Is it him? News Of The World has a photo alledged to be Phelps hitting the bong? Something didnt look right about the photo to me and they are not the most respectable source...

I honestly doubt it. There's a 4 year ban for drugs in the olympics, and he wanted 2012 to keep his collection going. He wanted 14 I do believe. I don't think he'd make such a stupid mistake, much less let a photo be taken of it...

From a blurry photo, you can tell the cost of a watch? $5 Rolex's will look amazingly real from an out of focus blurry photo like that. My wife works in jewelry and she'd tell you the bling watches are highly appreciated by the under 30 crowd.
A plain white t-shirt and a multi-thousand dollar watch, highly unlikely. And notice the plastic blue cup in the lower part of the photo? Classic college party.
An A-list sports icon like him is going to NYC clubs and doing drugs (if he does), not some frat house.

Also, if you pay close attention to the size of the cup on the desk behind him and the size of the watch he is wearing and factor in the average distance he is from the desk and divide that by the exact location the watch is on his wrist(taking into consideration that the difference between a real Rolex and a fake is 1/10th of a millimeter), and then here's where your observation comes in, then you divide by the cross-sectional width of his earlobe multiplied by the length of his sideburn(based on the previous calculation to gauge the size of his watch) you'll see that the bong smoker is only 5'10", much too short to be Phelps. The photo is a fake. :aok

Doesn't change my opinion of him one way or another. He's still the only man ever to win 8. Weed shouldn't be illegal anyway, ties up all that prison space that could be used for more dangerous crimes, and the DEA would lose a few thousand jobs if it was made legal.

I jdont think so. He didnt lie about it but stepped up and admitted it and apologized. I and alot of others respect that.
Everybody makes mistakes. Atleast he owned up to it and I'm willing to give the guy a second chance and so is the majority of the public.
It's when celebs lie asnd deny their actions that the public turns their collective backs on em...ussually but, sometimes even then some celebs get multible chances.
Regardless he is still a great athlete. It's not like he was using performance enhancers. Just made a mistake, got cought up in all the glory of being a champion and doing something NOBODY has ever done.

Six-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps has been charged with driving under the influence.
A Maryland State Police trooper in Salisbury stopped the athlete last Thursday at 11:30 p.m., authorities said Monday.
"Last week, I made a mistake," Phelps said Monday night, as quoted by The Washington Post. "Getting in a car with anything to drink is wrong, dangerous and unacceptable. I'm 19 but was taught no matter how old you are, you should always take responsibility for your actions, which I will do."
He added: "I'm extremely sorry for this. ... That's all I can say right now."
The trooper pulled Phelps over after he failed to halt at a stop sign, the Baltimore Sun reports. (Phelps, who made a splash at the Athens Summer Games, is a Baltimore County resident) He was arrested and later charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, violation of a license restriction and failure to obey a traffic-control device.
Two other passengers were in the car with Phelps when he was stopped in his 2005 Land Rover.
Police say the swimmer was cooperative during the entire process, though The Post reports that police spokesman Maj. Greg Shipley, citing the force's confidentiality code, declined to say whether Phelps submitted to a blood alcohol test.
I have no problem with him smoking or drinking, responsibly. He wants to be marketed as a role model though. Fits right in with the Paris Hiltons I guess.

The public in general will probably forgive him, but I can't see many CEOs wanting to keep him on as a product spokesman... I bet he loses most or all of his sponsorship deals.
Serves him right... When people give you millions of dollars to represent their companies, you damn well better behave yourself. Idiot.
The only good thing about this is that the olympic folks probably won't ban him for using performance reducing drugs. He'll get a total rep for being a stoner and that will follow him for the rest of his swimming career, but I doubt he'll get banned from the sport. Losing the sponsors and product endorsement money will be more than enough punishment.
The really dumb thing is that this is his second brush with stupid teenager tricks. The first one was underage DUI, and he was pretty much forgiven for that one. I don't think he'll get a third chance... If I was spending marketing bucks, I wouldn't give any to him. I can just see the competition's ads...
Wear nike, not speedo. Our athletes aren't stoners (with big-ear silouhette of a head). Just do it.

Temporary suspension from swimming and one sponsor (Kellog) not renewing his contract... It's not much more than a slap on the wrist but I think he may see longer-term negative effects as well, in terms of people who pass up business or personal dealings with him on the basis of past unreliability. It's not that pot is all that bad, it's that a company just isn't going to pay a dopehead to represent them. One more incident that tarnishes his image and he just may be done. He's already on strike 2...

Pot made me paranoid... the first few times I smoked it. Liquor too the first few times i got really drunk with friends, but none of us were over 21 at the time. Tabacoo too when I was 16/17, that made me pretty paranoid too to smoke in public places, even with friends.
It's funny about those things, when you're afraid because you know you're doing something "wrong" or doing something irresponcible that you know should only be done responcibley (if at all), you get paranoid.

Its been silenced in the press here but the DEA and CIA have both been involved in the illegal shoot down of drug lords (and incidentally innocents including US citizens) in foreign countries for more then a decade now. If the court cases (there was a US citizen that survived one incident) ever go forward the agencies (DEA) powers may be severally curbed but I believe the effect will be stronger enforcement domestically.

It is very true. The CIA had a lot of people lying to investigators to cover up their mistakes. The Drug War is all about money, and not necessarily the money drug lords are making but more to do with federal agencies wanting to keep their ridiculous funding year after year when they have made little to no headway in their intended goals.

The Drug War is all about money, and not necessarily the money drug lords are making but more to do with federal agencies wanting to keep their ridiculous funding year after year when they have made little to no headway in their intended goals.
everyone should do their homework and realize why was made marijuana is illegal. There are many reasons why, none of which being for legitimate health reasons. One of the main reasons being that the dupont company wanted to maintain their almost monopoly status in the paper buissness, after they realized that hemp was a viable option to paper, and it had more uses that just making paper. (rope canvas etc.) They used lobbyist's and propaganda films like reefer madness to sway the publics opinion into thinking marijuana makes you commit murders and all sorts of crazy things.
History channel did a show on it and I was shocked to learn all the details, it really was a very shady and just insane deal. There is wayyy more to it than the brief little blurb i mentioned, i suggest everyone here who is so against it to do a little homework and see how the government and big buissness duped everyone for their own benefit.

If the War on Drugs ended, there would be a great many police officers, judges and lawyers who would all of a sudden be quite redundant. Considering just how political all three of those professions are, is it any real wonder that we keep on with this?
A few years back a group of kids in my town started using heroin and winding up in either the news,jail, or caskets. To combat this, my town hired a few new police officers and a canine. You're talking at least $100,000 in the police salaries and who knows how much for the canine, but likely at least several tens of thousands.
If we were really serious about putting a dent in the demand for drugs, that money could have sponsored a number of youth sports teams, sent some kids on field trips to various math and science museums, bought some instruments for some elementary schools, AND paid for decent rehab for the group of kids doing the dope.
Instead, we've got a few extra cops not stopping the problem, not making a dent, and just collecting a paycheck.
Why do we always go after supply? It clearly doesn't work.
