5 greatest planes of all time?
« on: December 29, 2008, 02:37:53 AM »
What do you think is the top 5?

5. F4U
4. Spitfire
3. P-51
2. F4 Phantom
1. F-15 Eagle

Why did I pick the F-15 eagle to be the number 1? It's seen more than 20 years of service, and has a k/d ratio of air to air combat of like 150 to 0

F14 has to be one of them. Over 20 years of service, the USN's premier multi role fighter. Track 24 targets at a time, honestly of Dick Cheney wasn't a ..well...you know...it would be and SHOULD be in service today.

I thought about it myself. And I should have edited it to "fighters" as if it's planes, the B-52 should be up there at number 1 instead of the F-15.

1. Boeing B-52   This plane will see at least 80 years of service before it's gone completely. By FAR the best combat aircraft ever built.

2. Boeing 707   This plane led the way for comercial jet aviation, not to mention the various military versions that are still in service, AWACS, JSTARS, KC-135. This plane will also see at least 80 years of service if not more.

3. Boeing 747   The Grand Daddy of the super jumbos. Over 40 years in service and this airframe is STILL in production.

4. Douglas DC-3   Rock solid design that has withstood war and peace time missions. After over 70 years of flying, they are still out there doing what they were designed to do.

5. Lockheed SR-71   This plane set so many records it's not even funny. On it's last official flight it set a new world speed record. The technological achievments alone brought about by this plane earn it a place in the top 5 greatest.

1. SR-71 Blackbird : It's still the fastest <known> aircraft. lightyears ahead of its time
2. F-14 Tomcat : I think we are all well aware of its awesome capabilties even if its image was tarnished slightly by that midget cruise
3. P-51 Mustang : Took on every other enemy aircraft of the time and beat them all...again ahead of its time
4. F-15 Eagle : Designed to beat a soviet aircraft that eisted but wasn't the plane the U.S. thought it was (Mig 25 foxbat). Ahead of its time and has a exlempary combat record
5. A-10 Warthog : the grunts best freind. When your in the poop and in a tight spot nothing like calling in close in air support when nothing less than 30mm depleted uranium will do to completely devastate that pesky tank giving you the drizzily squirts.

They have a show on the military channel where they list the top 10's of different military hardware. I ussually dont agree with most of their assumptions especially regarding aircraft.

as a side note, I thought the space shuttle wasn't considered a aircraft but a sub-orbital glider. Doesnt meet the requirements for a aircraft
Crap now I gotta redo my cool sig.....crap!!! I cant remeber how to do it all !!!!!

B-52. All 5.
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

I think I got the rules right :

1- an american plane
2- another american plane
3- I'm thinking of an american plane
5- yet another american plane

and yes I don't know how to count.
