Congressional approval is so low, that now they are considering yet another round of rebates.
They don't even want to wait to see what effect the first stimulus package has on the economy! ("It appears that it does seem to be helping, but it might be yet a bit more time before we fully understand the extent to which additional stimulus may or may not be needed.''--Ben Bernanke)
I'm not sure this is a good idea...
It's starting to feel "Welfare-ish".

Sounds like a bribe to get their approval rating up...pathetic.

My $1200 didn't help the economy, it's sitting in my wife and my bank account gathering dust.
-
Yes...another $600...just enough for gas and grocery's for the next two weeks!!
-
My sister got a rebate check. I didn't. When she asked why, I told her that she and I didn't pay any taxes.
She didn't follow my line of thought.
-
What is wrong with them giving people back their own money? It is only wrong if the person getting the money never put any in in the first place.
I would like to see everyone get back most if not all of their tax money.

bush tax breaks were to help the economy, the democrat tax breaks are to get re-elected and then they will raise taxes.

Well hey, I'd take the money from either crook too...
It's just that after the check is cashed and the loyalties are determined that I'd rather it be the crook that makes it easier for rich people to stay rich, instead of the one making it easier for poor people to stay poor.

You really think that this proposal by the dems is anything other than an attempt to get their approval ratings up?

Was the $500 Bush check anything different?
Personally I'm against any sort of tax breaks right now.. this country isn't in any position to be giving back extra tax money and that goes for the last $600 cut as well. I voiced my opinion against that one too. I just find it very funny how some of the same people that praised that tax cut are now bashing this one.
-
I got a big fat zero from the last GWB sponsored rebate, so I'm guessing I'll get a big fat zero from any Dem sponsored one.
Actually, that's not true. If Obama wins the election, I'll be paying for any Dem sponsored rebates.
God I wish the GOP had found someone better than McCain.

You should be all for tax cuts. The optimum tax rate is something like 23%, thats the point where the government will pull in the most revenue. (That's an overall tax rate, including hidden taxes). We are well over that, iirc we are at or very near 50% overall tax rate.
-
I'll give Congress one point higher on my approval rating of them if I get another $2100 check. You bet.
I'm still not voting for the Commu-socialist of Islam, Obama.
:aok

Well I personally think we should do away with the IRS and have a straight up flat tax on earnings. However no one is ever going to do that, it's one of those campaign promises that never happen. I seem to remember Bush making that exact promise in both of his campaigns but of course he never came through with it. The super rich would never let it happen because then they would have to pay their fair % based on earnings.
That was one of the things I was looking forward too under Bush even at the beginning before he turned to total dog poo. The onther was more funding for NASA which he side stepped on through his first term but finally came through in the second. Which oddly enough is one of the things I don't like about Obama, is he plans to cut NASA funding.

Bush can't set the tax rates, ever. Not unless he disbands Congress. It is Congress's job to levy taxes, all Bush can do is ask for it. (Dunno if he did that or not, but it's all he can do in the matter.) The super rich already pay far more in taxes than the rest of us in sheer dollar amounts. They pay far more than the rest of us in terms of % of revenue that the government brings in.

We need to re-animate JFK so he can give his little-known tax rate speech again.

Indeed, and they use little to none of the government programs they largely fund.

I pay taxes too and I don't use any govt aid programs, other than the basic services we are all provided.. IE luxury of a police force, fire dept paved roads ect..ect.
It's simple taxes are based on what you earn, if you earn a lot you should expect to pay more taxes. If you make 10 million a year, yes you likely will get owned by the tax man. However consider yourself lucky you were born in a country that gave you the ability to earn 10 million in a year. I don't think many of the super rich would have made their millions & billions living in Hatti or other less fortunate places.
They made their riches because of the opportunity provided in this country, so they should expect to pay their dues just like anyone else.

The true scary part was that McCain said he fashioned himself after Teddy Roosevelt. Any conservative who has studied history has just toejam themselves. So it's either a socialist-fascist, or a moderate socialist fascist. Take your pick.

No, the dems complained... then cashed their checks.

Every dime the US government is denied is one less dime for them to piss away on programs to get themselves re-elected, I don't care how it happens

Because Nancy Pelosi and Congress have an averaged approval rating of 9%...
WASHINGTON -- A soured public has given President Bush and Congress record low approval ratings in the latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll, underscoring the toll taken by fretful economic woes and long-lasting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The survey, released Tuesday, also set a new AP-Ipsos floor for the number of people saying the country is heading in the right direction. Just 16 percent said the country is moving the right way, a virtual tie with the 17 percent who said so last month.
In addition, 28 percent said they approve of the job Bush is doing, tying his low in the AP-Ipsos survey, set last April.
Congress fared even worse: A new AP-Ipsos low
Corrected your figures with truth.
One bad apple apple fans the other.

I don't believe anyone on this board has ever said the rich shouldn't pay taxes like everyone else. They can and do pay. They pay much more than the rest of us.
Moray, you didn't actually give an approval rating for Congress.

This is the tag-end of a week in which my wife had to take a lot of guff from my wealthy, sneering, condescending, urbanite in-laws. I would gladly raise the tax rates on one obnoxious, pretentious, greasy, leering, lecherous, cigarette-in-one-hand-martini-in-the-other, little brother of my wife, to 90%.
I will NOT bless them with my presence during the holiday season this winter, lest he become a statistic, and I end up in prison...
As you can see, at least in regards to them, my views on upper-class tax rates are "evolving."

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/menu/cy2003.guest.html
Read that and tell me you don't think they pay enough.
"The Top 50% pay 96.54% of All Income Taxes. The top 50% earns 86.01% (2002: 85.77%) of all the income.
The top 50% were those individuals or couples filing jointly who earned $29,019 and up in 2003.
(The top 1% earned $295,495-plus.) The top 1% earns 16.77% of all income. The top 1% pay over a third, 34.27% of all income taxes.
Americans who want to are continuing to improve their lives, and those who don't want to, aren't. "
