EA stock is taking a beating right now, maybe its time to put in your bid, maybe they'll let it go. Too bad time has passed it by so much that it wouldnt be viable even if you could get EA to let it go.

Yeah.
It would need to be totally rewritten.
I think AWDOS/AW4W was better than AW2/3 though. I'm not sure why... the others had more features. I suppose old habits..

Thanks for pointing that out, your insights are invalueable, and please excuse for me reminiscing for just a moment.
Nobody thinks its coming back its, a great memory why bash it why not just stay out of it.
-
You can pry the memories of Air Warrior from my cold, dead fingers .. dweeb :)
I'll 'let it go' about a year or so after I am dead.
Maybe.

Hmmm, gotta wonder why you chose to stop in and make comments if you are really sick of it. The subject of the thread clearly states what it's about. Yet you chose to read and comment anyway??? Obviously, you care. Jealous? :devil

What's wrong with a bunch of old guys reminiscing about old times? Air Warrior was a precursor to Aces High. Many thanks to HiTech and crew for giving us venue to continue what we started in Air Warrior. I've only been back about 2 weeks now and am proving to be quite unteachable! et

Well I think we were perhaps going to have a normal conversation about an old game we used to play but some annoying little kid is pushing his persona into the conversation. I understand thats how you get attention. Just go do it somewhere else huh?

Bip, at some point, this silly game will be DEAD, and with luck, you will be long in the tooth and missing the camaraderie you shared. Also, there will, with luck, be some snot nosed kid giving you grief should you be so stupid as to mention it.
-
Bipolar, your name fits...
Need some Lithium?
Air Warrior is dead only because EA bought the rights then dropped it because it wasn't a cash cow.
I don't think anyone is arguing the fact that the game is gone.
If it had not been around AH, Warbirds and WW2OL would have never existed.
Games come and go, evolve and die. AW was bound to go out sometime, it isn't about the game as much as the memories. Any game you really enjoy and play for a long period of time you will think back on.
I started a few years after it first came out on dos right before the windows version. I still remember reading the readme and guide that came with the download. I remember thinking "one day I will be as good as some of these guys I am reading about".
I studied and read everything I could on aerial combat and the game. I'd always had an interest in WW2 and especially Aerial combat so I was drawn into the game quickly. I questioned everyone and listened to every tip they would give and attended just about any chat/interview with 'ace pilots' and took notes.
I was in my teens so I am not sure if that is why I was so encompassed in the game or because even online text chatting was cool back then, flying the virtual skies seemed like a miracle. Either way, it was a very fun time in my life and I was instantly addicted. My parents jaws dropped when they saw how much my game cost them though lol. I had to basically get a job to support my AW playing. :P
Eventually it came out on AOL though and I quickly switched my ISP to play for free. I remember the Turkey Hams, Cactus Airforce, Internet Daemons and so many other Squadrons. A lot of peoples names are getting blurry and I am forgetting them but every time I spend a bit of time to think back on Air Warrior I remember more and more names. I never got into AW2 or 3 nearly as much as the original.
-
"If it had not been around AH, Warbirds and WW2OL would have never existed."
Not saying anything about AW being dead and gone or otherwise but your point above is akin
to saying that if it weren't for the Wright brothers there would not have been powered flight...
There were already companies and groups working on air combat games and with multiplayer
capability. Kesmai did it first in a BIG way. But if they had not someone would have within a
year or few of when they did.

Considering HiTech was an AW player that went on to create two of those three games, I don't think that it's an unreasonable argument. I can think of lots of quotes off the top of my head where the experience as an AW player has influenced decisions on the game mechanics of AH.
-
"flying the virtual skies seemed like a miracle."
Exactly. It was like a miracle to fly against live opponants especially after years of flying box sims against AI.
Crappy grahics and too expensive, and I couldn't get enough of it. No matter how great AH becomes in the future, I'll never forget the rush I got from AW in the early 90's. Even a hyper misbehaving squeaklette attention addict can't ruin the great memories.
-

Correct. What I was refering to is the actual concept of all of these games aside from ww2ol closely follows AWs model. Most of the people working on these projects were former air warriors. Even Docdoom/Killer in WW2OL.
Of course similar games would have eventually came out but they probably would have been vastly different than what we have today.
-
change 'within a year' to 'perhaps in a decade ..or two'
No one knew how to do it when Kelton figured it out.
There were no other online 3d-games ..anywhere.
Even Wolfenstein/Quake/Duke Nukem came after AW.
As for online air combat .. Fighter Duel ..came well after AW.
And it was 1-1.
AW was 30 people flyin an fightin in 3d back when text-based adventure games on BBS systems was the norm.
There wasn't even a 'web' then.
Internet Explorer was still years away, much less the watershed that AOL was to 'normal' people who had never heard of the term 'online' much less 3d gaming :)

It was fun to fly inside the pyramids, though not all that easy on depth perception surrounded by the solid brown pyramid facets.

Just curious, do you think the guys who made AW would re-introduce it into the flight sim world if EA let it go? Or am I missing something here?

There isn't "the guys". The whole studio was shut down in Sept 01. No doubt everyone went different directions to pursue their careers. The core game code needed redone from scratch anyways. It had become tempremental from years of being patched over from what I understood.

Ah, I wonder what they do now?

Huh... I wonder what AW we'd be on this year if it was still around? AW5? AW6 maybe?

At the rate that they updated things.....more like AW4.5. :)

Scroll down to the bottom of this thread: http://www.airwarrioronline.com/forum/index.php?topic=293.0 (http://www.airwarrioronline.com/forum/index.php?topic=293.0), and download the files linked in the last post, if you want to play AW4.
I installed the files, I had to set something to compatibility mode (or it MIGHT have been disable some graphics option), but Air Warrior does run on Windows XP.

That's not AW4...it was never released. That's just AW 3 Millennium Version of the game.

Ah, I wonder what they do now?
Well, it's no surprise what GE is up to since he posted what he's currently doing since leaving the gaming industry. Last I heard Jeff Hanna (Quarters) had left Mythic Entertainment soon after it was bought out by EA and moved to THQ, though not sure if he's still there. BB (Blue Baron) went to work at Microsoft, think doing some stuff on the original Xbox, but not sure if he's still doing that. If anyone can find it, BB had written a wonderful essay on how important an online community is to a game, very insightful not only from a developers point of view but also for the player.
Dose stuck around EA but I think he finally left a few years ago, probably got tired of being blamed for everything but as we all know, it really is his fault.
Don't know what happened to Mage, though he did play AH for a couple of months during the Exodus after AW shut down.
Not sure what Kelton Flinn is up to these days but he definitely is a pioneer of online gaming.

Last I chatted with Steve he was out of the industry. He was managing an electronics store, and was looking to own a franchise with that chain. It's been a few years though.

Glad to hear that he's doing well, despite what the majority of the community thought about him, I always thought of him as a good guy that was used as a scape goat by the community.

I never held anything against Mage or Kato or Dose .. we were all in the same 'boat' that went down.
The people that spouted pure BS proved beyond a doubt what they were about.
It sucked to be a part of, and sucked more to read all the BS posted by people who knew better.
The classic 'AW will continue' . . -rolls eyes- . . ya.. right.

Nice to see you too, Ack-Ack <S> Husband and son both doing OK. :) As for the rest of the Kraits, recently heard from Spiffy, Ravs, Trip, Kev, Hellhawk, Fox on our mailbot, but only Fox and Hellhawk still fly here occasionally. I believe Kev was going to come back too but his GameID came back invalid when I tried to send a squad invite. I recently reformed the squad in AH as it was a victim of Skuzzy's cleanup campaign and I didn't want to see it disappear! :)
