Sounds a little like working in flight planning for ATC, but also sounds a lot like the Navy's AZ rate.

From the folks that I've known that had their so called "approved" careers pre-planned before signing the dotted line, very few actually did what they joined the service for. The recruiters will say or do anything to get that signature, including lying to you. I hope that you actually do end up getting what you want.

See that pic? No aircraft in the picture.  The guy is pointing out to the girl that there is a FOD control attendant on the runway crying big elephant tears because he believed the recruiter. ;)

A recruiter lie? Only when their lips are moving. Ok their not that bad. But read the fine print. If it's on the contract they will probably do it. If not your contract is void. Well sort of. If they say so.

Yup... has always been so. About 40 years back I signed up for PBR's/PBM's (Watercraft), got trained as a Heavy Equipment Operator (62M20) and assigned as a mail clerk. After I managed to lose and redirect to ANYWHERE else the battalions mail for a month straight, I got assigned to a service and evac unit and got to do everything I wanted to do.

Go with minimum expectations.. celebrate meeting those. Stay alert to how the assignments 'game' is played then use the system to your advantage. ;)

Good luck! <S!>

Have fun.  You'll go from cartoon fighter jock to real life floor buffer jock in no time.    :aok

He did enjoy his job very much.  In that particular MOS there are a huge variety of area's you can shift between. He did them all. He enjoyed some more than others.  The thing he loved the most, regardless of which particular area he was working in, was ALWAYS the other soldiers that he worked with.

He's been far less than pleased with any job he's had since he retired a few years back. While he's still happy to be serving Soldiers, the work ethic seems off kilter to him... it's now work until the 5 O'Clock whistle blows instead of work until the job is done.

I, on the other hand, have never been happier to have him home every day... and no more deployments.

I did exactly the job I signed up for, it just wasn't exactly the same as I thought it was going to be. ;)

I did exactly what I signed up for as well. And it was even better than I'd hoped it would be.

I was an Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist........I had NO idea what that meant when I signed the dotted line.  :lol

I was an air traffic controller. My father actually pushed me in that direction. He said it was my perfect job, as I started talking at 6 months and hadn't clammed up since. :)  It was a fantastic gig... since I lucked out with getting a fixed base tower instead of a unit that did entirely tactical set ups. :)

Want my advice? Bring a good attitude and avoid those ones with lousy ones.

Much of basic will strike you as strange, "what does folding underwear exactly 6" have to do with landing airplanes"?

But they are changing you from a grabarstic dingaling civilian to a team player who pays attention to detail and is disciplined. Discipline is a funny thing. Even sometimes the biggest screwball in the unit takes to it and turns into a good soldier.

Listen, and should you survive the various wars we'll be in, one day you'll be my age and look back at your service years as the best in your life. Just remember I said that. And good luck to you. Its nice to see a kid actually doing somthing with their life. My boy is already talking USAF.

While your out getting Von's prop wash grab me a roll of flight line. After your done with that I want you to check the autopilot altitude hold mode on 68190. It produces a 1000 fpm descent in hold mode.

Pm me if you want to know the crew chief response to that problem.

If you had signed up for grunt I bet you would get it with no problem.

As always, it's the needs of the service before what you want.  Any job in any service could have you pulling convoy duty in the Middle East.

Like Elfie said, everything you do in basic has a purpose.  The tiniest dumbest things tend to be the most meaningful, and when you get into the field you'll realize that it was really good that they taught you that.  It's an awesome life changing experience and for the most part, your success depends on you!

That's what my big brother did at Rucker in early 70's, what my Dad did post WW2 in the FAA :)
