Guess patriotism sometimes needs a little sugar coating.
It was a video that was supposed to elicit soaring patriotism and real emotions about the Pledge of Allegiance. But to do that, it used fake soldiers and a staged military funeral instead of the real thing.
On Tuesday night, 15-year-old Victoria Blackstone, a sophomore at the St. Agnes School in St. Paul, led the crowd at the Xcel Energy Center in the Pledge of Allegiance. The audience heard her 434-word essay, “Pledging myself to the Flag of the United States of America,” an essay she’d entered in the “Wave the Stars & Stripes” essay contest and won. The RNC turned that essay into a three and a half minute video, a visually stirring montage rolling over Victoria’s words about sharing the Pledge with Americans who have stood at important moments in history.
There’s the Continental Congress…A real WWII vet…Photos of workers at Ground Zero. A close-up of a folded flag presented to a grieving widow at a military funeral… profiles of soldiers swelling with pride in slo-motion.
But CBS News found that the footage of the ‘funeral’ and soldiers is what is called ‘stock’ footage. The soldiers were actors and the funeral scene was from a one-day film shoot, produced in June. No real soldiers were used during production.
The footage, sold by stock-film house Getty Images was produced by a commercial filmmaker in Chicago. Both Getty and the production company, Mr. Big Films, confirmed that the footage was shot on spec and sold to the Republican National Committee.
One of the actors, Perry Denton of Chicago, Ill. also confirmed that he was hired on a day-rate as an actor for the shoot and told CBS News he was surprised to learn the footage was shown at the convention.
A veteran’s advocate said that with soldiers still deployed and in harm’s way, there is an obligation not to sugar coat reality.
“What it does reveal is a serious lack of understanding and a lack of personal connection to the military,” said Paul Rieckhoff, Executive Director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
Rieckhoff, who is at the convention with a contingent of veterans added that a video tribute to Medal of Honor winner Michael Monsoor, a Navy Seal killed in Iraq, shown on Tuesday night, used combat video that appeared to him and several other veterans of the Iraq war to have been staged.
After a Web search of videos played at the Democratic National Convention last week, CBS News found no obvious use of stock footage.
The RNC did not respond to CBS News’ request for a comment.

Maybe they couldn't find any footage that suited the program from real sources. Maybe they didn't want to use footage shot by some of the un-biased news corps. Maybe the DNC is trying to pick apart the RNC because they know they are about to get hammered in an election?
-
Yes, and if they had used real soldiers and real funerals you'd be screaming about the outrage in exploiting those who serve our country and those who have paid the ultimate price. You're making yourself look silly. Next.

Had they used actual footage of a real funeral there would be those who criticized them for politicizing a solemn event.
Just can't win with professional critics

So by using footage of a fake funeral they aren't trying to politicize a solemn event?
-

Fake funerals are rarely solemn.
They are usually fake.
-
Have no doubt, there are real soldiers and real soldier's funerals. As has already been said, you would have been screeching even more shrilly had they used actual events.
-
I guess I didn't word that right.
Whether the funeral is staged or not, is it not politicizing a solemn event?

Yea I'd agree with this one.. unless they got permission from the soldiers families then it's better to just use fake footage. I see no real problem with that, even if I don't agree with their message.
It's a entirely different thing though of they use actors for soldiers that are alive or conjure up fake groups like Swift Boat Veterans like they did in the last election.

It is fairy obvious that you have never served in the military,
>> It is against the UCMJ for a serving member to participate in uniform, in a political campaign.<<
For that matter If I had wanted to attend one of the conventions, I would have had to go to an "Ethics" class and be briefed on allowable activities for government employees. (Hatch act)
So you feel it would be appropriate for a service member to break the law to appease your sensibilities?
Regards,
Kevin

Big deal. If the DNC...say isn't that an acronym for an abortion of some type...anyway if the DNC is just unhappy because they didn't think of doing it first. On the other hand perhaps they wanted to distance themselves from everyone by saying they only want "Change" but they will stick with the old congressional hands to keep the change from looking like anything different.

D= Dilation
N= and
C= Currettage
Scraping of the uterus. Happens in abortions and after a miscarriage.
How fitting it matches the wrong party instead of the right party :lol

I wonder if anybody will bring up about all the fake funerals in movies and stuff and maybe complain bout them being fake as well.
Oh SNAP....
Them der movies are movies and not the RNC.
Wasnt the moon landing faked?
Something about a set in the desert that was buried in sand.
Maybe that was the Ben Hurr set.
Go figure.

How about fake footage of melting glaciers? Guess that means global warming is fake right. :aok
Reminded me of a thread I was part of a while back. Is this the "fake footage of melting glaciers" you were referring to? In An Inconvenient Truth? This is part of what I said about that.
...All I can see from the video in the link is a shot of some ice shelves. It sure doesn't look they are doing anything spectacular like caving, melting before our eyes, or exploding due to solar radiation. They are just sitting there existing. We all agree that ice shelves exist don't we? Al Gore didn't trick me into thinking they existed. I already knew they did.[/b]
Go ahead, watch the video again. Look at the 5 -8 second clip. What do you actually see? Keep in mind that the separate shots of ice shelves caving, ABC calls, "actual video." Also, notice that ABC adds additional footage to their story from "The Day After Tomorrow" that Al Gore never used. But who eats it up?....
This is a very similar situation to what Al Gore was being criticized about - the use of "fake" footage in an instance when it was pretty much an irrelevant issue. Now, conversely, it is Republicans that are being chastised for an analogous incident.
It will be interesting to see the very same people who were horrified at Al Gore's use of artificial footage rallying to defend their team. Same goes for those that defended Gore, but are attacking Republicans for the funeral footage. Newsflash: it's the same damn thing. How can they attack it, then turn around and defend it? And vice versa? That's just not rational.
It shows that some people (Democrats, Republicans, Communists, whoever) are blind followers that desperately feel the need to be a part of something. Even if doing so means casting aside their ability to examine, interpret, use logic, and think for themselves in general. They just jump behind whatever cause/issue/candidate their side tells them to, no matter how little sense it makes.
As is the usual recourse for these lemming types, when being stared at by an argument that makes sense, and that shows what fools they are, it will either be completely ignored or they will fall back onto some form of ad hominem.
Edit:
Here's that thread I mentioned, if anyone wants to see it. http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,234233.msg2851714.html#msg2851714 (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,234233.msg2851714.html#msg2851714)

Maybe the Republican party likes to rap themselves in the flag, maybe they do this because they can't stand on the issues, maybe they'd rather show pretty pictures then talk about the reality of war, maybe the military in general and soldiers in particular are what they use to get votes more so then something they should use with wisdom. Maybe they are just a bunch of politicians looking for a photo op at the militarys expense hoping that they will get the blind faith of the average citizen without the bother of actually earning it.
-
Well, having looked through both threads, Iron is basically the only person who's stance changes depending on what party he's talking about. The line "but it's such an important issue that any lie or exaggeration is justified to move people to act" is a gem though.
You need to understand that even though the majority of the posters here (in the O' Club) seem interchangable, they retain a sense of self-identity. While it is absolutely true that the "independants" on this board will excuse nearly any indiscretion by a Republican while screaming themselves hoarse over a Democrat doing the same thing, you only caught one person contradicting themselves.
-

Speaking as one who attends military funerals on a regular basis, I can assure you that the family would not appreciate a movie crew at a loved ones funeral for the most part.
Someone really needs to get a grip on a thing called reality.

The thing that really gets me PO'ed is when politicians use images real or otherwise of our troops in anyway shape or form to show how patriotic they are, as if the the other guy isn't.
oh, and as far as independents pulling hard for Republicans and being against democrats, not this time, at least Obama never joined a political party dedicated to seceding from the union. Ck out the Alaska independence party that Palin was a member of.
Not that long ago she no longer wanted to be an American, so now she wants to be VP and possibly President.
That's not gonna get my vote. She is nothing but an opportunist.

You should get mad about something real.
Alaskan Independence Party officials released a statement Monday saying that Ms. Palin had been a member for two years, from 1994 to 1996, information included in reports in The New York Times and other news outlets. In Internet videos of recent party meetings, other party officials can be seen boasting of Ms. Palin’s past membership.
On Tuesday, though, the party’s chairwoman, Lynette Clark, said the earlier statement was false. Ms. Clark said that she had based it on information another party member had given her, but that a review of the records showed only that Ms. Palin had attended the 1994 conference. -- NYT

Let me help you out by giving you some ideas.....
She improved her town of Wasilla while she was Mayor by getting ear marks for a youth center, mental health center, sewer repairs, a rail line and a museum among others.
While governor she sold the governors private plane.
While governor she cut wasteful spending.
While governor she fought corruption not only in the Republican party but also corporate corruption.
Troopergate.
She fired the Police Chief of Wasilla.
She's better looking than you are.
You should be able to pick something out of that list to focus your hate on. :D

She was never a member of the Independence party, and she NEVER supported 'Nazi' Pat Buchanan for president---she supported Steve Forbes. (She WAS seen wearing a Buchanan button at a '99 event, but it was stated THEN that she "wore the button as a courtesy to Mr. Buchanan, and in an effort to make him feel welcome during his visit, but immediately sent a letter to the editor of her local paper clarifying that the button should not have been interpreted as an endorsement of any kind." http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0808/Buchanan_update.html?showall Frikkin media had obvious evidence that Edwards had a child put of wedlock while running fore pres, but they wouldnt run with it, but thus far have run 4-5 unsubstantiated allegations about Palin

Hadn't heard the Buchanan thing. But seems as tho she does alot of explaining. I mean other then anything specific about what she would do in the whitehouse. But then to be fair and balanced, what politician does.
As I have said to anyone who will listen, we need a legit third party in this country or you will never see positive change. this two party system stands witness to people who only vote down party lines without a clue of what is going on.
Republicans and Democrats that have been in washington for years spouting their nonsense about change, knocking each other, and looking for the latest thing to get the vote are what is ruining this country and killing the middle class.
It's not just Palin or republicans that make me see red, democrats are just as guilty. mud slinging and clever sayings are what win American elections, It's no way to pick a leader.

Ummmm... McCain is more of an independent than a republican. Palin eats republicans.
Now, I'm a pro-choice, anti religion, anti corporate pro constitutionalist registered independent. I think Ron Paul makes Barr look like a dolt. And, I don't think the independents can field an electable ticket. I do know that a democrat in the white house with a democrat dominated congress and 2 supreme court justice appointments coming up would be very, very bad for my interests.... and I'd say McCain-Palin is a pretty good chess move to slow down the federal slide to socialism. Show me an Independent ticket that's electable, can stop or hinder the democrats and marginalize right wing republican neocon policies and I'll vote for it.
Meanwhile, I'll continue to watch 'Sarah America' send the demo's into a frothing frensy with much approbation and amusement. And I'll compromise on the lesser of the two weevils on election day. Hope your bright enough to do the same.

Why do libs always pretend NOT to be libs---you continually spew every MSNBc/leftist talking point there is. She 'explains', because in the past week, she's been accused of everything (sans ANY sort of evidence) of damn near everything except being the 2nd gunman at Kennedy's assassination, and that's only because she wasn't born yet :lol

Your comments sound well thought out and reasonable, right up to where you make the "Hope your bright enough to do the same" comment. This is the attitude of the republican party in all there dealings with those that may be less then supportive of them, It is arrogant and alienating. And after the last 8 years they haven't much to be arrogant about.
I have yet to decide who I will vote for, I'm waiting for McCain to tell me what he plans on doing as president.
Other then insult and attempt to discredit Obama, what exactly is McCain for, what does he plan on doing to fix the countrys problems, and if he does have a plan why don't he and the GOP spend time talking about that, rather then slinging poo.

I don't insult YOU, just the things you state (unless 'liberal' is an insult, in which case, you oughtn't talk like one)
In short, I'd like to see our country become LESS like a European country, as libs seem to think that is something to look up to. (Were that so, WHY are SOOO many people from THERE trying to emigrate to HERE?) There is a cultural fight on in our country right now, between those who wish us to be more a socialist/mommy-state country, and those who wish us to continue in the path our Founders had in mind, a path which makes us the most unique country on Earth
-

Just to expand on this why do liberals take being called liberal an insult? I've been called a conservative many times. Each time I thank the person doing it.

Well, I'm not a liberal, I'm not an ultra conservative either. I value a more central position on our nation. I'd like less government overall, I'd like to see corprate lobbying made illegal, and I'd like term limits on all elected officials. I'd like to see the end of abortion and I'd like to see us out of NAFTA, I want our borders secured and Social security fixed. I want a strong military that is not put in harms way without good cause.
I want our heathcare system fixed, I want English as our national language. i want our public schools to be worth attending, i want fair honest banking laws. many other things i want to see, some may be liberal some may be conservative, neither end is to far left or right.
I want to be able to discuss my views with someone who may disagree with out being labled or insulted, and i want our leaders to act the same.
You may agree with some of my thoughts and disagree with others, or disagree with all of it, that's OK, THATS what our founding fathers had in mind, Our way of government is based on the argument, free to have an opinion with out fear of being ridiculed for it. we would make some horrible choices if we all agreed.
The problem we have in washington is that insults and BS are the topic of the day, dirty tricks and half truths.
No one is 100% right,we make better policy thru discussion then we do thru intimidation and insults.

If you actually perused the issues, followed the facts, used your own brain you'd come to a reasonable decision... for you. Hence the 'bright enough to do the same'. But, seems like instead of actually informing yourself and thinking about the consequences of your professed intended actions, your just annoyed at me for pointing out that a turd is about to land in your cream of wheat.

Wait a sec, if you are "a pro-choice, anti religion, anti corporate pro constitutionalist registered independent", I would think you would want a democrat picking two seats on the supreme court just to keep abortion around, if your anti-religion i don't think you'd want conservatives making the choice.
If you are "PRO-choice" and "ANTI religion" Why would you not like the Dems?
I would have to think you would like Dems, what am I missing here, thats something I have in common with most conservatives I've met, that I am anti- abortion. I'm not very religious but I'd lean that way sooner then not.
Did you miss type that statement or would you explain it, (not being a smart azzz, just want to understand you)

I would have to think you would like Dems, what am I missing here, that's something I have in common with most conservatives I've met, that I am anti- abortion. I'm not very religious but I'd lean that way sooner then not.
Did you miss type that statement or would you explain it, (not being a smart azzz, just want to understand you)
also because the opposite of pro choice is pro life which might not be all that terrible!
and the Christians stoped going around killing people over religion a good while back
so if you don't want religion , they don't make you go to church,
but the Dem's will make me pay more taxes, they will take away more of right to choose by expanding gov.
socialism doesn't work! yet they will try to force it on us!
on the plus side for the Dem's., i guess there will be more porn for me too watch :aok

In short, I'd like to see our country become LESS like a European country, as libs seem to think that is something to look up to. (Were that so, WHY are SOOO many people from THERE trying to emigrate to HERE?) There is a cultural fight on in our country right now, between those who wish us to be more a socialist/mommy-state country, and those who wish us to continue in the path our Founders had in mind, a path which makes us the most unique country on Earth
i have to give a double thumbs up on that. :aok :aok

oh, and as far as independents pulling hard for Republicans and being against democrats, not this time, at least Obama never joined a political party dedicated to seceding from the union. Ck out the Alaska independence party that Palin was a member of.
If that had a grain of truth mixed in it, it would be a big plus as far as I`m concerned.
But it does not.
