Title: What's in a name
Post by: BigPlay on January 20, 2009, 04:35:25 PM
After playing this game for a couple of years now I always woundered what the meaning behind some of the players names were. Some are obvious like Whiskey. There are a ton of players with some refrence to the drink in their names. Some are not so obvious.

My name came from a construction site many years ago where my friend who worked along side of his father in law gave me this name . This guy was an oldtimer and had a nic name for everyone he met. One day he started calling me BigPlay and to this day when I see him he still calls me that. He has never used my real name since. The only reason I can think of why he started calling me that  was the job we were on was a tough job that needed a ton of on the spot decisions made and I was the one that had to make these decisions. I can remember everytime there was a question about anything he would come to me and say,
" ok..... what are we going to do now?" I think he was always waiting for a answer like "how the heck do I know". Even my wife  calls me BigPlay on occation.
Anyway just wanted to know what was behind some of your names.

My old callsign (Spikes) came from one of my favorite players who used to play with the Bills, Takeo Spikes. MstWntd, well. That just came out of the air. I figured MostWanted, but it was too long so I took out the vowels.

My first screen name was my first name and last initial BuddyR, my second one was Plus44, which was the name of my favorite band at the time. When it got locked in May of '07 because I lost the password, I made 1Plus44, and it went to 1pLUs44 for some reason, and that's how it is now.

Also Eskimo, 3rd A/D is no longer named that, X changed to "The Twilight Zone", unless someone else used the name and I missed another memo.  Keeping up with that geezer is hard.

well mine is linked to my best friends name.

together we are FLOTSOM&JETSOM.

it comes from 2 separate places. one is a metal band that both of us like. the second is from the expression " flotsam and jetsam" which is what they call the "wreckage that remains" on the water or washed up upon the shore, especially after a storm or other catastrophe has destroyed a ship or plane. if you knew how many a/c i fail to land on a runway then the name would make perfect sense to you.

we used the O's instead of the a's because we didnt want people calling us "sam" (although now they call us "som's" instead) as well as the O gives the name a strong more defined and bold sound than the a does. (face it it just sounds cooler  :D)

FLOTSOM

<S> for your achievement!

My BBS name comes from when I used to work in a metal shop a great number of years back..
I used to make carabiners, most of which were anodized  :)

My ingame name: Sloburn(couldn't get my old name back but going to call HTC about that)
is actually representative of a couple things...
1.  SloBurn is a band I listen to..  Think Black Sabbath meets Deep Purple with some anger thrown in for good measure..
2.  I'd like to think 38's burn pretty slow....  ?
3.  I roll my own

Mensa180..... 180 degrees is the opposite direction. Does that mean that you are the opposite of Mensa and possibly the least intelligent form of life?

Hahah, just kidding mate. TwentyFo has that title.  :rofl :lol

Myself.... Archaius is a derrivative of 'archaic' which just means 'old'. I've always felt older than I am. If I described my idea of a perfect week you'd be forgiven for thinking I am two decades older than I am. My mother goes out and socialises more than I do.

I am a bitter, reclusive bastid.  :aok

I have absolutely no real reason why I use the name Fugita, other than the fact that it's a completely opposite description of me. Actually I am going to change it when I return to the game in a couple of weeks. Here's an idea. Let's have a contest to give me a new name. :aok

I choose my name because I take my cartoon life in AH so seriously.

Well, originally my name was +Dizy back in Airwarrior when I flew with the ^Nomads^. AH wouldn't allow +Dizy, so I choose something else and finally settled on the name you see now.

The +Dizy name originated because of my fear of heights, I still get vertigo when I look up at skyscrapers. This doesn't occur when I've had 'rides', even aerobatics in a T6.

DMBEAR came form being in the Drunken Monkeys and my first name, Ted.  Also, my family called me Boogie Bear  :o

Around Nov/Dec I joined I/JG2 Richthofen and was asked to start up III/JG2.  I found a pilot in the Actual WWII squad names Hans "Assi" Hahn who was an ace on both fronts.  From what I read, he was a challenge to the Russians while he was a prisoner until 1955. :devil  I still haven't heard how he got the nickname, and I would like to know if anyone can advise.

"Assi" also makes people laugh for obvious reasons, and those interpretations fit me just as well.

So are you the Master Baiter in your squad? :P

I will do a bit of reserch and find out where the ASSI name derived from. I collect autographs and have a number of hahn autographs in my collection. I never really gave it much thought as to what Assi was.

I remember seeing this picture link (http://barryburton.deviantart.com/art/Megaman-ZX-Live-Metal-Enker-37782729) and thought it was cool, even though I didn't know who this Enker person was. After research I came across this (http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Enker) and thought the background was empty enough that I could make it my own. Then, Enker just became who I am. Still though, sometimes, the in-game pronunciations are either correct or sound like banana. :(

Post by: texasmom on January 23, 2009, 09:12:06 AM
I started out as texasmom, but changed it when it seemed like such a long thing to say if someone was talking to me.

So I switched it to TMom, which is much shorter to have to speak. :)

Then I decided I was DONE with AH, and quit FOR GOOD!!!!!

About two weeks later I started another account: txmom

Since the new name change policy, which allows you to switch every 30 days, I gave GhngsMom (GhengisMom) a run, but switched back after the 30 days, since I think nobody even got it, which defeated the whole purpose of having a completely mean name.

Next will be Momzilla (for probably only 30 days also).
After that maybe lazyeye (It sounds much meaner than any Mom-variation).

I would love to have "wrong-way-Christi," but sadly, it's too long. (no, my name isn't Christi... but there's a funny story behind it which I won't bore you with).

Way back when I first started playing Air Warrior, I was also a goaltender on the local ice hockey league.  In addition to playing full time on one team, I subbed for any other team that needed a goaltender. Not being a regular, they didn’t know my name and I was universally referred to just as, “Goalie”.

You could only have five letters in your Air Warrior ID, so it was shortened to “goaly”… Been that way ever since.

I picked my name "eagl" after I learned I would be flying the F-15E after pilot training.  Before then, my game id was "suck".

I've successfully dueled for the game ident twice, the last time with a guy who was using "eag1", which due to the in-game font looked identical to my id.  He was a great sport about it and changed his id after he lost.

Many years ago, a friend of mine went through TopGun at Mirimar.  I had just gotten my pilots license and thought it would be fun to spend a couple of days in the San Diego sunshine while he was in school.  After their training, his squad would meet for dinner and drinks and naturally I would tag along to listen to the days events... it was fascinating to say the least.  Of course all of them had callsigns and one asked me what mine was. I replied with the lame callsign I had at the time in AW (forgot what it was).  They said that in the Navy, your squad gives you your name.  Well, after a bit of discussion on their end I was given the name of 'Coach' because of my real name and the TV show (Hayden).  Interesting note.  My friend who I went to see then just became the CO of TopGun last August.  Many probably know that it has now moved to NV.

lololol

bear in mind, we are the civilain auxiliary top the Air Force. our equipment comes from them. our SAR calls are dispatched from the Air Force Rescue and Coordination Center.
we're also the best in the country for SAR. we also have the largest single engine aircraft fleet in the country, and we have the best safety record too.

personally, i don't care about rank. i only really care about getting my job done. i've got time in grade to make captain, but need to complete one 3 week class, and test to make it. there's 3 colonels that've been after me to do it. i figure it won't improve my ability to do my job any, so i keep sandbagging em..........

all i care about is making sure our cadets re furnished with what they need to learn, our pile-its are furnished with safe and reliable equipment, so they can perform their jobs with their normal excellence, and that our ground fleet is maintained in top condition.  :aok
