If you kids remember, I posted "That's what I'm talking about" Post.
In the post, I told you one of the main reasons gas was going down was due
to less consummation...but nooo a lot of you disagreed.Well, here's the facts:

We are using less fuel....WTG America!! Keep it up!! Let opec eat that oil!! :aok

Demand goes crashing down when the price goes up?
That means normally that the demand wasn't that necessary, but based on the term "cheap"

Good point!

Oil necessary? I thought all you needed was love? ;)
-
Raise prices high enough, fast enough and demand goes down. It's the law.

Which followed a the largest rise in oil prices in probably just as many years.
Yes Oil is dropping.
But is the price of gas dropping at the same ratio as it rose when oil prices were going up.
I havent looked it up but Im betting...probably not.
-
Demand drops because people can't afford gas, so they are more conserving. Gas price high because of the "artificial creat of gas sortage" by sending them oversea.

I always knew that regular, super, and midrange was artificially sorted.

even w/ demand drop as the biggest mark int he last 26 years? yet they still make their BIGGEST record profit

Duh!!!!!!!!
8% profit on $4.00 gallon gas IS more than 8% on $2.00 a gallon. Of course its going to be higher. [or whatever the percentage of profit the oil companies get, which isn't as much as the government's take]
-
Oil comapanies are not the problem... Gas and oil at their currant prices are not out of line.... It just looks that way....
Our dollar is weak..... The Federal REserve is sticking it to us... They have been doing it for ever.....
You can still by gas at around 20cent a gallon if you pay will silver dollars... Problem is not many people have deversified in silver over the years......
-
Honda Civic GX NGV soldout due to high gas prices. It runs on natural gas and is cleaner burning then electric power!
Oil? What oil?

i was one of the "nay-sayeres in the other thread......
but i have to admit, i've been noticing different driving habits. women in suv;s aren't giving them up, but rather driving them much more conservativly. there is less traffic in general. i'm seeing more of those vespa scooters in my area(cherry hill nj). hell, i've even been seeing a few of those teeny weeny smart cars. you know...the ones that fit in the bed of a pickup truck.
i watch the pumps out in front of my shop. they were pumping about 8,000 to 10,000 gallons a day. they're well under 8,000 gallons a day now. it used to be that the pump guys were running constantly from when i got in at 8am till at least 6pm with very little break time. now it's very slow, with sparodic rushes.
sooo...yep..you were right dude. my apologizies............

The price of oil fell the day after the monkey ...errr president, lifted the ban on offshore drilling. Every day since, with more and more debate on drilling, alternative energy development, etc... the price keeps dropping.
On the world stage... with china shut down for the olympics and US demand falling due to conservation, prices keep dropping... despite the Georgia pipelines being closed down, (BP Operation) prices are STILL dropping.
Lets see what happens a week after China lets those cars back on the road...

Heres the bad news...I'm in the automotive business...Prices for trucks and SUVS were at all time low at the auto auctions.
You could buy trucks and suvs so cheap at the auctions. It was the largest drop, we in the bizz have ever seen.
It was so bad that Dodge and Chysler stopped running trucks and SUVS at the auctions because they were losing so much money.
Guess what....they are up $2000 dollars more in just a few weeks ago. errrrr supply and demand

WASHINGTON -- Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is considering legislation that would permit new offshore drilling as part of a broad energy bill, a response to growing anxiety within her party that Republicans are gaining traction with election-year attacks that Democrats aren't doing enough to address high gasoline prices.
One proposal under consideration would let states decide whether to permit new energy exploration off their coasts while possibly maintaining the drilling ban off the Pacific Coast, according to a House leadership aide who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of ongoing negotiations.
Pelosi has long opposed lifting the drilling ban but has come under pressure from members of her own party -- including freshmen in tough reelection campaigns -- to allow a vote on offshore drilling. Adding to that, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama recently said that he would be open to limited offshore drilling if it was part of a broader energy compromise.
A vote is likely to be held next month, after the House returns from its summer recess.
Hmmm Imagine that.

I saw some figures on tv about record use of public transportation in the US too. Cant remember the figures but it was huge. Im sure someone can find em with google or something.

Hmmm Imagine that.
She's getting assurances of more alternative energy subsidies out of it.
Ironically it was just uncovered that she's an investor in T Boone's wind farm land grab/subsidy scam.

Pelosi Is a flip flopper just like most democrates....Now that she sees that the majority wants off shore
drilling she will ok it....next she will say she was the pioneer of the idea. God, she is such a two faced witch!

McCain is a flip flopper just like most republicans....Now that he sees that the majority wants off shore drilling he will ok it....next he will say he was the pioneer of the idea. God, he is such a two faced witch!

Uh, McCain changed his mind when oil prices skyrocketed. You have him confused with Pelosi who only now that she recognizes the threat to her power base is beggining to reconsider.

You mean flip flopped?
On a side note, did you see where China was worried about a Democrat getting into office. I think that says a lot about our current administration.
-
Pelosi is in office....the American people are worried :uhoh
-
obama can't flip flop, he has no position to flip from , obama tells american workers he is against NAFTA and he tells Canada he is in favor of NAFTA.
obama says he will "end the war and bring the troops home", then he says he will move the troops from iraq and send them to afganistan
he is against drilling but wants to raise taxes on the people that do the drilling.
he says he is against racism but goes to a church with a racist preacher man for 20 years
he says his family is "off limits" then parades his family in front of the camera.
-
You have to love it, the demand goes down when the stuff gets exspensive. It almost seems like we were just buying gas because it was cheap. :huh

Shhhhh.
Be careful. A dose of reality might be too much for some to handle around here.
And your comment doesnt fit in with the typical rhetoric. Or spoon fed party line.

when it comes right down to it comrade... How much do we really NEED anyway? Soviet russians did without a whole lot of things.. like cars entirely and a home of their own.
We don't NEED to go on vacations or take a drive out into the country. We don't NEED to visit relatives.

Even I flip flop. A few years ago I did not like fish much, but now i love it. I used to hate taxes, but now i dont. I was sure I would work until I was an old man, but here I am retired at 33. I change my opinion and stance on things all the time when i get new information that makes the old dated. Thank cod i have never made a statement to the press. They would have slaughtered me lol.

The point of this thread was to give a big :salute to all who have changed their ways
on energy consumption. Hopefully the American people will continue to make saving energy
a life long plan! Hopefully some of the changes they have made to conserve will be a way of life
and not temporary. See what can happen when people come together to stop the madness?
The ball is now rolling with alternative energy sources. People have woken up to the fact that
we can use less oil and still have a happy life! To hell with OPEC!!

So you want them zombies to roam the streets?? :D

kaw... I don't think you get the point at all. I think that most of the people "learning to do with less" are not happy at all.. people in soviet russia and in the great depression learned to do with less.
Grinding the economy to a halt may not be a real good direction to go in. Alternative energy will happen when it is ready and not before. In the meantime.. we need to explore for and drill for more oil. Nothing else comes close to meeting our need now or in the near future.

Somehow I have a feeling our demand for oil will go back up as soon as Lazs gets his Elky out of the paint shop.
-
I get the point...but can you see because prices of fuel went up so fast, It woke people up?
Can you see that now it has opened the eyes to many people that we need alternative energy.
If the fuel prices stayed low no one would have done anything. and when the price went to 10.00
a gallon it really would have been a major crisis...now that the ball is rolling that $10.00 a gallon
fuel will never happen here(Hopefully)

Reducing our consumption isn't necessarily the best answer. Becoming self sufficient is.

Oil prices falling and Bush lifting the ban not mentioned once? Wow, guess he didn't do anything to help.

kaw.. I see what you are trying to say.. I just saying that for the most part.. you don't have a point. You are wrong in your conclusion that the people didn't really need to drive so this proves it. If gas went up to $1,000 gallon that would reduce use too... It would not be a healthy reduction.
Some of this reduction is not healthy.. many places that depend on tourism are hurt. People quit visiting friends and relatives.. people don't buy as much because of shipping costs.
Yes.. we can all get along with less.. the great depression proved that.. this proves nothing other than things are not as good as they were.
Oh.. and I drove the Healey today.. I think it gets about the same MPG as the elky. Broke the clutch linkage.. With Hot rods.. the price of the gas is not the major cost.

I don't NEED toliet paper.

exactly.. many peoples get along fine without toilet paper and if it cost $1,000 a roll we would see a reduction of toilet paper use here... proving that your finger is just as good and you don't NEED toilet paper comrade.

Heck, rich people don't need all that money either. By rich I mean anyone living reasonably comfortable not on the government's teat. Do we really want people having that much freedom and independence? Do they really need that extravagant bourgeoisie life style? We all know that only leads to exploitation and abuse of the lower classes. Of course our illustious leaders must be afforded the best of everything so they can remain immune from corruption. Viva la revolucion!
-
I don't NEED toliet paper.
Right on!
I swore off the stuff a year ago and all is great! Sure people point at me but I don't mind. Sure I use more laundry detergent but thats fine. On the plus side, the extra "attachment point" keeps my nuts from chaffing so its a net win! As long as I don't get too sweaty I can avoid those embarrassing trickles down my leg. I sure love living with less :rock
-
I have a point...my point is that we are using less fuel...why?...because prices were high.
Now my point is, because of these high prices people are conserving.. less demand...
lower prices...And if people keep doing that, prices will stay somewhat reasonable.
And if the trend continues we will use less and less oil...prices across the boards will go
down...see what I'm saying...toilet paper and oil are apples and oranges
And because of high prices...it light a fire under our inventors arses to find different ways for
energy.
Do you realize that oil is not made just for production of gas???
Are you saying these points are not a positive? I think they are.
-

In theory, prices are a matter of supply and demand. If we drop our demand then supply goes up and prices come down to stimulate sales... right? Not necessarily. If our demand goes down and other, growing countries like China continues to increase demand and their subsidies continue to offset increased prices it negates our sacrifice. If our good buddies at OPEC et al decide to reduce supply prices remain high as well. We don't live in a vacuum. In a world economy you are subject to market manipulation by external forces. We are foolishly entangled in a fools game. What is good is cheap, reliable power for all. It does not matter if that economy is based of oil or not. It simply needs to be cheap and most of all, reliable.
There is plenty of power in the universe and "doing without" is pointless within itself. It is a way to strike back against market manipulators but they can counter you. What the US really needs to is to dump its addiction to cheap oil and a solid commitment to developing a cheap and reliable source of power that is not subject to the whims of those who will exploit or kill us.
