Wonna duel?, go to the DA., want a fair fight? go to the DA...
Pickers, Vulchers, Runners, I wear the labels with pride, as do many of the other pilots in here.
One tactic isnt flown to the exclusion of another, we roll with the punches in here and do what is neccesary to survive, SO all the whiners (and I wont risk this thread to point out the obviouse names/sigs.) save up all your finger pointing, and try to fly smart.
That said, My favorite merge tactic is to dive a bit before pulling up in the vertical, turning into the nme whilst pulling throttle, and raking his cockpit....This works most of the time if our energy states are similair, and is pretty sneaky if done correctly.
The point of diving into the merge is to set your opponent up, he thinks you are gaing E to Make the fight vertical, and you convince him of this by pulling into the vertical just before the merge, the trick is pulling throttle all the way back momentarily to gain the edge in turning radius, in his attempt to do the same he will more than likly give you an even better shot .
Ok tell me what you think, and pass on any tricks/tactic you might have...underhanded or not I ultimatly respect the guy that gets me, unseen or otherwise <S>ROOKS :aok

Ya know Stephan, I haven't died yet in over 10 years of flying fight sims. I'm invinicible!
What I take pride in, is a decent fight against a good opponent. I'd like to think that folks know when they see that low 38G that it won't run, shoot em in the face on the merge or hide in the horde.
But hey, if you take pride in thinking avoiding the fight matters, then you go for it sir. I hope you have a grand old time of it :aok

I'd like to see a film of this working. As near as I can see, if you pulled that on me, you might get a fading shot as I went vertical, then had my way with you. But what do I know? I'm just the real Steve whilst you are just a poor man's stephen. :aok

I do this merge every time I'm co alt and Co E with an enemy in my 38. Dive down a bit to gain E, pull hard vertical up and around 180 degrees whilst chopping throttle and popping flaps. Usually gets on the enemies 6 VERY quickly and I can control the fight most of the time from there.
The merge is courtesy of Pawz. :) :salute

Like I said, sounds like you might get a fading shot, maybe even a good one in a 38. But if you've chopped throttle and the opponent zoomed, how do you control the fight from there? Seems to me like he'd be perched above you with a lot more E. I could be missing something though. :)

While I appreciate your comment, I'm afraid you may have taken me a little too seriously. Sometimes, I talk smack for entertainment to pass time while I'm heading for the fight again. As an example, you are talkng about a HO'er in a nik named Anakkin. He said he got 7 that flight, and I said, "WTG, even if ya HO'd me." I shot him down the next flight:
then said: (http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d191/AZC4guy/anakkin2.jpg)
Anyway, you didn't hurt my feelings as I'm just goofin around, killin time. I don't mind enthusiastic exchanges on 200 at all, although I have noticed that some people take it very seriously and even remember a smack talk exchange far down the road as if they were somehow wounded and carrying a grudge.
I enjoy it when someone gets going and gets in a couple of good lines, even when I'm the target. A lot of times, that's all I'm looking for, a little wit in the exchange to have a chuckle at. I don't profess to be good enough at this game, or in need of some kind of self affirmation, to take it so seriously. So feel free to smack me around on 200 any time you feel like. all I ask is that you try to put some zing in it so we can both have a laugh. :aok

ill add my worth less $.02
if you use the same tactic, well what is there to say about that? im sure you can figure that out.
you first off should not be thinking about it, it should become instinct, and you should be able to adapt, to what ever situation is happening, with out thinking about it.

The reality of this tactic is that if you in most American plane's (or any boom and zoom'r for that matter) facing a better turning fighter, you will get one very decent shot only at your opponent.
The prospects of getting another will probably be low as your nme's turn fighter will get the next angle on you, forcing you to dive away...
Somtimes combat is about making the most of that 1st merge, and getting a shot on the nme before he can hit you,...<S> just a passing fancy guys, keep it coming. :aok
-
If you are in a faster BnZ ride, you most likely hold the advantage in the fight. Use it, don't run away like a chickenshit. Fights aren't two dimensional, be creative but above all be aggressive. One halfassed attempt and run is just weak and not good tactics. Who makes this garbage legit these days anyway?
-
On the merge I am usually able to pull off a quite magical move that puts my enemy directly on my six. If I am unable to achieve a secure 12 o'clock position, I immediately auger.

Try that against anyone who knows what they're doing and you're toast.
You'll be raking nothing but empty air whilst your opponent maneuvers behind you for a 6 shot that they can take whenever they like since you have handed them a tidy E advantage by pulling such a move.

You just answered your own issue.
If you think you'll get beat in the horizontal, chances are your plane performs better in the vertical (zoom or climb rate). Therefore, you DO have an advantage, and it is one that will give you infinitely better shots than the lame HO you described in your initial post. As Stang said, don't run because your plane doesnt win on a 2d plane. Think 3d, and you will be surprised how many rookie pilots you can down, regardless of how good a "turning fighter" they are in. Heck, they probably all will try your same HO move on you, too.

Problem is if the other guy recognizes what you're doing, all they have to do is go vertical and extend their zoom as much as possible and you won't be able to do squat other than hang stalled out below them, ripe for a belly shot. By chopping your throttle and pulling hard into their attack, you're burning E and if the guy goes up (I prefer a spiral climb for this) you will not have the E to match his climb for a shot but he'll be able to stall you out. YMMV.

Agreed, but more often than not I do not have this happen to me and 2 things happen can happen instead: 1) They continue on a straight path after the merge and just extend, with me on their 6. 2) They also pull a hard merge like me and we immediately get into a turn fight.
Granted, I know which planes to do this merge against, and which ones to not. I sure won't find myself getting slow for a Zeke or a Hurri, thats for sure.

In this thread alone, there are at least 10 really awsum sticks giving some pretty good advice. I won't even pretend to say i grasp all of what the truely good sticks try and teach.
But in the time that i have been playing the one thing i know for sure is that I don't know how much I don't know.
There is no out of the box answer for anything in dogfighting and every time you think you have something down, someone will make a monkey of you. I'd rather fly the DA then MA, I want to dogfight, fight being the key word here. People in MA that are only concerned with getting kills by any means are missing out on alot of fun actually learning to fight.
But hey, it's your $15 so have at it. It's a game and games are ment to be fun :salute
-
My only move on the merge is to try and get under and slightly to the right of oncoming bogey. When said bogey is 1k away,I pull stick back to my oversize gut,and kicked hard left rudder.Depending on the bandit type and pilot skill,I end up behind bandit or with bandit coming at me for his ho shot. That's all I got.Been playing flight sims a long time, and I win some and lose some.I've been beaten bad by a lot of superior pilots with my one and only move, and I tip my hat to their flying ability. The ones I manage to defeat,I tip my hat to them as well.I can't lose them all!

And I thought I was the only one that mastered this maneuver. I wonder what would happen if two masters such as ourselves were to go against each other.
That, sir, is a recipe for a collision! First one to chew tree bark wins :salute
Also, this statement from yanksfan grabbed my attention
But in the time that i have been playing the one thing i know for sure is that I don't know how much I don't know.
I don't think I want to know how much I don't know. I am not good, but if I play regularly, and am patiently aggressive in the fights, I can usually give a decent battle. I think that using 1 move all the time is a mistake, since no move is unbeatable (is it?), but I usually fall into a typical pattern myself. Can't seem to help myself, usually, merge, vertical, spiralling turn fight that ends up with me in a flat turn trying to get some E so I can climb a bit in the turns. I usually am shot down right about this point.

If you seek out some of the uber sticks you'll find most of them are more then willing to help you, Fighting in the DA or the TA with these guys will improve your skills without you even realizeing it. You'll get your butt kicked in a thousand different directions, but you will definitly get a grasp on how much you don't know. You'll learn alot, you'll have fun, you'll make new freinds and you'll understand why these guys laugh at those who play the game with the "get a kill and land it at all cost" mentality.
As SkyRock once told me "The fun is the fight". There is no shame in looseing after you have tryed your best.

Not to contradict you, Sir, but I was shot down by you twice last tour by ho shots on the first merge. I don't mind it much (after the fact), but to be honest, we all do it, even if it is only on occasion, we might not remember or notice; even though I try very hard not to. Like you I take pride in a clean merge and trying to gain a win by gaining an opponents six (I get shot down alot :D).
I like the fight, shooting someone down is just gravy. There are two times one can expect me to ho , if I am low and slow in a p-47 or I am out numbered more than two to one. Salute to you and the other doggon p38 pilots, you guys throw those buffs around very well. I have come to expect a ho shot on every merge in every arena, and I am pleasantly surprised when it doesn't happen, which is rare indeed. :salute

Shh Guppy, you'll give this guy the impression that this ISN'T real life.

I suck but I have advice for you. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that if there's a good pilot working a praticular area of the map, just stay away. Pick another target with your P-47 and level bomb it, then run like a schoolgirl to land before any enemies show up. If you do get caught, do everything you can to HO the enemy. Also, do not ever try landing on a carrier.

Improvement comes with playing time, which i do not have. Lucky when I can get in 10 hours in a tour. I am expecting that situation to improve soon (moving closer to my place of work), so I'll be able to actually get a bit of time through the week.
Truth is, I don't really want to "improve" by getting shot down over and over in the DA. In those situations I either get frustrated or nervous or both and really don't get much enjoyment out of it. The old dueling ladder was fun, but I didn't have a lot of time for that one either.
Right now what I really want....is to be a top notch torpedo dropper. :)

That tells me that most people you pull that on ... don't look back when starting their zoom ... I always look back and it would take 1 second to realize what your doing and then causing me to continue my zoom all the while watching for your first sign of stall ... and then drop down on you like a rock with 4/6 .50 cals blazing.
Checking your 6 in a zoom, after a merge, will also easily defeat Stephen's "trick" move too if you have an equal or E advantage.

He posted on ... March 31, 2008 ... and then his next post was ... May 26, 2008 ... wasn't that around the time that Stephen Waldron got whacked with the PNG stick ?

I guess you haven't been to the DA lately.. No such thing as a fair fight, there.. Everyone hoes, everyone picks... Where have you been??

Thanx for the input guys<S>
In response to several posts id like to make clear that no manuever is a silver bullet, and that wasnt the intention here anyway.
The best leason ever taught to me was by a fellow newb in my 8 player days,
I would get on this guys six, and he would weave twice, throw me out in front of him, and just saw the arse off my plane everytime., he pulled me aside for a couple mintues and taught me how to scissor, really laying the foundation for many a nasty trick.
Now that the DA has become a suedo training arena, its a source of pride to see so many older pilots getting on 200 and trying to instruct the guy they just shot down how to defeat a particular move that was used against them.
The compitition in the MA has gotten alot stiffer over the years, owing alot to pilots trying to help each other out over 200.
All's im saying is help each other out, it makes the game more fun, and as the skill level comes up I figure more realistic tactics will follow making the MA a bigger and better party.
I think this thread is all used up so once again thx for the input, Laters :aok

Dunno man, I've pulled this on a number of good sticks and I've never been caught dying at the outset of the fight from a stall. Granted, I might not have won the fight in the end all the time, but usually it just boils down to a turnfight and the skills involved with that.
-
The compitition in the MA has gotten alot stiffer over the years.....
no offense, but my experience has been the complete opposite.

I have to agree with pluck. If the competition had improved, I wouldn't be able to get kills so easily. That being said, I do agree that better opponents make for better game play. :aok
-

I agree, when the good sticks are on, I get a decent fight out of it - however I do fly mostly tank town (as anyone knows) since our map will never change, I do get into some good fights and horrible ones. Honestly if you do want a good fight and know whose in the area, call him out for a friendly duel, LTARazor, Betty, Grim, 1BadShot are just some of the names I can say that will put up a great fight win or lose will give ya a salute in the end. Really not all fights need to be at 15k, you need that kind of advantage time to ask a trainer for some help. I fly around 10k as I have been trying more and more to get myself in a "bad position" right off bat and try to get myself out of it. I think what most lack really is defensive BFM as being at 15k+ They have no real defensive strategy and rely on the offensive alt/speed to get them in/out of trouble.

It doesn't matter where you start. All fights end up on the deck.

Allrighty.....
, as previously explaind my name IS A8Popysd in the MA.
Geez had to go and pull out the old thread 38 VS 190, Pride makes my mouth run like a faucet....lol
The explination for that is alot of guys refering to 190 pilots as cowards, pickers, and generaly having less skill than pilots that prefer 38's.
I fly the 190d9 alot, so I took alot of comments personaly.
Anyway I stick by those comments made in that other thread, though in hindsite I should have kept the personal refrences to a minimum.

Apologies stephen ... there was a guy, who has since been PNGed, that had the same avatar as yours and his Forum Id was Stephen Wadron ... that is where the confusion has come in.

Not true. Fought HT once (many moons ago in a sim far, far away) and the fight went UP. That was some funny stuff. :D

Well, Im not sure what you mean by that. But in 2001, Air Warrior, Relaxed Realism European, you were in your pony toying with three lower cons, and I came along high in my 38 and popped you in your zoom. After which you repeatedly called me a cheezy f***er :lol But I hold no grudge :)
