Well, my old cell phone has completely taken a dump and it looks like its time for a new one. I was curious if any one here has the new LG Dare for Verizon and whats their thoughts were on it. I watched some reviews on Youtube but would like to hear an actual person's opinions on it. I know the camera is far superior to anything else currently on the US market but I was curious as to the texting capability (is it hard to get used to; not really easy to use or what) and the overall functionality of the touch screen since I know it uses pressure touch instead of the electrical sensors like the Iphone. If you had to give the phone a rating from 1 to 10, 10 being the highest 1 being the lowest what would you give it?
-
the LG I bought was the utter worst POS I have ever owned personally.... it was a flip thing, the screen cut in and out after less than 6 months, 4 weeks to send it in for repair. the speaker for the ringer and speaker phone stopped working right soon after (I never did spend the $$ and time to send it in). about 1 year in I accidentally dropped a foot or so getting out of my car for the first time seriously (I never drop my phones) and a part of the back a thin little lip chipped. Turns out that little chip stopped the battery from falling out. I spent the next year scotch taping the battery on. That "repair" even with the "insurance" was $60 and the phone had to be sent to china or whatever 8 weeks.
the last 2 months before my contract ran out I left it sit on my bedside table all day and once a day checked my voicemail / returned calls on a blank screen while holding the battery on (I used this as my main phone, I don't have a land line).
Sorry Ethan, but I will tell everyone I can how utter $%^& LG phones are. It was the worst I have ever owned. Personally I SWEAR by Nokia phones. Oh yeah the reception was HORRID, I lost signal everywhere. Nokia I have a signal everywhere, the battery lasts days at a time, and is rock solid. I baby my phone as it is all I have, and I tell anyone I can get a Nokia.
<EDIT> BTW I use it ONLY as a phone, I have a candybar type, all I care about is making and receiving calls, my work supplied HTC Tilt does all the fancy stuff for me.
-
Sadly though as I am a Verizon carrier I don't have a whole lot of options besides LG other then samsung which hasn't come up with anything that really wows me lately.
-
I don't know how you are stuck with one carrier, I'd suggest looking into others. if you don't want to post in general PM me where you live, city, and I'll check into other carriers with good signal there. My company uses ATT because they gave us a deal which turned out to be BS, but hey, ATT doesn't cover some major cities.
Personal Cell was with US Cellular, I was with them 9 years and left because of crappy phone choices. Yes I left great coverage and good service because of the crap phones they offered, it sometimes has to happen :aok
-
I like LG products.
Every single one of them I've owned has worked flawlessly
From Cell phones to DVD players
-
Its kinda hard to believe but I really am stuck unless I want to pay for my own plan and coverage. Mi Papa is happy with the verizon service and hasn't ever had any problems with it. Also because of my dads company he gets 20% off Verizon stuff.
-
I think Im gonna make a trip up to the Verizon store tomorrow and see what the have in stock, I normally just order offline but since Ive never had a touch phone before I wanna make sure its not inconvenient or unpractical.
-
I am doing the same as you Husky. My two year contract is up and I am looking for a new phone from Verizon. I like Verizon because they seem to have the best plans for their price. I bought the original LG Chocolate when it came out and really liked that phone, dropped it and never had an issue. However my chocolate ended up at the bottom of a lake, luckily for me, I had insurance on it and got a replacement, the replacement was disappointing. It was a refurbished chocolate and was of lower quality than my original.
So I like LG Products overall.
I too have been looking into the Dare, I think I will wait a few months when the price goes down. I bought the Chocolate when it was brand new for the same price that the Dare is being offered for. Personally I like Samsung's touch screen phone more than the iPhone or the Dare, however Sprint's cheapest plan is $69.99 which is $30 more than what I am paying at Verizon.
I went to a store and they didn't have any on display or in stock, however at a local mall they did have some, and the sales rep was willing to let me play with one, but when he asked if they had any in stock they didn't. I will definitely get my hands on one before purchasing one.
-
env2 looks cool. Friend has one, likes it.
-
I was gonna wait for the price to come down but my phone absolutely bit the dust so I don't have much of a choice to wait, luckily I get 20% so it wont cost me to much. When you where playing with the Dare in the mall how did the touch screen act was is nice and responsive or a little hard to use? Also did you play with the texting keyboard at all?

I didn't get to mess with one because they were out of stock, I plan on going back before making a purchase.
From the videos, I don't think I would like the texting keyboard very much, I heard the Dare had sensitivity issues, but I even had issues with the ipod touch, and I have small fingers. One feature I think looks interesting about the Dare is the notepad feature, you can draw letters and numbers and it will detect what you wrote. I read that it had fast recognition so you could write a word quickly, one letter on top of the other, and it would recognize what you wrote. But like I said, I'm not going to trust it until I try it out for myself.

Too bad you couldnt retreive it.
My daughter forgot to take her Chocolate out of her pants pocket and ran it through the washing machine. Where it sat overnight.
We thought it was toast. But a friend of hers suggested removing the battery and burying it in a container of rice for a few days.
I thought it was a waste of time but I figured rice is cheap and she really wanted to try it. So I let her.
I'll be damned if it didnt work.
3 Days later she plugged the battery back in and its been working fine ever since.
That was 3 months ago.

Here anyone who wants their salt to actually pour out when they use the salt shaker, rather than be faced with a clumpy glob of unpourable salt, puts rice in their salt shakers.
Works great.

it's not the dare, but the guy i used to work for uses the verizon LG's for his tow truck drivers. he has 9 of them, and they seem fairly rugged. only one driver seems to manage to kill it on a regular basis..........

This phone will eventually fail. When it does, rest assured the the washing machine incident is the cuplrit.

I have Verizon and the cell is our only phone since we travel constantly. I have had good luck with the Samsung and Motorola phones. I have two of the less expensive motorola flip phones with a camera. Both the wife and I use them all of the time. The camera is kinda flakey but we got them as phones, not toys or gadgets so no big deal. They have been working fine for over 2 years each. I never buy the insurance. I've never needed it in over 6 years of cell usage and 2 companies. Our contract was up in May. I'm waiting to see if they get an inexpensive qwerty keypad phone out. My Daughter in Law likes to text us quite a bit.
-
I pay $14.76 including taxes for my Nextel. I love it. I also enjoy telling cell phones salesmen/women "I'm not interested" ad nauseum. Eventually, they'll "try to wear me down" and I ask "How much a plan for what I have, would cover?" They'll usually respond "That would be our $59.99 plan sir. Would you like to sign up today?!" Their smiles and dollar sigh eyes turn to sheer rage when I tell them "I pay $14.76."
I actually had one cat try and get pissy with me. "Sir, you could have saved us time and told us." I responded to him very stern, but attentively: "I did, you were more concerned with a sale that you ignored my "I'm not interested. Instead, you're now mad at me, because you saw commission and thought you would get it from me."
:devil

Unfortunately for me, I do NOT like LG products.
I had a LG CRT (15") back in the 90's, the screen was dark even though I had contrast and brightness at the max. I soon sold it and bought a better display.
I thought I'd never buy an LG again, well the girlfriend brought in a DVD-player.
The DVD-player soon got fried and the blue smoke that keeps the electronics running got out, and the LG smelled like ozone (burning electricity)...
I do think that the mobiles are of better quality, but I wouldn't know as I've been using Nokia for the last 12 years (before which I had Motorola).
-
I've had Verizon service for about 5-6 years now. The only phones I've had were Nokias, the "candy bar" style. My first one was 4-5 years old last year when the Camaro crushed it. I bought one off of ebay for $15 and Verizon was able to swap all my stuff over to it. My battery outlasts everyone else's, and my reception is better as well. My phone goes on for hours after others quit, and it'll get a signal and get out where others won't. Yes, it is a crude, simple, cheap phone, with no camera, no trick ring tones, and no gimmicks. But it is a great PHONE. My old phone is in the shop, they're fixing it for $45 (the display crystal cracked). I'll have a spare in case I kill my newer one. I found a place online, www.cellphoneshop.net, that has all sorts of parts and stuff cheap.
-
400 dollars.... :rofl
-
I bought the HTC tilt (AT&T) and I really like it. Only downfall is that you either have to use the pointy stick or the tip of your finger. Think there might be the dialing where you talk into it but I never use it. Other then that, I really enjoy it.
Also AT&T is the only wireless carrier that has a signal where I live. I tried the other local wireless companies and they all had no signal for a half mile from my house.
-
My wife and I have been using Verizon for 10 years now. Always LG phones. The only problem we had with a phone is when she decided to get a Samsung. She had to return within a month and decided to get another LG. 10 years of LG's, 0 problems.

Virg, when I worked at Office Depot my Nextel rep called those "candy bar" phones "monoliths". LOL

I have the LG Voyage and I like it. The LG Dare looks slimmer though.
-
I used LG 8100 for four years without a problem and then took advantage of the 'free every two' and upgraded to Blackberry 8330. :D I still have the 8100 just in case.

In college when I worked at Batteries Plus, I saw quite a fair share of cell phones in my day. From my experience, LG is a pretty good brand. Never saw any reoccuring problems when customers brought in their phones thinking it was a battery issue. Motorola's can be hit or miss IMO. I've always been a Nokia man myself, but my last phone has be second guessing them. My wife has used Sony Ericcson on her last two phones, but I doubt she'll get another one of them. But she literally just wears the phones out doing about 5000 minutes a month.
My last phone was Nokia 6101 flip phone, last about 16 months. The volume was quite low as compared to other phones. I use my phone maybe 300 minutes a month and one day I noticed a crack near on the plastic cover near the hinge. 6 hours later my phone was in two pieces. So I had luckily saved my old Nokia 3585 candy bar phone and have been using that since. Other than one glitch on the alarm on that phone, it's a tank, going on 5 years IIRC, just replahad to replace the dead battery (after sitting for nearly 2 years).
I've come to learn, especially from customers, that less moving parts the better. Flip phones slamming closed can loosen wires in the speaker and the antena. Think about how many times you open/close your phone. Slider phones are even worse for durability. Average use of a phone, say 1000 minutes a month, will get you about 1.5-2 years on a cellphone battery. Heavy users like my wife, probably a year. If you get 4-5 years, you probably applying for that AARP card :)
The slimmer and more sleek phones become, the less durable they are. You have to realize that a lot of people are using cellphones as their only source of a phone. Being as mobile as they are and the abuse they take, construction of a phone is very important.

I just bought a blackberry curve 8320 im in love with it, but before i had my reliable razor of 2 years, thankfully orange(phone company) service is not to expensive :)

My kid just bought one...she sleeps with it....it's like the presidential aide with the nuclear football :rofl (her plan allows 1500 texts per month to NON Verizon...usually comes in about 1200--'qwerty' keyboard) We live in a fringe area, and any LG phone we've ever has sucked arse, which made me leery of it, but it works as well as my Razor for reception
-
Can't beat this for reception.

i see a lot of peeps talking about RAZRs in this thread.....well...i thought i'd share my opinion.......They SUCK! The get service almost anywhere but other than that..they suck.

There are more Razrs in service than all other cell phones combined. They have excellent reception at a cost of charge life and ultimately battery life.

I got to play with a Dare today. The touch screen is different than most touch screens, you have to press down on the screen, so it would require some getting use to. The scribble pad wasn't as nice as I thought it would be, instead I would prefer the keyboard or the abc pad. Most of the numbers or letters I put in worked fine, however if you let pressure off, it will create a gap in the letter/number and may recognize it as another. It recognized one of my 2's as 17 because of this.
I messed with the QWERTY keyboard, I originally thought I would have trouble with it, because I had trouble with the ipod touch's keyboard. However it gives you ample room on the keyboard, I was able to type with my index finger and thumb without pressing the wrong keys. Albeit, the ipod touch keyboard is fancier in that it pops up when you turn the device on it's side, whichever side. It has a button you must press and it will come up. I really like the Home Key on the Dare. Overall it has a nice layout, I like the upgradable memory option which is not available on the iphone. Also it has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, which I absolutely love. IMO that was the downfall of the LG Chocolate, it didn't have a standard headphone jack. Most people didn't use the Chocolate for it's mp3 playing abilities because it wasn't easily accessed.
Overall I liked it and will probably purchase one within the next few months, may hold out until September for a birthday present to myself.

I’m not sure if the “Dare” has this, but the “LG Voyager” has a ‘touch to unlock’ feature that has it’s pros and cons about it.
LG Voyager lock/unlock feature Pros & Cons.
- Pros: It allows you to have the phone in your pocket w/o accidentally calling someone.
- Cons: Every time you receive a call it is locked & when someone buzzes the gate at my apartment I have to unlock to answer my phone, unlock again to use the touch screen keypad to let them in.
I hope the LG Dare made improvements.
-
The keypad should unlock when there is an incoming call. This may be an option from the preferences menu.
-
Nope, from what I’ve seen in the “touch settings” it only gives me a “lock” or “unlock" option on this LG Voyager.
-
I just got an LG Shine. It seems pretty solid and the camera is very nice. Doesn't have a touch screen though so I can't comment there.
-
I gave in and got a Dare today for my Bday, it is a fun phone. The Music playing abilities are wonderful, and I love that it has a 3.5mm audio jack instead of some crappy special cable like my previous mp3 capable phone. The Music playing quality is really nice as well, and very aesthetically pleasing.
Some of the online reviews I feel were too harsh on the Dare as far as it's sensitivity goes. First thing I did was calibrate the touch screen and haven't had an issue. It is different from the iPhone in that the dare you lightly press down on it. The cool functions like drawing pad and hand writing recognition aren't good with fingers, but I use a pen as a stylus and is is wonderful. I was afraid the touch screen aspect would be difficult to get use to, but I felt as if I knew what I was doing as soon as I picked it up.
I don't think I understand the camera yet, although admittedly I have not messed with the camera too much yet. The battery life is really good as well. I am afraid to go on the internet using the phone because I do not understand how charges for that work out, it use to use minutes, but I would hate to go on thinking it used minutes and it charged per mb or something.
Thus far I am pleased with it, but will keep you updated if any problems occur.

My friend has one. It has an antenna that you can use to browse on the Intardnet, and watch TV.
