Title: LOL, Talk about a real Scam
Post by: angelsandair on July 29, 2008, 09:16:38 PM
Look at this lawsuit.

Quote
"We are satisfied with the judge's decision," Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley told Reuters. "We feel that although the case is without merit and we proved that in court, we also believe the settlement is right for our customers." Well duh. Some 800k Ford owners and lessees file a class-action lawsuit against the Blue Oval Boyz for lost value– due to the whole Firestone/Explorer rollover deal– and FoMoCo gives them a discount towards the purchase of a new Ford. We're talking certificates good for $500 off a new Explorer, or $300 off any other Ford, Mercury or Lincoln product. Oh, and the plaintiffs' lawyers get $25m. Hang on. Say half of those people buy a new Ford. Excluding Ford's own legal fees (which are probably part of their normal overhead) and the discount itself (as usual), the marketing cost for those "disgruntled customers'" sales will cost Ford just $62.50 each. Given the money to be made on trade-ins and re-financing… Call me crazy, but this class action lawsuit thing sounds a genuine business opportunity

:lol WOW!

What you see above can only be described by one word, owned.

But it really kind of sucked for these people. Like 250 people were killed and 3,000 were hurt.

Because Ford had put the wrong tire pressure in the cars. Tires were perfectly fine.

???

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firestone_and_Ford_tire_controversy
Many outside observers tend towards blaming both parties; Firestone's tires being prone to tread separation and failure, and the SUVs being especially prone to rolling over if a tire fails at speed compared to other vehicles. A subsequent NHTSA investigation of real world accident data showed that the SUVs in question were no more likely to roll over than any other SUV.

because it wasn't firestone's fault.

ford had a problem with the ride of the exploder....it wasn't "cushy" enough for soccer moms. they decided it was due to the tires. they mandated a lower pressure than firestone did, which was lower than was safe. this gave a better ride, but now the tires were flexing way too much, and couldn't dissipate the heat generated by high speed driving. this combination caused the tires to seperate, and blow out.

i'm sure that the lawyers that handled this "shotgunned" and sued everyone that could've remotly had a possibility of being at fault.

firestone tires were not prone to tread seperation any more than goodyears or BFG. they seperated due to the unsafely low tire pressure mandated for these vehicles by ford.

I've found sources saying that the NHTSA tests were done at the 32 PSI, not the actual 26 PSI Ford said to use, but I cannot find sources where tests were done at 26 PSI by another agency and their conclusions.

The PDF file in the Wikipedia article is broke that lead to the NHTSA report.

i have worked at new car dealerships for the past 40 years, all car mfg "recommend' lower pressure to give a better ride, when i prepped a new car or serviced a car i set the press above the mfg recommened at what i knew what was the right pressure.

of course the owners never check their tire pressures, most don't even read the owners manual.

but you can't sue the owners or auto techs because they don't have any money.

i've always checked tire pressures as part of my service.

i set most cars to 35psi......light trucks the same.

my personal truck is set to 40psi all around. it gives me almost 2mpg more. i tried that on my geo, and almost lost a couple fillings.
my fairmont is 40 in the front, and 20 in the rear(nitto drag radials)

Most people don't even know how to check the date stamp on thier tires much less the pressure.  Is this surprising?  No, it gets into their Starbuck's time.

Eh, my dad used to be a mechanic, he always checks the tire pressures before he goes to work. (Just to be safe)

Most idiots dont even know how to plug a hole in their tires. A friend of mine, his parents would just buy a new tire any time there was a hole in it. Now, I fix em up for 10$$ for each plug. :rofl

well, i wouldn't call em idiots. it's not their job to know how to plug a tire.

the only knowledge i expect to see is that the driver can check and add their own oil, keep tires some semblence of properly inflated, and not run out of gas.....ooo.....and coolant topped off. that should be basic knowledge to drive.

other than that, if you want to know how to do it, more power to ya. if not, at least ya know some basics.

morethan a scam, it's actually a friggin brilliant marketing strategy. it might not be right, but they're doing what they have to do to keep customers. and make money too. and they're keeping them very very cheaply.

Kinda like the Bronco owner that lost control at 85mph and successfully sued Ford?    Also, most rollovers of the Explorers happened at speeds above the M+S rating of the Firestone Wilderness ATX's.   Most don't check their PSI's, but I guess tires should not have to be checked by owner's, let alone going over temperatures that are out of the margin of safety.

Suing them and getting a mere $300-$500 certificate is more or less something of Shannon Faulkner going to the Citadel, to only drop out within the first week.

I had a rear tire blow out on my ford focus the other day.  I got lucky that I was in the bank's parking lot when it happened.... But I will say this it does suck when your tire blows out.

that was a bronco? i trhought it was one of those old aerostars? heard they were well over 120mph, on bald tires...one blew out, the car flipped, rolled, etc etc, andc the survivors sued ford and won.

they were being sooo stupid that to call them stupid would insult stupid people, and they got rich off of their stupidity...and a slick lawyer.....

i think that was also why ford started governing some of their fleet to 120mph.(although i'm really not sure about that one)

That sounds like the same settlement that GM gave to the owners of the pickup trucks with the side mounted fuel tanks a few years back. (Remember, the tanks that would leak and catch fire in a side impact?)

I had a 78 Chevy pickup and as my settlement I received a coupon for (I believe) $500 off of a NEW GM product. The value of the coupon also depreciated if I did not use it within a specified time period.

The lawyers were not paid in coupons back then either.

lawyers love class action suits, the plaintiffs get a few bucks and the lawyers get rich.

You know what I like about my Jeep?  It came with Goodyear tires that has a little sensor in them that is tied to my car.  Whenever the PSI on any tire goes below 35 PSI a little light on my dash turns on letting me know one of my tires is under inflated.  The only downside is that I have to buy these specific Goodyear tires.

anyone can buy the sensors, the cheap one just go on your tire valve, the more expensive one are installed inside the wheel. They are wireless and you have a meter inside your vehicle. You can also have them on a trailer if you tow. Beats checking tires with a gauge.

There are law firms that mainly go around looking for class action suits where the people they are representing basically get nothing any the law firm gets like $25 million.

I see those commercials all the time, think the law firm that does them here in L.A. is called Binder and Binder Law Offices.  Whenever I see that name, for some reason my mind sees it as Bender and Bender Law Offices and of course this is what I picture they look like.

it's in the engine control computer. the computer randomly shuts down different injectors, thus limiting the power output.

try this.

reset all of your tires to 40psi. then reset the monitoring system. i think it won't go off unless one of them goes low.

i also though that the jeeps used the abs system to determine this, rather than dedicated sensors?
