Fyvsix and had a quick chat about this he made some good points, so I thought I would make a thread for this idea.
The point was raised that with all of the skins installed that the cache for them is over 200MG in size and that this would be somewhat inhibitive to performance to people with less powerful computers.
As many of our aircraft have reached or are about to reach their 15 skin limit I thought that the addition of an option to choose the size of the skin list that loads on your end.
Fyvsix put it perfectly.
Make like 4 check boxes.
1. No skins
2. 15 skins
3. 30 skins
4. Unlimited skins
People who care about the skins or have more powerful computers could select a higher number of skins to load.

How would they select which skins to put in the game, and how would people with higher skins checked's comp look on the ones with a lowered checked comp?
-
Good idea!
if you could create a download file to place the skins in that you wanted as your default load out or if it automatically just preloaded the 1 or 2 most popularly used skins for each plane first then that would be a way to determine what skins you have. anyone who is using a skin not loaded would just appear to have the default skin.

There are severeal bugs in this idea that would need to be worked out with HTC. I am not certain of the mechanics of the skin cache and how it works on the other's end.
If one has a fresh install of the game with no skins downloaded, they still see non-default skins, don't they?
Would it be a massive hit to people's computers if we doubled the available skin slots to 30? What would the symptoms be? A few micro-freezes when loading the extra 400-500KBs when an enemy (or friendly) aircraft comes into skin range?
-
I think it would be based upon the users Internet connection and how good their computer can handle everything.
-
Could you get to choose your own skins too? I'd probably drop a few current ones and put some others in and what not. I'd probably get rid of all the Spit skins as I never fly them, it may help my Frame Rate.
-
You can currently install only the skins you want to use/view and not have anymore than that installed.

In that case, the skins that another player is using, if you don't have it, you will see the default skin?
-
That is the way it works currently.

And besides, most of us disable other plane skins....... Or am I weird? That, in and of itself, can help the lower end boxes.
-
I've got them enabled, though my comp is at the highest end of comps...

Correct.
-
If that is the case, are we then able to increase the number of available skin slots and make them accessible via download only or something?
Thanks for the replies Skuzzy :salute

No. The number of skin slots for each plane/vehicle is fixed at 16 total. 15 custom skins and the default skin.

so we can put a different skin in, and remove one. But to other players it will be the default skin. correct?
-
As I understand it, if the skin isn't on their computer, the default will be displayed on their end.
So if the number of slots is fixed at 15 custom skins will it just be a matter of regular rotation once all of the custom slots become full?
Or will another option be explored?
Sorry to ask so many questions, by the way, I don't mean to annoy. :lol :salute
