WOW
According to Gallup pole, Johnny Mac is ahead by two...
Also pulling ahead, or catching up fast in several key states...
I know that polling is not the be-all and end-all of a political race..
They just mark trends, and give a general feel of the political climate...
But I think this is more that a little unusual, considering the media
being deep in the tank for the Dem's... And the Dem love fest in Denver...
Any thoughts as to why???

maybe people are getting smart? Maybe they are getting sick of the "all osama bin biden worship all the time" news channels and news papers? Maybe they are about sick of seeing his mug on time magazine every other week?
Maybe the pandering parade of shrill socialist liberals at the convention just turned their stomach?
Maybe they actually listened to what the messiah is really saying?

Was just browsing Fox News. Missed them being "deep in the tank for the Dem's." If there be a "Dem love fest in Denver" what should the Repub Twin Cities convention be called?
I said in the O'Club at the start of the election season neither Hillary nor Obama would become president. I'm half-way home on that one. Fully prepared to eat crow if facts prove me wrong.
A couple things on your question about polls: my initial reaction is more voters are sold on McCain than Obama. Excluding the die hard extremes who will vote for their party period, or against the other party period.
Then there's this, and I'll relate it to the crazy goings on at the O'Club. A topic comes up. Folks weigh in. Call it the 1st wave. Then there's the 2nd wave of assault. Some "you said" flung back and forth. By then, the "rooters" come in, the 3rd wave. It's no longer about the topic at hand but against the other guy or for another guy. And a good number of folks watching to see if something ridiculous and funny happens.
That's how I see the polls which the news businesses tout. It starts out being about something -- Obama versus McCain -- then it changes to be about other stuff after the 2nd and 3rd wave of assaults. And like the O'Club, the essays written and posted on Real Clear Politics for example figure into all that. I read a good deal of the essays on RCP.
The news/polls thing is the perfect business. Has no horse in the race and wins big time no matter what happens. The more dust thrown in the air, the better it is for them. Fox does a great job of it. They'll have a headline which has very little to do with the body of the essay. Maybe they figured out that readers read their stuff the way folks read AH's BBS: scan the thread titles and flame away in the thread that gives them the best chance at winning the day.
I don't think this race will be close like the last 2. The margin of victory will be larger both popularly and electorally. Could well be wrong, but that's my guess. Not a huge margin for either side, but greater than the last two elections.
Lastly, I think Lazs is right about folks figuring out who Obama is and is not. I listened about an hour or so of the speeches at the Dem convention after work last night on the radio. NPR does a good job. I'll do the same for the Repubs. When I vote, I'll be voting against my conscience no matter for whom I vote. Also, and here's the part I'm not so good at pulling off, there's sound limits on what a President can and will achieve. Checks and balances. If Obama were not for homosexuals and the neo-Black Panther thing, I'd be much more interested in him. The whole social world turned upside down which I'm dead set against. If McCain were not for fatting up the already over fat corporate giants along with the looting of America manufacturing and industry, I'd be much more interested in him.
The Middle East thing takes 2nd place in my mind to moral issues and industrial issues. The manufacturing issue, really, is long gone already. For a lousy billion or two or 100, those in charge of business made themselves deliriously rich and buggered joe six pack along the way. I think that is worse than wrong.
Then there's the oil companies whose only care is for each and everyone of you and me. :huh I'd love to pull the plug on the whole lot of them.

pretty safe bet.. it can't be razor thin every election.
I think the evolution is more.. starts out as a popularity contest based on raw appeal and ends on the basis of what the guy will do for or against the country.. whos side gets the nasty stuff to stick and fakes the good stuff the best.
Like anti second amendment democrats all doing the obligatory hunting or shooting pose around october.

I dont like McCain, Can't stand Hillary, not a big fan of O'bama, but I do like Biden actually. The Dems are about as smart as a decorative yard rock, they just sit there and act like their looks will get them elected. The Hillary thingy has totally ruined this convention for them, and serves them right in my opinion. I don't want someone elected just because their the new flavor on the ice cream truck, I want them to have good beliefs and ideas(have yet to hear a description on anything O'bama believes, and disagree with McCain on plenty of his ideas).
So for many of us this election year is a no win situation. :(

I must be getting better. Find myself agreeing with Lazs and SR. I looked at the Dem conventioneers online and couldn't keep watching. Could listen on radio just fine. But watching was intolerable. Those ain't my people -- whatever that means. Now, what would be unsettling is when I look at the Repubs online and have the same reaction. Then there's just no room in the inn. But I'm not expecting that. Greed is not good. I want to see the Repubs get back to their roots, but I guess I'm wrong on that one, thinking of Coolidge's "the business of America is business."
Check out "The Corporation" on You Tube. I never knew this stuff. Sky Rock and Lazs, check it out. I've seen only the 1st 2 or 3 installments. They're short and well done. I don't know how it ends. But would like to discuss some of those laws and background etc.

Hi Hap..
Great observations (am I first wave?).. find I agree... the slate sucks.
Regarding the Corporation..
Chilling, ain't it?

Number 11, 12 or 13 is about how they try and cultivate little children into full fledged adult consumers. Scary that they (advertising agencies) employ psychologists to help develop more effective commercials and also help children whine more effectively. Scared the piss out of me ( have a 2 year old daughter...EEKKK).
I guess it's okay though if you own stock in one of them.

oddly I find myself in agreement with you. alarming stuff that corporations.

For three generations we've been warned about the rise of the corporations...
There's been plenty of clues, lots of whistle-blowing.
.... remarkably, the corporations even tabled a coup, check out 'The Business Plot'. The most highly decorated Marine General in history spilled the beans. We came mighty close to a fascist state then... the transition is pretty much complete now.
But, as long as Daddy Daytrader and Suzie SoccerMom are kept happy with baby-wipes & no-more-tears trading tips, it's a lost cause... we get to gripe all we want, as long as we stay employed and buy what they're selling.
Welcome to the New World Order.
-
Any thoughts as to why???
The American people are not as stupid as the Dems and the press think.

Perfectly said. We are so cheap and easy: snuffy wuffies and some day trading & we sell out big time. I include myself in that too. I'm not exempt. Hoping to do better than I have done.

Not all of them are but the Dems and press are working hard to make them so.

Too early. Obama/Biden will get a short-lived 3-5 point bounce soon after the convention.
-
As of today Obama has ~2 point lead.
That's a far cry from 2 months ago when he had the "celebrity" status.
-
mg... I guess Obama is the popular choice in Imperial Russia, too?
When he loses here, if he immigrated to Russia, would he have a political future there?

Actually I'm pretty sure Russia and China are both rooting for the republicans. I believe the republicans have both aided in the rise of Russian power and also help line the Chinese pockets. Hard to believe you lived through the last 8 years and still want to vote republican.

I lived through the last 58 years of both Republicans and Democrats.
Without a helmet for 55 of 'em.

I don't wear a seatbelt either, unless nagged.
My kid said once 'he's a rebel.' My wife replied; 'no, honey; he's a moron'. (this from the woman who's gotten 3 cell phone while driving tickets from the same cop)
I've made it this far... guess we'll let history be the judge.

haven't seen this "corporation" thing but I do know that the socialists control all 12 years of public paid for schooling and any other higher education a mush headed kid may get.
They come back from school lecturing their parents and betters on the man made global warming hoax.. recycling.. the evils of firearms and the horror of not wearing a seatbelt.
Pretty sure I got a lot less to fear from adds by corporations.

Judging by his oratory skills, he will definitely fit in Germany!

Link to a YTube segment you'll like.... the film is available in 6 minute chunks, broken down by subject matter. I hopped around, got hooked then ran the whole thing. It's about 2.5 hours. Stub review below the linky.

"The Corporation" is like a shotgun blast: powerful but scattershot. The film has an incredible amount of information to offer but loses some of its focus, especially toward the end of its two-and-a-half hour running time. Some anecdotes would have been benefited from summary. For instance, the story of how Fox News successfully repressed an investigative report that was damaging to Frankenfoods giant Monsanto is an instructive tale, but in the detailed blow-by-blow, the crucial point of the final court ruling gets lost: it is now legal for an American news corporation to force its reporters to lie.
In other places, too, the amount of detail drowns out the focus of the argument. We learn, for instance, that the California Supreme Court considered, but ultimately decided against revoking the corporate charter of oil giant Unocal. But for a film that spent much time on the status of corporations as persons, it was surprising that there was no mention of the growing "Corporate Death Penalty" movement--if corporations enjoy the rights of people, shouldn't they also qualify for the ultimate punishment when they kill? Tighter editing could have driven home the central points of the film more successfully.
Ultimately, these are quibbles. "The Corporation," baggy as it is, stays fascinating throughout. Amusing vintage footage from silent movies and educational films illustrate some of the drier concepts, and the wide-ranging roster of talking heads includes everybody from Noam Chomsky and Michael Moore to Shell chairman Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, Milton Friedman, and reformed CEO Ray Anderson. Since I've seen "The Corporation," not a day has gone by that I haven't thought of one of the film's lessons."

Are you sure that it isn't reefer madness warmed over, with a new target???

Well put. I'd have been much much happier if it were Romney in McCain's place.

Romney is a complete yellow-bellied coward. One of the biggest pooseys to run since Dukakis.

sheesh...don't upset the sheeples with the cold reality of it all... under the neocommies russia has gone from a debtor to a creditor nation and is now awash with liquidity and it is third largest holder of reserve currencies and gold just behind japan and china.
it's pretty hilarious that the neocommies have to borrow money from russia to finance their debt ridden empire and war for global dollar socialism... henry paulson was just in moscow probably begging petrodollar putin to buy up more of uncle sam's war debt... russia and china don't have to conventional confront the empire as the neocommies will just sell it to them via the backdoor.
ironic tho... how the neocon socialists here tend to bite the hand that feeds them tho... ingrates all.

Ok watched it all, and it was interesting, I had no idea about some of the laws. But I have to say, anything that has noam Chomsky and Michael more as experts makes me wonder.
Their points about corporations were good, but not all the accurate in a general sense. Sure GE can effect world change, but Creative labs or other smaller corps are prolly not going to be buying to many politicians.
To me it had to much of a global warming message. Also the part Michael more talks about, how Fanta was cokes answer to WW2 not letting them ship coke syrup to Germany inaccurate. It was Fanta Yellow not orange. minor, but how many minor lies are in it in other sections?
The professor who talked about exponential numbers was better.
