Is there any way to use one computer to access the files on another computer, say, over the internet? I know there is hacking, but I mean like how Tech Support can take remote control. The reason I ask is because I use two computers, half an island apart, and switch every week, and each time, I realize ive forgotten something on the other computer which I need on the one now, and I really dont want to drive all the way to the other house, start it up, put it on a flash drive, etc. So, can it be done?

Remote Desktop is a free Windows way.
There are also aftermarket ones such as PCAnywhere and Go To My PC. I prefer Remote Desktop. However in order to do this you will have to assign permissions through your internet router to allow this traffic. Google some tutorials on it - there are plenty.

TADAA:
www.logmein.com
I use the free version to help some people out who are computer illiterate.

Thanks. Ironically I found out about the application inside a multiplayer community of Flight Simulator 2004. They used it to gain co-pilots. Although I must say, stinky graphics for the co-pilot. :D
Another nice thing about the application, it seems port forwarding is not necessary in order for it to work. At least it was that way with the people I helped out.

Thanks a lot!
edit: logmein works GREAT but its a pay-per-month. Is remote desktop the only free one we know of?
edit:edit: I looked up remote desktop, and apparently you can only read files, you cannot move them from one PC to another.

Logmein is free for the basic package. That limits quite a few options, however it is still good on basic; Things such as Audio sharing are disabled.
I still have an account from about 2 years ago for it that works, so long as I re-download and add Computer.

I clicked the link that said free and it just put me on a trial... Ill check again though thank you!

In your account settings you can revert to the pro trial version. Afterward you either pay up or revert to free mode.

I probably have about 80 client computers hooked up via LogMeIn. Most are the free version, which, as you note, lacks built-in file transfer abilities. But that's not really a problem.
You can still use the free logmein accounts to run an FTP program on the remote computer to send the file to an FTP server somewhere, then you download it from the local computer. Or you could email yourself that desired file as an attachment. Or you could use RapidShare or some other online file downloading service to transfer the file.
Just because there are no built-in options doesn't mean there aren't any options.

Wish I would've noticed this sooner. TeamViewer (http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx) is a free remote support, file transfer, and presentation program with a load of features. I use it all the time. You can even have a customer (or buddy, whatever) download a tiny "quick support" version of the program that doesn't install onto their machine in order to connect with them. It makes it a lot easier for me to help my friends with their computers since you not only can share files and control their computer, but you can also show them a locked version of your desktop to demonstrate something.

Vote for this. I use it to help my 80yr father... I think we may buy a license for company use also.

if its just file transfer Ur after u could set up a ftp server on the machine (free ones out there). doing that u would have folder views and copy-paste then edit files on the PC u using.
some will say this is insecure but if u password the connection then change the port the ftp uses u would be fine.
ftp uses port 21(default) if u change it to something diffrent (65,000+ ports to choose from) u basically hide the ftp server from scanners.

Yes, you could use FTP, or you could use the encrypted connection of TeamViewer that will give you folder lists just like if you switched all of your computer's folder views to "List" in the right-click menu.
Indeed I did get a new girlfriend. Actually, I dated her a few months while Erika was off getting herself into trouble. Now that Erika's completely destroyed our relationship, I'm back with Jenny for as long as I can see. :)

Assuming you have both systems on line why not set up a VPN connection between them?
-
TeamViewer can manage a VPN for you as well. Although, I have no idea even what a VPN is, TeamViewer will do it.

Because I have no clue what a VPN is. I am completely clueless when it comes to computers.

When in search for answers, Google is your friend. Computer stuff isn't all to hard to learn. Just like any skill, takes the desire to seek out and learn it.

Problem with googling VPN is without knowing what a VPN is, I wouldn't have known to look it up :D

Serenity,
How soon do you need to do this? I have a very busy schedule for the next 2@3 weeks, but if you can wait that long then I can get with you to work thru setting something up... but right now I just do not have the time.... PM me if you want to set-something up...
PS: VPN stands for Virtual Private Network
