WASHINGTON - Tim Russert, NBC News’ Washington bureau chief and the moderator of “Meet the Press,” died Friday after a sudden heart attack at the bureau, NBC News said Friday. He was 58.
Russert was recording voiceovers for Sunday’s “Meet the Press” program when he collapsed.

great guy.........great author......great fan of the Buffalo Bills.
God Speed Tim.
-
He was one of the only newsmen I trusted to give an honest opinion and not take one side or the other. Sad stuff..
-
His job was to take the opposite side of a politicians viewpoint and get that person to open up about their views. He was objective and able to get many people to talk about their views so we as voters could make an informed decision. He will be missed. Godspeed Mr. Russert; your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.
-
I'm very sad to hear that. I did like him perhaps more than any other TV personality. :(
-
The old ticker... yep, he was one I watched some. Thought he did a better than most job of it.
-
Tim wrote a wonderful read about his relationship with his father. It's one of my favorite books.... making it especially sad this father's day.

wow.
bummer.
:(
-
The political discourse in America just became much more shallow.
-
Wow at 58
First thought is what the heck happened? Did he have a heart issue, was he treating something or what...that's just too young for such a talented guy.
Sad, he had just come back from his son's graduation
-
:(

:salute
I always liked the guy.

...
-
I liked the guys style. You could tell he was one of the good guys, a proud American.
Lastly, I admire the way he lived his life, to the fullest.
<S>
-
The few times I watched him he seemed to take a true journalistic neutrality of opinion and concentrated on factual reporting. It was refreshing to see in a swamp of media mediocrity that we see most often.
RIP.
-
Not to be a downer but if you look at his cheeks in that photo above you can see they are flushed and pink. That is a sign of poor circulation. Not blushing as some of you may assume. My brother had a 98% blockage of one of his arteries and displayed the same signs! We were fortunate in when his heart attack hit we were only 2 blocks from the hospital.
These symptoms don't just appear in one day, they are usually present day to day but most people don't know how to recognize them.
I didn't agree with Tim on some things but i liked to listen to his perspective. May he now do commentary for the angels above. :salute
-
What Johnny Carson was to late night comedy, Tim Russert was to Sunday morning talk shows. Many will try to imitate him, but there will never be another one. Unbelievable.
-
:salute
-
I rank most journalists slightly above the filth they cover but Tim Russert was a guy that showed how a TV journalist act. Unbiased and going for the truth.
-
cronkite lives.
:noid
-
I would rank Tim Russert slightly above Walter Cronkite. But just slightly as they are both great newsmen. Cronkite stood out among a lot of good professional newsmen in an era when reporting the news as you saw it not as you wanted it to be was the norm. Now almost all journalists want sensationalize the news. So simply by not being one of the herd I put Russert a little higher.
-
Tim Russert was always the consumate journalist. He was tough and even handed. If he had any personal agenda (other than the Buffalo Bills) he never let it show on air. He will be missed.
-
Very sad to see him die, he was one of the best political reporters on TV, he just seemed like a reall nice down to Earth kind of guy.
I wonder who they'll get to host "Meet the Press" now.
-
Just watched a large portion of his memorial show on the Today show and one of his colleagues Dr. Nancy Sniderman (sp?) mentioned that one thing she will miss is him asking "Is dark beer ok for me?" She said her response was always.."In moderation Tim, in moderation." The man was well liked by those that worked with him and those that he interviewed.
-
Too soon. Too soon.
-
You'll be missed Tim Russert. :salute
-
Way too young. He was one of the good guys.
-
he was a regular guy who made it all the way to the top in an industry that usually hires only pretty boys and girls...a style over substance philosophy that he busted through. Buffalo did not lose a voice.......Buffalo lost ITS voice.
Go Bills !!
-
hate to see anyone that young die but....
It is laughable for you guys to say he was anything but a left wing democrat hack. Granted.. he hid it well about half the time but it was obvious where his sympathies were.
I really have no respect for any of the talking heads that I have seen.

at best.......it's a side note to his life and body of work.......irrelevant to me.
-
pretending to be something you are not (fair and even) is not a "sidenote" to a life's body of work and is indeed relevant to me.
It kept me from watching the guy as it keeps me from watching all the talking heads.
I would 100 times rather listen to an admitted right winger or an admitted left winger than russert or the current crop of phony talking heads all pretending they have no agenda.
lazs
-
It kept me from watching the guy as it keeps me from watching all the talking heads.
then unfortunately....it also kept you from many good interviews .... including some where he ripped dems to shreds....
I still think there was a lot more to like about the man.........what he held important........and the way in which he talked about it....
his politics aside...he was a good man...and a good american. I urge you to read one of his books......
-
when I seen him rip democrats apart it always seemed it was because they weren't fighting the good liberal socialist fight well enough.. hardly the same thing. I could not avoid seeing the guy from time to time but every time I did it left me with a bad taste.
I don't know the man at all.. to me.. all he is is his politics... what he says. And that part.. just made him look dishonest and wrong. What he held to be important were liberal socialist ideals so that would mean there was nothing for me to like. I also think that the only good American is one who is a constitutional and minimalist government one so.. "good American" did not apply to him so far as I am concerned.
Like I said.. I do not wish a death on anyone but the fact that he no longer is interjecting his politics on people while claiming neutrality is... a good thing.

Laz could have the best character judgment I've ever seen. If I were a business I would want him in HR hiring my employees......NOT
-
Lazs, admit it. Unless the interviewer pulls a gun and shoots a democrat you consider him "a left wing liberal hack".
Russert was an excellent moderator that treated both sides of the fence equally.

Agreed. Russert seemed to be one of the most neutral people in regards to politics. His excitement for politics often rubbed off on his audience. He will be missed.
-
it amazes me that people are ignoring the content of his character .......as a human being and american......and choosing to talk about what party he belonged to. because that's the real story with tim.
the guy came from nothing.......and ended up making something of himself. he came from a dark damp depressed town called buffalo new york.....his dad fought the good fight in world war two.......and he put himself through college by booking bands...and then into law school. all he ever talked about was the importance of the church in his life........and loving his family deeply.....
first and foremost....those are the things I think about when I think about tim russert... he was a good american.....and he knew what that meant. I could be biased......because my story is EXACTLY the same......except after law school I stayed in the entertainment business....and he went into politics and then media. perhaps it's something you can only appreciate if you come from buffalo.......but I hope not.

male stripper?
:D
no........that would be wolf blitzer ;)

when I seen him rip
You, Lazs, are an idiot.
Tim Russert, :salute. An example of class that will be sorely missed.
-
After listening to his son on the Today show, by any measure of success Russert was at the top. It takes a strong will and a big heart to raise a son as well spoken, level headed and loving as that kid. Russert did the important things very well.
-
no........that would be wolf blitzer ;)
:rofl
i think i'm gonna puke!!!
:rofl

LOL.. you do notice that the only people here who get all wet and gushy about how "fair and balanced" he is are the total slavishly liberal here.
zeta.. I don't know if he is a "good American" or not.. any more than you do.. your father serving in WWII does not make you one. acting like the bad guy in an Ayn Rand novel does not make you one. going to school does not make you one. What about him made him a "good American" to you?
I think that you would call the contestants on american idol "good Americans" too based on your value system.
You can't talk about if a person is a good or bad American and then say his politics are off limits. I fail to see any reason to like the guy. No matter how many liberals cry over his death.. it doesn't make him more of a good American. the reptile man carville wept openly over the death. that should give you a hint.
lazs
-
Laz I don't think anyone can compete with your ego.
-
In your case that is probly true. either that or you just don't know how to pick your fights.
You will notice that there are threads I stay away from. It is because I know nothing of the subject or it holds no interest for me.
Those things do not seem to deter you tho.

noted omissions of several points of key criteria I mentioned, such as family and church nothwithstanding....your logic, assumptions & reasoning process are so flawed & biased here that I don't really know where to start........and frankly.......I don't care to.
to me.. all he is is his politics... what he says...lazs
your above quote tells me everything. I judge a person by their actions....and not their words...that seems to be at the root of our differences in this matter as I see it.
-
I find it interesting that all of the politicians who had been interviewed about Mr. Russert, to tell their experience being interviewed by him...not one of them mentioned being unfairly treated by the liberal bastage....
lol
All of the ones that were interviewed stated that if you weren't prepared to answer any question about any statement that you had made in your career - you were dead meat ... he was equal in his tenacity to all political parties ( laffed my arse off watching some of the replays of Ross Perot interview... Ross had such an ego ) he took it very seriously to be fair with all guests, but let them know well beforehand that he would ask all the questions that people wanted to know --regardless of political affiliation... sure he made some republican politicians squirm...and democrat politicians too... he wasn't biased .... granted he may have had a big city democratic mindset.. especially using his father and his father's buddies to bounce ideas and reactions off of ... but making republican candidates squirm because they got caught in a lie or misstatement doesn't make him a liberal.. it makes him a journalist interviewer....he was doing his job... and a heck of a lot more believeable that most of the other interviewers on TV these days ....

zeta.. my neighbor has a wife and kids and goes to church I think. I don't really know the guy and would not be getting all weepy about what a "good American" he is. How the hell would I know? You didn't know russert at all.. He was a talking head with a liberal socialist viewpoint that he kept fairly well hidden.
How this makes him special or any more of a "good American" than you or me or the neighbor down the street that I really don't know.. well... this escapes me.
He was good at his job and hid his political agenda fairly well. He was too young to die. His arteries were clogged to the max I heard.
He recomended resteraunts too... I don't think I agreed with his eating style either.
lazs
-
Lazs, it's just sad that you choose to push your personal bias in a memorial thread about a good man that has been universally praised by those he interviewed. Too bad you will never get it. You've lost just about any cred you've had.
-
Geez Lazs, you ride the line here almost as a full time job. Somehow the Skuzzmeister just ignores your posts or something.
Slamming a dead guy, wow, that's just brazen of you. You must be a really tough guy in person.
-
Not that laz needs any defending. If thats his opinion of russert, thats his opinion. It's not like he's calling the guy a baby killer or anything. He just said the guys a Lib and he most likely was. C'mon they guy worked for Mario Cuomo, don't think many conservatives worked for him.
I'll say this for Russert he showed the least bias than the rest on NBC,CBS or ABC.
-
There are democrats, and then there are Democrats. Tim Russert once worked for Tip O'Neill, arguably the best and most respected Speaker of the House in the last three decades of the twentieth century. There's no denying that Russert had liberal leanings, but if he had a particular axe to grind it seldom showed. When it did, it cut both ways.
-
and that is my point.. the guy had liberal leanings but he did a fairly good job of hiding it most of the time.
I am not slamming a dead guy.. I am saying that I am sorry he is dead. I will be more sorry if they replace him with an even more clever liberal.
At the end of the day tho.. I won't miss his liberal slant on things.. no matter how well he hid it.
There are some really good conservative talking heads out there .. if one dies I don't expect the liberals here to say how much they will miss his barely hidden conservative agenda and talk about how "fair and balanced" he was.
I am the one here seperating the man from his politics..
Sorry to see such a young man die.. I am not sorry to not have to listen to his mostly well hidden liberal politics anymore.
I am being honest when I say that his form of pretense really bothers me.. I would far rather have a know and admitted liberal and a known and admitted libertarian or individualist both be on a panel and do cross interviews than his particular form of dishonesty.
To say that he was not quite as bad as some of the other phonies is not really getting it for me.
I never knew the man.. he was probly a good guy.
lazs
-
I never knew the man.. he was probly a good guy.
lazs
I did...and he was.

If you really did "know" him then... my condolences.. I have lots and lots of people that I interact with... I don't really know very many of em.
