Is it just me, or does everyone seem to get more PW in P-38s?
I do not fly them anymore unless I am required to by a special event or squad mission. I stopped because it seemed like every time I upped, it ended with a PW. I rarely get them in the other rides I normally fly.
Last night in FSO, what do I get assigned? yep, P-38. I figure WTF, I'll give them another try. We get up and I keep my alt. We then tie up with a pile of Zeros and I maintain my speed and alt advantage, but as I make a run at one, of course he turns hard and I am forced to blast by to keep my speed up (and not get suckered into turning with them), someone gets a quick snapshot and what do I see spattered in my cockpit?....you guessed it.
I head for home but our field looks like a red hornets nest and I'm blacking out, so of course it's lights out.
*yawn*
So, Is it:
1. I just have bad luck in Lightnings.
2. The Lightning in this game has a bullet-magnet cockpit made of plastic.
3. (Insert comment like "you should just avoid the bullets" :D)
-
It depends on the night for me I guess. Some nights that's all I do is get pilot wounds. Other nights its rad hits. Good thing about the 38 is its got two of pretty much everything, except pilots.
But yeah, I guess I do seem to get pilot wounds more frequently than in other rides.
-
I recall one time when I was in the 475th.Two other guys and I were attacking some buffs in 38s.All three of us went away with pilot wounds. At times I felt I was almost guaranteed a pilot wound while attacking buffs in a 38.It always gave me the impression that it was more prone to pilot wounds than the other planes.

Fits in line with what I've been hearing in the MAs. So, was the P-38 that flimsy in the cockpit in RL, or is it a modeling thing?
Kinda sad because the plane is an otherwise great aircraft.

I GET EM FAIRLY OFTEN IN THE 38S.
i still keep lflyin em, as it's the only way i'm gonna get better in em.

How many mm's of armour ?
Survivability increases man times with increased armour.
-
The armor itself is pretty thick, capable of resisting most anything short of armor piercing 50 BMG or cannon rounds on its own.
Note that the sides are without armor. However, you'll almost never see a hole in the side, when you get wounded. Further, flak bursts are not directional, the shrapnel goes in all directions, yet the pilot is wounded, but no damage done to parts of the plane in other directions.
I've just grown to accept it. Sort of like driving a cab over truck, where you're always the first one to get to the wreck. I don't drive those trucks anymore. In real life you really die.
-
IMO layer of armor is a poor substitute for having a fuselage in back and a large engine block in front.
-
I've noticed this to be true in general of aircraft with twin engines: the pilot is exposed.
-
I've been getting them less and less strangely. I used to get them almost every other flight.
-

:rofl
-
I think it's just because you don't have an engine/prop infront of you to stop some bullets
-
Bong once rtb'd with 18 mg strikes on his seat armor after he had dropped in the middle of a tail chase as a decoy to allow the other P-38 (with one engine running) to escape.

30 or 50 cal?

:aok that's my guess

I was thinking the same thing, but didn't realize they were armored. Still, I would think and engine would do a better job of stopping a bullet than armor.
I agree with others that have said it seems like some days pilot wounds are more common than other days. Some days I get them all the time, others hardly any.
-

Well, I really doubt the Japanese had a lot of 50 BMG equipped planes.

agreed with the fuselage in back...but i'd have thought that the guns, cannon, and all the ammo belts would help deflect rounds from the front?

how can we tell where the rounds hit our a/c? besides the ctrl-d, or looking? i'm not trying to be wise.....just asking.....
-

The shooter was a Ki-43 on July 28, 1943. My guess would be that it was a variant with the twin type 97s (7.7mm). But I'm not familiar with Ki-43 deployment history.

We can't unless the shooter gives us their film to examine. The damage graphics are canned, and just give an approximate area of hits rather than shot for shot locations.
Let me rephrase that...Your own film will show hits, but you can't be sure that you can extrapolate the trajectory that the shooter really saw.
-
I get wounded sometimes. Doesn't seem like alot though.

Someone said that to me a while back and it made a lot of sense.
I too 'feel' I get more pilots wounds in the P38 than other rides, and like others have just come to accept it. :salute
Still my favorite ride. :)

:furious ok ITS 1-17-09 5:06 EASTERN TIME.I JUST FLEW TWO P-38 MISSIONS TO A ROOK BASE TO TAKE OUT THERE ORD.ON THE WAY THERE ON MY FIRST RUN I GOT JUMP BY A SPIT.WOULDNT YOU NO IT. BEFORE I COULD BREAK OFF RIGHT THROUGH THE BACK OF THE HEAD PW.BLOOD ALL OVER THE CANOPY,THEN ON MY SECOUND RUN I FLEW ON THE DECK TO TRY TO GET TO THE ROOK BASE TO TAKE OUT ORD.AND A GAIN THIS TIME A NIKKI. AS HE WAS FIRING ON ME I GOT TO DIVE AND GET SOME SPEED AND AS I STARTED TO TURN RIGHT TO TURN IT GOT ME PW BLOOD ON CANOPY FROM BEHIND SHOT.THATS NOT REAL...I SHOULD HAVE HAD THE SPEED FOR ONE.SECOUND THE ARMER BUILT INTO THE BACK OF THE P-38 SHOULD,NT HAVE TAKIN ME OUT THAT FAST.... GREAT PLANE BUT THE GAMES SPECKS ARE ALL WRONG.
-
i actually thought i read somewhere, that out to about 1,000 feet or so, a 50 cal would penetrate the armour on most aircraft back then?
i've also noticed in pictures, that the pilot does seem to sit higher in the P38 than other rides......

Roundeye, someone once told me "The reason for PW beign so common in the 38 is due to its armor around the cockpit. What does it have out front? Guns, not and engine. What does it have behind you? Some armour, not a whole fuselage."
-
Yep too Many P-38 PWs :furious. Friend got 7 in 7 sorties. I think the 38 is Cursed
-
I rarely ever get them in a P-38
-
Yeah, I thought it was just me!
I flew the 38 for a few sorties today. I'd say it was 4 out of 5 sorties where I had to land it with a pilot wound. I know it was my own stupidity to get shot up but it was just odd that they were mostly PWs. I mean, I went in and attacked a formation of Lancs from above - got my underbelly shot at(No more than a few scratches at this point) and as I pass through the box the only damage I took was to the pilot. Strange strange strange.
Although, I still like flying it -- I guess I'll have to bring some body armor next time. :aok
-
Don't get shot at. Problem solved. :aok
-
I seem to get pilot wounds in 38's more than other plans I fly. But there are planes that are worse as far as pilot wounds go...like planes with red circles on the wings!

That is what I'm seeing. It seems like I get an instant PW with very little damage elsewhere. Compared to my beloved F6F and F4F that gets shot all to pieces....I fly them home streaming oil, fuel, guns shot out, rudder shot off, 1/2 wing missing and no landing gear with 50 holes in the remaining parts and NO PW. You cannot convince me that the '38 was THAT much weaker in RL. I know Grumman made a helluva airplane back then, but Lockheed was no noob to the industry. The plane's record speaks for itself. It was not known as a deathtrap.
I'm not that concerned about the lack of an engine in front to protect me, because that only comes into play during a HO situation, which will get you shot in the FACE no matter what you fly. It's the rear and deflection shots. In which case the 38 seems to have comparable armor like the other acft have. Having a tail section behind the cockpit is only a layer of aluminum....not much for stopping bullets (look at the number of casualties inside bombers).....its the armor that matters. The 38 has comparable armor, so why all the PWs? I believe it's time to look at the damage model IMO.
The P-38 is a wonderful airplane that can an has served many roles. Not many planes can carry that much ordinance along with the capability to fight its way out of a mess. The extra engine has saved many souls as well. It's Achilles' heel in this game is it's fragile cockpit. I think it needs evaluating.

Double post :o
-
Well im not sure how you fly the 38 but you can't stick your nose at planes like others. Think about it your higher then the fuselage. Not much protection up there.
Also think that sould be a stat when flying the 38 :D

Roger that. I try not to stick my nose at planes no matter what I fly, unless I am at a severe disadvantage like being low/slow or if I'm in a Mossie or 110 against a superior fighter. In that case, If somone continues to fly toward me, then I take that as an acceptance to the HO. It usually does not turn out well for someone trying to HO a pile of cannons with wings. :D
I'm more concerned with the rear and deflection shots in a 38, which seems to have comparable armor in these places, yet recieve a higher number of PWs for some reason (in this game). :salute
-
Well I think for the same reason. With the engines on the wings and the spit tail. Most people shoot for the center of the plane, so that's why you would get more PW's in 38's. I seam to get more now from Puffy ack :furious
