Title: Pyro's new rules
Post by: bongaroo on October 06, 2008, 10:05:16 AM
With religion, race, and politics off the table I see a good half of the o'club never posting again.  This will be interesting to watch.

May as well add posts on the economy to the list as this is invariably tied to politics.

I enjoy discussing politics, religion, race, the economy and history (which of course involves all of these).  If these topics are no longer allowed, then I have nothing to discuss.  Discussion on teddy bears or porn just isn't that interesting to me.

So....  before I even got to know most folks here I am saying goodbye.   :(

You think so? I think that folks who are bitter enough to name call will resort to that regardless of what the topic is.  Now it just becomes bitter name calling over what kind of vehicles one another drives instead of which candidate they support.

Well seeing how all conversations involving race, religion, or politics in here degenerates into nasty "no your a poopface" type convo's.  I'm not surprised by this move in the least.

You might be right.  But in political threads in here, people tend to just attack each other for being a Dumbocrat or Republitard.

Civil discussion and politics are like oil and water.

Its far wiser to be proactive than reactive.  HTC could have easily restored some decency by PNG'ing the few who consistently troll rather than debate.  Having some fun is one thing but there are a few turds that simply need to be flushed.  Going this far overboard will cut down on the discord but will also significantly hamper the community that they built as well as revenue.  Like other successful games, the core value of this one is the community that revolves around it.

lame...  your board and all, but still lame.  I enjoyed the discussion here, too veteran-heavy to be an accurate cross section of society, but that's why I like(d) it.  Why not an unmoderated politics subforum or something else that doesn't split the community like this does?  Bah, it's your ball, take it home if you want to...

An unfortunate decision.

A couple more weeks and the election will be over.  Things would have gotten back to normal.

Since religion and politics are a part of everyone in the world and have an effect on everything we do, there will be a lot of gray areas now and IMHO this will cause more problems then it fixes.

I understand HTC's need to have a clean board and that it drains a lot of their resources to keep it that way.  I think they would be happy to have the o-club membership drop dramatically so as to make it more manageable.  Good for them but bad for us who have learned a lot here over the years.

I hated to see it happen, but I sure saw it coming. No doubt, I contributed to it to some extent, I will not deny that. I cannot blame them in the least, I know I'd hate to have to come in here and clean this place up on a regular basis. I'm sure it was a serious problem at the HTC offices on a regular basis.

That said, the list of prohibited subjects will no doubt grow. The subjects already banned have such far reaching implications that most issues of any real importance cannot be discussed without going in to those subjects that cannot be discussed.

It could become quite boring and empty in here.

I don't think it will be boring and empty. We just post like we speak to one another in real life. I rarely bring up race, religion or politics among friends simply because we may not agree upon those 3 subjects and I'd like to maintain friendships based on trust, not opinions.  Close friends, its cool to talk about those issues because you already have that trusted forged into the friendship, and differences of opinions (in race, politics or religion) cannot melt that forged friendship.

One other thing that Pyro should try:

It works very successfully in many forums.

Heh, sounds like our season. He's on two football teams: The school football team is 0-2.  The Junior football team is 3-2 but with 2 games left, they'll be the 2nd seed, thus qualifying for playoffs.

Thanks for asking. Well you KNOW you're going to get a couple of pics when you ask how my oldest son is doing...Here's a couple pics from yesterday, one at linebacker, and one at guard. He had the game of his life, with 13 solo tackles. The damned announcer was calling him "Flash Gordon" again. :)

They went into OT against their nemisis (Who was 4-0, and expected to beat us by 3 TDS) and lost in OT 12-6.

 :aok GREAT PICS AS USUAL.

We're 1-4.

The new coach likes to start Seniors on offense. So my son is backup QB and backup WR on offense. The Sr QB is much bigger and faster, but more of a running back than a QB. Seriously my kid has a much better arm and we run a spread offense so I'm at a loss. Then again nobody pays me to coach.  ;)  When the QB does connect the seniors playing reciever have a habit of dropping the ball. Trevor along with another junior got in three plays on offense two weeks ago at WR.  The first play was a 12 yard completion to the other junior reciever. The second was a 9 yard completion to Trevor. The third play was a 57 yard Touchdown to Trevor. He hasn't played one down of offense since.
Trevor is starting at strong safety on defense. He's doing great in coverege but he tackles like a,,,,, quarterback. ;) No team has completed a pass yet on any reciver he's covering plus he had two interceptions week before last. So we're enjoying watching the game. Myself and his older brothers are all ex linebackers and linemen so we kid him to no end about his tackling ability. It did improve some this past week thoguh. :aok

The kid is an excellent athelete don't get me wrong. However he's not a quarterback.
He's too quick tempered and makes too many bad decisions.
However he is an outstanding football player he's big, fast, and strong, but doesn't have a passing arm.
Where Trevor will slip tackles this kid takes em on like Marion Barber, he'd be one hell of a runnning back.

I'm perfectly willing to see how it shakes down. I was tired of the political BS, almost non stop trolling and just general bad attitudes all the time. I'm interested in seeing how it changes. Some of the folks who will be leaving won't be missed, a few others will be. Other than the PNG selectees it's all voluntary.

One other thing that Pyro should try:
A political forum where only those who have a valid username here can view. That way you keep prospective clients from being frightened away if they just want to browse the forums without registration.

It works very successfully in many forums.
::Edit:: sorry fort he wall. I didnt realize I had rambled on that long LMAO

I'd agree with that. But I never played hide the identity anyway.
Hell. I'd be willing to use my real name as I've never been shy about bringing these topics up or expressing my views on them with even perfect strangers.

Personally. and with all due respect to Pyro.
I've never seen a BBS where the subject he claims "most boards" wont allow. save one. And that was so long ago I cant remember the name of it.
(wasnt very active either)

Personally I dont see how the goings on in the O'club is any different then the banterings that go on in the "General Discussion" forums.
Only the subject matter is different.

Its sad. Because they just killed the best damn parts of the O'Club.

Back in olden times the towns people (usually men) used together at the local pub. Drink a few pints, Smoke their pipes or cigars. And debate and quite often argue the politics and topics of the day.

Nowadays people only go to their local pub to get drunk.

I've always seen the O'Club as a kind of return to that time.
I've always viewed it. Even with all of its flaws, and arguments as a positive thing.

On politics. This place has forced me to bother to actually look up and learn about things that like most people in the general public. I probably wouldnt have bothered to otherwise.
As I found out the hard way. Here. moreso then anywhere else. that if you have a view or opinion on something. and you try to present it as factual.
You better have some sort of source or data to back you up.
Because if you dont. and you are wrong.
Someone here not only will call you on it. But will prove just how wrong you are.
Whereas other boards. you typically just see rantings. with little ty no degree of facts to back them up.

Because of the O'club.
I consider myself a much more politically educated person then I was when I first started here all those years ago.
On alot of subjects. Ranging from Politics to Tazers. I am much more educated then I was all those years ago.

As an end result. In spite of the inherrent problems that come with some of these subjects.
I consider myself better off now. then I was when I started here.

Personally. Rather then see these subjects banned.
I think that everyone in America. should have to spend some time here.

We still might not always see things the same way.
But.
We'd have a pubic that is much better prepared to cast votes.

Some time ago. I was at a friends house arguing with him a subject that is of no consequence.
As it was just one of many I've had with him over the years.
during the arguement he would say one thing. and I'd respond with a fact. bang, bang, bang. And offer to prove it. He didnt bother because we'd been this route before. And every time he has agreed to let me show him the proof. I was able to.

Later on i the evening. His wife said to me. "How does anyone win an arguement with you."
The responce was simple and honest.
"You either dont argue with me to begin with
Or.
You have to spend some time in the O'club to learn how"

While I understand the reasoning for Pyros move.
I dont agree with it by a long shot.
I dont think they fully realise what they have here.
A flavor, a collection of some pretty bright minds and insights that you just dont see at many other places.
I consider myself better of BECAUSE of  rather then in spite of, some of the arguements I've been involved with here.

In the end they just barred about 9o% of everything worth talking about.
and of the remaining 10% . 7% will have difficulties being discussed without bringing the banned subjects into play.

And the other 3% I predict with degrade into arguements anyway. LOL

I fully understand your point.

But the bottom line is.

Dred I agree,
It most likely would surprise some people but i have learned a lot from many in here, i actually respect lazs opinion, Dred's, and many others who have posted in here. There are many who would degrade the discussions by being immature with copying posts and changing things, but you learn after a while to ignore them. There are many intelligent, thought provoking commenters on this bbs, too bad it gets to name calling and other such crap.
You set out your opinion, if you have facts, great if not - you are screwed. I like that in a bbs. Looked at another one board promoted here, just a lot of name calling and foot stomping, in this economy, no one has the time for that anymore, I have wasted a lot of time in here ignoring business lol, time to get back to work.
I made my wife look up the "definition" for -Metrosexual- she still hasn't stopped laffing, her response- tell your pocket protector geek friends I would rather be married to one of those-where can i find one? - lol

It is HiTech's sandbox, no mistaking that. Yet HiTech has repeatedly shown that he prefers to have the community police itself rather than have HTC police it. Examples include, community mods in the O'Club and in the game, report features in the game and here on the boards.

I think this whole mess could have been avoided if the community mod program here in the O'Club had not been allowed to melt away. For example, Skyrock's incessant trolling would have been stamped out before he really had a chance to get going if the community mods had still been in place.

Well, Moj, are yah a button clicker? Cause that's what this is all about... Somebody get's a bug up his backside and every time the object of his attention types something that could be covered under the 'rules' they click that button. Some poor staffer gets to screen these, when something off the edge pops up, they gotta get dale or doug over to eyeball it. Politics pops up, that button gets clicked a bunch..

how the heck are they gonna get anything done?

Like any other festering wound, it gets treated and then the cause gets excised.. political and religious discussions.

Folks it's not the subject matter.. it's that damn button. This ain't a HTC disease, it's a whiney pissy skirt disease. HTC is just excising the subject matter that incites the button click.

I'd do the same thing in their shoes.. install 'shade' moderators and find a way to not be pestered personally 7 days a week, 24/7 by the whiners in this forum. Feel lucky he just didn't close the door outright... and that's a mark of respect for the guys that don't click that button every time they see something they don't like.

It was inevitable in any case.... sending one email wasn't going to accelerate nor stop it.

Is liberal a sufficient or necessary condition in this statement? Must one be panty-waisted AND Liberal to be a wuss? I don't personally qualify for either condition, as I wear boxers and don't know what liberal actually means when used pejoratively.

I would offer, that given the arsenal that some OC members sport, wading into their party and pissing in their punchbowl might be akin to suicide.

LOL.. after Hairball passed away (and thanks again to this community for the honor and respects paid to that old warrior) my ex and kid ganged up to gift me with a new cat for mothers day.. she got the cat from my kid, the dog was thrilled, my wife was not, I got the damn cat. It's been 5 years now.. it's pretty sedentary, just an average house cat. It's name is also Furball.

One day, not so long ago, when my kid was over; she noted that Furball was sleeping in my favorite chair... I walked up; pushed it off the chair and sat down. "awww, daddy; Furball was sleeping... you'd never have done that to Hairball...' I smiled sadly and said, 'Kid, I knew Hairball... and that critter there is no Hairball.'

So much for free speech.

That's a dumb thing to say.  There is no obligation for anyone to provide you with either a forum or an audience.  You can exercise your free speech all you want, but you have to be a hell of a lot more entertaining than most people if you expect someone to pay to provide you with a soapbox or someone willing to listen.

Not to single you out oakranger, but to all those whining about the rules change - get a grip folks.  If this really bugs you, you just might be investing too much emotional energy in one internet activity.

If you want a forum where you set the rules, lease some webspace somewhere and put up a forum yourself.  Seriously, there is nothing stopping you (except of course the usual laws which outline "speech" that is explicitly not protected) from doing this and posting whatever you like.  HTC has been fairly consistent in their policy that they set the rules in their forums, yet it always seems to surprise folks when they exercise any control at all over this portion of their business.

Lazs has a point (this forum often has a net positive filtering effect not provided by other media sources) but it's HTC's call, always has been, and calling Pyro or other HTC employees names is not going to have any effect other than confirm that the rules change was necessary and to help point out some people who are a bit too emotional about it all.

You should note one thing - Some of the biggest trolls did NOT post even a single "buhbye", even though they may not have been PNGd...  They know they contributed to the rules change and they couldn't care less about anyone else in the forum.  They got the reaction they wanted and they're out looking for another forum to crap in.

Said another way, online service providers with significant traffic, much like the shopping center in Pruneyard, may no longer be able to regulate who comes to their site and what they say, regardless of whether it is offensive to the online service provider or its users.

Curious if there has been any rulings either reaffirming this article or refuting it.

The goat might kick back. LOL

I put this up for informational and interest value and as a discussion topic only.

Curious if there has been any rulings either reaffirming this article or refuting it.

" Since this rationale applies only to large shopping centers, the court expressly declined to apply its ruling to "the proprietor of a modest retail establishment."

An argument exists that the Pruneyard rationale applies to major Web sites.

Key word: major

HTC would/could be considered the proprietor of a modest (perhaps even midsize) online service. Definitely not a major. As such they can happily apply the rules as they see it fit.

This is the forum of a business, HTC has to present a respectable image in order to maintain a professional reputation. Having a bunch of avacados mouthing off about Osamabama this and potato Palin that, for example, on their company website undermines their image. Freedom of speech? Lose the spoilt brat attitude, you do not have the right to talk watermelon on a private company's forum. Even if you did, you should be mature enough to restrain yourself.

Note beyond the first few lines. I didnt say HTC in particular.
Other then to mention the freedom of speech claims by some people.
Which I have also seen on other sites.

I didnt mention them in particular on purpose.
And I didnt do it to avoid a confrontation with Pyro, Skuzzy or anyone else.
If you know me at all from this board. You know I dont hesitate to lock horns with anyone if I have a reason. Or mind to.
People impress me. Not positions or titles. Never have.
And the folks at HTC must impress me or I wouldnt have been sending them free money every month since April LOL
So I have no quarrels with HTC.
I respect their position even though I dont agree with it.

But locking horns with the powers here wasnt my intent.
My intent was a search for the truth.
And possibly to create a discussion that may eventually put the question to rest one way or the other.
Someone slamming their fist on the table and saying something is so. Doesnt always make it so.

I also mentioned that In general I have always gone by the sandbox rule.
Meaning I personally have pretty much been in agreement.

What I wanted to see was if that assumption held water. So I looked it up
Because.
Often there are times that a general population as well as some businesses go by assumptions that may not necessarily be true.Turns out it does, and it might not.
Turns out that it is also as was pointed out by 2bighorn it may also has something to do with the size of the company.

Yahoo and Ebay have forums too.
But the claim of "its their sandbox" may very well not hold water.
Spoiled brat attitude or not.

Now you may not agree with that.
I may not agree with that.
But based on the article ( I suggest you read it if you havent)
Several courts may very well say otherwise.

And BTW
While I fully agree with the very last line of your responce.
Isnt your disposition in the preceding sentence the very same type attitude that the political threads degraded to that got them banned here.

My apologies for not being clear, my post looked like it was directed at you, Dred. It wasn't. I was irritated by the ignorant rants of a few others in this thread. I'm all for discussion and informed opinion. If everyone posted with in mind the ban would not be necessary

No problem.
And my apologies if my response in my wrongly placed assumption seemed overly aggressive.

Hmmm.. I thought of a 'measured' response to the tone, considering presentation of the subject matter and bearing in mind that escalation in the rejoinder would be warranted; for the anatomical reference alone is offensive enough to authorize an overwhelming thermonuclear response, especially since I'd not be able to launch again..

Then I thought about butterflies and poodles and the urge went away.

..I'll let somebody else 'click the button'. And take some pride in that while I have done my fair share of pulling wings off of posters that dance around the maypole, I've never had to resort to the sub-basement level you took your post to.

I think the whole thing is just great.  I recall happily when HTC closed the O'Club.  Coarseness is not praiseworthy, and is a symptom and an ill in and off itself of our times.

Well I think HTC is a group of good folk but they should have just made an over 18 O'Club with less moderation.  They could have had a poofr O'club as well for those who couldn't stomach harsh language. *shrug*
