as referee from CM Eye Mode, I had two tankers spawn in for the town in Tigers where they were to defend the two churches from being destroyed by the other team of 4 M-8's.  The Tigers had 1 life only and the M-8's had two.

Just as the Tigers started to approach the town I released the M-8's to spawn.  Both sides had to first FIND the two churches, whether to defend or destroy.  There were a variety of tactical solutions available to each side.

Guess who won???   The M-8's... but barely.  After all four lost their first lives to the Tigers they revised their tactics and with only 1 M-8 remaining (Tigers were bruised a bit, but never hurt) the second church was destroyed, despite BOTH Tigers being in close proximity.  It was a riot.

Anyway, the idea of TANK CLUB is to do a sort of modified, simplified Snapshot, but with no historical reference.  We'll develop and run various match-ups of the different GV's, balanced and unbalanced opponents (dependent upon tanks made available to each side), and a variety of mission objectives to provide a multitude of combat situations.  I have several scenarios in mind.

We will do, hopefully two battles minimum, with each side getting to be both attacker and then defender in whatever mission is proposed.  Someone (myself for now, and other voluteers) will referee and as much as is possible, score each battle.  Referees can rotate each week to be able to participate.

There will be absolutely no aircraft or bombing involved.  This is strictly for tankers.  There shouldn't be many rules, but a few will be needed depending upon the battle scenario or scoring, same as the Snapshot.

IF Tank Club gets popular enough that we get sides of 12, 15, 20 tanks each, I have some further ideas to expand the gameplay to facilitate true armored tactics (or as reasonable facsimile as we can accomplish).

Our one critical constraint is that the DA has only ONE area for tanks and it is flat and mostly featureless.  This can make things a bit stale over time.  I have suggested at the next update that HiTech add some spawns at the bases in the Canyons area.  Who knows whether that will ever happen?

However, my real long term goal is, if we get some sizable turnouts, I might be able to interest a real CM to setup the SEA for us during unused time, for our Club battles.  This would give us unlimited terrain options and tank scenarios.  Maybe this might even become a sanctioned event someday.

This is why I picked Sunday (late afternoon/early evening) to start things off, as there is currently minimal activity in the SEA on that day (Monday as well, I think).  So, I thought to get people acclimated to that day in the hopes eventually we can move from the DA to there.

Finally, if anyone is interested developing a battle scenario for the Club and submitted it, please PM me and I'll provide my email address.  You would need to plan out the scenario, including the force composition for each side with adjustments for different numbers of participants, any rules about number of lives (re-ups), out bounds areas, spawn timing, mission objectives, and scoring.

Please help get the word out and tell other serious GV'ers you know about this.  And show up this coming Sunday for the second TANK CLUB event, in the DA at the vehicle base area, at 4pm Pacific/7pm Eastern.  Tune your vox channel to 203 for TANK CLUB.  And if at all possible, come a bit early so we can briefly discuss what we want to do and get organized.  This is YOUR TANK CLUB so I'm expect to spend a little time hearing some ideas from everyone.  Your contribution, patience and cooperation will be rewarded!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what the LTAR's were?

Great idea, I'm sure quite a few of the DEA will be there, although most of the rest of us don't do the forum thing, I'll let them know. :salute

Just a reminder to anyone interested.  The second TANK CLUB meeting/event will be held this Sunday in the DA (vehicle area) at 4pm Pacific/7pm Eastern.  I have an new battle scenario scoped out for this one.

Also, I have several questions/proposals to be answered by the Club members (euphemism for anyone who shows up  :lol), so show up and contribute your opinion.

Also, a minor development.  After a brief discussion with a CM I know, it seems quite possible that, if I can engage the interest of another CM or two who like to GV, we may be able to move to the SEA at a time when it is not otherwise in use.

The CM's would set up the arena for us and start logs, and then they could join in the fun.  They would of course be available with their superpowers should anyone attempt to disrupt our proceedings.

Please continue to get the word out, and...  Keep 'em Rolling!!!

your wrong. LTARS have never been a tank club. in the begining LTAR only knew how to GV. LTAR was REALLY known for their BAD ARSE OSTI's. they never where a TANK CLUB that would down grade the name of LTAR in the founders eyes.

Well, the second TANK CLUB event went off last Sunday better than the first one.  A few more people showed up and we were able to do 3 different battles.  Spent almost 2 hours fighting it out.

Hoping for even more people this Sunday.  Many people have said they were interested, especially some of the more well-known tankers in the game, but haven't made an appearance yet.

If this event is to continue we need to see more people at least show up to check it out.  I've been trying to contact CM's to help move this to the SEA, but they do require a minimum number of people showing up regularly to even consider it.  Moving to the SEA would really broaden what I/we can do in terms of mission variety.

So, if you're at all interested in doing some GV battles without planes bombing all the time, or want to learn how the 'experts' kill you at 5K+ then come out the next TANK CLUB.  This Sunday @ 4pm Pacific/7pm Eastern in the DA.  Tune vox to 203.

For those interested, a reminder.  TANK CLUB is today in the DA at 4pm Pacific/7pmEastern, and all times in between. :D

Upon entering the DA, tune vox to 203.

Suggest coming in on time or a couple minutes early to be sure to get in on the first battle of the day.  If you're late and once sides are set up, you might (or might not) have to wait until the 2nd battle to get into the action (that's usually only 10-20 minutes).

No problem Kilz.  I know you'll be there when you can.  We'll keep looking for ya.    :noid

In spite of several regulars from the first two events being gone, had a very good turnout for Father's Day, including some well known tankers (dr7, rondar, LTARaptr) showing up for their first time.  With many good tankers who've been showing up each week like wonder, SEpntiun, stodd, curlew and others, we've been having some riproaring good GV fun.  And not a bomber in sight.  :rock

I'm guessing here, but I think we've had nearly 50 or more different people show up for the first 3 TANK CLUB events.  With only one minor disturbance of a couple of squeakers who soon left, it's gone of pretty well each week, and everyone has said they've had great fun, evidenced by most returning for a second or third week.

Still, if I'm going to be able to get this into the SEA and turn it into a full-blown, regular event, more people need to participant.  And since it seems to be well received by those who have participated, I'm real hopeful as word gets out.

So, if you think you'd like to GV with some of the best tankers in the game without planes bombing you all the time, then check out TANK CLUB every Sunday at 4pm Pacific/7pm Eastern (and all time zones in between) in the DA, over in the vehicle area.  Just to Vox to channel 203 to join in.    :D

All (who don't squeak too much, and will play respectfully of others) are welcome!    :aok

TanK Klub Update!

Last Sunday's TanK KluB was the best and largest ever.  Over 25 players showed up, and with several regulars unable to make it last week, that means alot of new faces trying it for the first time.  This event is growing and everyone seems to be having fun.  I started out expecting to keep people's attention for only an hour or so.  We are now going on for two and even two and a half hours, and many still want to do more!

Anyway, I introduced a new jeep race course and congrats to B4Buster for his win.  He lead from the start and never looked back.  Though some stayed close for awhile, by the end of the second lap he was clearly in command of the lead.  No one it seems could touch him.

For this coming Sunday, I have two new games.  One is again a jeep race, but this time it's a Team Relay race on a fast lap track.  [If you want to know how I devised a 'fast track' 'relay' race in the DA, you'll just have to show up and find out.   ]

The second new game is a variation on Shooting Gallery that I call "Fox in the Henhouse".  It's a type of turkey shoot competition of tank main gun shooting kill.  Might be fun.

All this and one or two of our other regular games: BattleRoyal, Home Run, Davids & Goliaths (which I really like to call "Kill the Churchladies"  :D) or Verminator.

We are quickly reaching the point where I might have a chance to get a CM interested in hosting at least one event for us in the SEA.  This would be a major tank battle requiring CinC's on both sides, multiple spawns, targets, bases and tactical options, probably running a full two hours.  Sort of a cross between a Snapshot (1 frame only) and a Scenario (sign up to participate, and some pre-strategizing and tactical planning).  I already have three possible battles planned out and nearly operational.  I'm still trying to find the right name for such an event.  My best idea so far is "TanK KluB - Iron Battleground!".  Any other ideas out there?

Now for a survey question for anyone who has yet to attend a TanK KluB event (no need for past attendees to reply, I know your answer   :aok).  If I can get a major tank battle scenario together and hosted in the SEA, who would  be interested in signing up for it and participating (real life allowing of course)???  [FYI - probably be a 2 week period to sign up and plan strategy prior to the event happening.]

I'm trying hard to put together something new for everyone to enjoy, though GV's are not everyone's thing, alot of people do like fighting in them.  I'm hoping TanK KluB will provide one more dimension for enjoyment of AH overall.

And remember... TanK KluB, this coming, and every, Sunday, 4pm Pacific/7pm Eastern (and those two other time zones in between) hosted in the DA.  Show up and tune your vox to 203.

P.S.  Preferrably show up a little early as it takes some time to get organized at the start.  Also, for those that don't know how to set up CM Eye Mode so that they can watch the ongoing battle once they are, uhhh, removed from the immediate action, I will provide instruction to do so before TanK KluB starts.

TanK Klub Update!
Last Sunday's TanK KluB was the best and largest ever.  Over 25 players showed up,

When i started the original tank Klubb i had 40 show up the first night, the second night we had over 40, and the best night was the 4th night when we had 60 people there which got the attention of 68falcon and 68KO who eventually gave us the first GV snapshot in the SEA where we had 80 + people involved, so i hope that this new spark will maybe get them to make it a weekly snapshot in the SEA, you just have to have someone that can design some good events in there that way they have something to run every week.

keep up the effort sloehand. :salute

I say we get Sloehand as part of the CM Team, I think we would all like that and we won't have people inturupting our battles, such as 2 weeks ago.

Had another good group on hand for yesterday's TanK Klub.  Had our biggest David and Goliath game (Tigers vs. M8s) yet, and still the M8's won, but it was a nail-biter at the end.

We only got to do a second game as it was something new I was working out and it took a bit of organizing to get it up and running.  Not to mention a couple of minor (read squeaker) interruptions.  Anyway it was different, and I want to thank everyone who helped keep it rolling by paying attention, and especially to my favorite target... uh, friend, Kilz for calling out the spawn teams.  It took part of the load off me, so thanks Kilz, you 'Da Man!'.  You guys can't imagine how confusing it is to try manage one of these things, keeping it moving along and fair, so you guys don't get too bored.  I think I'm getting premature Alzheimer's from it.   :O

Anyway, it was a Shooting Gallery type event (please, don't even call it a spawn camping event, ugggg!) in call 'Fox In The Henhouse' which is basically an individual contest of main gun shooting in your MBT of choice.  Given the fast and furious nature of the targets popping up, it was surprise how many chose Tigers with their slower main gun traverse.  It was further surprise (and a bit scary) how well some did with the Tiger.

Each guy got a chance to step up to the firing line and kill as many of 10 M3's as he could before they reached safety.  To no one's surprise dr7's lazer-equiped, bore-sighted gun killed 9 out of 10 to win the event.  Quite a let down he didn't get them all.  Must be getting old.  Weakening eyesight and all.   Our favorite Man-About-Death, Kilz came in second with 8 kills (sort of poetic there, don't you think?).  And we had a three way tie for third, though it looked like our last shooter TonyJoey was going to sweep all 10, and probably would have if his gun hadn't needed to traverse so far around to get on the last couple of targets.  Luck of the spawn, as it were.  Anyway, him, LTARogue and Heretic tied up with 7 kills each.  Though it took a bit too long, I think everyone had fun with it, and I plan for some modifications next time to make it go faster.

Now, just a reminder for next Sunday, we will run a Team Relay Jeep Race for the first time, which I predict will be a riot and very intense.  People are free to team up between now and Sunday (4-man teams), or wait until the race to see who shows up.  And I've already got another new game in mind, which I call Iron Joust.

For the edification of those who haven't attended TanK KluB, and give them some idea of what goes on, here are some of the tank games we've developed so far.

Battle Royal - (3 lives in 3 different tanks, duke it out in the town)
Davids & Goliaths - small number of Tigers defend against a horde of M8's bent on destroying specific buildings in town to win.
Home Run - Sort of armored roller derby.  Get the your M8(s) back home onto the main pad, while preventing the other side from doing the same.  The tactical dilemma?  Do you surround your M8 with your Tigers/Shermans/Panzers, or move them ahead to seek out and destroy the enemy tanks first, or roll some back to the enemy's base to intercept their M8, or do you send your M8 on a lone high-speed end-around to your home base?  Or, all of the above.
The Verminator - fast and wild Jeep vs. Jeep melee in the town.  Multiple lives, multiple kills.  Stop moving and you die.
Fox In The Henhouseb] (a Shooting Gallery)[/ - Individual shooting skill contest. Most M3 kills wins.
The Plunge (Crosscountry Downhill Jeep Racing) - Should be called EXTREME downhill jeep racing.
The Mixmaster (eXtreme Jeep Racing) - Tight, twisting course requiring careful, full control individual jeep racing.
Circle Jerks (Team Relay Jeep Race) - Round and around they go, which team will win, nobody knows.
Iron Joust - It's a surprise, but better be able to shoot on the move.

One last note.  I've gotten some CM support for putting on a one-time-only TanK Klub battle in the SEA.  This would not be in the form of the 'games' we're doing now, but a formal Snapshot-like tank battle of around two hours in length, with multiple objectives, a CinC for each side, and advance sign-up, all similar in nature to the FSO's and Scenario's.

This is going to take some planning, but I've got a CM who might host it with me, and can help get it planned out.  Timeframe for it, considering the upcoming Rangoon Scenario, is still probably a month or two away, but we're getting there.  With this CM's assistance, we may even be able to make this a fairly regular event in the SEA in the future.

Last, but not least.  Remember TanK Klub, this and every Sunday at 4pm Pacific/7pm Eastern, at the vehicle area in the DA, vox channel 203 for instructions.

Keep 'em Rolling!

Man i have been drooling over this and I stilll haven't been able to come but I think I can today.

My guess at iron joust is:
U have two tanks of the same type going against each other and they both have to go straight and they try to shoot each other with their guns.  Sounds just like old timely jousting except with 50 ton metal monsters that shoot shells that weigh as much as horses against each other lol.  I hope my guess is right see ya there.

oh and <S>sloehand for organizing this.

your guess would be wrong its alot better then that. we try to bring fun stuff to the klub but at the same time try to keep it to stuff that would happen in the MA.

No problem.  Not to rub it in or anything, but you missed our biggest group ever!  At one point we had 29 players, and quite a few were trying it out for the first time, so we have a big group of people who participate when the can.

We tried two new games, Iron Joust and the Jeep Relay Race, which was a riot IMO.  The Iron Joust seemed to meet with great approval as well.

We'll look for you next week.

We'l have something quite a bit different for the upcoming TanK KluB, thanks to a couple of the players and their help working this out.  It's something new in terms of the mission and should be a fairly wild ride.  Just so you know, it's a kind of a hunt with lots of shooting back and forth going on.   :pray

Anyway, the more the merrier.  We've had a couple of turnouts of around 30 players, so if we get some of the semi-regulars to show up a bit more, we'll be hitting 40 or more players soon.

If you haven't tried it, come see what we're doing, at least once!

This Sunday, in the DA, 4pm Pacific/7pm Eastern, come early and tune your vox to channel 203 to know what's going on.

P.S. I've decided on an S.O.P. for picking sides that should make things go much faster, and could be more fair.   :devil

Yah iron joust was a blast.  I liked the jeep race too but I think it needed more turns so there would be more flips and more oppurtunities to pass people.

SOMETHING NEW FOR TANK KLUB!!!

This Sunday we're going to try a little more involved combat, something that will be a taste of the larger battles we'll be doing in the SEA.  As best as I can with the limited resources, this is going to be a little less 'game-like' and more armored combat-like, I hope.

I'm going to need another referee to help manage this, and two serious, dedicated CinC's.  The CinC for each side will appoint an XO, if they want one, and a couple of platoon leaders (PL) to help with the assignment of tanks and determining tactics.  This battle will require a bit of strategy thinking on both sides so be prepared for more than just spawn in and rush to the town.

Show up as early as you can because this will take some time to organize from scratch, but should produce a more major tactical battle than we've had so far.  That is, if we have the same kind of numbers we had last week.   :aok

Sunday, 4pm Pacific, in the DA, vox 203.
