I was just wondering. I am mortified to use it but I feel as though I've put so much effort to earn the points so I can fly it. Knowing me I'll auger the sob.
(it took so long because I fly 51d and kid swears he didn't know the f4u-1c was a perk plane)
Should I wait till I have double the points maybe?
When did y'all take the plunge and were you satisfied after the wait?

I'd tool around with it offline for a while first.

I would wait till you have some perks to fall back on and go to the TA and fly it awhile get used to its flight characteristics then give it a whirl.<S> good luck :rock

I took the plunge back in 78 (tour that is).
I was all excited and proceeded to grab a 262 at a field, got on the runway, then hit a hill with a lot of trees at the end of the runway. :D :o
Since then, I always get into an external view (F3) in the tower or on the runway and take a look around first. :)

yea go offline and fly first, don't be like me and rip the wings off 2 mins after take off.

If you have the patience, waiting till you have double the points is no bad idea. Dropping back to 0 perks increases the frustration.
And you really should fly it extensively offline / in TA first. Learn to go to the limits, see how quickly you get so fast your wings will rip off.
And very important: Practice one-engined landings! They are more difficult in a 262 than in prop planes, and losing one or two engines is a very common occurence in 262's
The story of my own first 262 flight is a short one. I tried to ho a 190A-8... :uhoh

I got in my first 262, climbed a little, saw a con below me, dived in, the controls locked up and I lawn darted it. There went all my perks. I waited until I had enough for two of them the next time.

I flew it as soon as I had enough perks to get one (I usually don't have enough, I doubt I do right now). I topped off the ol' fuel tank, took her up for a fantastic flight, dove towards an enemy plane and promptly planted it like a seedling tree. The good news was that I was able to water my new sapling with my tears. So I say go for it, knock yourself out, it's only a cartoon plane and the pain goes away quicker than you might think.

I would wait until you have a little over twice as many because once you lawndart the first one you will want to take it up again. If you want to get allot of perks fast fly a 109G14, mossy, or a 190A8 into a furball and target low ENY planes. If you do good you can get 30-40perks per sortie.

Use it, crash it, feel less nervous next time. Rinse, repeat.. First jet was on free perk night when they added the 262.
I landed a 262 that was so ripped up that AKAK thought it was safe to let it fly off :P

I was actually surprised how well it handles when it happened to me.. when wings popped I thought "oh well im toast". then a second later go "wait a sec, its still flyin.. leseee here.... . " :D

Follow the "wait until you practice more, but bank a few more perks." As you probably know the Perk value is amoebic in that you'll never know "How much you'll need."
Practice in the TA. Practice diving, turning (try to find you comfort zone).

lol Larry that was how I lost my wing tips on that movie I show ya. some La-7 hoed me, i rolled and he collided. He lost part of his wing so he went in for a ditch. He touch down and was slowing down. I wasn't going to let him get away. I was at 7k or so doing 450 knts, I saw him ditching, nosed over and went straight down full power in a split S. I fired a short burst while I was at 3k lol. It took him down, but I couldn't pull up. I remember I was approaching 700 knts my wing tip came off. I chop throttle, trimmed elevator up all the way, and skid rudder to slow down. I pulled out of the dive at about 200 feet and bugged out. I didn't have enough fuel to go far so I landed at the air field that was under attack.

i had had 2 sorties in 262 ( no kills :cry)
but on my third i forgot to put landing gear up and i was forced to try to belly land.
well one of my wings hit a hill (lost too much speed tryin to land) so i lost a wing 20 feet before runway
i start flat spinning the body hits the runway and slides (im thinking im gonna make it) but i slide too much and im 5 feet from concrete :cry :cry :cry
so i lost half my 200 perks and yeah..... im not gonna be able to fly 262 for a while... :cry :cry :cry :cry

my first 262 i landed but no kills couldnt aim the flipin thing. however i practiced flying it first and landing it. landing a 262 is also a little tricky so i would say practice with the 262 first in the Training arena. see if you can hook up with a trainer.
i am not saying i have never crashed or locked up a 262 it just wasnt my first one

Well they may tell you what to do, before you fly it in the MA, but here is what I do most of the time. Stay NOE, the best way to fly it, is fast and low. Take it in a large dar area, your going to get most kills first in an area with lots of cons. Don't turn it, you can dip wings for an attempt pick, but don't turn it, garuntee that you will lose perks by turning. Do a lot of extending, most of my kills come from noobs that follow you, the best thing to do there is to go stright up, and rope them, extend 1 notch of flaps, and roll over. You will see that he has stalled out, and its an easy kill.
Thats the best way to fly it.
Here are the don'ts of not flying it:
1. Do not pick, your going to lose wings by doing that.
2. Do not take off in an area were there is high cons, it may be fast, but it's not a ball of fire on take off, its very slow, and hard to acually get flying.
3. If you think its going to be close, your going to ram. 99% of the time, you forget about the speed and ram into a zeke doing 150mph. (I've done it)
Thats the best advise I could give you how to fly it in the MAs.

I've lost two 262,s one was when I thought I would see how she went as a dogfighter at 160 MPH :D Got kilt by a Corsair via a pilot kill.
The other, I lost on takeoff, when I decided to skim across the ground and failed to see a tree (was still slow and nose high) :D

I agree with the poster that said to ride it till she's dead.
It's better to just get over the "fear of losing it" hurdle right away. It makes it alot more fun later on when you realize that losing 250 perks by diving on some crappy ENY 30 plane isn't the end of the world after all.
And, it's always nice to water the trees with your tears (great line man).

Funny thing is almost every time I trying flying safe with it I would end up dead or come back home with one or two kills tops. Then when I was going to change my name I knew I was ganna lose all my perks so I went on a perk point spending spree. When I flew then on the deck HOing everything in sight I couldn't die.
If its your first time flying it get get over the fact that you will lose it and just have fun while you're in it. Climb up to about 5-6k so you can outrun anything diving in on you and just fly around. If you take it up high and fly safe then you'll end up with no kills or end up compressing it into the ground.

My first several 262 hops I ripped the wings off in banks. My first sortie where I actually got to altitude I dove on a set of b-26s and after tearing up the air around them I politely lawndarted. finally landed my first sortie a few months ago with 6 bomber kills and I almost soiled myself from the glee. It's a fragile bird.

Don't bother blowing your perks on a 262, you will likely be dissappointed by the results you will get if you are a new player.

Sums it up. when I had to delete SpikesX I simply couldn't die. had 10K perks to burn and it took me 4 nights...with about 5 hours each. All I flew were 262s and Temps. I HO'ed everything in sight, upped at vulch fests. flew through CV ack, you name it I did it...only died about 10 times or so...

Klinks rule for 262's.........never buy a 262 new,....get it at a yard sale (i never buy if they are over 150 perkys) Never fly a 262, unless you have perks to buy at LEAST 2 more. Cause your gonna be left feeling like a crack fiend, with no money plus - feeling stupid for that dumb move you just pulled in the jet. ODdly, enough, you'll want another. :O Don't stoop to begging for perks,... Keep and eye on your speed, wings rip off fairly easy at 700-800 mph. Everyone will want to kill, you,...at any cost. closure rate is alarming, first 100 flights or so in it.Its very hard to kill anything in it. Other than that ,...it is a blast. :rock

Actually really easy IF there are no cons around the field you land at. All you need is to watch the speed, plan abit ahead and line up using rudder. Only time i ever failed landing one without wingtips is when i tried on a carrier that started turnining.

I would goto the training arena and test it out. See how it flies and learn its limits. Maybe get a friend to go there with you or ask a trainer for some tips. If you only have enough points for 1 then you might want to bank more. Good luck to you. :salute

i just lost one last night to 1 hispano round....maybe it was 2 hispano rounds, but i lost my whole tail...only had 103 perkies left over :cry as far as the bank more perkies go, your bound to get a spit lucky shot with a couple hispanos, or any bird even, and light you up, lose an engine, wing, PW, whatever...so, definitly bank more perkies
