I know its been tossed aroumd on 200 a few times and I even asked in OC, it was suggested I also post in here, I just want to know everybodies thouhts on the possibility of a future california ah convention.
-
I would attend... Suggest the Bay Area, that way WA and OR players might be able to attend as well
-
Thats what I suggested in the OC thread

Fingers crossed, I'll have emigrated by Jan 09, so you can count me in. :D
Yup, i'm gonna be an immigrant - but all legal and above board like..... :D

Sacramento area is far cheaper to stay than the Bay area, and less congested.
Quick flight into Sac International or a drive from the bay.
Heck, I'd even consider playing host for that one.
-
I agree the Bay Area is nice, but can be pricey depending where in the Bay Area it is. The Sacremento area sounds beter as you can get decent air/train/bus rates to get there from across the west side of the country, but yeah... anyone who's been there during the summer will vouch for the hot and humid weather there. But at least there's the river. I live in the LA area and hate Southern California compared to the central and north state. It only gets beter the further north you go imo.
-
I'd go for Sac too, Working here in Frisco leaves you Jaded and longing to escape, so lets bring it on to Sac Fellas :aok
-
Look, really, there isn't anyplace in the central part of the state that isn't drivable from any other part of the state. With airfares being what they are, the key to large attendance is picking a vaguely centralized location that lots can drive to.
Think Davis. Or Sacramento. Or Fresno. Or Bakersfield. Or Santa Barbara. or San Jose.
Then combine any of these city with a decent airport for out-of-staters, and ideally, a good museum or airshow on the same weekend, and then you have a perfect location for a west-coast mini-con. I've been to a San Jose Mini-Con in 2003 (for warbirds) and it was cheap, easy to plan for, and fun.
Anyone remember the 2000 Warbirds Cons? That's right - two cons at the same time. One was in Palm Springs, and one was in Washington DC. We had contests between the two cons, and it was a blast. Each had more than 100 guys attending.

I would defintily attend this meeting as I'm in Orange County . it would be nice to see everybody and I have squaddies who live in Washington State who would also probably attend , and Wurzel your coming across the pond to be here WAHOOOOO bud . Looking forward to this alot .

Im down for a cali con.... So Cal would be nice :rock

Wonderful Idea curlew!! I live in salem oregon, so I could make the drive! I would like to see that be done!!
-
Yeah, I'd personaly rather be in Sacramento than Palm Springs for a weekend, but I do know that there is at least one aircraft museum in the Palm Springs area, the only museum I know of in Sacramento is the big train one there, and that was when I was a little kid.

I went to the grand opening of this museum, and have been back several times. Not huge, but fun.

That's it, and that's what I remember about it. Not huge at all, but what they do have there to display is nice and fun to look at.

Welcome, Wurzel! It is excellent to have you in the US.

Palm Springs has a nice air museum with lots of WWII planes in flyable condition. When I was there they started one up right on the museum grounds (can't remember, might have been a TigerCat). It kind of surprised me as we were standing right next to it- thought insurance wouldn't let them do that. The museum is right connected to the airport runway and they have demo flights as shown in their demo flight video.
http://www.palmspringsairmuseum.org/
Palm Springs is easily reachable by car, plane (from LAX), and Amtrak. Plus, if you get bored, there's an aerial tramway to the mountain top (http://www.pstramway.com/). However, it is Southern California and biases against Bay area and especially against Oregon and Washington folks. Sacramento is more centrally located. Don't pick Bakersfield though, that's a pit ;) (Trust me, I've been there many many times.)
-
We had a mini con in California a few years back. This would not be the first. Some that were around back then might remember. It was held in the Bay area near Fremont. Maybe a 15 or so attended. We had a good time with a couple WWII pilots speaking. Great stuff. If I recall we also went to the Salinas air show that weekend too. I can't remember all who attended, but a few were TeeeRex, Vaderr, Maddog, Makarov9, Puke, and I think Funkedup who set it up. Just can't recall for sure.
I agree the Bay Area would be more $. I too think we would be better in the Central Valley. Sacramento or Fresno would work well.
-
would be nice to have a con in ca, but it would be nice to have it within a drivable distance, since of all things, i afraid of flying :rofl. somewhere in central or southern ca would be nice.
semp
-
Wow, I was expecting a light response, but nothing this positive. Roc I would help in the planning phases, do you think we should start the initial planning on this gentleman?
-
Just south od Santa Cruz here. I'm in for anywhere in central or northern ca.
My office is in a resort. Unfortunatley the prices here are a bit up there even with my discount. For a double room, meeting room, breakfast and lunch the cost would be, ballpark here, about $275 for a group larger than 20 people. The sleeping rooms are considered condos so they have full kitchens and living rooms.
Like I said, pricey buy right on the coast, just a 5 minute walk down the path to the beach.
The Watsonville Fly In takes place Memorial weekend, great air show!
-
I think sacromento would be a good option, either that or san jose, the two lowest airfares into the area. any arguemnts against?
-
Go for it Curlew :aok
-
Sac has a Fry's Electronics. ;) (Although I bet San Jose has one too, or near by)
Coming from a rural area I enjoying going to those kinds of stores. :)
Sac would also be a lot cheaper than San Jose to stay at.
-
I think at the palm springs air museum would be neat. They have areas available for things just like this! <S> Hope this cali con gets off the ground!
-
I've got a membership with CalSAE which has a great connection with the travel industry. I'll start to get an idea of group rates, internet capabilities, meeting room sizes and such. Let's start there, see what evolves.
And yes, Sac has Fry's (Daddog, you should see the new one in Roseville :O :O)

I'd be all for Sacramento... but I don't know what if any air museums or air shows they have going on there (something AH-relatedish so we don't resort to just farting and drinking beer the whole time (not that I object to such things, but we can do that at home or anywhere... even Bakersfield)).
-
The problem with palm springs is that ther is no real easy way into it except to drive a hour or so, though I must agree it would be an awesome place to have a meeting, plus its also with in a reasonable drive of march afb which also has an awesome muesem. But It would be expensive and hard to reach, maybe for a minicon or a get-together?
-
:rock :aok
-
I'd be up for this.
I'm in OC so SoCal would work. But I also have customers in San Fran and Sac that I could...errrr.....find a reason to visit.
There's at least two other Lancers in the Sac area and one in Oregon that might be up for this.
Cheers.

You must be thinking of another year, Llama. I was at the 2000 Con, where I met up with ten of my fellow members of Fletch's JG54 "Greenhearts". In fact, I'm looking at the JG54 group photo right now, and according to the logo printed on it, it was in Raleigh, "Nawth Cah'lihnuh."
Also at Con 2000, among others, the late Gabby Gabreski addressed the whole group. And I got a chance to shake hands with both Charles Brown and the late Franz Stiegler (look up the B-17 named "Ye Olde Pub" for the story), a rare treat.

The California Museum of flight is at the former McClelland AFB (in the city) with some good examples of WW2 Iron. The CALFires ramp is across the street with 20 or so A-20/P-2 "fire bombers" in flying condition. Also the Reno National Air Races are a short two hour drive up the hill... a chance to see a pony REALLY run! Chuck Yeager lives in Grass Valley 45 minutes North of Sac. He is speaking at the Museum on Nov. 22 at 1PM so don't expect to see me in the MA THAT day!!
-
Somebody mentioned that they had once done a duel convention, and east coast v west coast thing, this sound like any awesome idea.
As for waht majissue said was very correct, and maybe this could be planned near a time when the reno air races are and try and all go intogether on one of the vip boxes, would be very fun.
And flatbar, where in san jose you live, Im currently at state
-
This looks like its going to come together nicely . And get a good turn out as well . The nice thing is no matter where we go museums abound . Here near the OC we have Planes of Fame in Chino , Ca. they got lots too , but central or Northern would also be good , I'm easy as to locals. And besides I'd like to see Wurzel again he's a good guy and I enjoyed meeting him in Vegas last spring .

Brooke, thanks for the welcome fella, but I'm not there until Jan09 at the earliest :D

That's the least of his worries. More importantly, where will he be able to buy decent tea bags and milk-chocolate hobnobs? Will there be any decent curry houses to finish off a Friday night p**s-up? And how much will having his teeth brought up to Cali standards cost. :D
-
Hey if you guys want to get together in Oregon we have the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinville Oregon which has the Spruce Goos and many other historic aircraft. Probably wont go over well but Its just a thought! ;) <S> :aok
-
Lol Wooley, bringing a truck load of tea bags with me, dont eat chocolate hobknobs (so no worries there) and my teeth are perfect (got em in a jar near the bed :D)...........tho they dont shine in the sunlight like a lot of the peoples in 29 palms.........
Wherever you end up having the con, lemme know, and I'll try and attend (wife will probably start giggling at the thought of all those grown men meeting up to talk about plastic planes (which is what she calls Aces High lol).

I'm definately up for a California Con. I grew up in Sacramento and live in San Jose. San Jose is very expensive -- Sacramento would probably be a better choice. It is HOT in the Summer (but it's a dry heat). Plus, it would give me an excuse to take the kids to visit their grandparents.
-
Count me in for Southern California! :D
-
It sounds like most respondants could get to a Sacramento West Coast Convention.
Lets take it to the next level and start making plans. If we want to hold it in conjunction with the Reno Nationals it will have to be 9/16-20/2009. the link is below:
http://www.airrace.org/indexJS.php
The California Capitol Air Show is usually in March, and has been headlined by the Blue Angels and featured a large static display of Military aircraft and warbird flybys the last two years. The link to last years show is below:
http://www.californiacapitalairshow.com/
The Aerospace Museum of California is located at the former McClelland AFB, in Sacramento. The link is below:

Lining up guest speakers should be close to the top of the list. I have some ideas involving WW2 aces that live in the area, but we need to decide on a date before we do anything else. We should ensure that we set the date far enough in advance to ensure that we get a good turn out. Also what kind of support can we get from HTC? Speakers, events, equipment, subsidies? We also need to promote the event with local/regional media outlets. Maybe we can get a little publicity for Aces High and drive a few more subscribers to the waiting arms of HTC.
Logistics? We need a venue like the conference room at a hotel that has internet access available. We also need to make deals for food and lodging locally, well in advance. The current economic climate makes this a buyers market for the goods and services we will need so making arrangements well in advance of the event will net us the best pricing.
I welcome any and all discussion/comments that will lead us toward making this happen!
-
You know, it has already been announced that there will be a "main convention" in Dallas next year in the third weekend of october.
Why not plan a west-coast con for the same weekend, and then maybe plan on some Con-on-Con action, so to speak? I mean if you have the west coast con even remotely close to the same time as the main con, people are going to not go to one in order to go to the other, so why not make it a big weekend for everyone?

Any time is fine w/me... But rather than us "Left Coasters" continuing to get the "left overs", I would favor scheduling that didn't conflict with the Texas shindig. We might even convince (read that BRIBE) HiTech himself to venture west to address us "left-outers" on the "left coast"... I have a bottle of 25 year old single malt whisky from a certain country in the north of the British Isles sitting in a climate controlled "vault", waiting for a special occasion! If I can get the guest speaker I want lined up (IF we can agree on a date before November 22), Dale and his posse would sit on the runway and let the AKs vulch them for a month straight if they missed it!
It's bad enough that our Senate delagation has Boxer and Feinstien and that Speaker Pelosi calls California home... We need to have an event that will show the rest of the AH community how we do thing West Coast style!!! There is Intelligent life West of the Sierra Nevada Range despite what you might have seen on TV!

lol. West of the Sierra and North of Santa Barbara is where the good people/food/beer/culture are hidden. I hate it down here in So. Cal, the people suck! It just gets nicer the further up the coast you go.
-
Don't fret Babalonian there is a few of us nice guys here in So. Cal. and while maybe not alot of the folks are nice when you meet a few good ones it can out shine the bad . But really it would be nice to meet everyone and have a great time .

Nor Cal weather sucks. I've heard a rumor of a city on the coast up there, but its so fricken foggy, no one can find it.

SoCal perma-summer is the way forward (until we run out of water). :uhoh

I dont know if i would rather have a major con weekend with several cons across the nation, ie a calicon, a texcon, and a NYCcon, becase then there would be allot more people able to attend, but it is true that if we had tehm at separate tiems we might be able to get the htc crew to roll out here, but what are the possibilities of this happeneing anyways, htc staff comment on this please?
I would be down for either, so ill let you fight it out
-
Though this might seem like an attempt at "reverse psychology," (and it isn't), I can tell you with near certainty that the chances of anyone from HTC flying out from Texas on their own dime to attend a West-Coast Mini-Con is about zero.
Chances improve if the con organizers can scrounge up the dough for a plane ticket and a room, or if the attendee headcount gets above 40 or so.
I hope I'm wrong, of course, but I've planned these things before...

Bay area has fleetweek w/Blue Angels in early Oct. May also want to coincide with Collins Foundaton aircraft tour that swings by in May/June. The Hornet is here all the time. California does have lots of options - north, south, and way north (sacto).

hornet is a great place to consider going, even possibly aranging for an overnite stay like the little middle schoolers and sea scout (done it with sea scouts, only problem is no internet, could be a day trip

May/June is nice in Sacramento, Week of Collins Foundation flying in would be a nice choice, HB555, Easyscor and I met up last time Collins flew in.
Still pulling together some rates, good time to book with reservations down.
Anyone want to add a golf day in the mix?
