Title: Terrain Editor, Hawxs
Post by: Mojava on March 21, 2009, 08:27:21 AM
Take a look at this terrain editor for the new Tom Clancy flight sim.http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,679331/HAWX-versus-Google-Earth-Virtuality-check/News/ (http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,679331/HAWX-versus-Google-Earth-Virtuality-check/News/).  Is this something that AH2 could incorporate? I realize the gfx are a bit much, but it's a great idea for producing accurate maps with very little work.

That might be but i think it would require an entire recode correct?

For most of the earth's land areas, they don't cover at decent resolutions, ~1 inch to 4 miles for instance, it would look terrible at the typical altitudes in AH. See the western Pacific or Eastern Europe. Maybe in 5 or 10 years...

Edit:
For a jet game, at thirty thousand feet you wouldn't need ground detail. That's a big difference compared to AH where you fly below 10.

Where would they get aerial images that are relevant to WWII instead of the present?  SuperDomes and 12 lane freeways are gonna look a bit out of place in WWII Paris ;)  Also, think of how long it would take new terrains to download.

I don't think it's going to happen. It would be nice to have some more terrain tile functionality, though. For instance, allowing Terrain Editors to make our own specialized coastline without the need for special tiles.

For Tom Clancy, it wouldn't be WWII, and the textures would load in real time from their site as you traverse the terrain. Think about the ground clutter though, and bombable objects. Most government defense institutions won't be happy if their high value targets are displayed.  :)

check out BattleCraft for BattleFieldVietnam. Very detailed and easy to make maps.I've made a few for the BFV guys , takes me around a week to work one  up. If HTC had this similar program ; i could work a large map in about 2 weeks. We could use some new maps.
