Me and Falcnwng had a nice little convo tonight in the LW and I just wanted to post publicly that the guy is a class act.
Much respect from me to you.
:salute sir.
-
I think you really have to meet someone in person before you can decide how 'classy' they really are. There's women hacked up in people's freezers who met 'classy' guys online then talked on the phone only to become hamburger meat and a trophy lampshade when they finally went to visit him.
-
i would have to agree...Faclnwng and i got into it a few weeks ago and we went to the DA. We had a great time and we befriended on another :salute
-
I've met people online who I figured for freaks only to meet them in person where they turn out to be really good people. I've also met people online that sounded really great in chat, but in person turned out to be flaming bungholes on a Popsicle stick. I would just caution against public "warm fuzzies" of adoration until you actually belly up to a Sports Bar and have a beer with the person....Unless you like the taste of crow. ;)
-
wow, you mean someone doesn't judge a book by it's cover on here??? :O :O :O

Covers no...Behaviors and actions...yes...
-
The guy didn't have to say what he said, nor do what he did.
Those "actions" spoke loudly to me.
(*starts playing "Goodbye Horses" and breaks out the lipstick*)

You think people judge you because you're a pothead when in fact they really judge you because you don't know how to behave in an acceptable manner for any length of time.

No BS, you were one of the cool, mellow heads when I joined up. Ya got an edge to you now...everything alright? Not that I'm flying over you while yer in an Osty. :D

I've just had a lot of time off work lately for medical reasons so have had more opportunity to think of entertaining things to post, which is my real goal, to entertain. You'll know when I'm being serious it'll read like my Plane/Player Dynamic post... ;)

Over the last four years, I've always had respect for Falcnwng, although we have had our differences in the past. Always fun to wing with him and listen to his corny jokes. <S>

No doubt, I am just pointing out that publicly admitting nonsexual man-love for someone judged purely on the basis your internet interactions with them is probably just a tad presumptuous. The internet is a lot like driving a car as it can have a transformative affect on personality. The most mousy secretary can turn into "Attila the Hun" behind the wheel of a car in heavy traffic. Or, your most burly construction worker can become as docile and tentative as a kitty cat...
-
Human intuition has usually served me well. Zazen, you must not have anything better to do in the real world if you choose to cast doubt in other's minds about who they consider to be good aquaintances/friends, and who not to trust. May I point out that every day there is invariably something in the news about a crime someone committed against another person they trusted face to face?
Falc has never exhibited any behavior to cause me to doubt my friendship with him. End of story.
-
(*starts playing "Goodbye Horses" and breaks out the lipstick*)
Dammit Lute... *snatches* that back from you before anyone has a chance to use it. I paid like 15 bucks for that. Stop taking it.
Falcnwng, I don't care if he thinks you're a class act or not. I just want the lipstick back.

Falcn who?

I've nothing good to say about him.

Just wanted to explain why you have the reputation you do in the AH community. You seem to feel that we are judging you by the "cover of the book" when in reality it has been by your actions that you've gained the reputation of being a dumb arse in our community. Have a nice day.

Lots of hijacks...jeesh.
I have PM'ed (on the BBS not in-game) FW a few times and he has always been courteous and has shown honor. Then I found out he was CO of the BOPS, and then it all made sense.
While I'll never fly bish, you folks are lucky to have him and his squad, and yes---
He IS a class act. :salute So are the BOPs :salute
(<----Grubles to himself over fact that there's probably not enough Shiner Bock, Single Malt Scotch, 2" thick sirloins, and lobster tails on the planet to bribe FW and the BOPS to fly knight :(

I'm not saying you can't be in virtual man-love with someone you've never "really" met. The man-love you have for Falc is no doubt real, pure and genuine. All I am saying is to keep it in perspective. Unlike someone you meet in real life and hangout with. There's the very real possibility the person you express deep man-love for online can be a completely different person than your very limited range of mutual expression and interpretation online would otherwise indicate.
It would be kind of like calling a 1-900 sex line and chatting up the girl then deciding based on her kind sexy voice, the tender and compassionate way she talks to you and her gentle eliciting of erotic feelings that she would make a good wife...In reality she's probably a 350 Lb chain smoker with 8 kids sitting naked on her sofa eating Cheetos from the cavernous abyss that is her cleavage...
That's half the fun of going to Conventions...The "shock and awe" factor of realizing people were, in your imagination based on in-game chat, absolutely nothing like they actually are in person. This happens in both a surprising good way and an, "OMG this guy is a complete turd muncher, I can't believe I worshipped this freak and humped his ankle for 5 years", kind of way.
-

Good Gawd Man, that's a visual I didn't need...I think I'm gonna hurl...
I've only been flying with Falc as a BOP for a short time, and he's a stand-up guy.

That's great Jeff...
I'm not saying Falc isn't deserving of anyone's internet man-love. Judging by the heart-felt posts here he is indeed a veritable "magnet" for deeply profound and mutually gratifying man-love and I have no doubt he is very deserving of that kind of affection. I'm just saying, especially for the younger folks, that online relationships are based on only a minuscule fraction of the information about a person that real life interpersonal relationships are. To lose perspective of the fact that this makes it very likely your opinion of a person online is almost entirely without "real" underlying substance can be potentially dangerous...This isn't about whether Falc is worthy of being man-loved over the internet or not. It's just a general cautionary message that could apply to anyone, you, me, Falc, the pedophile down the street, the guy with the lampshade made from his internet girlfriend's skin etc...

Holy crap Zazen!
Did the Jennifer you met online turn out to have a pee-pee or something?
The way you keep ranting on about this subject makes me think you had a bad experience or something.
Who cares?

No, I am just getting tired of seeing my grocery store's, "Missing kids", wall filled to capacity with hundreds of youngsters who ran away from home to meet a "great guy" and "special friend" they met online and were never seen or heard from again until one day their decomposing body parts wash up on a local riverbank.

It really is difficult to get a picture of someone based entirely from internet activity. The internet user provides little snipits of information to you, fashioned to provide a picture they've tailor-made. The huge blanks that you fill in are ones that you yourself have to create based upon the little snipits.

BINGO! Winner-Winner Chicken Dinner!!!
It's just like trying to distinguish objects in the dark. Your brain is a pattern recognition machine. In the dark you think you are looking at a rabbit, in the light you realize it was a rock. In the absence of real information your brain auto-fills, from a mixture of self-projected desire and memory, the rest which creates an illusion. A man dying of thirst in the desert is going self-project his desire for fluids and see every distant sand dune as a watering hole. Just as kids who live on the internet, lacking in real interpersonal relationships, are going to see every "nice guy" online as their real world "best friend", which can be really creepy, spooky and dangerous...

I drove to the convention In Indy with Mike and Tony <CDog> from Maryland.Thats a LOT of time spending with someone so I think I can say better than anyone on this forum that Falc is one of the best people Ive ever had the honor to meet from this game in person.Hes right up there with Hajo as far as level attitude and respect for others.]
I would bet alot have more of an issue with the sheer size of the Bops than certain members.

If the horse fell in love with a mare it met online and decided to hook up with it, then there is a chance it is dead.
Otherwise the Zazen's horse named "Look at me, I hijacked this thread" is probably alive and well...we shall see.

I didn't hijack it. I just took the opportunity to use a thread with no actual substance other than a personal puff piece from one player about another to espouse the inherent dangers of trusting purely online relationships...Especially for kids...If "hijacking" is taking a thread about an online relationship to talk about online relationships in general and it means I potentially see one fewer child on my grocery store's, "Missing kids" wall this Saturday when my wife and I go shopping then so be it...I'm guilty as charged.

Yes, it was a hijack. Go ahead and TRY to justify it (you are good at that).
Here's what Lute said:

As far as the game and this BBS goes, Lute thinks Falc is a class act. I get lost where you think it is necessary to point out the dangers of judging someone based on what you know about them from an online game. Why not start another thread if you find it so important?

I know Falcnwing Personaly. We've met in person at the 2K AW con and talked on the phone many many times.
Lute....you are right. He is a gentleman.

I've flown for Falc for 4 years as my CO. If he wasn't a great guy with the utmost integrity I would not. Period. Zazen, on the other hand, has been an bellybutton in-game and on the boards ever since I can remember. There's some of that man-love you seem obsessed with Sweetie. An bellybutton is still an bellybutton no matter how he tries to dance around with half bellybutton flames. Grab your balls, be a man and just say you don't like him. Quit being a wuss about it.

Mike has always been a good guy. Sure him and I have gone back and forth at different points. But we both know that it is in the heat of the moment and not personal hated. BoP's will know this is fact and no "underlying or hidden theme" exists.
Meeting some of the guys in the BoP's this year in Dayton, has SEALED my friendship with the BoP's. Not to mention, I enjoyed participating in HotDog's Memorial flight, I chatted with about 50+ BoP's at the same time and laughed my arse off constantly.
:salute Falcnwing. It's GAY FRIDAY MOFO!! More importantly, :salute BoP's.

Who exactly am I flaming? I never commented at all about Falc personally or anyone who wuvs him, to be honest I couldn't care less. That's not my concern. My concern was the message that Lute's post conveyed in general that a few hours of online chit-chat is all it takes to make a definitive determination about the true character of a person (any person including myself).
There are a lot of kids in this game and on these boards and they are all potential victims of online seduction in one form or another. Even more so than most kids, because the ones on here are more likely to substitute online relationships for real world interpersonal ones. I would have used any thread of this nature as a cautionary tale, no matter who it was about to try to enunciate this point. It seems like everynight on the evening news you hear of a women or a child that has fallen prey to an internet psychopath who "appeared" to be a wonderful person. Only an illiterate moron would confuse this general, "Public service announcement" type message with some kind of fictional, personal, disparaging insinuation.

I disagree to an extent. I've met over 120+ total AH'ers. Not one bad one in the bunch so far. I have winged with the The Flying Circus, 80th, BoP's, AoM's (have to do that one soon), False Prophets (hell, we would spew so much crap at each other, but now, we're close friends), CH's and Silent Executioners (Nghtmre, badger8). They're all friends to me and they would probably come to the same conclusion.
I get a ribbing from my squadmates for switching at times. But, I sometimes get tired of being on the large stack and will switch to wing up with friends who are on the "short stack". This game to me after 6+ years of playing, is more about the cemented friendships. Hell, I've never met Hajo and offered to get him a ticket to see the Funk Brothers up here in Ann Arbor. I've never met Haj, but ANYONE who has met me at the 2003 or 3 weeks ago at Scott's, knows I treat folks with the respect they deserve. That respect is akin to treating them as a friend and it has been reciprocated. I never met DaPup in my life, but we clicked instantly and you would have swore we'd know each other our entire lives. Same with bmathis, same with SkyRock, same with Forker, same with the BoP's, Most Wanted and anyone I come across.
Why? It was the way I was raised. Treat others kindly and they will treat you kind.
-
why don't you put a sock in it. :aok
In what? Your mouth? :aok
btw....nice contribution to the thread :aok

Absolutely, I am not trying to say every person behind the voice is a pedophile or a psychopath. I have no doubt the vast majority are not. But, it only takes one psychopath to kill a kid, and the other three hundred good folks that turn out to be exactly as they seem online won't be able to bring that kid back to life...So, by all means, especially if you're an adult, entertaining the notion that people on the internet are truly who/what they seem to be is probably reasonably safe. But, don't assume all of them are, because I promise you they aren't, if you don't believe me do a Google search for 'Missing persons" and read the posted facts of their disappearances.

Gentlemen what we are witnessing here is the work of a true Hero!!
A Champion of those unfortunate souls not blessed with the intellect to tell the difference between good :pray and evil :devil
So children (and morons) everywhere, heed his wise words and trust not your own judgement, for it may only lead you down the road of ruin and peril.
It is truly heartwarming to see such concern for the worlds children.
But Alas, I am afraid that poor Zazen will suffer the same fate as many great heroes who came before him, and we shall never see a " Zazen is a class act" post on these (or any) forums.

Did you not read Zazen's initial hijack of the thread?!?!?!?!
You CANNOT determine that Zazen is a "true Hero" based only on what he posts here on the BBS.....jeeze!
Promoting such things can cause someone to be sadly disappointed, or even worse....

If it was a 'Zazen is a class act' thread we have to ask the qeustion, would the comedy routine we see here have been repeated in a self depreciating way or would infact the comic have taken the compliment and thanked the poster? Does a tree in the forrest that makes a noise still fall down if no one is there to plant it??

Actually, I am about to be a father for the first time and I find myself getting increasingly sad and upset when I see what happens to kids. My motivation for my public service spiel, far from any kind of quest for hero-ship, is just an outward extension of my growing protectionism for my unborn son who will be in this world shortly.
-
heartfealt congrats zaz to you and your misses, enjoy your last minute of freedom :)
oh wait sorry, 'deactivate man love sentiments now'

Thanks Bat, it was now or never. I didn't want to be wearing "depends undergarments", gumming pureed fruit while my kid was still in High School.

It's tragic I'll admit, but I prefer to think of it as Darwin's natural selection theory in practise. Parents who don't teach their children about how the real world works (and the diff from the virtual world) shouldn't have offspring to perpetuate the bloodline. It's just too bad it's the kids who have to suffer first.
-

I've been a dad for 9 years & counting. I see the same exact news as well. But, what are we to do besides enjoy life, raise and educate our kids as we see fit, and do the best we can to protect them without trampling on thier childhood? Like it or not, adverse things do happen- to kids, adults, you name it. We parents do the best we can, and that's all anyone can possibly ask.
Now that I've helped y'all stray off topic, I'll shut up.

Since you think you are reaching so many of the at-risk youngsters in this thread, on this BBS, maybe you should put out another PSA warning kids that wasting time playing an online game or reading post from an online game BBS is bad for them.

Just squandering free time with fun-loving frivolity is the luxury and priviledge of youth. It won't potentially cause them to end up as some sick freak's lampshade...

My motivation for my public service spiel, far from any kind of quest for hero-ship, is just an outward extension of my growing protectionism for my unborn son who will be in this world shortly.
Congrats Zazen!!
Believe me, as the Father of 5 boys, I can relate to your worries.
But I think that even "my" parents had concerns that would at least equal the concerns of parents today.
But I can't figure out how you felt that interjecting your worries into this particular post would be relevant.
You could say the same thing in almost 50 to 60% of the posts in here.
Why this one?
I hope you enjoy the company of your children as much as I have mine.
And I'm sure you will.
Good luck "Future Dad", You actually WILL be someones "Hero" soon. Enjoy!!
Your Pal,
Boner

Wow, I couldn't even imagine 5 boys, I'm nervous about one...lol
I used this thread because it was not a discussion, it was a simple statement of fact regarding an internet relationship. So, discussing in general the potential danger of exclusively internet based relationships seemed appropriate. Without my well-meaning cautionary tales and responses to them there would be no discussion here at all. There's nothing else here but people sounding off in roll-call fashion with their opinion of a player...That alone is a big <YAWN> as far discussion threads go, so no loss there...I at least tried to make my posts entertaining to read as an incentive. ;)

I think my squad believes I'm a lunatic of some sort but if they actually met me in person they would realize that they'd be chopped up into little pieces for dogfood distribution before they could form a valid opinion. So don't be too quick to judge!

Well , while we may not see "eye to eye" on the reasons for your interlude into this discussion, I still wish you the best of luck with your future friend and "lawn mower".
Cya up there,

I really wish I was half as clever as people give me credit for on these forums. I'd be like James Bond or some super-spy CIA agent inciting rebellions and installing puppet regimes... :rofl

I've met people online who I figured for freaks only to meet them in person where they turn out to be really good people. I've also met people online that sounded really great in chat, but in person turned out to be flaming bungholes on a Popsicle stick. I would just caution against public "warm fuzzies" of adoration until you actually belly up to a Sports Bar and have a beer with the person....Unless you like the taste of crow. ;)
ummmmmmmm..... flaming bunghole :devil

btw bat, my apologies for the other night, I was not in good spirits and had just heard that crap form twitboi. :D
:salute
PS -if you want to put that mess to rest, we can still go best out of 10! :devil
I took it with a pinch of salt Mark, no worries man :)

Ive met quite a few folks in the 13-odd years Ive been playing AH/AW (had a nation-wide job for 6 years) Met Kak3 (not nearly as wound up in person as here :))...met Abdul from AW...great old hippy guy who worked for IRS, even had a top 40 song in early 80's (I'm afraid he passed away from liver issues).... Met Lobo3 (retired Air force gent)and his wife Max, great folks...met RapidRem (who had quite a few names.."Glint"..among others)...New Jersey cop...lives in Maryland now....prolly a couple more I can't remember, haven't been disappointed yet. Ya chat with folks enough in game (not so much in here) ya get a good idea of who they are

God, I hope not. Although some of his freakouts in AW on Gamestorm were some real all-time classics. We used to say, "Uh oh! the "Kaka" has hit the fan again!" :rofl

WmLute has always been someone i respect and i felt the BBS had gotten too personal and vitriolic for my taste so I Pm'd him and had a great conversation...I was relieved to leave it feeling he was an outstanding person who didn't take my posts personally. Thanks Lute :salute
Zazen I was going to PM you as well, as I felt things were getting out of hand. If you are willing I still will. Im sorry that you are upset...but hey sometimes it goes that way. You just hadn't been on when i was lately.
Im feisty on the BBS and in the game sometimes...i love opportunities like going to the da with banshee to clear the air...Banshee was the superior pilot that night :salute
To all who posted nice things thank you :aok
