Damn Junky you just lost 10 points of credibility with me.    In all honesty, how can you actually like that crap?   The "music" isn't even made with instruments.

Last time, I checked synthesizers were instruments.  So Van Halen, and most bands from the 80s had one guy in the band that "didnt play instruments".  Thanks for sharing Junky...could have done without Birdman.

I'd like to be a "G" but if I said the 'N' word, I'd get capped.

Everyone has their favorites. This isn't mine.

I like something a little 'friendly-er'....

I fly to that song too (have the original and remix on my ipod). Rap and jazz is the best music for me to fly to. Lately I've been listening to Lil Wayne and The Roots. Check out this one, listened to them quite a bit in the last few days

Saw The Roots one month ago and they were nothing short of amazing. They've got great musicians who really know how to entertain a crowd. They played for over 2.5 hours straight. They wore me out. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.  If you appreciate good music and love REAL hip-hop go see these guys.

Seemed like pre-Jimi Hendrix to me. Ever heard Stevie Ray Vaughn's Little Wing?

I'm gonna show 2 versions of it, 1 with music only, the other with the words, it's a GREAT song!

First one is one of my favorite songs of all time. IMO, he did it a whole lot better than Jimi Hendrix...

SRV is an amazing guitarist, probably the best there ever was. Nothing better than a good guitar solo...especially live.

I just hate when Rap music gets categorized as all one entity. Unfortunately, the only stuff that gets played is the garbage they put on the radio. I have been getting more into artists like the Roots who rarely talk about how much money they have or what kind of cars they drive. They play their own instruments (They have a tuba player whose nickname is Tuba Godding jr.). These type of artists aren't widely known or get very much radio play. I don't expect everyone to like Hip-Hop, but it kind of bugs me to see people not experience the 'good stuff'.

I saw a video of some Rappers visiting MLK Jr's grave with their 2x to large shirts and their pants around their damn ankles.. I wish they'd have enough respect to dress up, wear their hat normally, or not backwards, or not at all, and show some damn respect. Especailly when they talk about "earning it"

As much as I dislike RAP music, it is all that some people know. I don't mean that offensively either. Kids that grow up in neighborhoods like East LA and Compton grew up on this style of music and no matter how you or I feel about it, it's not wrong or ab-normal. To some people, 'normal' is different from what you think it is. A sports jersey and certain brand of jeans IS dressing up to some people. A certain players jersey, crisp and clean, IS being respectful in some areas of our country. Just because you, or I, don't approve of it, doesn't make it wrong.

Your entire statement is dangerous. You may not understand it or even know how offensive this statement could, and probably does, come off to a person who falls in the category of "they" but you should be looking back at yourself and asking what your motivation for posting a statement like this is. It's mentality like this that causes unfortunate and un-necessary situations, no matter how unintentional. Think before you react so candidly. :)

Have you received your "Day After Day, Night After Night" book yet?  I got mine a couple of days ago and can't believe the amount of research Hopkins put into it.  Every day of Stevie's life that is documented is recorded in this book.  Simply amazing.

There are only a few rap songs that are worth listening to:

1. Boy Named Sue, Johnny Cash

3. Hot Rod Lincoln, Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen

can't think of any others off hand.

Most music is rhyming to a beat. To me music of almost any form  is poetry. Basically, the only difference between music and poetry is the fact that music uses instruments.

To say that being a rapper is easy.....oh please. Everyone that says that makes me chuckle. Try freestylin and make it sound 'fresh'. It is by no means easy at all. One of my friends has a studio and I tried it myself and I sounded ridiculous. Few can master the craft to be lyrically relevant. Jay-Z in my book is probably at the top of the list as far as rappers go. Ill post a link of Jay-Z in the studio and you'll see how talented this man is. This link is with Jay-Z, Rick Rubin, and one of the guys from The Beastie Boys.

Wrong. XM, Sirius, Music Choice have 4 or 5 rap stations in which one is classic rap. I'm sure in some of the bigger cities there is an old school hip hop channel. The hip-hop channel I listen to plays an old school song one time per hour. Check your facts.

Derek and the Dominoes were better on Little Wing.

"Remakes" only go so far.   "Rap" today is just samples and changing a few words.    When I was younger I listened to 2 Live Crew, NWA, Ice-T and others, but they at least wrote lyrics.   Not the crap that floods the market today.

MTV killed the generation after mine.   This was proven during Pink Floyd's performance at Live 8.

That's a song I indeed like (99 problems),

But...

I listened to the "original" and it was horrible.  The REASON I like that song is that Rick Reuben got involved and produced it.  He turned garbage into gold.  That's the thing about most rap.  It's the person producin' and mixing it that makes it "good" or "bad".  The artist is secondary.

What a horrible thing.  The rapper is not as important as the producer.  I DO see the "art" in it, but I have a hard time considering a rapper a musician when they are not as important as the person who is mixing/producing it.

So we'll cal lit "art" 'cause it ain't "music" per. se.

There is a difference.

It's poetry. Whether you like it or not most rap is poetry. Last I heard poetry was an art form. Most music is poetry. Lots of Bod Dylan's songs were basically poetry.....he wasn't a great singer at all. His lyrics (what we could understand of them) were powerful and that's what earned him his legendary status.

Alot of unfounded comments about rap in here mostly founded by ignorance.  I don't see a point in trying to get someone to like your genre of music, but I'll never understand people's need to bash it especially with comments like "it all sounds the same" and "it takes no talent" or the best "they aren't musicians".   Alot of the stuff on the radio now isn't a good comparison but isn't that always the case??  I know alot of revered/talented singers that can't play a instrument or read music if their life depended on it...does that make them not musicians?  Is the mortar layer that never "took a class" not a mortar layer even if he built the Sistine Chapel?

Let's hear your rap and see if anyone listens to it.
