Title: F4U-4C
Post by: hodag on November 07, 2008, 04:28:44 AM
F4U-4C might be a better plane than the tempest. I know they only made a few hundred of them but it would be a hell of a fighter. We have more Spit variants than Hogs so why not.

Post-war variant, not gonna happen. Too bad, too. A 4-Hog with 20mm would be wicked.  :O

Anyway, the F4U-4 is already a better plane than the Tempest.

This indicates it was put in service during the war. It doesn't say that specifically about the 4C but it looks like it. Any chance you're wrong about it being post war? Flying either the 1C or the -4 is a blast, I can only imagine a 4C.

The F4U-4 we have in the game was the last variant to see combat during the war. Anything after that came after Japan's surrender.

Had the US Navy worked out the problems with their version of the Hispano II by the the time of the F4U-4C?

That does no such thing.  It indicates the F4U-4 was in service in WWII, and so it was and we have it.  It does not say the F4U-4C was in service in WWII.  There are some photos of F4U-1Cs on operations against Okinawa mislabeled as F4U-4Cs out there, so be careful when looking at that stuff.

Ahhh, it says Produced during the war years. Oh well, can't have them all.

I think we need one exception to the rules so we can have the Bearcat.  :pray

From http://www.voughtaircraft.com/heritage/products/html/f4u-4.html

"The new airplanes had a gross (combat) weight of 12,420 pounds and, in the cannon version, carried four 20 millimeter cannons, armed with 924 rounds each."

924 rounds each?  Must be a typo?

Maybe 924 rounds per side.

IIRC, the F4U-4C didn't have the Hispano, it had it's own American made 20mm gun.

Same gun 1plus, just a different name.

The American version had some small flaw, however, that made it a poor weapon when mounted in the wings, with jamming issues and such.  That's why the P-38 successfully had the M2 mounted in the nose!

Not really.  P-38s had the same problem that was basically solved with lots of grease.  For some reason we refused to adopt the British solution of changing the chamber length by about 1-2mm (I don't recall if it was longer or shorter off hand).  Wing mounted guns of all kinds are more prone to jamming.
