It's indeed a wind tunnel. It's a research facility, the "Luftfahrtforschungsanstalt Hermann Göring" in Völkenrode near Brunswick. That facility was built in 1935 and ended operations in 1945. After the war the compounds hosted an agricultural research facility, the "Bundesforschungsanstalt für Landwirtschaft Braunschweig-Völkenrode" and  the "Die Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt",  the national institute for natural and engineering sciences, particulary meteorolgy.

The facility had three tunnels, A1 (completed 1937) had a diameter of 2.5 -3m, A2 (completed 1939 but only operational from 1942 on) was a high speed wind tunnel for testing parts and models of rockets, missiles & jets, and  the giant A3 (depicted above, completed 1940) with 8m diameter and speeds up to 350 km/h.

That looks like a 109 B or C?

It is an early model B109E as the B/C had a much deeper oil cooler/radiator and no wing radiators. The B/Cs had 2 bladed props while the 109 in the pic has a 3 bladed prop.

Looks to be a Bf.109E-3. Wing barrels look a bit thick to be MG17's, which IIRC the E-1 and E-2 had. Also has the lumps in the wings for the receiver/ammunition drum, definitely looks like MG/FF's. And it's not an E-4 or E-7, the canopy is different.

Mostly correct; the US forces took LFA on April 1945 and many of key scientists were transfered to USA. However, the Brits took over the LFA summer 1945 and the remaining organisation continued under British controll as MAP Volkenrode; they translated German research material to english and some test facilities were disassembled and sent to GB.

Edit: Forgot to add that there were more than three tunnels, at least up to A9 but some of these were small.

Those weren't 109's - they were Messerschmitt Bf.108 TAIFUN's (Typhoon) - a 4 seater communication & liaison aircraft.

Actually not 108s but Pilatus P-2's

108s filled in for 190s in the Longest Day.

The aircraft in Indiana Jones (3rd Movie) were Arado ar96 trainers, I believe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arado_Ar_96

Although these Pilatius aircraft look pretty similar at the casual glance.  You could convince me!

bf108 Taifuns were used in The Longest Day and Von Ryan's Express as bf109 stand-in's.

All my opinion of course.

See, now why can't we have 23 pages threads on cool stuff like this rather than a squeak off about who DA'd who to death?  Focus is way off.
Awesome posts guys, it's always impressive to see how deep the knowledge pool is in this community.  :aok

Go watch again :)

The rear of the cockpit was the giveaway for me.  Not an Arado although it would be an easy mistake to make

Yep. The canopy is a serious distinction.  I looked at some other photographs of the Arado and it has the distinctive Arado vertical stabilizer and rudder shape which of course in not present in the movie.

It's pretty close to the P2 from the spinner to the windscreen tho!   :D

Nice ID on that one Guppy!
