Yes, non-convention goers, the topic did come up in the Dallas Q&A session.
No, it didn't start as a question from a rabid fan in the back row -- it showed up in HTs and Pyro's discussion of the kind of "garage projects" they've tinkered with and not completed!
I think it was Pyro who said they have roughed in the flight models of the Mig17 and F86, and that they weren't all that tough to put together. They've even included WW2 1946 imaginary setups in their internal list of "gee, wouldn't it be cool if" projects.
Again, the bottom line for the discussion was that HTC feels the workload of CT drew away from their core business in the arenas. They look at developing new planes the same way they look at advertising -- a necessary expense that gives a return even though it's devilishly hard to track the returns. As far as they're concerned it didn't seem to matter whether we're talking about the Saber or the Brewster, hot rod or "boutique" plane like the Brewster -- new stuff is part of the package.
So when the time comes, it wouldn't be all that surprising to see some interesting variations on the standard arena setups.

That is something I would really like to see happen. I enjoyed the Korean arena in AW very much, even though it wasn't very heavily subscribed. Well to be honest, it was often almost empty. But I do miss it, and would like to be able to fly the F86 once again.
Badboy <sighs and fights off a wave of nostalgia>

Well, if CT died so that we can eventually get some new arena action like WW1 or Korea, then I say that is a smart move for HTC and staff. And, if I had to choose one or the other, I would pick the WW1 and/or Korea over CT.
Over the last few days I've been playing an older WW1 title. I can't believe how fun it is! It is similar, but also alot different than the fighting we have in LW MA right now. I think it (or Korea for that matter) would be a terrific addition to the game, and I think it would attract a dedicated following.
Seems to me that HTC has already done all the hard work. Adding in some new planes should be relatively easy at this point.

I would pay an extra monthly fee for a WWI arena. Korean war... Not interested.

Im with Dave on the "WWI" era. Other than "MASH", I have no
interest in a Korean-Arena at all. "I'd walk a mile for a Camel."

What he said. I concur emphatically.
-
I think we have too many jets as it is!
-
Another vote for WWI.
-
Frankly, I think they are better off updating many of the portions of the game that have lagged. If anything, the CT experience showed they are better off being the best at one thing before trying to be everything. When you have limited resources own your core competency then consider other options.
-
I would fly them both. Bi-planes would be fun but the bases would have to be close together to keep interest.
Something about the slow speed of the camel. Korea we would get the chance to fly the last great dogfighters. Maybe throw in some AtoG stuff with the F4u5 and Skyraiders. How about the F2G1?? Let people fly for the US and see what its like to have telephone poles thrown at you from the ground. Or was that only in Vietnam. I don't remember if Korea had SAMs.
-
Cod, I remember Red Baron 3D. What fun that was online. YES!!! to WW1, Korean war...eh, not so much.

Korea = B29!!
And you know what that means!!!!

Korean war would be interesting, getting the F4U4C and doing ground attack, newer tanks, M-26 Pershing, F-86/Mig 15 would probably = Perk (There were reports of the Chinese/North Koreans flying P-63s during the Korean war, I'm also not sure about other planes)
WW1 would be good just because you honestly couldn't do too much more except fight honestly... (I bet it would be harder to win a Head On pass with only 1, or 2 .303 machine guns)
It would also be the type of thing to where if you rammed, you'd both die.

i like your thinking morph :D
korea would only be awesome if we had choppers.

B29s and F4U4s and Yak 9Ts and P51Hs and Migs to kill the B29s and F86s to kill the Migs. Whats not to like?

The F7F yes the F8 came out a little late for Korea. First flight for the Crusader was 1955.
But WWI planes would be more fun.

No... The F8 came out too late for WWII and didnt serve in Korea.

I'd love to see WW1 and Korea would be nice too. They would both best best to just leave them straight up dog fighting. Just some small maps and no need for any win the war stuff. Keep that in the WW2 arena's. Just keep them simple and fun and it wouldn't be a major distraction from the main game.
-
While I miss the Mig-15 and F-86 from AW Korea I miss the WWI Biplanes more. And might I add a Spanish Civil War arena would be fun too.

DOH! The bearcat didn't even enter my mind. I was thinking crusader from the get go. I blame old age for the lapse in memory. :O
A Skyraider would be sweet. Can you imagine the whines after shooting down someones MIG, or F86? :rofl

P-51Hs never saw any combat action in Korea, they weren't suitable for the combat role they were would be used in and the P-51D was more suited to the intended role.

It doesnt change the fact that the OP brought up imaginary combat. Whether we see the F8F or P51H ever would be up to the concept as HTC sees it.

I think a WW1 scenario would be a great idea. Playing Red Barron on the INN, Dawn of Aces, Red Barron 3D was a blast. The operation of the planes was less complicated. The dogfights seemed to be more enjoyable because of the slower pace and the fact that the distance between you and your opponent was closer..... really intense fighting. Ive flown some "jet" sims and it seems to me the speeds and alts or so great that you really don't see the enemy up close...which in turn makes the dogfighting less fun..... Thats not to say dogfighting A-10 Warthogs wouldn't be fun... :salute

Would be great to do problem if we add tanks how are we going to take them out without planes bombing them. :uhoh

I think both WWI and Korea would have some appeal, but realistically, what are the odds either would happen in the near future, and how much would this delay plane updates, the terrain changes, developing the AI for scenario use, perked ordinance/weapons, and all of the other projects that have been mentioned?

Glock you dont have to respond to every post that calls or asks for something you dont like and then spam it to death. If you keep that up and enough people complain you wont be able to post at all. Just saying.

Recently I've been rediscovering Red Baron 3D.
I bring this up because I've owned the game for about 10 years, but just recently, with a good stick, throttle, rudders, and TrackIR, have I really started enjoying this game.
Overwhelmingly, I've had two thoughts: First- it is hard to find the AI challenging after 18 months of seasoning on Aces High. That's not to say they can't put up a good fight; but, after fighting against unpredictable humans, the AI is just not comparable. Second- I find that the margin of error is alot smaller, and the principles of AH2 are exaggerated (sp?). Everything about the fight is closer in, and the tolerance of everything is smaller. You can't pull as hard, you have to use rudder alot more, your guns are less effective, but the effectiveness of guns is more devastating, you have to hawk your speed alot more, the difference between the BnZ and TnB planes is more noticable...it's the same fight...but different. 1000 feet of altitude literally dictates the fight.
Same with Mig Alley. The fights are different, but the same. You're going faster, have speed to burn, but ultimately it's the same principles at work. It is more work to get saddled. But, the jets make the differences in speed way spread out. You can have 200 knots overtake on an enemy and not notice it a mile out. It's like Aces High at x2 accelerated speed.
Again, I'm no coader, but I have to think that once you've coaded the environment for the planes, it's a matter of dropping in a flight model, skin and 3d model. None of this is reinventing the wheel like CT. Should it be rushed in? No. But, I think we'd all be surprised at the attraction a WW1 and/or Korea arena got, even not being fleshed out with a full planeset. Put in some F-86s and MiG-15s, open the arena, and I'll bet you'll see a following that sticks, if for no other reason than it's something new.
-
... your guns are less effective, but the effectiveness of guns is more devastating...
What? Sorry I followed nearly everything else you said but this lost me.
-
Think he means the planes are not built as well. Wood, & canvas don't take much to break.
Guns are not as effective as WWII .50's and 20mm's. But they don't need to be either.

Most of them were on top of the biplanes wings i think.

Uh... no. Most of them were upper cowl mounted directly in front of the pilot.
[EDIT] Note the gun mount position on this Sopwith Camel:

Some WW1 aircraft did in fact have a gun mounted on the top of the wing. The German's developed the interruptor gear that allowed pilots to fire through the prop without blowing the prop apart. It wasn't long after the Germans started using cowl mounted guns that the Allies also began installing them. I might be wrong, but I believe that the British captured a downed German aircraft and essentially stole the technology.
Here is a photo of an SE-5a, which was a pretty successful British fighter, with a wing mounted Lewis gun.

The Neuport also had a top mounted gun but the fact remains that most were cowl mounted.

Wasn't disagreeing, just adding some info to the conversation.
-
one cool thing about those SE5s was you could slide the gun down that bar so it was pointing up to belly shoot bombers. I think also that the model which found success at dogfighting also had a single cowl mounted vickers. could be wrong.

Also necessary for reloading the gun with a fresh drum.
-
didnt know that, must have been a cold job standing up at 5000ft, or could they do it all seated?

Can't really tell in the image that I posted, but I believe that they could fire the weapon via an odd remote trigger contraption. I imagine that reloading could be accomplished while seated, but the pilot probably had to stand up briefly to toejam the Lewis gun down the rail so he could reach it while seated.
-
No it could be unlatched from the seated position and the grip was in easy reach of any normal sized man. I believe all Se5s had two guns the cowl mg being the opposite side of the fuselage in the picture you posted. It would be very difficult to fire and fly if the mg were released for reloading but I suppose it could be done. I doubt many bombers or fighters were so unwary as to sit still for that and even when both guns were used the top gun fired parallel so there was no convergence. The Se5 was a great BNZ plane and once slow it didnt turn exceptionally well. Fokker DVIIs would have their way with them having more engine and more concentrated fire power (guns that converged).
