What do you guys think would make gameplay in the AvA better? One Idea I had was having no enemy icons, Would make things a bit more realistic, and would put your SA to the test.
Is it possible for the CMs to disable icons? I know Special Event CMs couldn't if I remember right.
-
Combat Tour please :D
-
It wouldn't make it more realistic since our monitors don't have as good a resolution as the human eye. Also I don't think staff can disable icons just set the distance on which they appear.
-
It would be cool to have the distance shortened to say 3k then
-
Currently they cant disable icons....however dont get me started about not having icons.
Not having them would be like flying legally blind....hardly realistic.
My vote.....fresh attitude and more people. That would be the best thing...

My suggestions:
- No icons would push a lot of people out, including me.
- Get rid of the fuel burn multiplier; its normal absence is one of the motivating reasons for me to fly in the AvA. At the very least go for 1.5x as a compromise.
- Disable bomber drones. One player, one aircraft or vehicle.
- Increase AAA to normal main arena levels. Current settings encourage vulching.
- Great emphasis on historical accuracy for planesets, i.e. less "gameplay" compromise, the imbalances are what make the AvA interesting.
-
Planesets are usually historic, this was just a furball setting. I agree with burn mult and ack settings though
-
- Increase AAA to normal main arena levels. Current settings encourage vulching.
Increasing AAA will only encourage ack running. If you want to stop any vulching make maned ack hardness a few hundred pounds.
-
I know, how about matched plane sets?? :D
-
Id be for limiting the number of plane types each week. Limit it to two or at the very most three different fighters at most per side and concentrate on some of the historic matchups. No dog piling RAF and USAAF or USN and USAAF at the same time.
-
Unfortunately powerful ack leads to ack hugging. It's really either or. Either you risk vulches or you risk ackhugging. I'd rather risk vulching, because that's nearly universally accepted as silly, and you can always up a warblwind and ruin their day.
Burn multiplier has never bothered me but I don't see any reason why we couldn't try a different setting, might make some interesting fights when you can't have the 'perfect' weight for every fight.
I don't agree with dropping bomber drones, we don't generally have enough people to mount an effective offensive without drones. It's painful as an axis player to encounter allied boxes but...I still say keep them.
My contribution:
I'd really like to see well formed squads flying together...but I don't think there's any way to do that other than try and coordinate some squad nights on the same night. Back during the war, we used to up a wing in formation, always loved that. Other squads did the same. Best fights I ever had, our wing encountering another and the ensuing furball.
Structured missions each week like Larry has been doing would be great. Including something we haven't done in a very long time, GV missions and objectives. Long ago we used to have GV only night, dunno about doing that again but some coordinated GV assaults/defenses would be a hoot. (of course with supporting air cover). Especially since we've got several new tank models since we used to do that so long ago.
Most importantly, everyone needs to have an open mind. There is no good and evil here, just people with different and equally important opinions.
-

I figure that if someone is able to run away from me into their AAA, I made a mistake in not killing him quickly enough, or I'm too close to his airbase. The first one is always my fault, the second is my fault when there's some distance between the bases. With the setups we've had recently where you could walk from one base to the other, tougher AAA would be problematic.

I love no icons. Flew without icons quite a bit in Warbirds. Love the fights, much more realistic and intense.
I did a test back in warbirds comparing real world visibility of aircraft compared to in game. I won't go into all the details but the end result was that the game failed in the level of detail in a mid range. At distances over a mile the game is faithful to real life for WWII size aircraft. Between about a mile and 300 yards the game did not measure up (mainly because of the field of view). Back inside 300 yards the game was pretty close to reality again.
I came to this determination using real world aircraft in flight over known distances. A 109 size aircraft is very hard to see and identify more than a mile away.
I also did a silhouette ID test. I created silhouettes of every aircraft in the game from top view screen shots and scaled them all the same.
I printed these and gave my wife 5 minutes to study them and then tested her ability to correctly identify them from various scale distances starting far away and moving in closer.
I then did the same test myself.
The result was that someone very familiar with the silhouettes was able to correctly identify them at twice the distance as someone who was not familiar.
My personal preference would be an icon system that eliminated the mid range failure without presenting a neon billboard 3 miles away.
But I doubt there will be any resources spent on such a project.
And I don't think there are very many folks willing to fly without the neon crutch.
The fights are more intense and confusing and real world tactics world correspondingly but it does make finding the fight more difficult and really is not appropriate for casual play.

yes they can, via reduced icon ranges. no, they shouldn't. nothing stops *you* from turning off icons. the whole icon/radar thing has been beaten to death. Limited settings = limited numbers. But most importantly, we all have unique computer setups and internet connex.

Historical plane sets period and ditch the "unwritten" abusive rules.

Have you ever flown in the AvA? If not then why come in here making "suggestions" when you dont even know what the hell goes on in there? Seems like you're just another krusty.

Saw Krusty in the AVA Sunday evening. He was doing great in the P-47D11.

I'm pretty sure (from another post) he is avoiding the AvA BECAUSE of the "unwritten" rules. The image of the AvA doesn't require a single sortie flown to gain knowledge of.
And when recruiting, image is everything. The reality is there are only a few on the Committee for the Enforcement of Imaginary Regulations but their vociferous nature makes the image much worse.

Because I would like to, but I'm not gonna let you or anyone else other than HT make up the rules so I don't and that comes through pretty loud and clear in these posts that if you fly A v A fly it my way.
-
I turn off icons now and again for a change - gives the other guy a better chance :)
the range used to be 3k on enemy planes, guess its back up to the default now

Wow, we can't have a thread in the AvA forum without it turning into a purse fight, huh?
The topic was suggestions for improving the AvA.

Apparently not, as Larry pointed out still trying to retain his grip on the kingdom

Combat Tour please :D
I second that! :aok :aok
Problem with no Icon is the game graphics are not good enough to distinguish Friend from Foe, Allied from Axis without being practically on top of the target.
Was a time way back before AHII, and I think in AHI where you could tell the model plane from a 4 color sprite, and that is way beyond the 10k or 6k normal icon range. If they re-introduced that, then yeah I'd be all for no icons. Otherwise just turn them off on your end and pray for the best.
:salute
-
Yeah I should have taken people's different computer situations into consideration. I know mine isn't that great, and I could just turn icons off...you're right. I forgot who mentioned it but I'd like to see some planesets where we have just two or three planes at a time aswell. May introduce new planes to people.
I don't think there's any doubt amoung us the AvA has the most potential out of all the arenas
-
The absolute best thing for the AvA, is if everyone would check their personalities/issues/vendettas as the door. I swear by the forums we sound like a bunch of old women with too much time on our hands.

You mind your elder's sonny, or I'll tell your pa when he gets home!

I would love a new icon system that neutralized the limitations of a computer while preserving the realism of no icons.
It could be done but I don't think it is a priority at all.
An old Warbirds player that was also a F15E backseater (-dobs-) came up with some excellent ideas for a new icon system that would have been really nice to see coded somewhere.

I agree, another suggestion had was get rid of kill messages alltogeather. That way people would be less inclined to seek out revenge on someone they don't like. I personally could care less who i shoot down/who shoots me down. I'm just there to have fun.

That they can do and have in the past. One other would be disable all non country chat and make it so you can only .s enemy. A great one, IMO, would be to make it so to post on this forum you would need at least one sortie in the AvA that month. It would stop all these guys that have an opinion on how the arena should be run when they have zero sorties in the arena for months.

I'd be all for that. The fight is much better when you don't get kill messages. Its a nice feature of special events.

I have always wondered about the validity of "You have been shot down by <name>". If your plane is shot down and/or pilot killed, why would you care who it was that killed you? I mean, after that, you'd be flying a cloud if you're lucky.
Why not just put a box in settings to auto <S> your kills and leave out who killed you? This would make it it near total anonymous and be a step in leaving the ego behind.
Maybe?

Kill messages is an arena setting. Why not turn them off?

I like my idea better :uhoh
-
Anyway.....
My suggestion list.
Planesets derived from specific WWII battles for 2 weeks at a time with appropriate map
Shorter icon distance. 1 mile enemy id is plenty.
No Kill messages
No ack at all. I hate all robots even if they can't shoot well. I don't worry about vultching because I up from far away to climb to 25K anyway.
I'm sure there is other stuff but I'll wait to post it another time
-
I like my idea better :uhoh
Its a good idea but years of dealing with arena settings and trying to get new code has taught me to go for the possible instead of the ideal.
-
so now you want us to play by your unwritten rules and regs. 25k or better, icons off that sort of thing??
ideally id like everyone to get along but possibly most of us could get along! :D

He didn't say that he expected everyone to fly at 25K. He said he would be at 25K. The title of this thread is AVA Suggestions, he's just giving his. Seems if you're intent on everyone getting along you'd try yourself.

i would love to get along with him. then again i dont know him. im sure if i met him in person, i probably would. i can get a better feel for a person in real life then what someone writes in a post on a bbs. most people in here have a tendancy to hide behind their computers. they say what they want because "they can" or because its "their US$14.95/C$16.03" and rightfully so.
However its not the real person. i dont think any of those posts are real. i think its a game of "im bigger, badder, and more powerful then you!" because of "A" personalities and because they're not face to face.
i think if we were all in the same room it would be, Hey Larry, or so you're the Infamous Jaeger! or hey shifty, great to meet you finally!! but we're not.
instead we make our opinions known. we say stuff thats mean or bad because no one is watching or will say to you "hey man be cool!" or something to that effect. then of course theres always the ever popular JG54 is this and JG54 is that!! so this is what we're left with.
back to the point, would i like to get along with him yes!! if hes on range, am i going to start on him? absolutely not! I only show respect to all that i meet or i squelch if i dont like them. I'm sure he's a nice guy and we would get along!
I've learned that if you dont like someone, dont respond to them. dont say things to make them mad. dont say things just to get a reaction. just be nice!!
This forum is so we can help make the AVA or the MA's or the FSO's a better place. so lets do that. lets make it a better place! we can start by keeping personal feelings out of it. Be cordial or even professional to each other. talk to other's like you would talk to your grandmother.
alot of the comments would not be made if grandma was sitting right there. so if you wont do it infront of her, dont do it.
thats my suggestion to the AVA. thanks for listening! :)

Larry I think the idea of no cross country chat is a good one too

Spot on Shifty.

Trust me , Dawger won't be at 25K very long. Why, just the other day I was able to entice him off the perch and a fun fight broke out ;)
(was a fun fight Dawger)
When most of the action is happening around 5K, the high guys will always come down, ya just gotta use the right bait.

I fail to see why the AvA should become a social labratory. Other than the planesets, I don't think anything should be different than in the other arenas we pay for.
meh, you guys want to increase numbers - stop limiting stuff other than planesets. historically the biggest issue "holding back" MAers from frequenting the AvA is....
wait for it.....
it's coming....
DAR settings and reduced icon ranges.

Yeah... Give it a week.
Well, maybe turn on the "Landed X kills" ...maybe? The gamers need some sort of reward and that'd still be anonymous with very little animosity toward the gamer landing. And the other gamers could offer <S> like in the olde daze.

I'm not saying add kill messages, just that I saw a pilot land kills and the message came across in CM Gold "Player X landed 4 kills in a BF-109F" or something on that order. I had no idea it could be set to show how many you landed and not show who you killed.
Unless some schmuck with CM powers typed it in as CM?
:noid
-
Kill notices-- are nice but it doesnt matter. makes it easier to salute people but it also keeps whines to a minimum. I can live with it either way.
i would suggest turning off the scoring. scoring is what causes people to get crazy (in my opinion). they want to get bigger better and faster planes. so my suggestion is to turn off scoring and take the perks off everything. its all free to try and play with. just my 2 cents.
-
I dunno, the Player has landed X kills is more vanity than anything else. I could take it or leave it.
I would like to see kill messages back. I fought a few fellows last night in furballs and there was no way to tell which aircraft was which, and one of them was a great fight. Well...that and I shot Larry down and I really really wanted to see "You shot Larry down" :) At least turn them back on the next setup so I can maybe one day see "You shot VWE down"....maybe.
Plus, I've begun to think no kill messages might lead to less to gooberness with anonymity.
-

I disagree. Settings should be the same as the other arenas. Leave special event stuff in special events. It's easy enough to check film to see who killed who, but requires a logout in order to do so.
Repeat after me (and it applies to more than just AH): One cannot legislate "morality."
Players are as players do. Case in point: I was enjoying the 1 V 1's last night for a while, people were leaving them alone. I killed the same guy several times. No words at all were exchanged. Then, while engaging in yet another 1 v 1, this guy felt compelled to get a cheap revenge kill and try to pick me, claiming he never fired, but conveniently ignoring the fact that I had 2 planes on me I had to respond to, allowing the 1st to get the kill he wasn't going to get otherwise.
I'll give you one guess which squad this guy belonged to. :noid
He never even manned up for his motivations in doing what he did after I called him on it (film knows all sees all) - and instead of his squaddies giving him a smack upside the head, they felt compelled to defend him because *I* was giving him a smack upside the head. Who it was didn't surprise me at all.
I said I'd post the films and screenies, and I may yet do so - just waiting for an appropriate moment to highlight the irony. :aok
aside to jaeg: If you don't want the pot stirred, don't light the fire. :aok

bzzzzttt...dweebish players just *think* they can get away being even more dweebish with a false sense of anonymity. Gotta love film. :aok

Shane was definately trying to stir things up yesterday evening. Wish we would have had a "mod" in the arena. (Feel the irony here) As for flying style he did just what he is complaining about. Im not posting any film. Already deleted it.
Its pety and childish. This is what ruins the AvA for me.

Ohh thanks - perfect place to inject a reality-shot. I'll definately post the films and screenies in chronolohgical order so you can see what went down.
Of course after what happened I returned the favor in spades. :aok
As for having a "mod" lol, I never said anything that was even close to being "modded" on.
I know you're a relatively newbie, so here's a free tip: if you see people saying thngs you don't want to see. type /.squelch <playername> works everytime.
When I return in a bit, I'll post that stuff so we can see what really went down. Til then, continue with your luftberry and hope some other squaddies come in to try and pick me *here,* too. :aok

luckily shane we have you to guide us in the right direction. you are always in the ava giving constructive criticism, helping those that need help and general father to all of us. how blessed are we to have you to keep us in line. our opinions matter not because thou hast much better outlook then we do.
in the last year, our group has been in the AVA on a regular basis. when i first started up with AH2 that's all we did. Never saw a Shane in the roster. over the summer we were limited but i was in there most every night even if it was for a short time. still never saw Shane in the roster. Now this fall Shane miraculously appears on the roster and all is good as long as its his way, his opinion and his all knowing guidance. How lucky are we to have him.
when you stir the pot shane, atleast have the courtesy to yell "fire in the hole". this way we know when to not say anything because your ideas are much better. your constructive critisism is much more constructive and we wont bother posting because you have all the answers that we cant possibly think about. so ill ask that rather then accusing people, you just learn to let it go. lead by example my friend, your arrogance doesn't become you.

My apologies too, sorry and ill now stop posting unless it has to do with making the AVA a better place.

Settings should be the same as the other arenas. Leave special event stuff in special events.
Thing is, AvA really is a special events arena. Always has been, even in its heyday. Brady et al. pushed for an arena that could have more realistic settings and more historical plane sets, and the result was AvA. I can't remember a time when people weren't fooling around with the settings.
- oldman (good to have you back, btw)
-
How about get some volunteers for missions? A couple of planned missions a week would be a hoot! Also would let everyone have a stab at getting things going.
-
any day but tuesday i would suggest, due to titanic tuesdays interference factor!
Maybe larry can come up AR234 mission or something. even a Ju88 or 87 run!
-
I would love to see the AvA move towards a special events style historical reenactment flavor. I'm not sure what tools HTC has developed in connection with CT that would help towards this goal but I imagine they have some pretty robust ones.
As an example of what I am talking about I'll tell you what I experimented with in the past.
Another game had a scripting language that allowed complete automation of all arena functions and introduced many other possibilities through mathematic manipulation. It also included a plane limit feature for each base. Basically, through scripting each base was assigned a specific number of each type of available aircraft. This made for some interesting possibilities for re-creation of specific events.
I used to hold something called "Weekend Warrior" events in which the event lasted for an entire 72 hour period. These events were mainly to test the system but they were quite fun for those involved. In between WW events the arena I used was an open AvA style arena with an historical planeset usually associated with the next WW event I was dreaming up.
I'll give some examples of events actually run.
Battle of Britain....September 1940.
I picked a specific weekend in September 1940 and wrote scripts that placed the historical amounts of the specific aircraft types at the historical bases they were located. The event started on Friday morning and ran in real time for 72 hours. I coincided arena time with real time in Britain. The map is in pretty high latitude so the night period was never all that dark and was pretty short. The Luftwaffe had their orders from history as did the RAF. Players were free to come and go as they pleased.
Aircraft destroyed were subtracted from the total available. Frontline fields lost aircraft more quickly of course but the system worked so that any player landing at a forward field made that aircraft available there. A log was run and after 72 hours the result of the battle was available from the log. Players enjoyed it. Of course, this is not something that one would want to do as a permanent setup but it was a fun weekend.
Historical numbers of aircraft and their losses actually meaning something made folks fly a little differently for those 72 hours.
Now for a persistant arena setup. We had a Phillipines map. I started the Allies with half and IJ with half. Each side had a primary port facility that supplied an entire logistics network. The logistics network was an AI controlled resupply system of truck convoys and naval shipping.
In order to close the enemy field to allow capture you had to cut the supply line and keep it cut until capture could be effected. I want get into details but it got the fight away from airfields and spread out across the map. What I was especially proud of was the fact that the farther back on the supply line you attacked the wider spread the harm was done to the enemy. Attacking the heavily escorted naval shipping and the primary port for each side had the potential to disrupt the other side's entire supply chain. It made for a more realistic battle with three layers.
Frontline assault on the FEBA, middle range interdiction of shipping and trucking and strategic bombing way back in the rear.
Those are just two examples of stuff done in the past with available tools. I fully expect to get derided here because I was derided there on a daily basis. There are always folks who don't want change in any form. And any event or arena designer always tries to include as many different types of activities enjoyed by players as possible within the scope of the concept. That just makes for good attendance.

I took last and this week off from the weekly missions because of the holidays. They will resume Wednesday, January 7th.

My apologies too, sorry and ill now stop posting unless it has to do with making the AVA a better place.

Oh, so you're gonna post telling certain of your skwaddies to get on board with the "man-code?" :aok
Anyway, I'll still post what I said I would, but in a separate thread.

I would love to see the AvA move towards a special events style historical reenactment flavor. I'm not sure what tools HTC has developed in connection with CT that would help towards this goal but I imagine they have some pretty robust ones.
We usually have weekly missions, my suggestion was just that more people should suggest missions. Usually the burden falls on one (Larry) or two people who consistently take the time and effort to pull it off. I think more people should get involved so it's not just one person who has the burden of coralling the masses.
Unfortunately, as far as I know, we really don't have any other tools than the basic map, base ownership, and airframes available to fly. There was talk of scripting coming eventually...but who knows.

I started this thread to make suggestions for the AvA not argue

Is there a way to block Shane from the thread, or just remove his noid self? The guy doesn't even fly in AvA except to be a nuisance. And he's a headache we don't need on the threads if we expect to get any numbers back.

So Shane's our new bad guy?

<insert name> Whoever is an annoyance is the bad guy. Shane is just the flavor of the year.

yes to both. :aok
As for Odee.. get some like minded people and go the vox populi route if you think it'll be successful. :aok Until then... I'm both a paying subscriber and registered forum user. You may not like what I say nor how bluntly and simply I say it, but I don't cross lines.

I figured as much, you were five steps ahead of me the entire engagement which didn't last that long.
Looks like I'm going to have some unplanned free time here in the near future.
I'd like to hook up with you in the DA sometime for some lessons and pointers.

you're welcome to. I'm often in the DA as well. Or if in the AvA, you can ask to go off to the side away from the ususal suspects.

Observation: Others should take note that Shane will often perform public service (such as the above-mentioned training) in partial penance for his salamanderly nature.

Not sure. Heard him say "take off ya hoser" the other day so I have my suspicions.

Do'h My mind does tend to wonder.
Speaking of Canadians, is there some Canadian snapshot we could try? I surely have never seen that. Don't think I've ever read anything about the Canadian air force's contributions to the war... *scurries away to his books*

This is page 6. :aok
I'd suggest you or anyone post any actual suggestions in their own individual threads. Keeps things a bit more tidy.

I apologize, you did use this as a rant thread though, and there's not a whole lot I can do to stop that. Maybe you could help us keep it tidy?

No, I used this thread to discuss the "suggestions" of no kill messages, and the "man-code." I took a more specific situation into a new thread, didn't I? :aok

It's what you get when you try to type (let's see if it works this way) p-r-i-c-k-l-y. There's some sort of computerized nun waiting to slap your hand with a ruler and change what you wrote.
