This is exactly why I have a problem with the statement that Moonie was one of the greatest ever. I'm gonna piss some people off here but Moon was a great showman and an out of the box player but he was not a great drummer. Don't get me wrong I love Moon, IMO along with Krupa he is one of the most important drummers in history because of what he did to bring the drums out front. But as a time keeper, which is the drummers most important job he was lacking, Entwistle held that band together live.

Neil Peart and Buddy Rich are both at the top of the list. While I don't think Bonham was the greatest of all time, I think I liked his style the best. I'm not much of a Zepplin fan, but whenever I hear their music, the drums always stand out to me.

 My personal Favorite however would be Derrick Plourde. I'm sure not many know who he was, but the guy was insanely good.

Outside of Peart, the best drummer I've personally seen would be Carl Palmer.   He can give most a run for their money.

glad to see stuart copeland getting some mentions, really like his style (a bit like Manu I guess).

as for bonzo, you got to love him but really, theres more to it than beating the ***t out of a kit. your honours, may I present as my first piece of evidence: Since Ive Been Lovin You. you can imagine the engineers looking at each other, then at bonzo, and thinking "well i'm not going to be the one to tell him..." ;)

if simon philips was the guy who played for Micheal Schenker many years ago then :aok

I've got to give a special mention for the stereophonics drummer - hes pretty standard but Ive never seen a guy who plainly enjoys his job quite as much as he does :D

Aw, jeeze....  I forgot to add Danny Carey.....  How stupid of me... :lol

I admire this guy because, like Stephen Perkins, his technique and style of playing is completely unorthodox, yet it works perfectly..
In drumming, making every note hear-able along with being dynamic is key....  Lots of rock and metal drummers are just hard hitters with no
finesse, no sense of style, and definitely no dynamics..  

These guys make every note count....  I dig Mike Portnoy, but his technique and style of playing is very reminiscent of Neil Pert or even Dave Weckl..
But, I think he's probably one of the first guys in metal (prog metal specifically) that implemented this type of style and made it work....
Truthfully, however, that style isn't my thing although I can appreciate the skill and stamina taken to play like this for any length of time..

If you dig Stuart, you should check out Oyster Head....  Trey Anastasio, Les Claypool, Stuart Copeland
One of the more classy supa-groups I've experienced in a while....  While I don't necessarily like Phish, I like Trey's style of playing here much better....
