We were supposed to read a book and write a report about it. So I get all these Non-Fiction Books and Biographies lined up (I hate Fiction Books) and I read them all, I'm set for like a 110% in the grade book...
Well, Friday comes around and it turns out it was only supposed to be FICTION!!!
So, I quickly go to the library and get the book 'The Gates of the Alamo' and it's a really good book, but I've been reading all weekend and have only gotten in like 250 out of the 577 pages....
And it's due monday... Got, I hate my English Teacher :(
And I cant find any damn cliff notes to it! :( :frown:
I think I'm far enough ahead though, I can kind of wing it... :P
I hope :(
-
Next time you're crunched for time, don't pick a 577 page book to read.
Just a thought.
-
Had to be atleast 500 pages long, only interesting one (and short one) I could find. :uhoh
I actually like it, shame I cant read it all :(
-
LOL,
next time pay attention to your instructor, and you won't be crunched for time.
Learning is best accomplished with the mouth closed and the mind open.
-
Well, I was absent because of my ankle the day it was assigned... Oh well... I'm boned.

When I was in high school I also thought I didn't like fiction. Instead, it turned out no one had ever suggested a fiction book that I might actually like. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same way with you.
-
I've read plenty, just cant stand what isn't true I guess.

That's hilarious. I have to admit when I was 10 or so I loved those stupid books...

I think fiction is neither true nor false. It's like...if I tell you a joke. Did I lie or utter a falsehood?

ENglish class ? what?
-
*sigh* I loved English. I CLEP'd out of the about 4 english college courses ~ because I wanted the instant credits. But those were the courses I would have enjoyed actually sitting in the class for.
Hey, 1+44 ~ there are tons and tons and tons of fiction books out there are just as awesome as non-fiction. You'll really be missing out on some of the greatest reads ever if you stick only to non-fiction. You could dive into fiction books related to the non-fiction topics which you already enjoy ~ that could help ease your transition into the appreciation for a good fiction book. :)
I want to be able to just be a full time student ~ only taking courses that I am in merely for the enjoyment of being in the class. Never really working toward any one degree or another ~ just in there learning cool stuff. I think only rich people get to do that though? Never work ~ and just pay money to take college classes that don't really count toward a degree plan? :) That counts me out for sure. *smile*
-
English never really interested me. I never had trouble reading a normal length book and writing a couple pages of pretty roadkill about it over the coarse of a weekend though. Obviously could have had grammar pounded into me a bit more though...

Well, I've read about 150 pages in 3 hours, and I really want to finish the book. I really do like it a lot, it's more of 'historical fiction' so it's like reading a non-fiction book. The book is awesome when it comes to action and detail, I'll see if I can post up some of my favorite parts... I still have a 5 page book report to write.... good lord.
-
<-- read Moby Dick cover to cover for real and reported on it harsh.. got an A-
Pick something substantial and report honestly, you will do well.
-
OKAY! I'm done! I finished my book report... It's only 3 pages, but I havent double spaced it yet :D
SO... I'm printing, stapling, and turning it in :D

There's always the, "my dog ate pages 4 and 5" excuse. :lol

AP English I wrote on every essay prompt given having only read two books to use. The Poisionwood Bible and Cold Mountain.
If you read Cold Mountain you'll be able to answer most any essay prompt.

Cap1, that's easy enough to answer. All that city folk book learnin just gets in the way. That boy's got some flyin to do. :aok
-
I'm with you 1+44, I can't read any book without any action in it, whenever we have "free reading friday" (basically where you read the whole period) I've always got a war book...just finished "The Forgotten 500" and started "Every Man a Tiger".
-
Well, I passed!
I had to give an oral presentation to the class, and got a 110 on it (I dont know why I got the extra 10 points, but I'm not complaining) and mine was the longest. the 2nd test grade (typing part) is a 95, because I didn't double space it....
And with it single spaced, it's nearly 3 1/2 pages long

My suggestion of fiction books that are good reads:
Maltese Falcon(Dashiel Hammett...he really has a descriptive way with words)
Deception Point(Dan Brown writer of The Da Vinci Code; real page-turner)
Digital Fortress(another Dan Brown)
Lord Of The Rings(Tolkien...1000 pages plus but every page is worth it)

If you're into WWII series books, pick up The Corps and Men at War series by W.E.B. Griffin. Any of his series are awesome, not that hard of reads especially since he catches you back up from time to time, but they really immerse you in the story.

The fact that 1Plus44 will voluntarily read a non-fiction book means he is probably already on the way to being more intelligent and educated than the public school system wants him to be.
I remember when I was down in third grade, they moved me away from the shelf where the encyclopedias were because I was reading them when I was supposed to be, um, "learning". Ummmmmmmmmmm, WTF? :huh
-
wtg!
now finish the darned book! :rofl
I did, and it was more of a non-fiction than anything! Just no personal accounts...
If you get a chance read it, the detail was amazing, I've read books on the Alamo that had the exact same stuff, but this book had it into a lot more detail into it.
The other thing is BnZ, I pretty much stink at math, but I LOVE anything history related... It's all so interesting when I learn something about the past of Texas or America... I really liked the Odyssey when I read it (Fiction too, but a classic). I'm reading Beuwolf or whatever it's called ATM... It's confusing to read, but I get it for the most part.
-
If you want to read about Texas, read James A Michener's book 'Texas'.
He also wrote Alaska, Mexico, Centennial, Hawaii and Chesapeake.
http://www.amazon.com/Texas-James-Michener/dp/0449210928
All are historical fiction.
-
Eh, I think I got a Non-Fiction book next! :rock which will be GREAT for me! :devil
I'm thinking two books, you pick them out:
Fly Boys - James Bradley (I think. He's the guy who made Flags of our Fathers)
or
Citizen Soldiers - Stephen Ambrose
:salute
-
Count of Monte Cristo
-
Eh, I'll go through 2 or 3 books, that'll be #3 :)
-
If you have to read non fiction, Fighter Boys is a pretty good choice. If you can choose fiction, might I suggest either 'Bomber' by Len Deighton, 'Piece of Cake' by Derek Robinson or 'Blue Man Falling' by Frank Barnard. Trust me when I say that anyone who is in to AH2 will love all three.
'On the Beach' by Nevil Shute is the last book report I remember doing in high school in the dim and distant past. Good book, if somewhat depressing.
-
I wasnt even in junior high when I could read 200 pages an hour. Now I have to take an interest in something to read more then a paragraph or I go to sleep pretty fast.
-
Count of Monte Cristo
I pulled that book off the shelf & place it up top with the "read next" books about 6 months ago. Haven't done it yet, but maybe now I will. :) Then again...
1plus,
I like not knowing what I'm going to read next. Start with one book & read it. Out of that book, pick one topic, remark, historical account, or character that captures your interest. Then go get a book about that. Then out of that book, pick one more thing & get a new book. Then treat yourself to an ice cream sundae each time you reach 10 books read. :D :aok

I ready Fly Boys while I was in Iraq and it was pretty good.

If he's going to eat Ice Cream Sundaes based on how much he reads, he'll never have to worry about getting fat. :rofl :rofl

The more you learn about math the gladder you'll be as you get older. I won't lie to you and tell you that in all jobs, or even most jobs, you'll be using it, but mathematics opens up the whole world of science. The world is a better place the more you understand how the stuff in your life works.

Read Siege by Russ Schnieder. I usually don't agree with reviews, but this one is spot on.
"This darkly painful narrative by a writer too early dead will change you. Such is art on its highest level." -- Harry Crews
I try to get everyone I know to read it.
-
Well, I finally get an option of what I can read. I'm gonna read 'Fly Boys' By James Bradley. The guy who wrote Flags of our Fathers. From what I know, it's about an island called Chi-Chi-Jima and about American Pilots that Got shot down there (I've only read through it briefly, so it might not be that. :salute
-
I did something like that for my English class I picked the easiest book I could find "Wizard Of Oz" :D

Can't you read a non-fiction book and then write a fictional report about it?

Shoot, I could just make up a book name and author about flying... Or like Pokryshkin's biography and make up crap and get a passing 100 on it w/ flying colors. :lol
