Judging from the size of those plants.
That number has been grossly exaggerated.
Certainly sounds better then the few hundred dollars it MIGHT produce

:aok dead on there, those estimates are very optimistic at best.

Our govt spends $10,000,000 a year of taxpayer money to have a contractor grow weed for medicinal use...One of it's most recent discoveries for it's medicinal use is for the treatment of Glycoma.
Yet it remains illegal..Where as alcohol(which has never helped anyone see straight) remains perfectly legal..and is taxed to death.
-
Actually those numbers could easily be an underestimation if you base it on street value. If they're a well developed strain, you're looking at $400 per ounce at street level prices. At a 2 pound yield per adult plant, 16 ounces to a pound, with 35,000 plants, you're looking at a potential value of $448 million.
That would be from the field, direct to the street. I'm sure there's bulk discounts involved somewhere.
It's still a *$!#load of money though. :O

exaggerated for sure but pot is a huge moneymaker.. with a moneymaker like that... no crime is too much of a risk for a whole lot of folks.

Count all the folks that you know that use marijuana (legally or otherwise) and admit to it. Add AT LEAST 25% for the people that use it and lie about it.
If you could tax it like alcohol, I can't imagine that it would take long to reduce the national debt in no time flat. :rofl

they're not even mature yet.

I once thought about a way to "legalize" pot:
You must register as a smoker, you get a credit card type thing, and it is rationed. The rationing is to keep someone from buying pot for others than themselves. sell it in 15 "joint" boxes like cigarettes, limit 1 person to 30 "joints" a month, basically 1 a day (each "joint" approximately the size of a Camel straight). To register you must be 21 and have no criminal record. Get busted for a crime (even a misdemeanor), lose pot license for 10 years.
Sell the pot for $30-$50 a box, thats $60-$100 for a months supply for 1 person. I'd bet it is a TON cheaper to make, distribute, and it would take in a windfall of money.

When I lived in Missouri, there was a place along the Missouri river that was home to a rope factory back in the 1800s. Wild hemp would grow 8 or 10 foot tall. Every year around harvest time, the cops would chop it all down and put it on display, and get thousands of dollars from the federal government for the war on drugs. The local cops knew it was no good for they even caught me with a trunk stuffed full of it one time and just took my pocket knife and made me unload it where i got it from. :rofl
I was alot younger then, and had a idea about making hash oil out of it. Never did find out if it would work or not :lol

You don't mean to say that law enforcement would fabricate numbers out of thin air just so they could
a)get harsher punishment for the grower
b)milk more money from the feds
I seem to recall a commercial from the government that told me all the pot sold was funding terrorists. Looks like al queda has invaded North Carolina.

It wouldn't work. Hemp grown for textile use is a different species. Of the 3 major species, 2 get you stoned. Ruderalis, the strain grown for textile use, has so little THC in it, you'd have had to smoke the entire trunk load to get a small buzz.
This actually became a pundit talking point on AM radio here. The guys (whom I generally agree with) started blasting Ron Paul for sponsorsing a bill to allow hemp to be grown for textile products. To them, it was one for the stoners trying to legalize pot. The reality is, they had absolutely no idea what they're talking about and simply don't like RP because he's liberal.

ding ding ding Many things can go wrong and with farming......never count your chickens......looks like the DEA did count the eggs to see how many chickens they were going to have.

It's still very early in the year. Those plans should have been 7' to 8' by late August.
Sadly, a lot of these growers are using state & national parks to grow their weed.
I used to live in NC, and I've seen 'em spot (by helicopter) and bust a perp for just ONE plant.

Foot tall plants worth two grand? The may be winning the war on drugs, but they're losing the war on math.
-
Hmmm you'd have to break down how much usable smokeable weed you could get from each plant. Then figure the street value of that product. Not to mention what the value of the buds might turn out to be. This is all assuming that the growers let the plants get to there full maturity.
That's more than likely how the officials figured the value. Still seems a little HIGH to me also. ;)
-
I think they're assuming the value should the plants reach maturity...they're (I'm guessing) about a pound per plant, which judging by the shade they were being grown in is a bit much, but not unreasonable. I've seen plants produce 5 plus pounds of bud before under optimum conditions, BTW.
-
No 1 to 4 foot tall plant is yielding 5 ounces, let alone 5 pounds. When they catch a bank robber, they count the money he took- not what it would be worth in a few years with inflation and good investments strategies figured in. They can say the pot is worth whatever amount they want, and most folks will believe it, and even if they don't, they will try to conjure up some scenario in which the amount might be believable.

At the same time 20 tons of coke was being offloaded on the southern coast.
The war on drugs......gotta luv it.

Never understand why the fed dosent legalise distilling THC then tax the bajeesus out of it.
Knew a chemist 20 years ago who bought all the NorCal pot growers pinch and distilled pot oil, liquid THC and pot powder from the distillation sludge for making brownies. He made decent money. He got greedy and changed to cocain. He got busted for selling cocain to a federal agent poseing as a stripper. He liked bringing ladies home to show off his lab. His nickname was Rasty Bob...... :)

Its actually quite easy to spot the Mary J plants from a helicopter. Use an infrared FLIR or helmet mounted camera. Mary J gives off a different heat signature than normal plants. LE Agencies who fly on the lookout for Pot will make their first pass at night. Then GPS the spots and come back in the daytime to investigate further. You can hide the plants in any type of other crop, the infrared will find it.

:rofl That bring to mind the Cheech and Chong movie where their operation is in a tent made up to look like a swimming pool. A hole gets torn in it and Cheech climbs the latter and pretends to swim as the chopper is flying over. :rofl
