What do you think is the top 5?
5. F4U
4. Spitfire
3. P-51
2. F4 Phantom
1. F-15 Eagle
Why did I pick the F-15 eagle to be the number 1? It's seen more than 20 years of service, and has a k/d ratio of air to air combat of like 150 to 0
-
5. Mosquito
4. Republic P47 Thunder Bolt
3. Grumman F6F Hellcat
2. BeauFighter
1. F15
IMO these are what I would Pick, Same Reasons For the Eagle :aok
PS. Top 5 Is Really Hard to Choose wish you could Have made it top Ten :)
-
F14 has to be one of them. Over 20 years of service, the USN's premier multi role fighter. Track 24 targets at a time, honestly of Dick Cheney wasn't a ..well...you know...it would be and SHOULD be in service today.

Yes I do agree The Tomcat Deserves A Good spot, But it really is hard to choose for me. there are many great aircraft to Pick from and we only get Five.

- C-47
- Ju-52
- B-17
- IL-2
- 747

I thought about it myself. And I should have edited it to "fighters" as if it's planes, the B-52 should be up there at number 1 instead of the F-15.

1. Boeing B-52 This plane will see at least 80 years of service before it's gone completely. By FAR the best combat aircraft ever built.
2. Boeing 707 This plane led the way for comercial jet aviation, not to mention the various military versions that are still in service, AWACS, JSTARS, KC-135. This plane will also see at least 80 years of service if not more.
3. Boeing 747 The Grand Daddy of the super jumbos. Over 40 years in service and this airframe is STILL in production.
4. Douglas DC-3 Rock solid design that has withstood war and peace time missions. After over 70 years of flying, they are still out there doing what they were designed to do.
5. Lockheed SR-71 This plane set so many records it's not even funny. On it's last official flight it set a new world speed record. The technological achievments alone brought about by this plane earn it a place in the top 5 greatest.

In no particular order:
Concorde
SR 71
Harrier
Rutan's Voyager
Space Shuttle
X 15
-
1. SR-71 Blackbird : It's still the fastest <known> aircraft. lightyears ahead of its time
2. F-14 Tomcat : I think we are all well aware of its awesome capabilties even if its image was tarnished slightly by that midget cruise
3. P-51 Mustang : Took on every other enemy aircraft of the time and beat them all...again ahead of its time
4. F-15 Eagle : Designed to beat a soviet aircraft that eisted but wasn't the plane the U.S. thought it was (Mig 25 foxbat). Ahead of its time and has a exlempary combat record
5. A-10 Warthog : the grunts best freind. When your in the poop and in a tight spot nothing like calling in close in air support when nothing less than 30mm depleted uranium will do to completely devastate that pesky tank giving you the drizzily squirts.
They have a show on the military channel where they list the top 10's of different military hardware. I ussually dont agree with most of their assumptions especially regarding aircraft.
as a side note, I thought the space shuttle wasn't considered a aircraft but a sub-orbital glider. Doesnt meet the requirements for a aircraft

B-52. All 5.

I think I got the rules right :
1- an american plane
2- another american plane
3- I'm thinking of an american plane
5- yet another american plane
and yes I don't know how to count.
-
Somebody else builds planes?
-
F4U should be on that list. Especially the -4, which is arguably the best American fighter of WWII.
-
Somebody else builds planes?
You mean American planes ?
I think American planes are made by American (well likely:p)

1. the Flyer (name given to the Wright Brothers 1st plane to obtain flight)
2. Spirit of St. Louis
3. Bell X-1

Yes, but nothing worth talking about....

1. FW-190 series

3. Hellcat
4. F-15
5. P-47
-
I seriously could not name 5 without breaking it down into eras. WW1, WW2, Korean, and such....
-
F-15 pwns the worlds best and we are replacing it with the F22, US planes dominate the skies for atleast the next 20 years. This is why my top 5 are all American

I agree with you 100%. It's really a shame that most of the membership doesn't actually read about the history of flight. But, let's wave the flag all we can.
1. The Wright Flyer. Started it all.
2. Me-262 For obvious reasons.

1. The Flyer
- The most famous one of the first flying machines
2. Me262
- The concept of jet engines was invented in the early 30's, but it's potential wasn't understood until the 262.
3. Boeing 707
- The first of the bigger passenger jets and it was first flown in december 1957.
4. Boeing 307
- The first passenger plane with a pressurized cabin. First flight just before 1939.
5. Fokker Eindecker
- The first true fighter plane

5. Fieseler Storch FI-156 (It remains famous to this day for its excellent STOL performance)
my small List ;)

DC3/C47. I don't know that any other bird has had such a worldwide impact and is still working after 70 years
-
Curtiss or Bleriot...they had it going after the Wright Brothers
Dc-3, a surprizingly early breakthrough in commercial aviation as well as military workhorse.
Spitfire/109, - the fighters of 1939 with nothing challenging them.
The F-15 Eagle, - No challenge in combat history.
The 747, - unbeatable workhorse.
5 slots is too little....

That's why I went w/ the all so popular 10 :D

Agreed Mr. Gup. The C47 is still hauling cargo. I spoke w/ a guy who flew one in South America w/o A/C.

Hi RATTFINK,
you where on Holidays here ??
I live aprox 44miles west from Bodensee (Lake Constance), exact on the edge between Switzerland & Germany
on the german side, Zurich on the swiss side is aprox 18miles south from here. Did you visit Friedrichshafen at Bodensee?
you know where the Zeppelins where build, and since you visited in August did you catch the "Seenachtfest" on Bodensee?
you know the Lake festival with big fireworks, a really good show.
Btw. a very good point here if you are into Paragliding, 1 hour driving to the East and you are at the Austria alps, to the South
are the Switzerland alps and to the West are the French alps :)

1 P-51
2 B-52
3 SR-71
4 C-47
5 Fokker D-VII
The Me-262 was not effective in war with all the problems it had. Instead of the Camel you should mention the SE5a but even it doesnt match the D-VII. The SR-71 was never touched and thats all you need to say. Without the C-47 China and Berlin (post-war) would have been lost to the allies. The Mig-21 is still seen today which says a lot about its versatility but it still hasnt accomplished much for all its history. F-14 and F-16 share a lot of the same history... under their watch Americans were safe. P-38 was good but not great.
-
The Curtiss Pusher (ailerons, a tail and conventional controls)
The Eindecker (point the plane, pull the trigger)
The B-17 (mfg, strategy, precision high alt bombing)
The Constellation (long range international over water passenger service)
The VF-22 Osprey (the marriage of the helicopter and the Fixed wing)

Mig-15 should be #7.
Maybe a shared slot for Mig an F86?
The real reason the F-86 did so well and shot down so many migs, is only because of Pilot training. If they had equivelent training for both sides, it would have been much different.
-
LOL!
if a pig had wings it would still be a pig.
and there would still be a debate about where in the list it should be.
-
From the rules: "Posting topics or threads which are based on ..., ..., or ... is expressly forbidden."
Nevertheless:
1) IL-2 ( it's who won WW2)
2) Spitfire (it's who put the first stone of the final of WW2)
3) Li-2 (you call them DC-3) (It's where we discussed who won WW2)
4) B-25 Mitchel (Salute! It's those who died to make it possible to discuss who win WW2)
5) Bf 109 (it's who made it possible to start this dispute in 1939)

I made a typo :o
4. A10 Warthog not A'20'

Gotta agree with Hornet33. Few others can approach the contributions of these five workhorses.
-
1. S.E.5a (Its a nice plane over 80 mph)
2. F2A Brewster Buffalo (It was the greatest screw-up in naval aviation orders.)
3. DC-3 (It is still alive.)
4. B-52 (Bomber, still alive)
5. F-86 Sabre (A jet from when flying was done with sticks, not joysticks)
-
2. F2A Brewster Buffalo (It was the greatest screw-up in naval aviation orders.)
Hey now, Brewster was a great plane against the soviets and holds a record :furious

I like these picks myself. a-10 is planned to be active 20 more years . Same with th B-52 but thats the #1 bomber. IMO :aok
-
I've always been kinda partial to the B-58 and B-47.
But have to admit the SR-71 was some kinda dream machine!
Though the 58 and 47 were short lived--they were ahead of their time and their development lead to some amazing planes.

My list of WWII American aircraft (so I'm not saying it's my be-all, end-all of greatest planes period):
1. F4U-4 - Best American fighter of the war, if not the best all-around Allied fighter period. Sorry Pony fans.
2. C-47 - Workhorse transport and cargo plane. Couldn't have won the war without it.
3. SBD Dauntless - Sunk more enemy tonnage in the Pacific than any other aircraft, and was second only to the submarine in total tonnage sunk.
4. F4F Wildcat - She may have been out-performed by the P-38, F4U and F6F, and out-classed by her chief adversaries, but it was the Wildcat that saw the Americans through Coral Sea and Midway. Japan had enough experienced pilots after Midway to recover in aircrews, if not warships, but they could never recover from the losses suffered at Guadalcanal. And it was the Wildcat that drove that nail into the coffin.
5. B-24 Liberator - The B-17 may be more famous, but the Liberator was the workhorse of the bomber fleets.
-
I think that Concorde and the SR-71 should be on any list, also the Bleriot Monoplane was probably more important than any other type in the development of early aviation in my opinion. C-47 deserves a place, as does the Spitfire for being the symbol of the free world against Nazism, so i guess that is my 5.
-
How much alike we are. I had Bleriot/curtiss, Spit/109, C47, 747 and if I recall right..the Concord.
(taken with a grain of salt on the last day of the year :D)
-
1. P-51d
2. P-51h
3. P-51b
4. F-82
5. A-36
:)
-
I think the Harrier deserves being mentioned.
-
For Fighters (no order):
bf109 Series (most kills in WWII)
F4 Phantom II (My Dad flew 'em and they are still active today, 1956-2009 is a long time for a fighter)
F15 (over thirty years of operations and not a single combat loss air to air)
MIG-21 (Deadly nimble little fighter)
Sopwith Camel
Attack (again no order)
A-10 (most beautiful aircraft ever made)
A-1 (Sandy saved a lot of pilots and served in two wars)
F4U Corsairs (tough choice to put it as fighter or attact)
AC-47 (Puff, need I say more?)
AC-130 (New and improved Puff)
Bombers
B-52
Tu-95 Bear
B-29 (Kept my Grand Father from having to go into Japan too)
B-25 (fly a bomber off a carrier, are you crazy?)
B-17
General Aviation
Write Flyer
DC3/C47
Ford Trimotor
Boeing 707
Concord

Opinions are like a....... uh never mind.
Frame the question differently and get different results. Which plane gave us the most bang for our buck?
-
Hey now, Brewster was a great plane against the soviets and holds a record :furious
I said: 2. F2A Brewster Buffalo (It was the greatest screw-up in naval aviation orders.)
, not anything about scores against the Soviets
-
I said: , not anything about scores against the Soviets
Without their screw up we would've missed it's greatness
-
DC3/C47. I don't know that any other bird has had such a worldwide impact and is still working after 70 years
QFT
-
I was thinking... does the space shuttle count? I wonder what kinda performance it would have firing off the rockets and flying in the atmosphere like a regular plane :devil
I should have mentioned the Sopwith Camel too in my original post.
-
Wright Flyer
Boeing 707
C-47 (in various guises)
Me 262
Mosquito (couldn't resist)
Basically, looking for "this changes everything" aircraft.
