Title: how bout those armchair generals......
Post by: NavyOne1978 on June 07, 2008, 09:19:43 AM
what do you all think of the aviation "lawyers".. you know the guys that sit there and nitpick every little thing everyone else does, calling foul on all things, real or imagined... I understand there are ethics, and unwritten rules to the game, but those who complan at EVERY percieved infraction, every 5 minutes, and always are the quickest to point out violations are annoying as hell..

These are the guys that complain that everything someone else does is unfair, and probably spams HTC email with video and screenshots of some injustice.. How do you all deal with these guys??

No.  He's beefing about bossy bosses.  NB  They are an essential part of AH2.  Without them, the game would devolve into a bunch of guys shooting at each other in planes for fun.

;)

As to bossy bosses, I used to be one.  AND no one listened.  Good for them!!

A funny one: ran a mission long time ago.  Target was at 045 from the staging field.  I'm 1/2 there in a goon.  Mission ups.  I ask Slammer to bring 'em to the field.  I watching dar.  Field runway points 225 or thereabouts.  1 min in bunches o dots still heading 225 dead out sea with no land in sight forever and I hearing Slammer on vox "this way ladies, this way ladies."

Is VERY funny once you begin to take it all less seriously.

How do I deal with it?
I wait until a base is taken, then I chastise them on country channel for sitting in the tower shouting orders, then I type .squelch (ltown/baba/drdeathx/squeaker etc). Works pretty well, I think.

Only the ones that won't stop repeating the same tactical/strategic arguments, even after they're acknowledged and/or refuted, and/or type them in all caps are truly annoying.  They get squelched.

We have a few on the knit side. They serve a purpose for those that think basecapture and such is what the game is all about, but i usually dont bother with em.

Some times if im over a field and a friendly misson (or just one of the generals and his posse) arrives and commands me not to pork the field I go into turbo mode and pork even more than I intended to in the first place.

"Waaaa dont pork ords, Waaaaaa dont pork troops we will have it soon". An hour later and they still buzz around and havent taken the field, but our cv is dead or a nearby base has been captured.  :D

I'm confused.  Wouldn't the game have to be "Real" in order for someone criticizing it to qualify as an "armchair" general ?   Isn't that what they call the talking heads on TV who give us advise on how to fight real conflicts 2,000 miles away ?  Wouldn't that person also have to be someone Removed from the actual combat ?
And the people doing the criticizing in the main arena ARE actually in the game fighting it, arn't they ?  That doesn't seem to fit the definition of an "armchair" general.  "Armchair" meaning once removed from the combat.
Are you suffering from the delusion that you're the Only person in the game fighting it correctly, while others are unfairly criticizing you ?  Then you ask other people suffering from the same delusion to validate that for you.  And they do it !
My advise to you is that you should give this some thought and seek help.

Let me ask the rest of you. When you had one week in the game did you post about armchair Generals?

People forget that many of us have gone thru all the stages of the game. Most of us start off really enthusiastic and slowly over the years are just happy to get a few good fights in. The bases and stuff are just the reason for the fight. Not the fight itself. I tend to ignore them,or leave the area they are in.

Just like any other group of players, you are going to encounter those that have different priorities than you do.  As you play AH more, you may find that your interests and priorities also change.

You will also encounter those with different behavior and emotional levels than you have.  Just like there's going to be the guy that pitches a fit for being the one pulled over out of a crowd of 10 other cars, all doing well above the speed limit, you will encounter the player that vehemently spews about how everybody is out to get them and every plane HOs or runs or vulches or directs their laser-guided bomber guns at them.. etc ad nausem.

A couple things tend to happen to these types of folks.

- They drive themselves nuts from frustration and storm away from the game ( Inflamatory BBS postings to that effect are optional ) .. only
to come back a year or so later.. experience same and leave again.. rinse and repeat ..

- They undergo an epiphany that other people may actually enjoy a different aspect of the game and learn to tolerate this.

I don't like players that insult other countrymen, and it used to bother me a lot more than it does now.  I've seen enough to realize that arguing with these guys just makes life un-fun for everybody else that isn't directly affected. People having Un-fun leave the game... which leads to less country support .. which, generally, is the basis for the confrontation to start with.  So by berating your teammates for lack of support generally leads to even less support.

Nowadays, I just mute them or specifically avoid the area the insulters are working.  Eventually, they'll get upset enough to log off.

The real challenge is to come up with new and hopefully funny replies to the armchair general commands and observations :aok

Just dot squelch the squeaker / arm chair generals - I think its fine if a Veteran player who people trust to run missions,
or lead an attack on a base, but when Squeakers walk in giving orders what not it seriously is annoying.

Certain people I really just squelch based on fact that they are idiots to begin with.

Kinda like certain someone I know told me to go down and De-ack a base so he could get his vulch on in fighter mode. Sure be glad to
de-ack if he would of said something along lines of "lets go in together and de-ack" but Straight out "De-ack the field so I can vulch please"

Depending on the situation in which I encounter the Armchair General and what they say...... I deal with it in a variety of ways.  Sometimes I'll go along with what they're saying and try to help.  Other times I outright ignore it and sometimes, I might just switch sides and give them a reason to whine and complain.

I've seen squads break up from "dissension within" (I.E. - emails to a CO who told them "he didn't care about it").
