This is for all you drumming fanatics...
Just out of curiosity. Who do you think the best drummer in the world is? Ive got two drummers who I believe are the best:
1st best drummer: Neil Peart "Der Trommler" from Rush
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF-k4wg70rg
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g200/rkobatistababe/Avenged%20Sevenfold/revsullivan.jpg)
2nd best drummer: Jimmy Sullivan "The Rev" from Avenged Sevenfold
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54W7QvProIk&feature=related
-
Keith Moon
-
Manu Katche :aok
-
John Bonham
-
Danny Carey is my all-time favorite.
Neil Peart is also a god.
Mike Portnoy isn't too bad either.
-
Bah!...Easy one
(http://www.stanford.edu/group/blocklab/Muppets/animal%20Drums.jpg)
-
RINGO!!
-
All "Great" choices, and hard to pick a "Best". But, my throw ins would be...
Terry Bozzio
(http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq288/Xtrepid/terrybozzio1a.jpg)
The Set
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hxe-SWxDEcw
The Old Days
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqkQmTs0Sek
Billy Cobham
(http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq288/Xtrepid/billy1.jpg)
Short Solo

Jazzy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGCBnzWnnL4
Plus I'm partial to Yamaha Percussion and Attack Heads...

sorry to piss in every ones corn flakes (except uptown)
John Henry Bonham, was, is, and will always be the greatest drummer to play music.
every one else is just pretending :rock
no seriously, I know that's just my opinion and there, most likely is technically better then Bonham, but I just love his style and sound.
I must say I don't know what his name is but if you have seen a movie called "drum line" the guy who does the drum work in that is crazy awesome.
-
Neil Peart. No comparison.
-
Billy Cobham
:aok
Art Blakey too
I helped set up Peter Gabriels Secret World tour and took a break every afternoon just so I could listen to Manu warming up, got to play his kit too for soundchecks, sounded quite good through a 50k turbosound rig :D
-
Portnoy is good, but like a machine, no soul. Bonzo had a fantastic heart and played with great abandon and feeling, but was not technically great by today's standards. Peart is technically fantastic while also maintaining a very human feel but is disqualified for being Canadian, therefore my pick is Buddy Rich.
-
Ya know this kinda thread makes it easy to spot who the drummers are. :aok
You guys have some great entries. How bout adding this bunch:
- Wells Kelly
- Bernard Purdie
- Steve Gadd
- Dave Garibaldi
- Omar Hakim
- Rod Morganstein
- Richie Hayward
- Jo Jo Mayer
There are so many. I kept it brief

Haha Frenchy... That video is priceless!!! :D
-
Bonham didn't come into his own until he settled down briefly around the time of "Physical Graffiti", because of Jason being almost 10 years old. He then worked on his technique, which was further showcased on "Presence" and "In through the out door." His best drum work was on "Achilles Last Stand." Don't get me wrong I like John a lot, I used to mention him alongside Keith Moon. But there is no comparison.
I drummed for 14 years and was self-taught. I know a "little" about drumming.
I'd put Portnoy up there before Bonham. Portnoy has always been been balls out, he's a "craftsman" behind the kit. This is the one drummer I have yet to see close up.
-
Ginger Baker (most of you prolly don't know who he is) You are to young :D And your opinions are narrowed by that fact.
Baker was always around it, never on it, but knew where it was.
Most of you are probably 30 and under. It is nice to know rock and roll from its' beginning. To have heard everyone.
Most of you are basing your decisions of what you've heard or like. Listen to the past like Xargos did in the post about Bass players.
If someone says Ringo Starr I'm gonna scream :D
If you want the best example of his work I think the song Crossroads was his best...along with White Room etc.
Anyone hear of Gene Krupa? Buddy Rich? those two gents could play also....and they didn't have the equipment they have today.
-

He (Portnoy) goes to the chiropractor where my wife works as a massage therapist once a week when not on tour, or in the studio. He gets an adjustment and a massage while he is there. I would say that is pretty close-up :) When I first saw him there, it was too funny that most of the people in the office had no clue who he was.
He probably could be considered the best as he's been on the cover of modern drummer and voted the best about 5 or six times, now), but I still gotta say Bonham.
His sound was HUGE, he innovated many many things and had a right foot like a jackhammer. He is certainly not the most technical, or learned, or polished but his style is so visceral, instinctive and complimentary to John Paul Jones and the rest of the band that one can't help but be floored by his playing. I have been listening to him since I was 4 years old, cruising around in the back of my step-dad's 69 GTO and there are still times that I hear certain parts of songs (that I've heard a billion times) where I have to just stop and say DAMN!!!
All of the players mentioned in this post are great. As a drummer, I love them all and I am always discovering new things, but I'll stick to my guns and say Bonham !!
:rock
-
Well IMO this a question without an answer, its more a matter of personal tastes and opinions. That being said I'm right and the rest of you are wrong :rofl
Buddy Rich is the greatest ever http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWrxHP36N1Q
Bonham is the greatest pure Rock N Roll drummer ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14GYov0EdyQ Great track of just the drums on Fool In the Rain
JoJo Mayer is the best of the new breed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr8KYnEW-7Y
-
Before I even opened this thread I was thinking, it better be Neil Peart. :aok
My second would be Travis Barker.
-
Gotta go with Peart. Thats a massive kit and none of it is for show.
-
From the mainstream drumming aspect a few of my faves are:
Simon Phillips: probably the greatest session drummer that has ever lived....
Nicko McBrain: Fastest right foot in rock-n-roll... Does things that guys even on a double-bass kit can't do.. No one else can do his signature gallop beat with one foot like him.. All on
a vintage Ludwig Speedking, no less! Although I think he's changed to DW as as peddles are concerned due to his age..
Steven Perkins: Takes tribal drumming, mixes in a little of the hard-hitting rock style, and just let's it go.... Probably the John Bonham of the 90's/2000's..
Stuart Copeland: just because he sweet rocks and I absolutely love his style...
From a technical aspect:
Guys like Dave Weckl and Mike Portnoy, but they don't seem to have soul like someone else said here....
If I want to hear their kind of drumming, I'll listen to my Roland V-Drum beat and fill-in presets...
One thing that a lot of people don't understand is that drumming and percussion is no mainly about
how flashy you get or how technically inclined you are.... It's about timing....
If a drummer doesn't have timing, he's not worth squat...
I'd much rather have a guy that can play a 4/4 beat than opposed to guy who's all over the place on the
kit but can't come in on the right note...
I will go so far to say as I'm glad no one mention Lars Ulrich as he is more likely one of the more horrible drummers in
recent years.... Barely any technical aptitude whatsoever... His timing is horrible... Rumors persist that he has constant troubles with timing
especially when on tour (which I've hear myself). Some guys just don't "get it" and keep flooding the music industry with straight-up bad drumming..
That sweetheart-drummer(the whole band are sweethearts) from creed/alterbridge comes to mind too..
But if I had to chose an all out favorite, it would have to be Buddy Rich..
-
Moon, Peart, Portnoy, Copeland, Bonham, Mitchell in that order.
Of course that is from a "kids" perspective so I could be wrong but I feel thats quite accurate.
-
As far as living drummers go I rate Brann Dailor (Mastodon), Will Scharf (Keelhaul), Des Kensel (High on Fire) and, oviously, Dave Lombardo (Slayer).
Best drummer ever though?
Bonham
full stop
the end
.....
-
Not necessarily the best, but my faves are:
Neil Peart
John Bohnam
Keith Moon
Carl Palmer
Stuart Copeland
Ralph Humphrey

Very very well put!!! I agree with you 100% of the way. Timing is of utmost importance. Its what gives the music a "heartbeat" or a pulse. Without the heartbeat, the music is crap. :rock
Gotta go with Peart. Thats a massive kit and none of it is for show.
Thank you so much!! :salute
-
#1 ever is Buddy Rich.
Neil Peart
John Bohnam
Keith Moon
Ginger Baker
Tommy Aldridge
Alex Van Halen
Vinnie Paul
Stewart Copelnd
Phil Collins
Nigel Olson
Tommy Lee
Buddy Miles

.....
Don't forget yourself, Brant, Rubin, and Alfredo!
I feel bad that I never even thought of those guys... Sorry for being stuck in the mainstream of things for a second...
Have you ever seen Keelhaul live? Will was an absolute monster.... Heh, how about his signature "bringing back the hi-hat in reach with his foot"
will still banging away... Bill rocks...
A big fan of Dave as well... <S>
-
Tommy Lee
Not on this planet. No way - no how. At least not as a complete musician.
He is a showman and it IS the entertainment business. I give him that. :salute

Bingo!!!!
This is exactly why I have a problem with the statement that Moonie was one of the greatest ever. I'm gonna piss some people off here but Moon was a great showman and an out of the box player but he was not a great drummer. Don't get me wrong I love Moon, IMO along with Krupa he is one of the most important drummers in history because of what he did to bring the drums out front. But as a time keeper, which is the drummers most important job he was lacking, Entwistle held that band together live.
-
Neil Peart and Buddy Rich are both at the top of the list. While I don't think Bonham was the greatest of all time, I think I liked his style the best. I'm not much of a Zepplin fan, but whenever I hear their music, the drums always stand out to me.
My personal Favorite however would be Derrick Plourde. I'm sure not many know who he was, but the guy was insanely good.
-
Just sayin.

Definately worth watching the whole thing.

and yes I sometimes fly to this. The Drums are awesome! :D
-
In no particular order:
John Bonham
Keith Moon
Mike Portnoy
Carter Beauford
Neil Peart
Morgan Rose
Danny Carey
Chad Smith
Eric Kretz
:rock
-
Outside of Peart, the best drummer I've personally seen would be Carl Palmer. He can give most a run for their money.
-
glad to see stuart copeland getting some mentions, really like his style (a bit like Manu I guess).
as for bonzo, you got to love him but really, theres more to it than beating the ***t out of a kit. your honours, may I present as my first piece of evidence: Since Ive Been Lovin You. you can imagine the engineers looking at each other, then at bonzo, and thinking "well i'm not going to be the one to tell him..." ;)
if simon philips was the guy who played for Micheal Schenker many years ago then :aok
I've got to give a special mention for the stereophonics drummer - hes pretty standard but Ive never seen a guy who plainly enjoys his job quite as much as he does :D
-
Aw, jeeze.... I forgot to add Danny Carey..... How stupid of me... :lol
I admire this guy because, like Stephen Perkins, his technique and style of playing is completely unorthodox, yet it works perfectly..
In drumming, making every note hear-able along with being dynamic is key.... Lots of rock and metal drummers are just hard hitters with no
finesse, no sense of style, and definitely no dynamics..
These guys make every note count.... I dig Mike Portnoy, but his technique and style of playing is very reminiscent of Neil Pert or even Dave Weckl..
But, I think he's probably one of the first guys in metal (prog metal specifically) that implemented this type of style and made it work....
Truthfully, however, that style isn't my thing although I can appreciate the skill and stamina taken to play like this for any length of time..

If you dig Stuart, you should check out Oyster Head.... Trey Anastasio, Les Claypool, Stuart Copeland
One of the more classy supa-groups I've experienced in a while.... While I don't necessarily like Phish, I like Trey's style of playing here much better....

thanks, will do :)

Check out Tim Yeung of "Divine Heresy" band. Hes the world's fastest base drum kicker.

Max Roach
John Maher of the Buzznoodles
Bill Bruford
Ian Paice
Cozy Powell
Roger Taylor
Matt Cameron

Chad Gracey

nine, nine, number nine....

Indeed, Avenged Sevenfold is one of my favorite bands as well! I like the way they blend mainstream rock with metal and punk. They call themselves "Metalcore" I believe...

Yeah I think so. I had the chance to see them in concert Saturday night at the Utica Aud. but I couldn't get the money for tickets.
-
Do you mean the squeaky kick pedal?
not at all, i like the squeeks and clunks and fretbuzz if its that kind of session, its just that arrangement is so much about dynamics and bonzo didnt really do subtle.
always liked jim capaldi too, had the opportunity to hear him and steve winwood jamming a little once, that was pretty special
-

Dude, Id be all over them tickets! Ive always wanted to see them in concert. Ive heard they are very very good live. Theyre coming to Columbus, Ohio for the Rock on the Range tour. Motley Crue will be the headliner band.

Buddy Rich for overall drumming.
For entertainment, and keeping me on my feet, Travis Barker.
I mean, damn dude, if you look at the way he moves his body when he drums, you're sometimes thinking "damn, how can you headbang, while playing the drums?? Ya know?"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKQgDY0pZ68
Even though I hate rap, I just can't understand how the hell he can bang his head and what not while he's playing and stay on beat.
Here he is at some drum off.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL0yEwyhYyY
I guess that's what makes him stand out? Idk

These are great threads, lots of opinions and theories. Impossible to quantify as it is such a personal choice, much like asking "what is the best color?". Although Dwight Schrute know's that color is black. My personal favorites would be.
1. Nicko McBrain-Iron Maiden. Unique style, looks like he is only hitting half the beats he is really hitting. Doesn't take himself too serious. Amazing drummer.
2. Neil Pert-Rush. He is Neil Pert from Rush.
3. Peter Criss-Kiss. Nothing amazing, but probably impossible to count the number of drummers he has inspired and influenced over the course of his career. Solid drummer.
4. Alex Van Halen-Van Halen. Amazing drummer with a style all his own.
5. Clive Burr- Iron Maiden (The early years). Because what up and coming drummer of the late 80's/early 90's didn't want to master the opening moments from "Run to the hills"? Also because I love Iron Maiden :D
-

We can go around in circles here. One person mentioned that Keith Moon's "timing stunk", this is laughable at best. He not only "kept time with Entwhistle", he added fills.
Goto to YouTube and watch "A Quick One while he is away" from "Rock and Roll Circus".

Mnay great drummers...these threads are almost pointless in that respect.
Just off he top o me head:

Neil Peart

Whoa timeout!! Did you say Lars from Metallica??? He has struggled way too much with timing. Hes a good drummer, as he manages to find a matching beat to the music, but really- have you seen any of his live performances? I think youd have a differing opinion afterwards...
-
i think hes really good.. neil and lars are probably the best double bass drummers which i think makes them stand out more
-
Neil doesn't use the double bass drum, the other is for show. I've yet to hear him use one since he joined Rush. Without Max Roach as a springboard, Neil never would have been where he is today. Even parts of his drum solo are nods to Max.
Lars is an ego-maniac (like the rest in that band) that is far from good, FAR.
-
All you Moon fanboys calm down :rofl I never said he had bad timing, I said he was not a great time keeper. What I meant was he was very loose with his playing. When he would play alot of those big fills his tempo would start jumping all over the place and Entwistle would pull him back. Not a big deal, a lot of drummers do it including myself. My point was the great ones dont have that problem.
Ohh and Lars Sucks

Masherbrum, on the beginning of the thread, click on the youtube link that which I provided. Neil Peart uses a LOT of double bass throughout the second half of his performance.

Yes. He wouldn't make the Top 40 on a list by anyone who has gone behind a kit.

Lars is boring as hell..
There are some WAY better double bass players out there
-
Thomas Pridgen from The Mars Volta. The dude is just sick :rock http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjrSihEI5CI
Not sure of band member's names here, but a few from The Mars Volta were in At the Drive-Inn as well..
Both are great bands! :rock

Man, I just don't see the fascination with double bass period. In my opinion, it doesn't do much for the music.. Granted, there is some stuff out there that
really just wouldn't sound right without.....Slayer or even tOOL for instance....But I think in a majority of cases, it's been over used...
It's just my opinion, but I'm not entirely a fan of double base.. Sure, there are loads of things you can do, but I've always been a single kick hi-hat type of guy..
Most guys who use double bass(with the except of guys like Dave Lombardo and Danny Carey) always got there damn feet on the bass peddles and almost
NEVER touch the hi-hat.. Or what I find amusing are guys like Nick Mason for Pink Floyd who has two bass drums just for show.. Listen to his live performances
or even studio recordings and you will never hear any double bass technique at all... For that matter, listen to Pulse and you'll see he uses practically the
same fill in every song... Has great timing though and that's what is key for that type of music..
Everyone knows Nicko McBrain plays with one peddle.. I've heard people say he used a double kick peddle on songs like The Wicker Man, The Ghost of the Navigator the live
version he plays of The Phantom of the opera.. He does stuff with one peddle that a lot of guys can't even do with 2 peddles... Double Bass...... Meh...
j/k :)

He is one of the hardest hitting drummers I have ever heard on record. He bests Stewart Copeland in that aspect and he is known for breaking snare heads in Concert. But Uriel, is a saddened loss.
Haj, you and I should've tried to work out a way to go to that concert last. 7 rows from them. :(
-
Karaya you were right.....we won't see them anymore. Very few left. And now no drummer.
A legend is slowly passing away that many have heard but do not recognize.
Many view them as just MoTown but they were Jazz Musicians first and always.
When they started at MoTown they considered it moonlighting.

Danny Carey

Add Art Blakely to the list.
-
Louis Bellson also. He actually just died a couple of weeks ago.

I was hoping to go through all the pages without seeing Lars Urich mentioned but I was dissapointed lol.
Lars is a decent drummer, I give him that much. However, throughout the years, I have lost ALOT of respect for not only him, but the whole band all together. Lars is decent but he is NOT the best drummer ever.

i honestly dont like anything past the black album they (metallica) has done .. it was decent.. but since that album they have gone downhill IMHO. but his older stuff i thought was really good.. ride the lightning is like one of the best selling albums of all time ranked #37 in 2008 (released in 84) and x5 platinum

The only CD of Metallica's that I can listen to anymore is Kill Em All and it is their best. The rest are played out and worn out.
-
Rick Allen...well just because of what he went through.
-
Buddy Rich ... the godfather of drums ... he made it "popular" to be a drummer. Many who have posted here are probably too young to have seen the Master play.
-
This is just getting silly now.

Thomas Pridgen- The man, if wanna call him that, is an unstoppable machine with the bass pedal and ghost notes.
Neil Peart
Terry Bozzio (spelling?)-who the hell has ever heard of a dichromatic kit?
