Watch this film from the perspective of psbryguy. I didn't have object detail set high enough so that you can see him from my perspective in the film (shift-f4 works just fine in the game). Apparently, from 1900 yards a panzer cannot penetrate the armor of the M4. :furious

Isn't 1900 yards a really, really long ways...?

Ya it is.

Over a mile, but usually a couple of hits will take out a tank at that range.
I think I heard someone say 'yeah I hit him a bunch of times but nothing happened' so I think it's just that occasionally-occurring indestructible tank bug.
-
I hit a Panzer with a Panzer 16 times last weekend without killing him. Finally an aircraft bombed him and I got the kill. It was at long range though.
I also hit a Tiger point blank three times with a Panzer a few nights ago without the kill.
I know where to hit GV's so that's not the problem. It seems like the Panzer got borked somehow.
-
Armor was supposed to be a weakness of the M4. A panzer would have been long dead in this same situation.
-
I suggest you look at where you hit and the angle you hit at.

I hit him on the turret and on the front armor where it meets the turret. The angle is probably 20 degrees off of head-on.
What amazes me is not that the individual shots were ineffective, but that none of them were. Again, armor was supposed to be the weakness of the M4, and yet in our game it's extremely well armored and only costs 6 perks.

True. Maybe it's the Panzer's gun and not the M4 that's the problem.

The m4 is a pain at times. I have hit them multiple times with every other tank and had them shrug the hits and then get the good ol' 1 shot to the face. But I also had to hit a t34/85 8 times with my t34/85 before killing it last night. I popped the turret from less than 50 yards with the first shot from the front. 3 of next for were shruggd off and 1 was a richocet. Sixth shot tracked him. Seventh was a richocet. On the eighth I drove around to the side and put a HVAP through the top of the engine block and he popped (he was tilted toward me).

I guess if the Sherman's armor was a weakness, you will agree that the weakness of the T-34 was also it's armor?

Shhh he's ranti.... rolling. :aok

Why would I agree to that? What does one have to do with the other?
-
Armor does work sometimes, ya know. LOTS of factors go into the hit, not just the armor thickness and projectile attributes. Angle of armor to projectile impact (deflection)? Projectile energy (penetration capability)? Etc.
Regardless if you hit a tank once or twenty times... its armor can work like it should.
-
Change aim points slightly and you will 'eventually' find a penetration point.
-
Head on to M4: don't hit the turret and don't hit the glacis. Hit the center of the curved armor near the bottom of the glacis. Side on you can hit the turret or the hull and easily take out an M4 in one shot.

Has nothing to do with armor thickness, so don't look at that. :noid

So I had to hit him lower down? That would've been hard to do because he was behind a small hill, but I'll remember that for the future.

if i remember right from reading about them, the panzers could kill shermans from approx 1500 yards easily, whereas the shermans guns weren't effective till within 700 or 800 yards?

That's the Sherman without the big gun that the Firefly has, but nothing should change in the Panzer's ability to kill it.

FIREFLY= teh 1337!!!!!111!!!!111eleven gun.

Since "Panzer" is a generic term for a German tank, it can just as easily mean the Panther or Tiger, which had much more powerful guns than the PzkwIV.
Oh, and Anaxogoras -- they could kill T-34s easily from that range, too. :aok
-
I seem to remember that most models of the Sherman had highly inadequate armor, usually very easy to penetrate.
Also, any chance we may be getting either the standard M4 or one with the M1A1C 76mm gun? (Similar performance to the 17-pounder, but less powerful by a decent margin. Possibly a low-point perk tank?)
-
With the perk price of the firefly the standard M4 should be free...if we get it.
-
When I'm in a tank of any sort I die just fine to the first hit at 2000yds. EVERY time. Where can *I* get this magical armor? :furious :furious :furious

Nobody told you about the Scotch and where to send it, yet, have they?
-
Eh, the more I drive tanks, the more I'm convinced that the M4 armor is way overdone.
-
The M4's frontal armor wasn't bad. At 51 mm and well sloped it was better than the T-34's front armor. The Sherman's main problem was its high silhouette and inadequate armament. The VC Firefly remedied the gun problem and became one of the best tank killers of the western front. If the Sherman had got a good gun from the start it would have been remembered as a great tank like the T-34.

I agree there is a fundamental problem somewhere in the random damage generator when you hit a vehicle. I dont know how many times I have been in a panzer and hit a Wirbelwind or Ostwind from the flank and the round bound off not once but twice or thrice. Same things goes for a tiger hitting an M4. I know the angles and range play a part in it but in the case of the M4 in this game either perk it more or change the armor pacakge to represent the true armor of the tank. Other than the upgraded turret armor it was still pretty good at going up in flames to the 75mm pak40 or 76mm german guns of WWII. What can be done though as is? I guess just try to aim better at the weak points on the vehicle and hope they dont range you first. I am trying to master the art of shooting on the move more now than before. Shoot, move, communicate with your squad mates or other gv'rs. But on another point what do we all say about trying to get HT to put the historical gunsights in the tanks???
