Title: Forum Ignore feature
Post by: hubsonfire on October 31, 2008, 10:03:05 PM
Let's be honest- some people are just so damned stupid, that even reading what they type will make you dumber. (That's a fact- look it up.)
We need the ignore feature, for the overall mental well-being of the community.

Yes.   Now the CT has been deep-6'd, come on HTC give us this feature for the BBS.

If they weren't paying customers, some folks wouldn't even be allowed to post here. There's a reason they have a squelch feature in game, had it in the last incarnation of the forums, and should, IMO, have it again on the current forum. If you don't feel the same way, that's fine- but no one's asking for your opinion on the matter.

Let's look at the My Little Pony Arena forums as a perverse example- Despite the fact that it is a forum dedicated entirely to crappy plastic animals made in the third world, the general composition and content of the posts eclipses the majority of what's posted on this forum, and most topics don't include a smiley in every single post, let alone half a dozen smilies per post.

If a bunch of freaks collecting toys can come across as halfway literate, sane, and competent, then surely it's not asking too much out of a bunch of grown men. If it is too much to ask (and perhaps it is), then an ignore feature would be nice, just as it was in the past.

been asking for that feature since the new BBS. would love to have it back, some times it's nice to forget some people exist.

.....Or click a BBS newbies thread and see the pathetic use of grammar (glock and many others) and their Primary Language of English?   Seems easier to me to go to a list and start ignoring their useless sense of being.

:rofl Hub reads the My Little Pony forums.  Yes, it would be a great feature.  I thought Skuzzy said it wasn't a feature we could have since they switched to the new BBS.  I could be wrong, but I could swear I read that.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I'd like to have the ignore feature reintroduced, although a simple IQ or literacy test would accomplish the same thing.

Might as well just go to your Call home and type: ignored then list the names. This way those people will get the hint when they actually are ignored. The more you feed the trolls and even make their presence known the more they are going to be accomplished. Ignore those people no matter what drivel they write and help them get the hint that they are not accepted here with the behavior they have. Its up to the community to come down on these types as one unless we get this feature. Shades and non payers shouldn't be allowed here though. I agree with that.            Nitro

It's kind of hard when they usually post incoherent sentences or spam smilies in every thread.

I agree, bring back the ignore feature.

Here's one; DON'T FEED THE ANIMALS.

All you have to do is not reply or acknowledge them in any way. That way their posts can never hijack a thread, and eventually they will learn the proper etiquette. This technique originated as a method of combating forum trolls, and is very useful for converting idiots into literate people. Another way to take care of this, is to impose a 2-week/read x number of topics requirement prior to being able to post, except for in the support section. As far as I know, this has never technically been implemented anywhere, but it often serves as an unofficial social requirement.

NO

If you can't handle what someone's said, it your own bloody problem.  I don't mean to be offensive, but IMO this it true.  If you find a person annoying/stupid enough to make you want to ignore them WITH AN IGNORE FEATURE, then stop being lazy and ignore them yourself.

I'll just take a moment to point out that this isn't a discussion, and you really don't have any say in the matter regardless. If you think it's great that the forum is filling up with half witted kids, fine. I don't feel the same.

Funny that some don't want others to have the choice to ignore, i.e. block out, individual bbs users.  That says a lot.

Hubs don't you think leaving the tards on their own would just amplify their crap once they were isolated? Like removing banks of trees from the edge of a sand desert?

Yeah, well I was in an exceptionally bad mood that day, and also that guy put what amounted to porn in the thread, so I seized my opportunity.

It is a discussion, and I have just as much say as you do (i.e. very little, since at the end of the day it's HTC's call as to whether he wants to put this feature in or not).

With an ignore feature, I'd never really know. Victory enough.  ;)

Let me preface this with, this isn't directed at anyone specifically in this thread....

That said, what we really need is a content ignore feature.

I find that there are more then one type of useless poster.  Here are a few of the types I would like to ignore.

1) The village idiot/Pre-pubescent tard
2) Mr Smiley Face man:  Every post consists of nothing but one or more smiley faces
3) Mr I've been flying flight sim games since before the Wright Brothers were born, so I know everything and nothing anyone who hasn't been flying flight sim games since before the Wright Brothers were born has anything worth reading to say, so I will take it upon myself to redicule those posters every time I have the opportunity.

So rather then a hamfisted "Ignore User" function, I dream of a filtering system that will weed out the useless posts without blocking the occaisional bit of wisdom that might come from #3 when he/she comes down from his/her high horse to spend a moment with the unwashed masses.

He's always been a "hypocrite", it's why I laugh at his teenage dimwitted remarks to the rest of the Community.   When he moves out of his parents basement and has to work for a living, he'll understand.

If you want a board feature request, you best come with a link to the ready made mod.  I'm sure the Skuzster has too many duties to be scripting custom mods.

You gents need to get after this Rudolf person to confirm his Ignore User Mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=185) for compatibility with SMF 1.1.4.
