I got this via email today and thought it was at the very best a funny little dig at the Iranian controllers. I have no idea if it was true and do not believe it to be true but it is still funny.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to a Marine Pilot, in addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control facility, all aircraft in the Persian Gulf Area Of Responsibility (AOR) are required to give the Iranian Air Defense Radar (military) a ten minute "heads-up" if they will be transiting Iranian airspace.
This is a common procedure for commercial aircraft and involves giving them a call sign, transponder code, type aircraft, point of origin, and destination.
I just flew with a guy who overheard this conversation on the radio (VHF Guard {emergency} frequency 121.5 MHz) while he was flying from Europe to Dubai. It's too good not to pass along.
The conversation went something like this . . .
Iranian Air Defense Radar: "Unknown aircraft at (location unknown), you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself."
Aircraft: "This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace."
Iranian Air Defense Radar: "You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!"
Aircraft: "This is a United States Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet. Send 'em up, I'll wait!"
Iranian Air Defense Radar: (no response . total silence)

lol, I bet he had a long wait.

ummm, yea i think i would bet the iranian AD controllers where try to find volunteers.
-
This sounds a little more realistic to me, after all, the Iranians seems like the type to try to intimidate.
-
Denholm you Iranian?

Why would I say, "seem" if I were?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That's great!

We haven't fought a "great air force" since 1945.
The Iranian performance wouldn't be much better then the Iraqis could muster. Maybe worse. Air Forces in that region are substandard. Even the Turks, a NATO country, watching them fly and then watching our guys was like night and day. Its the reason little Israel has been able to dominate their many enemies. The Iranians could have been good had they stayed allies and used Yank equipment and doctrine, "remember they are the only ones we ever sold 14s to", but they didn't. And they aren't!
We have a huge, tho silent, air forces presence in the region. Most of all in Iraq. And very soon it will by Iraqi Pilots, trained by us, flying our airplanes, that the Iranians will have to worry about. That, and if you look at the Political/Military of US/Allied forces in the region and you see we have Iran flanked. And we control much of the regions transportation, choke points, waterways, and most importantly "water". Zip up a map of the region, see the disposition of forces and alliances, and you get a true picture of the Bush master plan against terror. Brilliant really. We split Iran from Syria and flanked them both.
Or if you want, throw a shoe or spittle out whatever everyone else is spitting out and be a good little drone. I'll tell you one thing. The Iranians can see what I'm talking about and thats why they have been such good neighbors, "overtly anyways", and why they are spending such a fortune on defense.

Two things if this 'alleged conversation' actually took place I would salute the pilot but Im sure he would be a civilian again.

Ever known a Marine? Ive seen USAF pilots pull a lot crazier things then this and never get in any trouble for it. My guess is his unit gave him a big back slap, including his C/O, when he landed. My guess is our GPS/Radar system locational devices are a lot better then the Iranians and we aren't about to trust their version. Marines are supposed to want to fight. Theres no way this Pilot would get into trouble for this.
Right now Yank pilots are not only flying strike missions but they are effectively the Iraqi Air Force, flying AD for Iraq. Also our pilots are given a lot of leeway, which translates into a squadron C/O of a fighter group being pretty much a law unto himself. Nobody else would discipline this marine and his C/O wouldn't think of it. The Pilot was simply doing his job and if the Iranians would have launched jets he would have stayed and fought.

Yes I know a lot of military but I was thinking of the current climate domestically (staying vague).

My guess is most Americans simply wish the I-ranians would have launched their fighters. I know I do. But I was within jabo range of the place back in Nov. '79 and I have a long memory.

Iran has always had issues with not accurately knowing where their airspace and waterway borders are. And always these discrepancies are in Iran's favor. They intimidate if you question otherwise, so the best responce is usually your own intimidation or a stiff lip.
That Marine's responce was 10/10.

Reminds me of the story of the CHP officer supposedly that was "locked on" by a Marine F/A-18 (flown by Adonai?) near Mirimar that made the rounds a year or so ago.
ack-ack

You mean the British Bobbys lidar locked on by the Tornado Gr4....or the Australian highway patrolmans lidar locked on by the RAAF F/A-18...the cop and the Harrier, the cop and the F-15, the lighthouse and the carrier etc etc etc

Sounds completely made up story.
Don't underestimate some of the arab middle eastern pilots. The Israeli pilots considered the Jordanians to be very good, though they are somewhat of an exception for using western equipment and have roots in the RAF. True, last fight with them was in 1967, but they seem to keep a small and well trained force.

Why yes Sir I have....I can tell you this from personal experience. When you're riding in a C&C vehicle and the radio guy chimes in and says, "Sir, I have the F-18's or Cobra's on the hook that are our cover" you get a nice warm and fuzzy feeling inside.
Is the story made up? Possibly, most likely, but I can still see some of those guys saying that. My last unit was in the 2nd MAW in Iraq and one my Lt. had a few friends that were fighter jocks, those guys are a trip.

It does not matter what he, or everybody else believes, in internet it will live forever.
Maybe it'll be found in snopes.com, like this:

It would not suprise me if this was real. I have been on several deployments transiting the straights where the Iranians regularly "lock on" to vessels with their Silk Worm sites as well as other types of surface targeting missile batteries. They like to intimidate anyone that transits, its just a matter of time till someone calls their bluff..... :lol

Iran has a much more capable Air Defense network compared to the fighters/intercept aircraft they operate.
Although this sounds like a "cool" scenario (almost TopGun like), I would imagine this is completely untrue..
Iran knows exactly where it's borders are.. However, as known throughout history, Persians have always considered the first several miles
of surrounding countries as sort of a buffer zone. They like to call this their airspace or their waters. I'm sure if an unknown aircraft
goes beyond this point, surface to air missiles are readied, not aircraft.. They have absolutely nothing that can touch a moderately
advanced air force. Aside from all the propaganda they release, their equipment is substandard for the most part.. Especially their air force..
A more likely scenario would be a pilot straying close to this buffer zone, and then being warned to back-off before they attempt a lock-on with
their surface to air missiles..

Correct me If Im wrong but the entire Jordainian force of 24 Hawker/Hunters were wiped out on the ground on 5 June '67. Heres the final count for the 6 day war.
Country Number
Egypt 338
Syria 61
Jordan 29
Iraq 23
Lebanon 1
Approx Total Arab 452
Israel 36
But lets not "underestimate" the A-rabs by any means. :lol

Try opening up one of those things with binders on, that have pages in between, and say "History" on the cover. If you cant do that then just use google.
